Amazing that he's only 17, and that he's only played one professional game of football for his club, coming on a sub for the last 10 minutes.
He has shown a lot of promise though.
Good luck to him.

Devil's advocate honest question: if he's straight, why should he?
In fact, why should anybody wear a "gay pride" uniform as part of their work attire? Unless you're working for a gay pride organization....

R11 he's the club's Youth Player of the Year. Blackpool are a Championship squad: the league below the top tier. Now that Jake's had the balls to step forward and be the first, hopefully that will pave the way for a more high profile player to follow suit.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 16, 2022 5:22 PM |
R17 Ever thought that supporting causes is actually part of your employer's business? Because often it is. It's not just gay rights, I see companies supporting cancer charities, food banks and so on.

Football clubs in Europe are have fan-based, local origins. They do an enormous amount of community outreach and charity work as a necessity. There are club-supported teams, for special needs children, fundraising for mens health, cancer, mental health, celebrations of the contribution of mothers/partners/female fans to the game, outreach to racial and ethnic minorities and the LGBT community.

Jake is the first UK male pro footballer to come out since 1990. That's THIRTY TWO years. I think that everyone, including me, should give him a little more credit for this.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 16, 2022 5:38 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 16, 2022 5:44 PM |
There is obviously going to be some pushback on this from a lot of fans but the Premier League and most importantly the captains of other clubs will show leadership.
At the weekend Spurs beat Burnley and 2 Burnley fans were in the stands giving Nazi salutes because Spurs is seen as Jewish club. Brighton is seen a gay club and the players receive homophobic taunts from opposing fans.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 16, 2022 5:48 PM |
Good for him to stand up and be counted in a sport where he will surely meet with abuse from the stands.
I was not that brave at 17.
His family, friends, teammates, fans, and all should be proud that such a young man in the spotlight demonstrates such strength of character.

It's really quite moving.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 16, 2022 6:04 PM |
r19, and I don't think it's appropriate to tell the employees they must also support or endorse those charities. If I want to do so in my personal life, I will, but I simply don't think an employer should tell its employees what to think or believe. I work merely to put a roof over my head and food on my table, that's all.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 16, 2022 6:30 PM |
Yeah, and did you see the Goat People swarming in response to those tweets, r26? It seems like every club that posted something supportive was immediately bombarded with hateful squiggles (or whatever you want to call that garbage). Soccer is such a paradox in that such a wimpy product on the field produces such psychos in the stands. Of all the pro sports I can think of, soccer is the only one where I think a top player coming out might be in real danger from fans.
A top soccer player coming out would be one of the bravest people on the planet, bar none.

[quote] Amazing that he's 17, and that he's only played one professional game of football for his club, coming on a sub for the last 10 minutes.
R2 jsyk, it's a completely normal trajectory in English football, for a junior player (anyone under the age of 19-21, basically) to have not broken in to the pro game at the top senior level. Actually, to have already started or come on the pitch for a pro game for the seniors at age 16/17 is an achievement--usually only one or two players in a team if that ever make it onto the grass with the big boys so soon. It's far more common to get a first senior cap at age 19-21. So Jake must either be quite a talent or quite a workhorse, if John Murphy (Blackpool U18 Manager) has sent him up with full confidence so soon.
For example, there's currently only one 18-year old (just had his birthday) playing for the senior England mens' team at the moment, Jude Bellingham, and he's been the first one in years to come through and get a cap at that young an age. The second-youngest senior squad players after Jude are all age 21 (and act like they’re 12).
The culture in the U.K. to produce these wunderkinds--young British lads who show footballing promise are plucked from mainstream schooling, and, for want of a better word, groomed for some 10 to 12 years so that they can run onto the field as professionals by the time they come of age. Even with this rigorous and specialised training, the nature of growth spurts and mental maturity mean that most boys are not thrown into the lions' den before about age 17/18-- their bodies and minds are not ready to play against grown men before this point.

??!! If Jake Daniels was American he'd be signed by a Major Soccer League club or would have been scouted and signed by a European club, and would be in contention for a place in the World Cup squad for Qatar.
That's not because Daniels is an outstanding talent - there's decent promise - but because the lack of talent in the US men's squad.

Senior players need to come out now. There are allegedly many gay players who are stuck in the closet because they are scared of the fans’ reaction, the media, etc. If they came out it would mean even more than a young man at the beginning of his career who has nothing to lose.

