Alanis Morissette

Let's discuss...

by Anonymousreply 39November 17, 2023 1:10 PM

She admitted she was so humiliated by the revelation that she had used the term "ironic" completely wrong, that she almost wanted to die. At least she felt shame, which was good.

I liked "You Outta Know" I thought that was quite an original and electrifying record at the time.

After that it all just devolved into navel gazing, therapy speak ,neurotic spoiled white girl crap.

I hated her first album. Hated it. (With the possible exception of that hand in my pocket song. I kinda liked that.)

But I loved her second album. The one no one bought.

Go figure.

Queen

by Anonymousreply 3April 29, 2022 9:01 AM

One of my favourite singers - what's to discuss? I've loved all of her albums, some are more iconic than others for me due to the time in my life they were the soundtrack to. She's a fantastic live performer and seems to be a thoroughly decent, kind human being. Love her.

by Anonymousreply 4April 29, 2022 9:46 AM

Inspired by the recent Liz Phair, were we? I like some Alanis but she’s one of those singers I can only do in small doses. A song here, a song there. Never an album. *shudder* Her voice is too grating for more than a few minutes at a time. That said, my favorite Alanis song is “Hands Clean.” Great video too.

Why were all the 90s women such severe cases of diminishing returns? Massive debut albums, with each successive album losing more and more steam. Alanis, Liz Phair, Sheryl Crow, Jewel. Same old story. It’s like they use up all their talent and creativity in one big burst and then there’s nothing left. I checked out her newest offering (Forks in the Road something or other?) and thought it was awful. She’s purely a nostalgia act, for when I want to be transported back to that era.

She seemed haughty and a little pretentious in the recent documentary about her life. And I thought it was tacky that she denounced it/the director after it was released, considering what a glowing portrayal it was. The director clearly idolized Alanis and she threw her right under the bus.

by Anonymousreply 6April 29, 2022 10:05 AM

She never should've shown her box in that Thank U video.

by Anonymousreply 7April 29, 2022 10:14 AM

I saw this before I became aware of her music so it's always in the back of my mind when I read about her. I love you Mo Collins.

Omg this is genius R8. How did I miss this. The Shakira one was pitch perfect too.

Is she homophobic?

by Anonymousreply 10April 29, 2022 5:33 PM

Brilliant, R8. It's a travesty that MadTV is not available for streaming anywhere, and it's a shame that Mo Collins seems to have virtually retired from show biz.

by Anonymousreply 11April 29, 2022 5:54 PM

Alanis and Madonna are alike

by Anonymousreply 12April 29, 2022 10:37 PM

She has a sense of humor.

Her best album?

by Anonymousreply 14April 30, 2022 3:33 AM

I agree with much of what you said R6.

Exile in Guyville remains one of my all time favorite albums and then everything else Phair did was just underwhelming in comparison. Both artistically and commercially.

However, I think you're wrong about Sheryl Crow. I think her two albums following her breakout album were actually stronger artistically. And both sold really, really well. Not as good as her debut, but not the huge drop-offs of the other artists you listed.

by Anonymousreply 15April 30, 2022 3:44 AM

I always thought she looked dirty and unwashed, especially her hair.

by Anonymousreply 16April 30, 2022 5:40 AM

Until Brtiney Spears came around all of the 90s female artists looked dirty and unbeathed. Looking like lesbians.

by Anonymousreply 17April 30, 2022 5:51 AM

Why bother?

Annoying Morrissey, more like

by Anonymousreply 18April 30, 2022 5:55 AM

R6 I think her issue with the documentary was the insinuations they made about the older guy(s) who abused her in the beginning of her career. She never named who did it, so it was disrespectful and irresponsible of the director to cut to footage of Alanis as a kid next to an older guy whenever she was talking about being abused or encouraged to lose weight, since she never said it was that particular guy who did it and that's basically what we're led to believe. Other than that, it was a good documentary.

by Anonymousreply 19April 30, 2022 6:05 AM

I saw her live last month and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to.

by Anonymousreply 20November 17, 2023 12:32 AM

Jagged little pill was a perfect bridge between the grunge era and what followed. When You Oughta Know first came out and no one knew her, I assumed she was a hard rocking type. They barely even showed her in the video and it was shot like a typical 90s grunge rock vid. It was surprising to hear the rest of the album, which remains one of my all time favs.

by Anonymousreply 21November 17, 2023 12:42 AM

I love her. All of her albums are great. She still is awesome. She released an album during the pandemic, "Reasons I drink" and it was one of the best things to come out of Covid.

by Anonymousreply 22November 17, 2023 12:43 AM

Her material may be good, but I cannot tolerate her voice.

by Anonymousreply 23November 17, 2023 12:46 AM

[quote]I hated her first album. Hated it.

JLP was her third album. Her first album was ALANIS, released in her native Canada during her teen pop days. She was a little bit Janet, a little bit Tiffany and a little bit Debbie Gibson.

And this was a banger…

R1 She should have owned it. It IS ironic that she made a huge song called Ironic that contained no ironies.

Rain on your wedding day is only ironic if you are marrying Al Roker.

🎶Unfortubate coincidence…don’tcha think.🎵

by Anonymousreply 26November 17, 2023 1:06 AM

*Unfortunate

by Anonymousreply 27November 17, 2023 1:06 AM

She left me a $12 tip on a $200 check back when I served her and her party at a restaurant in NY.

I'm usually the first to profess my admiration for Jagged Little Pill, and while I'm woefully unfamiliar with Alanis' later career, I adore that mix of snarling daggers and really playful lyricism. It's a shame Ironic overshadows her better written work.

But did Alanis change popular music? This is a claim I’ve heard repeated frequently as of late - that she was *the* innovator. That's a big charge, and one I'm not sure I'd put solely on her shoulders. I've always thought of her as fitting into a then-growing trend of female alternative singer-songwriters - Tori Amos, Björk, Liz Phair, with Kate Bush as a precursor. And I'm not sure Alanis really had more impact on the musical landscape than any of them.

More 1991 Alanis. They really wanted her to be Paula Abdul.

Yeah, I was in high school during JAGGED LITTLE PILL, which I loved, but I did think she was a continuation of those ladies, only perhaps more successful and about a decade younger.

Alanis was actually the tail-end of all that, because then along came Britney Spears! Now, she changed the musical landscape at the turn of the decade/century/millennium, for better or worse.

The era of the female alternative singer-songwriters was through.

And the Pop Tart Era commenced...

by Anonymousreply 35November 17, 2023 9:06 AM

R11 Mo was on several episodes of Lady Dynamite (Netflix) a few years ago if you missed that

by Anonymousreply 36November 17, 2023 9:21 AM

Most recently, Mo Collins played 'Sarah Rabinowitz' over three seasons of FEAR THE WALKING DEAD, which just ended.

BTW: Mo's Angelina Jolie impression was spot-on and a hoot at around 2:30 in this Whitney/Bobby Brown MADtv sketch.
