I like some of the Scary Movie films. There's an awful lot of dreck included, but Chris Elliott as the Butler had some laugh-out-loud moments.

Eww, I tried watching White Chicks recently and had to abort about 20 minutes in. I can watch stupid movies, but this one crossed that line into "I'm losing IQ points here" territory.
My favorite stupid movie that never fails to make me laugh is Date Movie (a movie that could never get made today).

R44 Ok Mr. Grumpity Grump, Why don't you take a deep breath and back away from the computer. With every fun thread there is always someone who wants to come on here to criticize others instead of just enjoying the thread for what it's worth. There are no wrong answers.
Guilty Pleasure covers a lot of territory since taste in movies is not something that is universal. Those movies may not be guilty pleasures for you but obviously are for others.
BTW I view "guilty pleasures" as things you probably shouldn't "enjoy" but for some reason, you do. What people should or should not enjoy is subjective as hell.

Playing For Time. Really. It's a terrible film. Badly cast. Vanessa Redgrave is so grandly pathetic and wise and extra-terrestrial. She does not transcend to make us believe that she is a famous French singer. Bitch can't sing, or even fake sing. She sounds like she has four stomachs, ruminating. So the Holocaust true story movie is over then and we can dig in and enjoy life at the CAMP! Shirley Knight comes in with the German Shepherds and everyone's instrument goes out of tune. Miss Jane Pittman Alexander is so flutey she TOOTS when she speaks. Melanie Mayron would have to give it away before war time - now she gets some chocolate. Good deal. Some character discovers she has lesbian tendencies at CAMP! She's a radical JEW. They all have really nice Elaine from Seinfeld dresses and decent bunk beds. I will watch it and I will cry. But not when I'm supposed to. I wish that Fianaloula Finagenese would have said to her young liberator: "Here's Looking at You, Kid."
Instead we get her near death La Marseillaise. Sounds a lot like her Madame Butterfly.
Don't you love the Holocaust?

The Brady Bunch Movie. The placement of the clean, wholesome Bradys in the grungy, dysfunctional, crude world of the 1990s just highlights the unhipness of the original TV series in a very humorous way. Having grown up on the reruns, the inside jokes and call-backs to memorable moments from the show always make me laugh, but in a "how the fuck did anyone ever think this banal shit was funny" ironic kind of way.

Camp pleasures
The Legend of Lylah Clare (1968) Dir: Robert Aldrich and starring Kim Novak as a woman being made into the likeness of film legend Lylah Clare who died on her wedding night. Shades of Vertigo, Sunset Boulevard and Fedora with a wonderfully bizarre final scene
The Big Cube (1969) Dir: Tito Davison with gowns by Tavilla and starring Lana Turner mixing LSD and sedatives. A combination Turner melodrama and an AIP exploitation film. Distributed by Warner Brothers

OP here. You guys can post want u want, not a Nazi. But a guilty pleasure movie is one in which got terrible reviews, inherently stoner comedies, or big blockbusters that were box office bombs. Despite the fact that this films are loathed for being low wit or box office poision you still find them lovable and highly rewatchable.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | May 24, 2022 6:59 AM |
Serial Mom actually got decent reviews and has come to be recognized as satirical camp classic. Nothing to feel guilty about. Its actually quite smart and funny. But still it can go here.

Cats, the 90s one filmed on Broadway. It's cheesy and campy, and it's fun to see the catlike movements/dances in the makeup and furry legwarmers. Some people like the new CGI one as a fun bad movie but I like the performance of the real dancers onstage.

Other guilty faves:
‘The Core’ for its sci-fi cheeze and surprisingly high calibre cast. Unobtainium, giant diamonds and hot pockets
‘Beyond the Valley of the Dolls’ for the dialogue in the party scene alone plus Incense and Peppermints.
‘Rat Race’ - prairie dogging, Barbie museum and above ground pools.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space (The title says it all and it has hot as hell John Allen Nelson, but sadly, fully clothed)
Fade to Black (Dennis Christopher as a psycho film fan)
Trilogy of Terror (Karen Black in a trifecta of camp TV movie realness.)
Supergirl (Faye Dunaway as the villain, well I never!)
Runaway ('80s sci-fi cheese with Tom Selleck, Kirstie Alley, Gene Simmons! and killer robot spiders. I love it all.)
The Crush (Alicia Silverstone as a lethal Lolita and Cary Elwes looking hot on film for the last time.)
Child's Play/Chucky franchise and TV show (I love that foul-mouthed little fucker.)
The Poltergeist sequels (admittedly, not great but you get to hear the name Carol Anne uttered/shouted ad nauseam.)
The Naked Gun movies (Leslie Nielsen was hilarious in them.)

