Funny how it flew by the censors in 1985, but I don't think it would fly in 2022.
Ilan Mitchell-Smith was only about 15/16 at the time.
And he was standing in front of a fully naked adult male.
What do you think?

A 16 year old wearing panties or being in the same scene as a nude guy would not be censored, at least not in this context of humor.

We need a thinkpiece from Ilan telling us about this transgression and how he is triggered by the sight of panties.

I think it odd. If he had been of legal age and playing 15 or 16, fine but it would still be odd. Being that he was a minor. . .I think it inappropriate. Even back then, as a gay teen, I thought it more uncomfortable than funny.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 17, 2022 2:51 AM |
As a gay teen, I didn't complain. Who tf cares? It was a humorous scene not really meant to be sexy though it was arousing to a gay male audience.

Ilan was cute. He should have been in more movies. I liked him in The Chocolate War.

Aren't the two characters in this scene brothers?
Ilan Mitchell-Smith and Bill Paxton played "Wyatt and Chet Donnelly,".
I would expect most brothers have seen each other naked.
And if all we see is Chet's butt, then I would guess Bill Paxton was wearing some kind of cup.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 17, 2022 3:10 AM |
I think OP needs to understand not all nudity is innately sexual. Male nudity is also often used for comedic affect. If Ilan was ugly, the intent here would not have been even questioned. But since Ilan was good-looking, of course it ended up being arousing to girls and gays.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 17, 2022 3:13 AM |
Ilan was attractive as a young man and remains attractive as a middle aged man.

by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 17, 2022 3:28 AM |
John Hughes was ironically a Republican with an obsession with underage Molly Ringwald. His films had a lot of casual homophobia. Weird Science is weirdly homoerotic though, a lot of male eye candy in here. Though the movie was definitely wish fulfillment for Hughes who was a proto-incel of sorts, neither Molly Ringwald or Kelly LeBrock of high school days would talk to a weirdo like him lol

All of the arts—high and low—are better when we have drunks, addicts, and pervs operating freely. Most films are just awful lately because everyone involved in their production is so fucking careful/afraid to offend.

A lot of directors are just grown up versions of weird, asocial nerds in high school who obsessed over the hot popular girls but never said a word. The gay directors are the same except have an obsession over rough trade or twinks.

All I know is, I'm glad I saw Weird Science at too young of an age. Also, speaking of John Hughes, the guy looked like your vice principal! What self-respecting teen would want to admit to being like his characters?

I mean attitudes towards these things changes with time. My great grandmother married her husband when she was 16 and he was 27, without having to elope. The 80s were really horned up though? At least when it came to commercialization of sex and the male gaze. They had sexy women with drag-like hair and makeup selling cars, beers, and perfume.

John Hughes was clearly a latent homosexual.

I saw this movie when I was pretty young and hadn't realized I was gay. I remember every scene where Ilan Mitchell-Smith wasn't fully dressed gave me slightly confusing tingly feelings. His character--a dorky science guy with floppy hair--turned out to be my type for many years.

by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 17, 2022 12:23 PM |
Kelly LeBrock and the two love interests were just there to make the movie seem more hetero. Remove the female presence and it's homoerotic as hell. Hot nerds getting bullied by hot bullies and tons of skin. Not as homoerotic as The Outsiders and Top Gun but close enough.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 17, 2022 12:55 PM |

Bill Paxton did a lot of nudity throughout his career and was not a shy man IRL, bless him.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | April 17, 2022 1:05 PM |
I remember in the movie TWISTER, the storm chasing crew recalls a time where Paxton's character went out buck naked in the middle of a tornado. It was supposed to be hilarious, but I found it erotic as a teenager first time watching that movie for the reason that R14 stated -- Paxton was too hunky/sexy, so it wasn't funny to me. I remember wishing they had done a flashback.. I really wanted to see Paxton nude! LOL Thankfully, I discovered WEIRD SCIENCE and BOXING HELENA not long afterward.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | April 17, 2022 1:17 PM |
Kelly LeBrock thinks she's great, she's just cold boogers on a paper plate.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 17, 2022 1:19 PM |
I dunno. I think people can be too up in arms over nudity. As a poster said above, it's not inherently sexual. But nowadays everyone is looking for problems in everything they see, so stuff like this stands out more. If I had seen this movie as a kid I would've seen these scenes as comedic, with the feeling that I as a gay kid was getting turned on by Bill Paxton too, but definitely understanding that that was not the intention of it for the majority of the audience.
You just know that if this scene had been the two brothers in the kitchen fully dressed and one grabbed a knife and stabbed the other one that people would have less of a problem with the scene. That's just the way things are viewed, especially somewhere like the US it seems.
But you know, my opinion is really nothing more than just that the theme song by Oingo Boingo is a lot of fun.