[quote] Blackpool FC doesn't play in the Premier League. They're in a lower-tier league called "The Championship". No one outside of Blackpool has heard of this kid.
Daniels may be young and fairly unknown now, but he is undeniably a pro-player in a major League, with a significant position in the game.
The Championship, aka the EFL (English Football League), is Tier 2 of 10 in the Football Association (F.A.)-designated pyramid of top English/Welsh playing divisions (nb. Scotland & Ireland/ROI have different hierarchies), in which Tier 1 is the EPL (English Premier League) that everyone knows globally. So the EFL really isn't 'lower-tier', and players in that division are hardly obscure. EFL players are well-paid full-time professions, who can be traded between global clubs on the open market. EFL players even get call-ups for the national squad, though this doesn't happen quite as often as it should. Sports supplements in the national papers have a page for Championship match reviews, in which specific players are discussed. Tiers 2-5 of English/Welsh division football get more media attention and sponsorship than the top level leagues of less popular sports, like say netball or cycling or angling.
The EFL has many Premier League-calibre players, many who have had misfortunes such as injuries or bad agents or lack of game time, and several Premier League-calibre teams, who simply can't quite afford the entry fee to the Prem or who haven't quite got the ideal management or squad cohesion to keep up with the Tier 1 contenders. Sometimes, teams at the bottom of the EPL table choose or embrace relegation to the EFL, because by accepting a demotion a team gets a financial compensation/cushion as well as less pressure to keep spending and playing beyond their means in order to keep up with the Guardiolas of the game. All this to say, the EFL is a serious high level, just not quite superstar standard like the EPL.
For actual 'lower-tier' football in England & Wales, you'd be looking at part-time or 'non-League' footballers, those found in divisions of Tiers 5-10 of the pyramid. These are the players who are not classified as official F.A.-calibre League players or professionals, who play as a side-job and can't make a living from football alone, who do have relative obscurity outside their hometown, and whose clubs aren't eligible for any big competitions (except the FA Trophy which literally any backwoods team can go for if they quality).
For example, the team of my old home county/city currently play in National League North, which falls in Tier 6 of the pyramid. A you'd expect, this is a team made up of local school/College kid players starting their careers, foreign players new to the English leagues but hoping to break in to a higher Tier by paying dues, and over-the-hill EFL/League 1/League 2 players who have aged/lapsed out of their professional sides. In our Skipper's younger days, he used to play for the (then) Premier League team West Bromwich Albion.

"Joe White, co-chair of Pride In Football, a network of UK LGBTQ+ fan groups, said it was "wonderful" news.
They said: "I can't stop smiling whenever we're talking about it so I think that says it all."
Mr White said that when they were young, football was "not a welcoming place" for LGBTQ+ people.
"I'd go to games and you'd hear homophobic chanting, homophobic slurs.
"And when you realise that, actually, those words are about someone like you, it makes it feel like football is an alienating place and not somewhere that you are welcome as your authentic self."
Mr White said having an openly gay footballer in the men's game, and "just seeing someone like you on the pitch", could have a "powerful" effect for LGBTQ+ fans."

Problem is, every fan/player wants there to be an Out senior Prem player, only not in *their* team, because that will mean a vulnerability that could cost a game.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | May 17, 2022 1:38 PM |
^^forgot to clarify---not meaning 'vulnerability' to imply that gay players are weak or bitches, rather just that opponents may choose to target such a player (an opponent trying to heckle or taunt will weaponise any perceived difference, even if that bigotry does not correlate with their true beliefs off the pitch). You don't want to give a team you're playing any excuse to go in on your players with a view to distracting from the game--focus needs to be on the ball and that alone.

He isn't part of a Championship squad, yet.
He's been playing with the youth team and only recently signed a professional contract with Blackpool. To date he played the last 10 minutes in the last game of the season in a match Blackpool lost 5-0 with the score being 3-0 when Daniels came on.
Theo Walcott was 16 when he made his Championship debut for Southampton and they agreed a transfer to Arsenal when he was still 16. After moving to Arsenal Walcott waited until he was 17 to sign a professional contract. In his first full year at Arsenal he played 16 times in the league and was targeted by older players because of he was perceived as physically weak.

You know what it is about Jake Daniels coming out that’s so wild to me? It’s his age. Because he’s just so SO young, still a boy in some ways really, and he’s got his whole career ahead of him.
Like, this is undoubtedly going to shake things up in the football world even more as he progresses. It’s not a one-and-done. It’s going to radically alter his entire experience of existence.
And that makes what he’s done braver than if it had been a more established older player. At 17 he’s in totally uncharted territory. It shouldn’t be that way, but he’s essentially defining himself as ‘the gay player’ before his adult life and career’s even started, incurring all the danger that comes with it, and YET here he is, bravely owning it anyway and choosing to take the high proud open road.
He’ll be hoping to transfer one day. He’ll be hoping to excel in the Prem one day. He hasn’t got a clue how he’ll be received as his career progresses (as much as we hope times have changed, there’s a reason he’s the first in 30 years). and still he’s taken the leap, made the first move, and come out anyway, for the sake of his peers and successors in the game.
This is fucking massive of him. He’s a trailblazing football icon, and we fans are so very very proud 🏳️🌈

The gumption of that lying little slag Grealish, giving a statement to the press (admittedly, a very nice and respectful one) about Jake’s brave step forward, while at the same time sacking off a crucial season-deciding Man City training session he’s meant to be at, so he could go and do a charity event as an excuse to meet up with his hush boyfriend instead.
[quote] Jack Grealish is now part of a national outreach programme, to make the sport more inclusive and accessible for the country's most deprived children. He says, “I saw there was a guy in Australia, in the A-league that came out, and I hope it pushed Jake Daniels to be able to think he could do that as well. And I think now, fingers crossed, for everyone that can be a big step forward because football is for absolutely everyone. [Jake, coming out] showed a lot of courage, and no one can disagree with that. I think it's absolutely brilliant, and it's a massive step forward." As well as Manchester City's Jack Grealish, Liverpool's Jordan Henderson sneaked in an extra training session in the sun.

