POLICE ACADEMY Blue Oyster Bar scene

Never fails to make me laugh. Racist bullies Blanks and Copeland wander into a gay bar, having been sent there by Steve Guttenberg's character. For as terrible as they are, Blanks (the one in yellow), could get it.

The one in yellow has a meat cleaver profile and looks like a pin head.

Ah, the homophobia of the 1980s! We always had to be a joke.

by Anonymousreply 2April 14, 2022 10:00 PM

I'll admit it, I laughed. For the 1980s, this is tame.

by Anonymousreply 3April 14, 2022 10:24 PM

it's hilarious

by Anonymousreply 4April 14, 2022 10:32 PM

8 year old me had absolutely idea at all what this was about.

by Anonymousreply 5April 14, 2022 10:42 PM

Did people get this because of Cruising? The slightly older movie? Or did everyone really just know about the leather scene?

by Anonymousreply 6April 14, 2022 10:44 PM

The leather scene seems to have been a widely employed trope when portraying the gay community back then.

by Anonymousreply 7April 14, 2022 10:58 PM

Brant van Hoffman (Blankes) had a great ass and body, especially for back then.

by Anonymousreply 8April 14, 2022 11:03 PM

Oh lighten up, R2. It's a comedy. Do you have to be so politically correct all the time?

by Anonymousreply 9April 14, 2022 11:05 PM

"The leather scene seems to have been a widely employed trope when portraying the gay community back then."

Now it's boys who want to be girls!

by Anonymousreply 10April 14, 2022 11:11 PM

8 year old me knew I really, really wanted to be in that bar! Even if I couldn't figure out why...

by Anonymousreply 11April 14, 2022 11:14 PM

Agree about von Hoffman's ass. I'd like to have run into him at Southern Decadence or the Folsom St. Fair.

by Anonymousreply 12April 14, 2022 11:21 PM

I always liked the other one more!

by Anonymousreply 13April 15, 2022 1:59 AM

Dopeland?

by Anonymousreply 14April 15, 2022 2:33 AM

Yeah, he was sort of cute.

by Anonymousreply 15April 15, 2022 2:45 AM

Minstrel!

by Anonymousreply 16April 15, 2022 2:47 AM

I commented earlier asking if the movie Cruising was the source of this trope. But I guess everyone learned about the leather scene in 1964 from that Life magazine article.

The song playing when they first walk in the bar is 'The Boys Come To Town' by Earlene Bentley. A Hi-NRG Classic that was HUGE in Gay Clubs in 1983/1984. It still kicks ass.

r10 like Jodie from Soap!

As a kid this gave me all kind of funny feelings.

As for being an offensive stereotype, I think Airplane! and Blazing Saddles were a lot worse.
