Jodie Foster to Star in ‘True Detective’ Season 4 for HBO

The Oscar-winning actress makes her long-awaited return to television in a series regular role.

Season four of True Detective, dubbed Night Country, remains in the development stages though Foster’s casting certainly makes a formal series green light all but a given. Here’s how HBO describes True Detective: Night Country: “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.” Foster will play Liz Danvers. Additional details about the character were not immediately available.

Issa Lopez (Tigers Are Not Afraid, Secondary Effects) and Alan Page Arriaga (Shining Girls, Fear the Walking Dead) are set to co-write the scripts. Lopez is attached to direct the potential pilot.

for God's sake keep Matthew McConaughey out of it

by Anonymousreply 1May 26, 2022 10:10 PM

If only they'd called her Clarice,

by Anonymousreply 2May 26, 2022 10:11 PM

It’s set in Alaska? Too bad

by Anonymousreply 3May 26, 2022 10:13 PM

Wouldn't "Dyke Country" have been a better name?

by Anonymousreply 4May 26, 2022 10:27 PM

wow, very cool, I'm a fan of hers. I will definitely watch it!

by Anonymousreply 5May 26, 2022 10:29 PM
To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves

By scissoring it out of each other.

by Anonymousreply 6May 26, 2022 10:33 PM

It sounds like a dyke fest.

by Anonymousreply 7May 26, 2022 10:45 PM

WTF did she do to her face? It looks sharp as a knife.

by Anonymousreply 8May 26, 2022 10:58 PM

I wish Jonathan Demme were still alive. I bet he would've directed a number of the episodes.

by Anonymousreply 9May 28, 2022 2:00 AM

I carried darkness in myself too, but then I added fiber to my diet.

by Anonymousreply 10May 28, 2022 6:26 AM

I hope there’s a monster in it!!!

by Anonymousreply 11May 28, 2022 6:27 AM

Will she have a girlfriend in it?

by Anonymousreply 12May 29, 2022 3:11 AM

Sounds faggy with old chicks.

by Anonymousreply 13May 29, 2022 3:15 AM

Sofia Vergara would be a good steamy True Detective love interest for Jodie.

by Anonymousreply 14May 29, 2022 3:28 AM

She's always been talented and taken chances with her choices. A real artist when so many just phone it in. I'll be watching.

by Anonymousreply 15July 26, 2022 7:05 PM

She always phones it in. So wooden and inexpressive.

by Anonymousreply 16July 26, 2022 7:10 PM

I, of course, will be watching.

by Anonymousreply 17July 26, 2022 7:10 PM

The older Jodie gets the more she looks like Diana Muldaur

by Anonymousreply 18July 26, 2022 8:42 PM

I'm low-key excited for this. When is it supposed to air? This could be her "Mare of Easttown".

by Anonymousreply 19July 26, 2022 8:45 PM

Love Diana Muldaur R18. In youth a stunning beauty. Foster and Muldaur both project a quiet strength.

Does she need money? Why would she do TV?

by Anonymousreply 21July 26, 2022 8:57 PM
Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro

We know Foster will be Liz, so let's cast Evangeline!

I vote Rosario Dawson.

by Anonymousreply 22July 26, 2022 8:57 PM

Amy Aquino wouldn't be a bad choice either.

by Anonymousreply 23July 26, 2022 9:01 PM

R21 Some of the best roles are on TV. It's "prestige television". It started with The Spranos, and continued with Mad Men, Game of Thrones, etc. Lots of actors want to be able to really dig into a character that has more time to develop over the length of a series, as opposed to a single film. The best limited series are really lavish and well produced.

by Anonymousreply 24July 26, 2022 9:04 PM

I betcha it's gonna be Clarice Starling meets Rust Cohle!

by Anonymousreply 25July 26, 2022 9:08 PM

Filming just wrapped, here's the teaser.

No release date yet.

Looks leztastic!

(no, really, it does. There's a relationship implied in the trailer)

by Anonymousreply 27April 12, 2023 7:32 PM

Fiona Shaw is in this too. So yeah, a lesbian dream.

by Anonymousreply 28April 12, 2023 7:46 PM

Hell Yeah this looks good

by Anonymousreply 29April 12, 2023 7:51 PM

You have very shapely feet, Clarice.

by Anonymousreply 30April 12, 2023 7:52 PM

I don't know... twenty hours of Jodie as Kenny from Southpark?

by Anonymousreply 31April 12, 2023 8:12 PM
This could be her "Mare of Easttown".