Adam & Steve - I know it gets a lot of hate here, but I always enjoy - as a whole, or in bits and pieces.
Ultimately it's a sweet love story, but with goofy set pieces and silly performances - Parker Posey and Chris Kattan are hilarious. Even DL fave Sally Kirkland shows up. And any movie that includes "Something Good" set at Marie's Crisis in NYC is fine by me.
Also, Thoroughly Modern Millie - just so damn fun, Julie never looked better, and delightful music. A pure confection.

A barely-released B-movie called "Stacy's Knights" (aka "The Touch", aaka "Double Down"), about a group of card-counting casino hustlers. Notable only for an early appearance by Kevin Costner giving the least-stilted performance I've ever seen from him.
And the theme song is really good.
The entire movie is on YouTube.

Films like Clueless and Heathers make me feel good and laugh a lot, but they are good films, so I don't think of them as guilty pleasures.
Guilty pleasures for me are David Lynch's Dune, which is deliriously bad and eminently watchable, and Showgirls, which is the apotheosis of "so bad it's good."

I hate Joan Crawford. She's a hideous actress and creature. So that Straight Jacket film is a guilty pleasure. All of her most hideous characteristics are on display - yet we are to feel she is a faded beauty and a vulnerable character? It's a better part than she deserves - and the role is humiliating. Bitch.
Guilty Pleasure = must be high to watch.

Movies that have achieved cult status, like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and John Waters' films, shouldn't be considered guilty pleasure movies, unless you're a Mormon or something.

The big recent one for me is Southland Tales. I loved Donnie Darko in high school and was really excited for this. I hated it and barely got through it the first time. I rewatched it out of curiosity and kind of fell in love with it. It’s so bizarre and out there and expensive. The scenes of a woman demanding to suck The Rock’s dick in public, there’s a Justin Timberlake musical number out of nowhere. You can’t not appreciate a movie this ambitious.

A Dirty Shame. I saw it on my bday on opening night & loved it, even though half the audience was cringing.
My fundamentalist coworker (RIP) was a huge Tracey Ullman fan & IIRC took the day off to see a matinee with her hubby that same day.
Monday morning we had a spirited debate about the film, she was so upset that Tracey had lowered herself to be in it & actually believed she had stuck a water bottle up her vag. To this day I still laugh at remembering Selma Blair & her ginormous boobs dancing on the roof of that bar. Oh, and coworker’s hubby said Selma’s boobs were real & he’d seen her interviewed & they were NOT prosthetic.

R253 What is it with old actors turning to shit when they reach a certain age?
Think of Diane Keaton, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Mary Steenburgen, Robert De Niro, etc. These are all Oscar winners with the training and the clout to do anything they want. So why do they trade their genuine talent for a low paycheck in stinkers like "POMS" or "Book Club" or "Dirty Grandpa Breaks a Hip?" Is this really how they want their careers to end? Or do they just need coin that badly?
It's like Joan Crawford ending her legendary career in that low-budget caveman movie. It's a disgrace.

Mary Steenburgen and Helen Mirren seems a laidback types who might not have issues doing bad comedy movies. I really like this stupid movie, Virgin Witch, a British horror sexploitation film directed by Ray Austin and starring Ann and Vicki Michelle, Patricia Haines and Neil Hallett. The only movie where you really want to say, 'put it back on' it coulda been better with clothes on. BTW, if you do watch it the music is great, the song, 'To go your way'.
Vicki Michelle as Betty was in Allo Allo. Ann Michell as Christine, was the star who does not want to talk about this film, at all. Patricia Haines as Sybil Waite was Michael Caine's first wife who died not long after this film from cancer. She did once appear on the old show, The Avengers. Sad ending for her. Helen Downing as Abby Darke (she's black, oh brother, the name) but she sings that song I love, To go your way. Listen to it, you will not be disappointed.
The mansion it was filmed in, in England, was really old. Like 1700s or so.
The sister was on

R319 wins the thread. What an utter piece of shit that movie is, from every angle. The actors are phoning it in for a paycheck. The script is ludicrous. The laughs are cheap and few. Your friends will mock you if they see you watching this. And seeing so much comedic talent squander their days on a movie that has no fuckin' business being made? That's just a big wet kiss of "Guilty Pleasure Film."

