What homoerotic photography image tinged your young gay brain if you came of age in the 80’s?
For me it was “Fred With Tires” by Herb Ritts. Surely I saw this in Details or The Face. I never forgot it.

There's an Australian photographer who does homoerotic pictures of men working, such as a junk car lot, horse stable, Blue collar settings, etc many are full frontal nudes, but I can't recall the photographer's name. Very sexy and beautiful working men, stunning images, maybe someone will know the name of the Australian photographer?... :-)

R11 They're just pictures of guys posing shirtless. I remember a lot of girls had that picture of the model in white jockey shorts on their walls. It wasn't considered homoerotic (why would it be)? I would think "homoerotic" would indicate some hint of homoerotic sex, like, you know, a couple of guys...

The pic at R4 wins for me. Madsen is one of the most homoerotic models ever - the sweet, feminine face, his expression of sleepy, stoned innocence, the sense of vulnerability of the pose (even the spread legs, usually an aggressive gesture, seems to be soft and inviting), his clearly visible penis, the silken tactility of everything.

R34 No, and I didn't look up the words "iconic" or "photo" because I also know what they mean. Okay, it's fine if any sexy photo of a muscular man can be called "homoerotic". I would just normally call that "erotic." Or just a semi-nude photo. Sorry if I offended everyone. *crawls back into hole*

R66 here’s the definition:

So all the pictures shown so far fit the definition. Maybe as a straight frau you shouldn’t be here at all, let alone berating us for what we found homoerotic in the 80s?

homoerotic:

Shut your slimy gash, frau cunt R66. You have no business telling gay men what homoeroticism is.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | May 21, 2022 11:35 PM |
Same sex as who? And there are multiple other definitions that say somethin g entirely different:
Merriam Webster: The meaning of HOMOEROTIC is of, relating to, or involving sexual activity between people of the same sex
Then you have one more similarly to the one posted from Collins dictionary: Homoerotic is used to describe things such as films, literature, and images intended to be sexually appealing to gay people.
I guess some might fall into that class, though I am not sure how you can tell it was directed at gay men. Unless they're presenting hole or something.

But what if the eroticized male body is appealing to a girl ? Then what ? It is still appealing to the gay man, yes, but " homoerotic" should allude to erotic representation between at least two males ( or female).
But that's for the sake of vocabulary debate !
I'm here for the pretty pics !
Now, does anybody remembers short publicity clip with a beautiful man working on a machine. It was about cotton clothes (?). I remember seeing that before trailers at the movies in the mid-eighties. Wasn't French or American ? I wouldn't know.
Anybody remembers ?
by Anonymous | reply 86 | May 22, 2022 2:09 AM |
For me the Jim Palmer ads are not homoerotic because Jim is presented as just a regular guy, albeit very attractive, who is photographed in his skivvies. The appeal is to straight women who respond to a man who is friendly, wholesome and in control of the situation.
The Soloflex ad is homoerotic because its subject is erotized in a feminine way - made to look passive, soft, inviting and innocent - in a way that I imagine most women would not respond to, even if they found Madsen objectively good-looking.
We see Palmer's personality; we see Madsen's physicality.
Or that's how it seems to me.

Every time I would go to the mall with my mother during the 80s, I would run off to Spencer Gifts and salivate over all the homoerotic merchandise. They had a poster section in the back of the store with several posters of half-naked guys. I especially remember one poster of the Unknown Comic who was naked and he had a smaller paper bag over his cock. I laugh now that it used to get me so turned on.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | May 22, 2022 3:10 AM |
Homoerotic most standardly refers to allusions to same sex attraction. A cute guy in a pic is not homoerotic unless he’s in, say, a locker room with men giving off hints of veiled intimacy in the background. Then the work becomes homoerotic… by the standard understanding of the word.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | May 22, 2022 3:19 AM |
There is one Jim Palmer ad that shows a little bit of his pubes. I thought his bush must have looked like the thick hair on his head.
The Unknown Comic posed full-frontal in Playgirl with a brown bag over his head. Allegedly it really was him.

