Jodie Foster to Star in ‘True Detective’ Season 4 for HBO
The Oscar-winning actress makes her long-awaited return to television in a series regular role.
Season four of True Detective, dubbed Night Country, remains in the development stages though Foster’s casting certainly makes a formal series green light all but a given. Here’s how HBO describes True Detective: Night Country: “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.” Foster will play Liz Danvers. Additional details about the character were not immediately available.
Issa Lopez (Tigers Are Not Afraid, Secondary Effects) and Alan Page Arriaga (Shining Girls, Fear the Walking Dead) are set to co-write the scripts. Lopez is attached to direct the potential pilot.

R21 Some of the best roles are on TV. It's "prestige television". It started with The Spranos, and continued with Mad Men, Game of Thrones, etc. Lots of actors want to be able to really dig into a character that has more time to develop over the length of a series, as opposed to a single film. The best limited series are really lavish and well produced.

Foster seems so humorless. It's the very reason why people tend not to like lesbians. She demands to be taken seriously, always. We get it, you have two Oscars and went to Yale. Laugh a little. A career built off of tough chick thrillers has left no room for joy around her. Would it kill her to do a comedy every once in a while? Still, I think this is a smart move for her and the show which has struggled to reach the heights of S1.

I'm hoping for the best for "Nyad", the script was on one of those "best unproduced screenplays" at one point but this is the Directors first effort, let's hope they (both) did well.

Hmm, not feeling it just yet after watching the premiere. Seems more Mare of Easttown meets Twin Peaks meets The Terror (season 2) than True Detective. One too many supernatural elements.
Also, I know Pizzolatto is a hack, but there's a polish to his dialogue that is nowhere to be found here, it's just one cliche after another. Some iffy acting, too. Nicely shot, though. Horrible soundtrack.
I'll persevere, for Jodie.

[quote]The title “True Detective” of the TV show has a couple of layers of meaning:
[quote]1. [bold]Historical Reference:[/bold] The title “True Detective” is taken from a pioneering pulp magazine called “True Detective”, which launched the true crime category in 1928. This magazine was known for its sensationalism and profiling of real-life crime.
[quote]2. [bold]Irony and Deconstruction:[/bold] The TV show, while disturbing, does not sensationalize its content. It is more concerned with philosophical truth and honesty. The show deconstructs both heroic character and what Joseph Conrad called “the fascination with abomination”.
[quote]3. [bold]Character Analysis:[/bold] The title could also refer to the differences between the main characters, Rust and Marty, suggesting that only one of them is the “true” detective. Rust is often truthful, even if others don’t like the truth, while Marty presents himself deceitfully to others.
[quote]So, the title “True Detective” is a complex interplay of historical reference, irony, and character analysis. It reflects the show’s exploration of truth, honesty, and the nature of detective work.

The premiere had a lot of great cinematography and enough intriguing elements to keep me watching. But it was also a little dull and plodding. The music choices were obnoxious; shows blasting songs during scenes to underline a point is getting exhausting. Leaning more fully into the supernatural aspects could be a mistake.
