Yeah, sure.
Rupert Everett thinks Colin Firth ruined his career
by Anonymous | reply 90 | June 5, 2023 1:32 AM |
Clickbait headline. It does sound pissy but Rupert has some good points in this article.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | May 19, 2022 5:12 PM |
Rupert Everett was NEVER hot. Only Fraus ever thought he was a dreamboat.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 19, 2022 5:26 PM |
R3- I will say that he looks a HELL of a lot better ca. 1984 than he does now but he still had no sex appeal even then.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 19, 2022 5:31 PM |
He will be staring with Johnny Depp soon
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 19, 2022 5:35 PM |
Oh, when the stars, do be staring! My word.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 19, 2022 5:40 PM |
r2 r4 strikes me as one who believes "hot" is something that only happens below the neck.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 19, 2022 5:42 PM |
It was the plastic surgery, Rupert. Colin didn't force you to have plastic surgery, did he?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 19, 2022 5:43 PM |
R7- Christopher Reeve is another person who never had any sex appeal.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 19, 2022 5:43 PM |
[quote] Rupert Everett was NEVER hot.
Welcome Helen Keller to Datalounge, everyone!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 19, 2022 5:45 PM |
Look at these two now….getting old is a motherfucker.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 19, 2022 5:46 PM |
Poo fired!
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 19, 2022 5:48 PM |
He fucked up his face with that surgery he had. Wasn’t it after the Madonna movie?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 19, 2022 5:48 PM |
R11- Colin Firth now resembles an aging LESBIAN. Between the two Rupert Everett is aging better in spite of my saying he never had any curb appeal.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 19, 2022 5:48 PM |
Colin Firth needs a lifestyle lift or something. He’d be alright if he got all that neck mess straightened out.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 19, 2022 5:50 PM |
Rupert ruined his own career. He simply is not interesting enough for leading man roles.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 19, 2022 5:54 PM |
He made Another Country with Colin Firth in the 80s, and they appeared in the same movies in the 90s, 00s and 10s. No doubt they'll appear again together in the 20s.
Firth has played gay multiple times - Mamma Mia, A Single Man, Where The Truth Lies, Supernova and The Staircase and there are some sexually ambiguous roles too (was he a gay in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy?) so I can understand that Everett is a bit peeved, but they are good friends
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 19, 2022 5:56 PM |
I have never forgiven him for stabbing the gay community in the back with his statements against gay marriage and gay men having kids. He also claimed he wasn't gay, but bisexual. What an a-hole! His last movie on Oscar Wilde was a disaster - completely unwatchable - and made him, Oscar, look like a horrible sex pervert who deserved his fate. No wonder it was a bomb! Colin Firth was in it as a favor to Rupert.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 19, 2022 7:44 PM |
Doesn't he have a history of running his mouth?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 19, 2022 7:49 PM |
He should blame his decision to star in The Next Best Thing opposite pal Madonna. It's one of the most unwatchable rom-coms ever made and erased all the good will from his performance in My Best Friend's Wedding.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 19, 2022 8:13 PM |
wanted to read his book Are you working? but the NYPL doesnt have it
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 19, 2022 8:22 PM |
This kind of quote from Everett comes out every few years like clockwork. He's bitter, and while he does make some fair points, it always comes across as sour grapes. And also as an actor who has a WAY overinflated sense of his talents and abilities. He's a fine actor, particularly in light comedies, but his own vanity has always gotten in the way of more interesting parts.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 19, 2022 8:53 PM |
What a pissy, bitter old queen. He's simply not leading man material.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 19, 2022 9:01 PM |
Rupert is just pissed that Colin can pay gay as well as straight while he can only play gay.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 19, 2022 9:03 PM |
Yeah, he he had the horrible plastic surgery about that time, otherwise he wouldn’t have been bad. Firth is not that spectacular an actor (though very good in the Staircase). Though is chin and neck are now melting together, at least he looks like someone’s father or grandfather, easier to be cast.
Rupert was at his most beautiful in The Comfort of Strangers.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 19, 2022 9:15 PM |
Pissy old tiny dicked queen
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 19, 2022 9:19 PM |
OH BRITISH PEOPLE! Why do you age so poorly?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 19, 2022 9:25 PM |
Samuel West should have done A Single Man.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 19, 2022 9:56 PM |
I'm sorry to tell you this, Rupert, but Colin Firth can act rings around you. You did not get that part because you're not a good enough actor. All you ever do onscreen is Euromumble.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 19, 2022 10:29 PM |
Who?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 19, 2022 10:38 PM |
Firth is a better actor. Everett is always whining. He would have been terrible in "A Single Man"----his kind of self involvement would not have been as sympathetic. At best, Everett is good for light comedy and supporting roles.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 19, 2022 10:45 PM |
Rupes fucked up his early success by being a massive twat - many of his early colleagues still want nothing to do with him. He then came out as gay and made an admirable come-back, which he also fucked up by his big mouth (how he saved Julia Roberts' career and they were going to be the next Tracy and Hepburn in multiple films). He's had a more than good enough career for his ability, possibly better than he actually deserved on the basis of his talent. (I actually liked his Oscar Wilde film.)
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 19, 2022 11:00 PM |
Yeah, except Colin Firth was pretty near perfect with his understated performance in this film. Everett could have never matched it.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 19, 2022 11:16 PM |
The American short story writer John O'Hara had desperately wanted to go Yale but his father died leaving the family penniless his senior year of h.s., and he spent the rest of his life loudly complaining he had deserved to go to Yale. I Years later, I remember reading that the President of Yale, Kingman Brewster, Jr., refused to give O'Hara an honorary degree in his final years "because he wanted it too much."
I would like to think the same thing happened with Hollywood and Everett, but the truth is he's just not very talented or charismatic.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 19, 2022 11:17 PM |
Rupert is gay?
All he ever talks about in interviews is fucking women.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 19, 2022 11:19 PM |
Well, he was gay when he made his career comeback in gay roles. And also before then, when he was a fixture in Soho gay bars in the late 80s. I saw him several times drinking in Comptons, though always on his own (he was appearing the the West End at the time).