Just to add, I do think at the same time that this is pretty accurate:
[quote]A lot of directors are just grown up versions of weird, asocial nerds in high school
Whenever I see movies made about teenage life, they very rarely actually show it accurately. It definitely comes across like someone imagining what life among the "popular" teens at school was like, rather than showing the reality (which is that they are just as boring and dull as everyone else).
by Anonymous | reply 48 | April 17, 2022 1:29 PM |
R48 Bingo! Most teen movies and teen shows felt so far removed from my actual adolescent years. Middle school had the mean wannabe popular kids. But high school, most people were just focused on themselves, had their group of friends and most of the day was mundane and routine. Stuff like John Hughes, Revenge of the Nerds, Saved by the Bell, She's All That, 90210, Disney shows etc was pure fantasy based on some 1950s Archie tropes.
I think the movie Dazed and Confused and that British show Inbetweeners was pretty spot-on for my high school years. Most of the day was boring. Teachers were apathetic. People mostly tries to avoid drama. I looked forward to hanging out at home playing video games or riding my bikes with my friends and getting high. There was an animated show Daria that captured suburban high school far better and accurately than most TV and movies. Malcolm in the Middle was also pretty on point at least being a teen in a dysfunctional family and being socially awkward. The most raw, accurate depiction of middle school would be Welcome to the Dollhouse.
A lot of unpopularity comes from being unskilled in social situations, misunderstanding intentions and as a teenager you over-exaggerate the intensity of situations. Nobody really picks on somebody for being intelligent and not conforming like Hollywood portrays. They'll pick on someone who is self-righteous, awkward and seeks attention. There are popular kids but most of them are usually goodlooking and social overachievers. Many were just nice and goodlooking not nasty nor hostile. Most of the jocks have to actually get good grades to remain their sports team. The bullies were usually the antisocial loner types that nobody really liked or wannabe popular kids. I don't remember any goodlooking kids that were bullies. Plenty of unattractive kids were well liked and popular as well just for being funny and nice.

Ilan Mitchell-Smith was VERY cute to this 13-year-old gayling. His voice was sexy, his body was hot, but he was also nerdy and he was juuuust a little bit fem, so I could imagine that he might be gay himself. All the bedroom and shower scenes with just him and (also cute) Anthony Michael Hall were homoerotic and subtexty as hell. This movie was a closeted gay kid’s dream.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 17, 2022 3:01 PM |
There was definitely homoeroticism between Paxton and Mitchell-Smith's character.
There was always an element of bullying, manipulation, bribery, power, and control in their relationship.
It was always like, "You fucked up, and now you're going to pay. You have to do something for me...."
And I always expected the next line to be, "Now bend over..."

What censors? I'm not aware that there were censors in 1985, or in 2022.
I'm roughly the age group this movie was intended for, maybe a little older, I was in my mid-20s at the time, but it was the type of thing I would have gone to. What is supposed be censorable? That an adult male and a younger male are having a conversation while not even fully nude? Was the older man coming on to the younger man? I don't get how the younger generation always wants to read into everything and find pedophilia or something in situations where that isn't intended. I think your parents (who were notoriously afraid you were going to be abducted, and watched you every second) made you paranoid. Not surprisingly.
By the way, on a different note, that actor (the young one) was somewhat cute, but not dynamic at all, very low energy.

Anthony, Kelly, and Ilan seem to get along very well.
I'd love to see a re-make of this movie, or better yet a reunion.
Instead of teens trying to get laid, it would be two divorced, middle-aged guys trying to get laid.
That would be interesting.

R49 my experience in the '90s was very different. I was a loner and bullied a lot by the popular kids. It was a cross between WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE and NEVER BEEN KISSED. Both main characters' middle/high school experiences. Except I was a gayling in a small town. Not too small, though. My school offered pretty much every sport under the sun. One jock,, in particular, made my life hell until 10th grade (when I transferred) because I dared to look when we were both using side-by-side urinals in seventh grade. That time, he roughed me up in the bathroom, calling me faggot and whatnot. Afterward, he terrorized me more than anything although there was the occasional shove, too.

Ilan is still attractive for a middle-aged man. He pursued a career in education and did something with his post-teen career life unlike other former kid stars who are strung out, begging on GoFundMe and still trying to relive their glory days.

R49, you reminded me too. I just wanted to say, if anyone is interested in a really accurate depiction of high school (from an Australian perspective, but it may translate) then the comedy Summer Heights High is the one to watch. It's almost, as they say nowadays, triggering to see because it is so accurate. At the same time it is an over the top comedy, but is really rooted in a real portrayal of the public school system (and through Ja'mie's attitude, the private school system too).
As you see when you watch this, high school really was all about the completely low-stakes dramas. None of this Euphoria bullshit. It was girls doing a sit in on the oval because they demand a grade 10 formal and then apologising as soon as the teacher shows up. It's "dating" someone for 5 minutes where you only see them at the school gate and then having a breakdown when it's over as he was the love of your life. Because you also see all the kids, with the exception of Lilley, are played by actual high schoolers, it really reminds you how ridiculous some of these shows with 20 year olds doing the outrageous things they do are.
But most importantly, it's a very funny series.
PS, LOVED Daria, really happy you mentioned that one.

Ilan had a cute lil ass on him.

Glad to see he pulled himself back together.

I thought I had dreamt this.
I remember looking him up a few years ago, and he was over weight and kind of dumpy.
Then I googled him recently, and only found photos of him with a normal sized body.
Honestly, I thought I was imagining him being heavy until you mentioned it.
Looks like Ilan had all of those unflattering photos scrubbed from the internet.
So is he trying to get back into acting again? Why would he wipe out all those other photos?

The joke is that he is telling his brother to cover up, and he is uncovering himself at the same time. That's the joke. There's nothing sexual about it. It was just a dumb reason to show off a guy's ass on film. No underage teenagers were molested or inappropriately touched in the making of this film.

I'm a millennial who grew up on all these cheesy 80s, 90s and early 2000s coming-of-age movies that were rerun like crazy on cable. I never saw any of them as close to reality. Just light entertainment. Sometimes with plenty of make eye candy for a young gay. In the case of stuff from the past, it's just a product of its less enlightened time. I cringe now even thinking about what was accepted in the 2000s but that's just society marching on.
I think Gen Z is so uptight and prudish. They need to stop taking pop culture so seriously. Yes, I know millennials and The Xers and Boomers also are pop culture obsessed. But I just get the vibe the Twitter and TikTok "cancel" mob is more prevalent among Zennials and Zoomers who are glued to their social media accounts 24/7.