Jim is a former professional baseball pitcher. Jim was asked to be a spokesman for Jockey underwear. He donated his Jockey poster earnings to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
"During the late 1970s, Palmer was a spokesman and underwear model for Jockey brand men's briefs. He appeared in the company's national print and television advertisements as well as on billboards at Times Square in New York City and other major cities. He donated all proceeds from the sale of his underwear poster to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation."

Yes, and I would agree that those types of ads are more accurately described as homoerotic, in my opinion. I'm just saying, that's not the definition I found. But also, arguably, a photo of a bunch of naked or near-naked men together IN A NON-SEXUAL SITUATION, like the one at R109, is no more homoerotic than a photo of one beautiful man displaying his body for the camera.

There are many non-sexual situations in ads that have always been deemed homoerotic, that's why they come up when you Google them. The Outsiders (film) was considered homoerotic and many people have pointed that out, even though the situations are non-sexual. For one example.

That's not what I meant, R136. To repeat -- a photo of two or more naked or near-naked men together in a non-sexual situation is arguably no more HOMOerotic than a photo of one man displaying his body, because both types of photos would presumably appeal to straight women as much as to gay men, whereas as a photo of two or more near-naked men caressing or kissing or groping or screwing each other could obviously be termed homoerotic with no fear of disagreement.

Quite frankly one of the most homoerotic things for me was seeing that shower door pop open revealing a slick, wet, treasured trailed naked Gregory Harrison each week in the Trapper John MD opening credits at .31.

R149 Yes, they certainly improved on their surrogate Hawkeye Pierce.

More a publicity still, but I think this pic of the cast of Weird Science did it for this gayling.

Were at reply152 and you guys are arguing about what is considered homoerotic? Well, this poster is my definition:

r125 my apologies, I am not trying to be a dick for pointing this out, but that is not Tom Cruise at r70.

The picture most dreaded by Professor Ilan Mitchell-Smith.

Will those of you who wish to play Argue please take your conversations down the hall? You are distracting the rest of us from the task at hand. Thanks!

WHET Scott Madsen? Any now pics of him. I crushed on him hard
by Anonymous | reply 157 | May 23, 2022 1:48 PM |
^He was an embezzler, tried and convicted. Went to prison for it. Died "unexpectedly" Sept 8, 2021. I'd bet good money that "unexpectedly" is a euphemism for fentanyl, but of course I could be wrong.

Good to know, r153. I remember the poster, so I google imaged it, and was surprised to find it was Tom Cruise in the photo. I saw a couple of references to this, including this ebay listing with the headline, "LEVI'S 501 JEANS RETAILER'S POSTER 1982 TOM CRUISE." So I figured "oh well, it's Tom Cruise." Glad you let us know.
You don't know who the model is, do you? That's what I was really trying to find out.

Not 80’s homoerotica, but definitely inspired by then.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | May 23, 2022 2:18 PM |
R161 Yessss! Very remembered, these really stood out. These were shot in 2004, for Flaunt magazine.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | May 23, 2022 2:52 PM |
sorry r159, i dont know.

r158 not the same guy. the dates are off. Soloflex Scott was born in the 60s.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | May 23, 2022 4:19 PM |
Trust me, it's the same guy. And he's dead. -R158

Gonna keep this thread on watch.

R166, if this is your Scott Madsen, he would have to have been less than 10 years old when he started doing Soloflex ads. The one you link to has him 48 in 2010; the one who died was 47 in 2021.

r169 thank you... love r165 and r167 (thank you for going through the trouble)

“Uncle’s Vancouver business” sounds like a euphemism.

R151, the Pretty Puppy Party Pack Pic. I so wanted a poster for my wall (but would never have had the nerve to put it up). Link is to an alternate version where Ilan looked even cuter.
That movie gave 15-tear-old me very strong feelings from Chet's butt to Ian and Max's guyliner to yes, the male lead in Kelly Lebrock's underwear.

Anything with young Billy Warlock. I wanted to "Flip" him over and rim him cross-eyed.

Had this poster...the always sexy Jon Erik Hexum!!

This 1984 poster of Rob Lowe is something of a twofer - it shows up on the door of Corey Haim's closet in Lost Boys, also known as "Iconic Homoerotic 1980s Poster: The Movie"

R155 He was 16 at the time. Oldish, but I'd have made an exception.