R169 he won't be getting it from other players, though...
The same-sex activity that goes on in football takes place between players (whether gay, bi or flexible) who all have an unspoken understanding that "this never leaves the circle". Interestingly, by breaking the silence, Jake has set himself apart and put himself at remove from those other players with homosexual desires, because he is willing to step out of the circle and say something. These downlow players will feel unsafe around Jake, because of his honesty.

by Anonymous | reply 181 | May 21, 2022 11:52 AM |
R180 if you’d take the time to reread my initial comment, you’ll see, in fact, that the point I made was: no other *current player* still *in the closet* will want to risk sleeping with him, for fear of potentially outing themselves, because while Jake’s action is a sea-change, the tide is sti high so to speak. No-one in the mens’ senior game is quite ready for open casual gay relationships & hookups to be made plain, as they are in the womens’ game.
And you’ll note that I said nothing about non-Prem-footballer gay men being off-limits as romantic/sexual prospects for Jake, whether in or out of the business—maybe he’ll fall for and date a linesman or referee or coach or a non-League player, who knows?
As it goes, I’m confident that Jake with his sterling qualities and nice looks can have any other man he wants—just not one that with whom he’s on the pitch fighting over a plastic ball. Which is fine, because being as open and mature and accepting as he has, why would he want a self-loathing closet-case jock moron anyway? Prem footballers might have great bodies and cash to splash, but beyond that they’re poor relationships prospects. Jake deserves better.
Terribly sorry that you missed the nuance of my point.

The age of consent is 16 in most cases but 18 if the partner is in a "position of trust" so his club manager, agent, team captain, physio etc would be breaking the law if they had consensual sex.

by Anonymous | reply 221 | May 22, 2022 10:26 AM |
Fashanu was an established player, he was almost 30 when he came out.
Hopefully times changed, because Fashanu was treated awfully bad
by Anonymous | reply 222 | May 22, 2022 10:29 AM |
Hate to say this, but part of the problem for Justin Fashanu was his homophobic brother, and also his difficult and unstable childhood.
Justin was born to staunch Christians from an African background (Nigerian-Guyanese), who could not take care of children, and so he was placed into foster-care at age 6, along with his younger brother John. After a few years’ stint in the rather dreadful and unforgiving English foster-care system of the 1970s (one wonders about the likelihood of abuse...), both brothers were taken in by an older couple from Norfolk.
When, many years later, the news broke about Justin’s death, his suicide note told the tale—Justin concluded his short farewell with the words, ‘I do not want to give any more embarrassment to my friends and family‘. He clearly believed that imprisonment—American authorities later admitted that, had Justin lived and been found, he would have been looking at extradition and trial with a potential 20-year sentence—on top of a public outing would heap shame upon his ancestors and associates, not just himself. To reinforce this belief, John publicly disparaged his late sibling for his sexuality, even going so far as to say that Justin was not really gay but rather “seeking attention” and chasing a sexual thrill (he retracted this statement more recently). After Justin’s passing, neither set of his parents could be tracked down for any statement or comment.
As far as we know, Jake comes from a more tolerant and settled background, living with his birth family who are not only more modern but seem more stable and loving and supportive. It seems likely that Jake won’t face all that Justin did, mostly because Jake ensured that destructive and poisonous shame would not be a part of his adult to life come, and took away any leverage others may try to have over him early on.

It's really lucky Jake came out ten days ago and not this weekend, because from tonight (depending on the result) many thousands of fans are gonna be heartbroken and not want to hear any news or headlines about football for a couple of months. It's a game where emotions often run very high.
It's also lucky for Jake that he doesn't currently play for a top-table Prem club or come from the youth training academy of one. Life would have been a bit of a dicey prospect for him today as a Manc or a Scouser. As it is, no-one's really troubled by Blackpool F.C. or their fans, respectable and strong as they are in their division.

He follows a lot of older muscular gay men on instagram. Including some onlyfans whores and the London Seacow Sam Smith.
by Anonymous | reply 258 | May 27, 2022 9:24 PM |
R258 Sam Smith is a sellout and a self-loather, he doesn't want to be a gay man. Last person Jake should be following or looking up to.

He's also following a woman with an Only Fans account.
Not sure he's managing his own Instagram. It was mostly footballers and some private accounts until he signed with Adidas earlier this year. Someone in his management team would have added Tom Daley, Sam Smith. Calum Scott and Elton John.

by Anonymous | reply 265 | May 28, 2022 3:36 PM |
R265 he announced a partnership with Adidas months ago, before he came out. it's because they sign with promising young players before they become big names. sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't. and he has the talent. last year he was the leading scorer on the U18 team with 30 goals and took them deep into the youth FA Cup.
by Anonymous | reply 266 | May 28, 2022 4:33 PM |

Blackpool have played 5 games this season so far. 4 league matches and 1 cup match. He wasn't in the squad for any of them.
He's not a full squad member - he's on Blackpool's website being part of the development team.
A lot of people with no knowledge of football thought he was on par with Marcus Rashford or Raheem Stirling.