Spurning Julia Roberts in favor of being Madonna's go to fag was a supremely stupid move in hindsight. Julia may be a bitch, but she supposedly is very loyal to her friends. And from many accounts at the time, she genuinely liked Rupert. If he played his cards right, his career would have progressed quite nicely.
Instead, he hitched his wagon to Madonna, made that awful movie together where he joined her in treating the director John Schlesinger like crap, and then stood by as Madonna behaved like a raging bitch to Julia at the movies premiere. Only to have her dump him like she has 99% of her friends when they no longer become useful to her.
No ones fault but his own. And that face job is terrible to boot.

I loved when they stuffed him into Hearts of Fire with the godawful Fiona. When the rival love interest is a coked out Bob Dylan and he's still a better actor than you, it's time to get out of the biz.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 20, 2022 3:08 AM |
R3 so not right. Like. Let me guess, you so totally like literally start sentences with so often

Nah, he's one of a generation of the children of actors who were decent enough but never destined for stardom. See Jennifer Ehle, Max Irons, Toby Stephens, Joely Richardson and Jason Connery, all of whom are in a totally different league to Finty Williams and Abigail Hopkins who are soon to be joined by Kate Winslet's daughter and Emma Thompson's daughter,

Perhaps a shrubbery?
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 20, 2022 5:54 PM |
Rupert is not a strong actor. Colin Firth was PERFECT in A Single Man. He should have won the Oscar for that film instead of The King's Speech. Firth was so moving and haunting in A Single Man. It was a very insular, introspective, and subtle performance, which Everett would never have been able to pull off as Firth did.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 21, 2022 3:11 AM |
His ex-girlfriend Beatrice Dalle still likes him ("He is in my heart until the day I die"). She even showed up in that Oscar Wilde movie he made in 2018.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 21, 2022 3:19 AM |
Julia Roberts had way more power in the movie industry than Madonna. Him choosing that crazy bitch over America's Sweetheart at her most beloved makes me think her felt he was in a cool contest. The biggest pop music star vs the biggest movie starr in the world. He made the wrong choice
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 21, 2022 5:06 AM |
The Next Best Thing is one of the worst movies mostly because the egos of Madonna and Rupert stink up the entire film
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 21, 2022 5:34 AM |

Maybe Julia was the bigger cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 21, 2022 5:39 AM |
Most high powered people in the movie industry respect Julia Roberts. No one in the music industry respects Madonna the same way.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | May 21, 2022 5:42 AM |
But Julia could still be more unpleasant personally.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 21, 2022 5:43 AM |
R56 Touche. By all accounts Julia is a cuntess superme. But she is a movie star.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | May 21, 2022 5:45 AM |
He's too botoxed to play most roles.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 21, 2022 5:56 AM |
Julia took him as her date to a bunch of awards shows in 1997-98 including the Golden Globes and the whole awards season. She was widely thought to be a likely Oscar nominee and he himself was almost Oscar nominated.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | May 21, 2022 6:00 AM |
Everyone knows she's not a very nice person.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | May 21, 2022 6:03 AM |
They both would have sucked in the role.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 21, 2022 6:08 AM |
Madonna did not like Julia Roberts going to that premiere and then the audience acting like it was her premiere. That's why she was so awful to her. That's actually when she made that weird quote " she's the one person almost as famous as me".
by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 21, 2022 6:11 AM |
No hon was she was actually more famous than you then. And had 2 Oscar nominations at 24 years old
by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 21, 2022 6:12 AM |
Barf.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | May 21, 2022 6:15 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 65 | May 21, 2022 6:20 AM |
I love how this has become a thread about Horse Face because Rupert is such a non-entity.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | May 21, 2022 6:24 AM |
It's so amazing she got that nomination. Tri Star put all five 5 against each other. Sally got the Lead Actress ads. She was luminous in the part though
by Anonymous | reply 67 | May 21, 2022 6:24 AM |
Julia was so charismatic in her first few years - Satisfaction, Mystic Pizza, Steel Magnolias, Pretty Woman and Sleeping with the Enemy. She just oozed charisma and was a joy to watch onscreen. I know she's not well-liked here on DL but I loved the first few years of Julia's movie career.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | May 21, 2022 6:32 AM |
Rupert had the two most famous women in the world as fag hags and he fucked that up too
by Anonymous | reply 69 | May 21, 2022 6:35 AM |
Did Julia really have 2 Oscar nominations at 24?
by Anonymous | reply 70 | May 21, 2022 6:43 AM |
Steel Magnolias in 1989 and Pretty Woman in 1990 r70.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | May 21, 2022 7:27 AM |
Brenda Fricker was marvelous. But it's universally assumed that had Pretty Woman opened during the balloting Julia would have won for Steel Magnolias having just won the Golden Globe.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | May 21, 2022 9:10 AM |
There was no way she was not getting nominated for Pretty Woman. Gene Siskel - "This woman lit up the screen in the most remarkable way. We really saw the birth of a major star here. I thought she would get the nomination and she absolutely does deserve it.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | May 21, 2022 9:21 AM |
R63, i think you are thinking in terms of america and the uk. Worldwise, Madonna was more famous (not respected or talented or whatever, but famous). Julia Roberts was not as famous worldwide.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | May 21, 2022 3:33 PM |
Rupert’s career was ruined by his habit of burning every bridge he happens upon.
[quote]He’s insufferable in his book.