I agree with R189.
Some folks really have a strange idea of what a 'guilty pleasure' is. I wonder if they are just young, or perhaps never gave this matter much thought. But yeah, a guilty pleasure has always meant a shit movie that you love watching because it's a shit movie. Not a movie that was a huge hit and a critical success (but might seem dated now).
My favorite is Vice Squad. If you get a chance to see this, you won't regret it. It is just completely terrible in every way. The script, the acting, the direction. It's wild and fucking stupid. This was on HBO back in 1982, and I watched it every time it came on, and can still quote much of the shitty dialogue. I rewatched it again recently and boy does it hold up as a very watchable terribly acted 'film' about prostitution. The decor is decidedly late 70s (a style that still lingered into the early 80s) and very joint-smoking worthy.
by Anonymous | reply 329 | August 7, 2022 6:43 PM |
Roller Boogie is another favorite. Linda Blair was riding high from The Exorcist, and her agent was clearly trying to make her the "It" girl, and not typecast her as a scream queen (horror roles). I think this vacuous attempt at 'romantic comedy' was such a critical failure it brought embarrassment to her career, and she went back full force into horror films immediately afterwards, making such camp classics as "Hell Night" and "Chained Heat" and "Savage Streets" afterwards...each of which are worthy of inclusion in this thread.
What makes this watchable is the very confusing lack of plot (something that happened in 70s films very often), coupled with beautifully dated costumes/decor and now classic disco soundtrack. It's corny and yet so lovely to watch how folks looked and roller skated back then.

GRAFFITI BRIDGE--a would-be sequel to PURPLE RAIN--is almost irredeemably awful. It makes UNDER THE CHERRY MOON look like Hitchcock.
But it may be the most ludicrous and enjoyable sojourn to Stupid City any artist or celebrity ever took. For me it's a remote dropper--if ever I see it playing on TV, I'm quitting early and cancelling my plans and grabbing a drink and watching the entire film. It's also one of those cult classics like ROCKY HORROR where all the lines are so quotable that you have to yell them at the screen in joy when they happen. Gloriously, loveably bad, like Prince himself in many ways.

^^damn the GRAFFITI BRIDGE clip I posted above isn’t even the one I wanted to post or the funniest one, though it’s plenty dumb and fun and wacky enough. This scene is better, the one where Kid i.e. Prince(ss) clippity clops in his chacha heels into Morris Day’s traphouse and tries to seduce him into giving him a battle of the bands, mostly by flicking his relaxed Rachel out of his Bambi eyes and looking sultry. Morris of course is having none of this whore behaviour and basically pulls rank to tell Kid that he’s a stupid little brokeass himbo and to get the Hell up out of his crib (in a speech that sounds like it should irl be coming from Prince to Morris...thinking thoughts). All during this speech The Time are making these Looney Tunes sound effects and it’s...oh fuck it just watch it, it’s art.
Another hilarious scene I love but can’t find atm is the one where Morris & his manservant Jerome have a money fight in Morris’s glitzy bar/office while one of Morris’s hos watches them in total bemusement
Writing this it just hit me that much of the good straight comedy that works in this and in PURPLE RAIN comes in the banal little throwaway moments, whereas the ‘drama’ is all camp funny. An example of the latter: Prince & the angel Aura (literal angel, from Jehovah Heaven presumably) he beguiles in GRAFFITI BRIDGE go on a cutesy date to what looks like a skatepark, then she randomly dies in a hit and run out of nowhere. The whole sequence is so fast and so batshit and so unnecessary.

"Under the Yum-Yum Tree", a typical early-60s hot and bothered "sex comedy" in which a young couple move in together as a "trial marriage" (of COURSE they've never had sex!). Sexual tension ensues. Throw in a lecherous Jack Lemmon for good measure. I don't know why I like this movie, but I do. Maybe because these were the types of movies that aired on TV all the time when I was growing up, and it's just a comfort to me.
The opening titles are kinda cute.

What, R423? Last Year at Marienbad is supposed to be a difficult to understand art film, not a guilty pleasure, though some critics hated it.
by Anonymous | reply 445 | October 20, 2022 8:02 AM |
^ "Marienbad" is really unclassifiable, unique. The atmosphere of it is intentionally stifling, the story is mysterious, unresolved, circular, again completely intentionally. As conceived by Robbe-Grillet, who wrote it, it's pure "cinema," nothing but images on a screen. It's hard to see how it could be a "guilty pleasure" because it's hardly pleasurable, but it IS certainly intriguing, and would be very vulnerable to camp ridicule (it's FRENCH, cheri...)
Take a look:
by Anonymous | reply 446 | October 21, 2022 6:33 PM |
A more appropriate "guilty pleasure" film, an analogous kind of movie, would be *EMMANUELLE* (1974), in which a young French woman sets out to "learn the true meaning of eroticism." I saw this movie in a theater when it was first released, along with 3 other guys, and we laughed so hard and so loudly at the whole thing that EVERY other person in the theater had gotten up and left in disgust by the time that we, too, gave up and left.