Oh god I hope not. It was an interesting watch, but Jesus Christ did it ever take itself seriously. It was virtually Nolan-esque or Mendes-ian in its self-reverence.

by Anonymousreply 32April 12, 2023 8:21 PM

She looks like Cate Blanchett in the pic at OP. Not a good look.

by Anonymousreply 33April 12, 2023 8:29 PM

Will she be playing a cold single mom who deeply cares about her child?

by Anonymousreply 34April 12, 2023 8:30 PM

She looks like a "Liz Danvers".

by Anonymousreply 35April 12, 2023 8:31 PM

"How scared do you have to be to run out in the ice without any shoes?"

by Anonymousreply 36April 12, 2023 8:33 PM

Foster seems so humorless. It's the very reason why people tend not to like lesbians. She demands to be taken seriously, always. We get it, you have two Oscars and went to Yale. Laugh a little. A career built off of tough chick thrillers has left no room for joy around her. Would it kill her to do a comedy every once in a while? Still, I think this is a smart move for her and the show which has struggled to reach the heights of S1.

by Anonymousreply 37April 12, 2023 9:34 PM

Intriguing! I'd definitely watch.

by Anonymousreply 38April 12, 2023 9:40 PM

Did anyone watch season 3? Season 2 was so awful I didn’t bother.

by Anonymousreply 39April 12, 2023 10:33 PM

Is Jodie and the Black cop chick getting it on in this series?

by Anonymousreply 40April 12, 2023 10:45 PM

I'm looking forward to it, she's very good.

by Anonymousreply 41April 12, 2023 11:54 PM
Foster seems so humorless. It's the very reason why people tend not to like lesbians.

Hmm. How 'bout if I write it like this?

George Santos is soooo swishy! It's the very reason why people tend not to like gay men.

Do you find that funny, R37? Because if you don't, you're a humorless gay man.

by Anonymousreply 42April 13, 2023 12:18 AM

Was Jodie ever "hot"?

by Anonymousreply 43April 13, 2023 12:26 AM

Agree her line delivery always seems wooden. The only bit I ever liked her in was in the restaurant scene in Taxi Driver where she's talking to DeNiro and eating a jelly sandwich or some similar gross shit. She was quite natural in that.

by Anonymousreply 44April 13, 2023 12:31 AM

Well, I did drool over her in the Brave One, R43.

by Anonymousreply 45April 13, 2023 12:33 AM

r39 I had the third season on in the background, it was barely watchable.

by Anonymousreply 46April 13, 2023 3:18 AM

True Detective: Datalounge Detective Agency

by Anonymousreply 47April 13, 2023 3:21 AM

The Gay One is a very gay movie. Zero chemistry with the male leads.

by Anonymousreply 48April 13, 2023 3:34 AM

True Dykedective.

by Anonymousreply 49April 13, 2023 3:41 AM
Was Jodie ever "hot"?

Yes.

by Anonymousreply 50April 13, 2023 3:45 AM

I love Jodie. Can’t wait to watch it. She’s one of the few child stars who didn’t end up a mess and went to college.

by Anonymousreply 51April 13, 2023 3:45 AM
Foster seems so humorless. It's the very reason why people tend not to like lesbians.

Really? She’s been hilarious on Colbert’s show. Her brother said all she did for awhile was watch Beavis and Butt-Head episodes. She seems to have a very good sense of humor.

by Anonymousreply 52April 13, 2023 3:46 AM

Ho many Hollywood women have Jodie fucked? I guess someone of her calibre bagged the high femme chicks

by Anonymousreply 53April 13, 2023 6:46 AM

Looks like Ms Foster will finally get her Emmy. Looks good and very lez

by Anonymousreply 54April 13, 2023 7:31 AM

Jodie is good in the right roles, she seemed to lose interest in acting for a while. She also plays Nettie Bening's partner in the upcoming swimming biopic "Nyad".

by Anonymousreply 55April 13, 2023 7:33 AM

^It's Bening's last Oscar shot. Wonder if the Academy would give give Jodie a 3rd Oscar in Supporting.

by Anonymousreply 56April 13, 2023 7:38 AM

I loved TD S2!

by Anonymousreply 57April 13, 2023 9:06 AM

Bening will win the Oscar for Nyad unless Lange beats her for Long Day's Journey Into Night.

by Anonymousreply 58April 13, 2023 9:13 AM

True Detective: Dark Lesbians.

by Anonymousreply 59April 13, 2023 9:16 AM

R58, isn’t Lange’s film a mess?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 60April 13, 2023 10:03 AM

I'm hoping for the best for "Nyad", the script was on one of those "best unproduced screenplays" at one point but this is the Directors first effort, let's hope they (both) did well.

I would also love Lange to be nominated again.

by Anonymousreply 61April 13, 2023 10:06 AM

I’m very skeptical after how stupid season 3 was

by Anonymousreply 62April 13, 2023 10:14 AM

Is Jodie still refusing to go on stage due to the Hinkley incident? She could have had a second wind on Broadway.

by Anonymousreply 63April 13, 2023 10:29 AM

R58 Bening may get continually snubbed for the win but no one gets better opportunities at great roles than she does - no not even Streep.

by Anonymousreply 64April 14, 2023 4:19 AM

This thread caused me to watch The Brave One again. Still drooling.

by Anonymousreply 65April 15, 2023 5:17 AM

I don;t mind at all if this is lesbionic, but I would hugely mind if this is woke bullshit, where they find they have to fight misogyny and xenophobia and fatphobia in Alaska. Has there been any indication yet if this is the case?

by Anonymousreply 66April 15, 2023 5:25 AM

Here is the trailer.