I agree. She’s a raging bitch in person by all accounts, but a talented one and she has charisma to burn.

R74 in a lot of countries Roberts is still the most famous actress in the world.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | May 22, 2022 1:13 AM |
Let's not overdo it, r74.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | May 22, 2022 1:28 AM |
Rupes has a case for saving Roberts' career - she was on a run of stinkers and initially MBFW wasn't testing well, but Everett's part was very well received and it got expanded in reshoots and he was brought back at the end of the movie and the rest is history! He then got overexcited - you may outshine a top star once, but it ain't happening again, no matter how much she owes you.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | May 22, 2022 12:54 PM |
It should have been an American actor. Colin didn’t have a damn clue about his accent. And Rupert would have been much worse.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | May 22, 2022 12:57 PM |
I don’t see Rupert as a college professor. Colin Firth continues to work because he’s the British version of Tom Hanks and fits comfortably into “Everyman” roles.
Plus, his logic is insane: I’m gay so I should be considered for gay roles? Maybe he should consider a career in porn.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | May 22, 2022 1:06 PM |
Firth is more of a slightly upper middle class everyman., but there always are roles for people like that. The best that Everett was going to do was "gay best friend". If he had some humility and more smarts, he'd grin and bear it all the way to the bank.
Steel Magnolias is just so cliche ridden and any movie with a melodramatic death (like this or "Terms of Endearment") just seems predictable and eye rolling to me.

Could Rupert Everett have found his career niche somewhere between Derek Jacobi and Ian McKellen or was his ability not that strong? Whose career could he have had, personality aside.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | May 22, 2022 2:57 PM |
Rupert's prostheticked up for his latest acting role.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | May 22, 2022 4:48 PM |
He says he is bi, not gay. Currently he has female sexual partners, no men.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | May 22, 2022 6:32 PM |
He's probably worked his way through the entire pool of available men.
[quote]Could Rupert Everett have found his career niche somewhere between Derek Jacobi and Ian McKellen or was his ability not that strong?
Both of them could act circles around him in their sleep. Not that he's a bad actor, but they're both grande dames of the British stage and cinema.

[quote] Whose career could he have had, personality aside.
I always think his best analogue is James Purefoy, who is younger but the same type (dark hair, great body, very handsome, but only a so-so actor). Purefoy also has complained bitterly he never had the kind of career he thought he should have, and he can't even fall back on being gay and out as an excuse since he's straight.
I think they both think they could have been James Bond, and maybe they both could have been had the cards fallen their way. But neither of them was chosen to be Bond--and let's face it, neither of them had the kind of superphotogenic appeal that Pierce Brosnan or Daniel Craig had (and Craig is a better actor than either of them or than Brosnan).
Rupert Everett's career is his career. He was once good looking, but Brits who smoke and drink and spend too much time in the sun are going to ruin their skin, and that's exactly what happened with him. He did not have the kind of talent that other dark handsome British men who did better with their careers did, like Jeremy Northam and Richard Armitage, but they are both more versatile actors than Everett and were willing to play character work early in their careers as well as leading men.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | May 23, 2022 11:19 PM |
[quote] Purefoy also has complained bitterly he never had the kind of career he thought he should have,
Perhaps he would have had a better career if he hadn’t flounced off “V For Vendetta”.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | May 24, 2022 2:07 AM |
I'd say Purefoy is better looking than Brosnan and especially Craig, whom even Everett might have exceeded in terms of looks (back before he turned his face into a Halloween mask). But Brosnan and Craig are both better actors, have charm to burn, and are generally well-talked about by former coworkers—which shouldn't be underestimated as a reason for continued success.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | June 4, 2023 5:53 PM |
What's the deal with Purefoy? I think he's gorgeous but he comes across as a bit of an asshole. I was pissed when they dropped his series on FX. I loved the books.