R303 what can I say? I'm just better, just different gravy ;) It's the way the cosmos is telling me that I should actually be chauffeured everywhere and that it is beneath me to drive!
by Anonymous | reply 305 | November 22, 2022 2:23 PM |
R299 Indeed. I'm from the UK and our driving test is pretty tough, as one major fault means an instant fail. The problem is that many things fall into the definition of a 'major' fault - even if you stop slightly over the white line when at traffic lights. (For context, in the UK, the white stop line is far back from the junction.)
In addition, you can only make the same minor fault two times. Make the same minor fault again in the test, it's an instant failure.
Add to that, most people here drive cars with manual gears, which adds to the difficulty.
And, while anyone says I'm making excuses for multiple driving test failures, I actually passed first time. My brother failed twice and he's actually a very good and safe driver.

There's absolutely nothing unusual about wanting to be with someone substantially older who already knows how to navigate the gay life and -- most importantly -- knows how to navigate in the sack because18-year-olds famously are shit in bed. This has been happening since time immemorial. Also, it's very much not a lock that he's a bottom. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

COMMUNITY NOTES FACT CHECK!
Jake Daniels came out a year ago, not two years ago.
Jake Daniels was 17 when he came out, making him 18 now
The age of consent in the UK is 16, unless the older party is an "authority figure" in which case it is 18, so provided "Mark, 45" wasn't Jake's teacher, football coach, doctor, priest etc, the relationship is perfectly legal.
That doesn't make Mark's actions especially pleasant.
by Anonymous | reply 320 | May 19, 2023 11:27 AM |
r320 Yes, a year ago and not 2. And it was borderline illegal since it was just one year older than the legal age. In many other European countries he would've been prosecuted. But it's still disgusting. Geez, dude, what's wrong with you? Couldn't you find someone your own age or closer to it? There are so many hot 20 and 30 somethings to date! Ewwwwwwww And I agree it seems like an unwritten rule in sports

I get this point of view. A horny inexperienced 17/18 year old wants someone experienced to have sex with. I get that. I did it when I was 21 and came out, and most of the men I shagged were in their 30s.

And I endorse this point of view. What 17 year old would not be interested in a fuck with Anthony Mackie, Usher, Tom Ellis, Ben Cohen the rugby player (people born in 1978) but the onus is on the older guy to accept it's creepy for a man that age to be fucking a 17 year old.
Dan Savage had a term for this experience, something like the "picnic area" of intergenerational dating, where the older person has to make sure the young person is in good condition when done.

If they'd just met I wouldn't say so much, but Jake made it clear this guy DMed him when he came out and he was only 17 then. He didn't turn 18 for another 8 months after that.

An ageing homosexual has taken issue with the homophobic ickiness at the age gap
[quote]Seeing a lot of moralising by gays today about an interview with the 18-year-old footballer Jake Daniels in which he talks lovingly about his 46-year-old partner. While two adults' consensual relationship is none of my business, what bothers me is some of the language being used.
[quote]Talk of 'predatory older men' 'taking advantage' of 'impressionable' younger men is EXACTLY the language that was used to keep the age of consent at 21 until 1994 & to oppose its eventual equalisation until 2000. It's also a very close cousin of the far-right 'groomer' narrative.
[quote]You can be impressionable, vulnerable or predatory at any age. And all relationships and interactions must start with consent. You can absolutely know your own mind and who you're attracted to at 18; you can be naïve & vulnerable at 46. There is no one-size-fits-all.
[quote]Age gaps might give you the ick, you might be uncomfortable reading about it, but talk of being 'predatory' and 'immoral' is a narrative that's been used to deprive gay men of equality for decades. Don't let's us, as gay men, turn that weapon back on ourselves.
I don't think it is homophobic, just icky.
If Millie Bobbie Brown (19) was to date John Cena (46) I'm sure people would question Cena more than Brown.

Out and proud Gays in professional sport have to look respectable to remain suitable for mainstream endorsement deals. That's why they partner up with older gents in public and keep the whoring more or less (like, Dailey's DMs with hot guys on social media) behind closed doors. Even retired sports guys like Colton Underwood do it.
by Anonymous | reply 356 | May 20, 2023 11:47 AM |
I think we have to remember that one of the side effects of mainstreaming is that we start to adopt heterosexual norms, even when the core motivation (to protect women's status) doesn't really apply to homosexual relationships.

R355. That's because he serial dates women in their twenties. It comes off as really predatory.

Seriously, behaviour at women's football matches in England is a really healthy environment. It's a huge family experience, safe to take young kids with affordable tickets.

This is such a perfect example of the relative respectability politics at play here. R371 has decided that what he does is fine and appropriate, but anything past the point of what he does himself is inappropriate and creepy.
R371 certain commenters on this thread and the age gap pearl clutcher losers on twitter would call you inappropriate and creepy for what you’ve just said, do you think that’s ok?
The only important factor here is whether it was legal and consensual, both of which have been satisfied. Anything past that is just people being judgmental. You’re also telling this young gay guy that he’s a victim of some sort of sexual abuse when he’s trying to celebrate his relationship, not cute.

