The fact that the director and especially the writer have double downed on the most misogynistic elements of the story with even more troubling mansplaining - particularly the little girl grooming - makes it even worse. Trying to convince viewers that it was the Wife as a younger female who was in fact the groomer and not the adult male who visited her more than 152 times. From age 6 to 18 when he finally has sex with her. And then acting like this is some profound and beautiful romance rather than a story that robs a child of her future choices in life.
