What happened to 90s/early 2000s chanteuse Dido? No Angel and Life for Rent were mega hit albums, and White Flag was a radio staple. She’s one of the few early 2000s singer-songwriters who I miss. There was something special about her tone. She never overdid it. This is my favorite Dido song; it’s so evocative and haunting:
She was so dull she died of boredom.

I was just thinking about her the other day.
Her greatest hits is my drunk, emotional, walking along the beach at sunset and crying music.
You'd never believe it, but I teach English grammar for a living.

It’s in the kitchen drawer inside my oven mitt.

she became a homemaker and retreated... popping her head out of her den now and again to do a return tour.
her previous work had continued to be sampled and remix, so it's not as if she had to put out another album.
but after her initial catapult, she never quite topped it. . . she got famous at the height of hunger for female singer/songwriters and faded out when the bulk of them did. . . in favor for less adult contemp and more autotuned can't read music pop.

^ when the public returned to a taste for commercial prepackaged fare. . .
so, if anything, you can blame her departure on millennials.

That is a beautiful song OP.

She went to shit and Barbara Mandrell ate her!

She picked up the pace on her last album, and incorporated more of a dance/club feel, while still retaining her signature sound. It’s a brilliant combination. I always thought the “boring” accusation leveled at Dido was unfair. Sophisticated, sure. But boring? No.

Her voice is weak, just like that of Nora Jones. Burned so bright and so fast but fizzled so soon afterward.

Sarah Brightman released rather nice version of Dido’s best song at the same time as Dido, if I remember correctly.

I always find it interesting with musicians how they can be massive and then the public quickly loses interest. Leona Lewis is another one who seemed to have a good career ahead of her after the huge success of Bleeding Love and then her music just flopped.

Is she the one who sang about black horses and cherry trees?

I love her and I still pick up every new album she puts out. I got to meet her at a boarders bookstore when her first album was released. I was 18 and I absolutely loved just about every song on that album and would listen to it beginning to end over and over. Here with me was just so haunting to me too
It especially hit me when I was at a Barnes & Noble browsing around the gay and lesbian books and this beautiful hunk of a high school jock came into the aisle. I moved over to the next style and we kept eying each other but then he eventually left. I saw him drive away and I return to that bookstore just about every day around the same time for the next week hoping that I'd run into him again but I never did. That was the same week that a tornado hit town. Anyway I was listening to hear with me constantly obsessing over the thought of saying that boy and getting to talk to him.

One of her later songs that I really really enjoy is the day before the day. It's a very sad song about somebody pondering what was going through the head of a loved one who had committed suicide. Having had several family members who have attempted or even fake trying to kill themselves it really hits me.

She soundtracked so many schlocky CW shows.

Yes! Dido is so underrated. Safe Trip Home is honestly a moody masterpiece imo. Grafton Street made me sob the first time I heard it and I didn’t even know what it was about. Her whole discography is stellar as fuck. I think her decline of fame just came with changing trends in music unfortunately.

Some people might call Dido's music boring, but she has masterfully perfected something that's really hard to pull off in music: Quiet sadness. It's not overwrought, it's not overly bleak, it's just a comforting, quiet melancholy.

I guess she went down with that ship.

No Angel was a wonderful debut. I love how dreamy it gets in its second half. The production complimented her vocals very well.

Be still my heart. I freaking love her! I'd say she was in the folktronica lane?
A personal story: When I was in college, I was up late studying in the school's café and suddenly "White Flag" came on the radio. I had not heard that song in years, not since my early childhood. It stopped me dead in my tracks. It was so emotional.
She had this specific kind of Y2K sound that embodies the innocence of the pre-9/11 world. It's like a hazy, mystical memory.

She fell asleep during a performance and never woke back up.

Dido’s full legal name is in fact Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O’Malley Armstrong.
Dido, daughter of a French poet and an Irish publisher, previously told how her name was one of the most “irritating” things her parents ever did to her, admitting she was “mortified” by it growing up.
In an interview with The Guardian, she said: "To be called one thing and christened another is actually very confusing and annoying. It's one of the most irritating things that my parents did to me. Florian is a German man's name. That's just mean. To give your child a whole lot of odd names. They were all so embarrassing. I thought it was cruel to call me Dido and then expect me to just deal with it. I actually used to pretend my name was Claire.”
The name "Dido" derives from the legendary Queen of Carthage.

She has been putting out music with Rollo (brother and founding member of Faithless) as R+, contributing vocals on several tracks.
Amelia Fox does vocals on the majority of the tracks.

I met her at a Virgin Megastore right after No Angel came out and she seemed like she seriously couldn’t believe people recognized her. Which was funny to me. She talked to people and signed some autographs. Good shit. Seemed like a super cool person. Her friend/assistant was with her but honestly looked more like a girlfriend or partner? Very butch. That was a fun day.

I challenge you to find a more haunting and beautiful song like this from Dido. It was our song in my relationship. Just beautiful.

She had no personality, her music was bland watered down trip hop for the masses. I couldn't pick her out of a lineup...I don't even remember what she looks like like.

"Thank you" is still a beautiful sounding tune, even though it was her most mainstream radio hit.
It's invocative of the 90s (for me) and transports me back to a simpler and more gentle time of my youth.
Still love it.

The kind of dull pop singing that makes everyone who does it seem the same--polka music and a lot of hip-hop has the same effect.