I just listened to Jake Daniels' half-hour podcast interview with host, Rylan Clark, in his "How to Be a Man" series at BBC Radio 4. and wow, for an 18-year old, Jake is very well-spoken and comes across as a really nice, intelligent young man. .. "Inspirational" is the term Rylan used at the conclusion, and I couldn't agree more.
btw - In the interview, Rylan read the email that Jake sent to his family when he decided to tell them he was gay, and in it he explained why his teammates couldn't find out yet, because he felt that being around other guys 24/7, he'd be judged, then adding, "The thing is, I don't have any attraction to lads my own age, but obviously no one's going to believe me."

r399 Yeah, I wonder what did happen between him and his father during his childhood
by Anonymous | reply 400 | May 21, 2023 10:33 PM |
R400 There's mention of his childhood in the lengthy March 12 Sunday Times (UK) interview-article with him. There doesn't seem to be any problem with his father.
[quote] Daniels had planned on never telling anyone he was gay. He knew he was by the time he joined Blackpool FC at the age of seven. His parents had divorced when he was two, but his dad lived five minutes away and he was close to both parents; they weren’t the reason why he kept quiet. I had assumed it was concern for his future football career — but what he was really worried about, he says, was losing his friends.
And after telling his mother and sister (the two he lives with) that he was gay, the article says: "Coming out to his wider family in the days that followed went equally well," and the problem Daniels goes on to describe came later when his mother found out he was communicating with a 34-year old man.
[quote] Coming out to his wider family in the days that followed went equally well, but a few months later things began to get bumpy. By now he can smile and tell it as tragicomic farce, but at the time it must have been awful for everyone. Too young to go to a gay bar and too scared of being recognised to risk a dating app, his first gay flirtation began with a man he met on Instagram. When his mum found out the man was 34 she freaked out, panicking that her 17-year-old son was being groomed, and so his first gay encounter ended in a police investigation. Nothing untoward was found, but Daniels was furious. He tried to meet another older man in a hotel, but his mum was suspicious and phoned him. Daniels pretended to be at a friend’s house but she wanted proof via FaceTime, so he stalled for time by claiming to be on the loo while he raced to another mate’s house around the corner. He thought he’d got away with it, until his mum recognised the wrong friend’s living room. What his mother found so difficult at first, however, was the very thing that made Daniels feel able to come out to his club. “I find older guys attractive. For me, 30 is too young. Over 40 is better.” Telling his team-mates would have been harder, he says, if they thought he might fancy them.

R408 according to my pretty reliable sources, Jack (stood one from right in the pic at the link) stands at 5ft 9". Mason (stood furthest left) is clearly an inch or two shorter and considerably slighter built than Jack.
Mason is one of the smaller players of the England national senior squad--not small or short for an everyday man, no, but on the smaller side for a strong athlete playing a contact sport. The shortest of the current England team would be 'Little' Phil Foden (stood centre) who can only be 5ft. 5" or 6" at the utmost; in videos, I've seen women and preteen children tower over him.
For general reference and comparison, Jordan Henderson (one from left) is said to stand at 6ft. exactly, and Marcus Rashford (furthest right) at 5"11. Both Jack and Mason are evidently shorter than both.

Americans have an unhealthy obsession with height: they think anything below 6 foot is short, regardless of whether it's 5'3' or 5'11'. This doesn't happen anywhere else on the planet. No wonder everyone stereotype you as the most ignorant people on Earth. And what does American football even have to do with soccer? And comparing different heights of different players of DIFFERENT SPORTS really speaks volumes on how close-minded and ignorant the average American is.

You're all engulfed in flames because I remarked--offhand and apropos of nothing--that Mason Mount is a pocket twunk (he is) and not ideal material physically for a top as R403 seems to imagine. Perhaps appearances are deceiving however, and Money Mase can really do the business though (with girls or lads) despite his stature and build. Idk, it's not my business, I don't know him or what he gets up to, and he isn't forthcoming about it so I suppose we may never know. Tumblr girls are free to imagine getting dicked down by him if they wish, not my bag but to each their own.
This thread is about the life and travails of confirmed out bottom(?) Jake Daniels though so...we could just get back to that...
(also fwiw Nate I'm a Brit and I daresay know my football. True to say height isn't a huge issue or advantage in the sport unless you're a GK or a defender, and in fact there's a case to say that wingers & forwards are more effective players if they're shorter than 6ft., Peter Crouch being the notorious exception)

R427 Do you live in Europe? At below 1.80m you would be a fairly short man compared to the general younger male population. In the Netherlands or among Serbs, Croatians etc. you would be a distinctly short man.
And I just making fun of Nate, btw, who kept making rude comments while asking ‘what does height have to do with anything”? Mason Mount definitely is in the normal range for a footballer, he doesn’t really have a problem. A bit more height could give him more physical assertiveness and aerial duels are indeed his weakness according to Sofascore. But he’s fine overall although fans do like to belittle him for his physique a bit.

r435 Not everyone lives in the Balkans or Netherlands, you retard. In Spain, Portugal and Malta, for instance, you'd be perfectly fine

They make fun of his build? Really? What should they do with Messi or Neymar, who are even shorter? I find it so hard to believe! There are some Serie A players who are 5'5' or under! The stuff I have to read
by Anonymous | reply 438 | May 22, 2023 1:37 AM |
Anyone who considers 5'10' short (when it's way taller than the average woman, even in the Netherlands) is a retard and shouldn't be interacted with. Don't feed the troll, guys!

