Why does he talk so slowly?
He does not do this in his movies...I don't think.

His thinking is already done for him in the movies

Drugs. Plus I think he’s trying to charm/manipulate the jury. God knows why they’re letting him go on and on like they are.

It is so off putting, I dont see how people find it charming. He is probably trying to act like some other old time actor. It is very unnatural.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 25, 2022 5:54 PM |
He’s probably on medication .

If I had to listen to Johnny talk like that 24/7 I would have smacked him too, so I get where Amber is coming from.

I saw him on Jimmy Kimmel once, and the pauses were unbearable between words. He came across as really dense.

He also seems to have a foreign accent. I know Florida is backwoods, but its not a Floridian accent either. WTF.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 25, 2022 6:07 PM |
I switched channels and came back and, he was still enunciating words to the first sentence
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 25, 2022 6:16 PM |
I think it’s a piece of his overall phoniness and pretentiousness.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 25, 2022 6:17 PM |
He also has a weird accent. I looked him up and was surprised he is American, he seems to have mostly lost his American accent somehow.

Pompous windbag but also not very bright
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 25, 2022 6:19 PM |
He's a mellowed out energy vampire
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 25, 2022 6:24 PM |
I would talk slow in court. He’s parsing his words. Obviously trying to figure out what he should or shouldn’t say. Especially in regards to controlled substances. It’s captivating!!!
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 25, 2022 6:36 PM |
He’s drunk and trying not to slur
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 25, 2022 6:37 PM |
The cadence is reasonable to me considering the circumstances. You're warped if you expect him to be Raoul Duke level frenetic.

He sounds so hot when he talks slowly
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 25, 2022 6:46 PM |
They BOTH sound really wasted in the audio clips…
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 25, 2022 7:20 PM |
When he said "What species of meeting?" and "Deviate from our agreement" my eyes almost rolled out of my head.

Well, he's from Kentucky and Florida. He had to do [italic]something![/italic]
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 25, 2022 7:37 PM |
Because in movies he has lines to recite and is playing a character.

R21 Yes, a bit of that coupled with artifice, but he has spent many years living in France, and his French is really remarkable for most Americans without an upper-crust background. It's worthwhile lustening to him. I think he's eccentric and interesting, despite the bad publicity, and the filthy things he's said he'd like to do to her. They're both troubled souls, but she bores me.

^ listening
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 26, 2022 1:39 AM |
He's dumb and trying to sound smart.

(R22) This is R21, I agree with you, and as someone who has read off all Hunter S Thompson's works...it's actually rather laughable hearing him cosplay HST via text etc.

In the 80s, he sounded like a typical young middle American. He mentioned in another interview that he did have a Southern accent before masking it in order to aid his Hollywood career. He also lived abroad for years and probably picked up an accent from there. I bet when he's around his family, the Appalachian twang comes back.

All I can say is that it's not a new thing. I remember watching a promo interview he did for What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and being irriated with how slowly he spoke. The film came out in 1994, right?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 27, 2022 4:18 AM |
He’s just slow in the mind maybe
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 27, 2022 8:23 AM |
I figured he was just doing a riff on Raoul Duke. He probably was very proud of himself after that movie (even though anyone could have been massaged in post to look good in that one).

Johnny Depp talks like Johnny Depp, aware of his surroundings.

He does have to use an in-ear piece with an assistant feeding him lines, according to multiple sources. Just like DL fave Mae West towards the bitter end.

I think he created his own accent. He spent early years in Kentucky but moved to South Florida during his teen years. South Florida was and is not exactly Southern, it has a lot of Northern transplants and Caribbean people as well. During the 80s, he did sound a bit Southern in cadence, obviously trying to mask it. But over time, he adapted this unique sounding accent out of self-consciousness. Madonna is the exact same way, started out with a Detroit accent ended up as British. Ryan Gosling did it as well because he had a Canadian accent but chose for a NYC sounding wise guy accent. Britney Spears in the 2000s was doing this Valley Girl-British hybrid accent too. I used to think Kelsey Grammar was British when I was young but it turned out it was just an affected accent for Frasier to parody pretentious upper-class types.