Jodie looks like she's had no work done, which surprises me.

Was posted at r26 already, you're a full week late to the Jodie bashing party.

by Anonymousreply 68April 20, 2023 5:57 AM

Is this still coming out in 2023?

by Anonymousreply 69August 10, 2023 12:21 AM

No, it's been changed to 2024.

by Anonymousreply 70August 10, 2023 12:25 AM

Still as wooden as ever, I bet.

by Anonymousreply 71August 10, 2023 12:29 AM
No, it's been changed to 2024.

God fucking damnit, I knew something was wrong. Who knows when the hell this thing is coming out now.

by Anonymousreply 72August 28, 2023 3:17 AM

Those cheek piercings totally distract me.

by Anonymousreply 73August 28, 2023 3:47 AM

I’ll watch

by Anonymousreply 74August 28, 2023 3:50 AM

My god it screams dyke!

by Anonymousreply 75August 28, 2023 4:05 AM

January 2024.

This fucking blows. The one show I was looking forward to watching and discussing here on DL in the autumn. At least we have The Gilded Age.

It’s funny that Jodie is one of the few actors that gay and straight audiences love.

by Anonymousreply 79December 4, 2023 7:40 PM

As long as they don’t give her a boyfriend.

by Anonymousreply 80December 4, 2023 7:53 PM

Which reminds me, I have to buy a plank of wood to make into a table.

by Anonymousreply 81December 5, 2023 5:37 PM

Premieres this Sunday!

by Anonymousreply 82January 11, 2024 12:40 PM

Jodie might finally win an Emmy. I'm surprised she hasn't done a TV show sooner. Something intelligent that plays to her strengths

by Anonymousreply 83January 11, 2024 1:20 PM

Wow -- her skin looks creepy. Apparently she's not going the fillers route.

I was just "up home" visiting family and I was truly shocked how bad my skin looked there compared to when I'm here in FL. That cold, dry air must be hell on your face.

by Anonymousreply 84January 11, 2024 3:04 PM

Hmm, not feeling it just yet after watching the premiere. Seems more Mare of Easttown meets Twin Peaks meets The Terror (season 2) than True Detective. One too many supernatural elements.

Also, I know Pizzolatto is a hack, but there's a polish to his dialogue that is nowhere to be found here, it's just one cliche after another. Some iffy acting, too. Nicely shot, though. Horrible soundtrack.

I'll persevere, for Jodie.

by Anonymousreply 85January 15, 2024 3:15 PM

R43 She was hot in "Carny." And some might say SOTL.

by Anonymousreply 86January 15, 2024 3:38 PM

I tried to watch the first season of True Detective but couldn't. Awful.

by Anonymousreply 87January 15, 2024 4:04 PM

R85, I agree with everything you said. The Twin Peaks shit is probably the worst of it. After the soundtrack. But I will persevere for awhile. However, if it goes all mystical I'll bail at some point.

by Anonymousreply 88January 15, 2024 4:15 PM

Only to add this is a show that always seems to get another chance, yet seldom lives up to it. It's good but is it gripping?

by Anonymousreply 89January 15, 2024 4:16 PM

What does “True Detective” even mean?

These stories are as far from true detective work as you can get.

by Anonymousreply 90January 15, 2024 4:28 PM
The title “True Detective” of the TV show has a couple of layers of meaning:
1. [bold]Historical Reference:[/bold] The title “True Detective” is taken from a pioneering pulp magazine called “True Detective”, which launched the true crime category in 1928. This magazine was known for its sensationalism and profiling of real-life crime.
2. [bold]Irony and Deconstruction:[/bold] The TV show, while disturbing, does not sensationalize its content. It is more concerned with philosophical truth and honesty. The show deconstructs both heroic character and what Joseph Conrad called “the fascination with abomination”.
3. [bold]Character Analysis:[/bold] The title could also refer to the differences between the main characters, Rust and Marty, suggesting that only one of them is the “true” detective. Rust is often truthful, even if others don’t like the truth, while Marty presents himself deceitfully to others.
So, the title “True Detective” is a complex interplay of historical reference, irony, and character analysis. It reflects the show’s exploration of truth, honesty, and the nature of detective work.

by Anonymousreply 91January 15, 2024 4:37 PM

I wanted to like this more than I did. I didn’t hate it but were it not for Jodie…I’d be out!

by Anonymousreply 92January 15, 2024 4:37 PM

It's intriguing, I'm in.

by Anonymousreply 93January 15, 2024 5:21 PM

The premiere had a lot of great cinematography and enough intriguing elements to keep me watching. But it was also a little dull and plodding. The music choices were obnoxious; shows blasting songs during scenes to underline a point is getting exhausting. Leaning more fully into the supernatural aspects could be a mistake.

by Anonymousreply 94January 15, 2024 6:04 PM

You know the music is bad when Reddit is bitching about the inclusion of Billie Eilish. Total vibe killer.

by Anonymousreply 95January 15, 2024 6:08 PM

I've never seen anyone's cheeks pierced before.

by Anonymousreply 96January 15, 2024 6:42 PM

Better than a tongue!