R436 Obviously, Mason Mount is being compared to his team mates and opponents as in R411 for example. But even among the general younger male population, he definitely would not be considered tall….
by Anonymous | reply 442 | May 22, 2023 1:47 AM |
Never heard of this guy before, but he strikes me as perfectly average in every way, height included. He doesn't get dwarfed in any pic, and how could he? Brits are not exactly famous for being giants
by Anonymous | reply 443 | May 22, 2023 1:48 AM |
Football is not a sport famous for the height of its players except goalies. Don't know what you're even on calling a 1.78 guy short, when (as mentioned upthread) Messi, Neymar, etc are even shorter. Maybe even Grealish, and nobody ever mocks him 🤷🏼

I remember being so horny when I was 20 that a big cock was a big cock whether attached to another 20 year old guy or a 40 year old guy. Once I hit on a guy in his late 50s because he had such a huge cock, I literally lost my mind! And it's true that guys in their 30s and 40s are more inspired in the sack than other 20 year old who are quite content with just mutual masturbation. So I get the thrill, I get the attraction to someone in their 40s, not as something I still experience today (at 50) but as something I experienced in my early 20s. I also have two friends who looked at father figures and not only when they were 20 but still at 50 are only attracted to guys above their age. It's harder for me to relate to that, but hey, who am I to judge?

R451 frankly, Blackpool F.C. (the club for which Jake currently plays in the U18 squad) aren’t looking too clever at the moment.
At the end of this season and at the time of writing, they have finished 23rd in the standings (EFL/Championship, aka League 0ne) out of 24. Which puts them in the dreaded relegation zone, meaning they alongside the two other lowest performing teams (this year, Wigan Athletic & Reading) have earned a demotion to a lower ranked league, where they shall sadly receive fewer cup competition opportunities, less press coverage, and therefore reduced access/money to sign decent players.
It’s no wonder, given that Blackpool let go of their senior head coach & assistant coach back in January, off the back of ten defeats in a row. Worth noting that five months ago, Blackpool were in the same dismal standings position that they’ve finished in now, so this drastic personnel change did nothing to help them survive their fight to stay in a top league. Blackpool closed out their season on a measly 44 points total, with the same humble number of wins as draws (11) and more than double the losses (24), and a goal difference of -24. While their final salvo these last couple of months has been heroic, ultimately and brutally they’ve simply not done enough to stay in League One.
Am unsure whether Jake is a wantaway (player who wants to leave his underperforming club, but can’t), but if he plans to progress in English football while he’s still young and strike while the iron is hot, he ought expeditiously to get to the negotiation table with clubs higher up the EFL table and perhaps even low-performing EPL (Premier League) clubs if they’ll hear him out. Hopefully he’s got a pushy and conscientious agent as well as supportI’ve parents. A footballer’s career progression, rightly or wrongly, rests more in the hand of Fate and in the hands of clubs willing to give him a chance, more than talent or hard work that keeps you at a certain level.

[R452] Thanks!! I get it now
by Anonymous | reply 453 | May 22, 2023 10:42 AM |
R453 you’re most welcome my love🐣
One little note I’d forgotten to mention—relegation isn’t always all bad, nor is it necessarily a death sentence. If a club lacks the talent, organisation, personnel/resources & drive to achieve in a higher league, and cannot attract or manufacture anything better, then demotion to a smaller lower league to compete with ‘minnows’ (smaller, less threatening clubs) can sometimes drastically improve the chances of winning silverware or finishing in a high league position, which thereby raises the profile of the club and makes it more attractive within a bracket of more modest talent.
E.g. without either sudden massive investment out of nowhere by a generous benefactor or a run of form that defies the laws of nature, Blackpool will not ever compete in the Premier League. So they’re best off finding their level so to speak, and challenging a pool teams against whom they have an outside chance of winning or drawing.
As a football club, you want to be competitive and you want a tough challenge so that your success has meaning and is earned, but you also want victories to be an actual possibility where you play.
What’s more, recently relegated teams sometimes get financial aid (called ‘parachute’ or ‘solidarity’ payments) from the F.A. governing body enforcing rules called Financial Fair Play, so there’s even a little incentive there to go down gracefully. Nb. these payment plans are controversial, and not everyone in the game agrees with them as standard protocol.
[quote] Clubs relegated from the EFL Championship receive 11.1% of the Basic Award payment to Championship clubs for one season. Clubs relegated from EFL League One receive 12.6% of the Basic Award payment to League One clubs for one season.
by Anonymous | reply 454 | May 22, 2023 10:59 AM |
Let's be honest, a team that was failing as miserably as Blackpool did this season would have utilised a talented young striker to come on when a goal was needed, but Jake didn't get any playing time in the Championship across.
To be blunt, he isn't a highly rated player, even for a Championship side. That's not an insult, he'll still have a long career ahead of him and score goals and make a decent income, but he's never going to be playing for England.
Not everyone can be a Rooney/Ronaldo/Fabregas/Rashford at the age of 18, Gareth Bale didn't really get going until he was 21/22, in his 4th year at Spurs.
And the hype of being a teenage sensation didn't help Francis Jeffers, Jérémie Aliadière or Jermaine Pennant. David Bentley and Jack Wilshere had relatively short careers.
He could be a Jamie Vardy/Tyrone Mings, someone who realises their potential in their mid 20.
by Anonymous | reply 455 | May 22, 2023 11:13 AM |
R455 yes, that’s a realistic and fair assessment.
It’s said there’s something like a 0.4% chance of a local Brit lad who plays for his school or community team ever making it to the top two leagues in the English game, so for Jake to have come this far at all and to have made it as a full-time pro at any age is an achievement, not least as a gay man in a sport built for and run by straights.
Whether or not he breaks into senior football or scrapes his way back into EFL is another matter, and as R455 rightly points out the game is cruel and full of fierce competition, but also full of opportunity and surprises. There are cases of supposed flops suddenly getting transfers or callups that change their lives, though it’s rare and one can’t rely on that happening. Best to give it your all and be ready once you’re in the door, considering the shelf-life of a footballer is short.
This is a cynical thought, but I wonder if Jake could spin his good PR and raised profile to his advantage, and pull a great escape. It may bring EFL teams who need a bit of goodwill in the press into talks with him. After all, once you’re in the team then you have greater chance to shine or win game time, even if they only put you in for tokenistic reasons at first. Blackpool have been highly supportive of Jake and deserve plaudits for that, but I’m afraid Jake can’t show them too much loyalty, and needs to be a bit ruthless, cold and clever here if he truly wants success at topflight level.

Jake's height is totally unremarkable for the position he plays in.
Central defence and goalkeeper are positions where height is a prerequisite, but then Fabio Cannavaro won a world cup and is only 5'9. And Victor Valdes is "only" 6ft but won 6 La Liga titles and 3 Champions League titles and was an unused player when Spain won the world cup in 2010.

Your father is no doubt enjoying himself, then! And probably even moreso because you're watching with him and spending quality time. It's a game that's bonded fathers & sons (and even fathers & daughters, as I can testify) across a century. The City retention this year has elevated the already-high EPL standard, it's something to behold. We're all fascinated by the working's of Guardiola's mind. And conversely Arsenal's defiant challenge has been dramatic and full of heartbreak. This is football at its finest quality, albeit not its most noble.
As for 'Ted Lasso'...ah, would that I had similar praise. It hasn't done numbers in the U.K. I do envy people who can enjoy it. In the name of positivity, let's just say it certainly has its audience, the actors & writers are perfectly good, and as mainstream feelgood cross-cultural shows go its heart is in the right place, and leave it at that.
Is there really no sports culture whatever in Hong Kong? How strange. One would have thought that at least one of the British sports would have taken hold there, as cricket has in India or rugby has in New Zealand. What do people do for active leisure, there?
[quote] "What you like in a sports team“ I really don't know about that, I basically know no teams, but some of the hot ones of course do. Most welcome, and thrilled to have you along :D Considering you come from abroad, and by the sounds your father or grandfather did not staunchly support any one team in particular, then you've the rare blessing of free choice for yourself when it comes to a personal club of your heart (for many in Britain, club affiliation is inherited and passed down, in families or communities).
For every stat-obsessed weirdo and club stalwart, there's people of taste like us who latch onto the cute sexy players and follow their career ;) It's the superior way to watch imo (or at least, it's less stressful!). That being said, to ally yourself to a club and share in their ups and downs with the rest of the fans is a surprisingly profound experience, so I recommend to do that as well.
And also to take more than one team to your bosom, which is something else you have an opportunity to do as a new foreign fan. A lot of Brits follow their hometown or family club, but also have a kind of secret 'second favourite' they support from a slight remove or without telling their friends & family, either in the English leagues or commonly in a different European, African or even increasingly an Asian one such as the J-League (there aren't many MLS/American mens' soccer fans about, I have to admit). E.g. I follow Liverpool, cheer them on, engage with their content and really admire/lust some of their current players, though I'm not a staunch proper LFC supporter who goes to games or does the most about them. All this to say, you have so many glorious options!
by Anonymous | reply 468 | May 22, 2023 10:05 PM |
'Hot' and interesting players who aren't necessarily the best, though...that is a wide and vague criteria tbf, and difficult to narrow down. I'll only quickly scan the English Premier League and EFL to look for recommendations, as I don't know much about foreign teams & big leagues like Bundesliga or Serie A (anyone else posting here that does, please chime in), and the league that my hometown team play in currently is not a full-time pro tier and also isn't televised often so I doubt you'll care to follow that (though if you do...Hereford F.C. are the best team in Britain and deserve promotion right now :D :D)
So... Prem & EFL squads with the most character and appeal according to me, in the year 2023?
First instinct in my gut says to suggest you to follow Nottingham Forest, probably because they're a cute-looking squad who are rebuilding with a lot of youngsters blooded in, and exceeding all expectations despite their current inexperience and humble ability on paper. They were promoted up to the Premier League last season, and they've done well. Something tells me they've got an interesting future to come and potential off the charts. Plus they have the advantage of a few of my beloved Wales national team players in their squad. Likewise, the Hollywood team of Wrexham, whose story of rags to riches I suspect you may have heard about if you've recently started engaging with football content.
Another club I think you'll vibe with for some reason is the recent arrival to the Prem, Brentford. The Bees as they're known are another wideeyed but determined and upcoming team of adorable and hot lads, not yet jaded by either success or failure, though in just a couple of years they've absolutely gone beyond anyone's predicted milestones in short order. They have a very accepting fanbase that's replete with supporters new to the game. The team finished 9th in this year's final standings, which is very respectable and means they have cup competition opportunities.
In terms of gay fanbase, Brighton & Hove Albion is the typically popular English choice, and the club themselves are aware of this and do an excellent job of accomodating gay fans--one of their recent stadium modifications saw the installation of surveillance to pinpoint the exact seat from which homophobic abuse may be emanating. They're also on the rise, finishing 6th in this year's season against the expectations of almost everyone, so it's a good time to bandwagon them.
Given that you're Gen Z, I want to recommend a team with a young average age with whom you can grow and who you can keep enjoying for a long time to come, because nothing hurts more than latching on to a team that's ageing out or on their last legs so you have to say goodbye to them after only a few years of supporting. This season's EPL teams with the youngest starting XIs (under age 25) have been Southhampton, Arsenal & Leeds; however, next season both Southhampton & Leeds will be playing in EFL (the league below Prem) after a sad relegation. EFL is actually an exciting, pacey and competitive league, often with faster and more physical and more evenly-matched games than EPL where teams sometimes play it too safe and tactically, so if you're attracted to that style of play consider watching EFL instead of Prem for a bit and see what you think.
It goes without saying that Arsenal are an attractive team to start supporting off the back of this last season, and I wouldn't blame or question anyone for doing so. They've got star players, star quality, and a squad of energetic dynamic twunks who want to win. There's probably a massive and long-awaited major trophy in their near future. They're the heroes and the underdogs pitted against the Titan that is Manchester City, and everyone wants the hero underdog to win. That being said, historically Arsenal are what is known as a 'big club' (big on trophies and global success, or big on Ego & mouth, you decide ;)), and most of their fans are lifelong generational stalwarts who get quite scary about their loyalty.

^^
Finally, I want to recommend you take a quick look at Aston Villa. Their current squad have spent the last few years clawing their way into the Prem top 10 and have succeeded wonderfully. Their squad aren't too young or too old, and have some beauties in their stable. What's more, they're from the West Midlands, which in my unbiased opinion is the best place in England ;) But I jest, really it's nice to see a Western British team do so well in the Prem, as usually all the top spots are dominated by Northern or Southern/London sides.
This is just a brief skimming overview, as I don't want to bore anyone with long stories and rundowns. Hopefully it helps, and I wish you lots of entertainment and delight on your way through the Beautiful Game (though beware, if you get in deep, some parts are going to hurt, as well...all part of the authentic emotional experience, of course)

R478 well said and fair, thank you. Nice to have a bit of relaxed and realistic perspective on the subject.
That said, Britain isn’t quite so puritanical about age-gap or gay relationships (remember we gave you George Michael, Queer As Folk, etc.). A lot of Frautrage in this thread comes from Americans. So had Jake wanted to slut it up on Carnaby St. or Queen Street (yes, that’s really the gay district of Blackpool) or the Stanley St. Quarter, no-one at home would have said him nay, I don’t think.

R480 I am not on Grindr, I am too old for that. I am in my early 60’s, and like many men of my age and many of us on here, I spent so much time when younger cruising around in my relentless search for cock. Yes of course I had some great times and a lot of great sex, but I can’t deny that I have regrets. If I had put more effort into trying to actually get along with somebody with a view to having a relationship then maybe I wouldn’t be alone now.
I am fortunate in that I have a good life, good friends and I’m in good health, but a relationship is never going to happen for me. At least this guy is getting the experience of what it’s like to be in a loving relationship and to share his life with somebody, even if it doesn’t last for long.
Hi R478 I am a Brit guy also, and I agree with you.

by Anonymous | reply 482 | May 24, 2023 9:48 AM |
R482 I can only reply to that with what I have learned from meeting and knowing god knows how many people in my 60 odd years. Some people just seem to have a type right out of the gate. I’ve known women when I was much younger who were only attracted to men 40+. Likewise I’ve known even more men who were only attracted to much older guys. Some of these people I knew or still know, very well, and I honestly don’t think that they had daddy issue.
We can’t help what turns us on and gets us hard.
