Datalounge stories and anecdotes that you've never forgotten
What are some stories and anecdotes from the DL's history that you've never forgotten, because they were so interesting, funny, or just plain weird?
Years ago there was this thread called "Freaks You Work With" - the entire thread was hysterical, but there was this one poster who wrote about some Ren Faire dweeb who'd wear a codpiece to work that still stands out in mind
And there was someone who knew (or claimed to have known) John Barrowman and said he used to post personal ads that would say something like "I have a hungry ass, and it needs feeding!" Now I always think of that every time I read about him

The "this thread has been done before troll" is nothing if not steadfast, thorough and impressively quick off the mark. She does not let 5 responses get through before she states her knowledge of the multiple threads on the same subject and her boundaries in the process. You better think twice if you think you are sneaking one around her.

Red Dragon Cheese! I can't find a link to the thread, it might be memoryholed.
I can't do it justice, but a DLer noticed that a deli had this Welsh cheddar that is rare to find in the states, and wanted to buy two wheels. The deli owner only had three wheels and wouldn't sell, for any price. Things got heated and the deli owner ended the conversation with "I DON'T KNOW YOU"
It was funny.

Years ago somebody told a story about his grandmother’s house when he was a little kid. He would make a big entrance into his grandmother’s living room and she would announce him as Kitty Carlisle. That made me laugh and it has really stuck with me. His grandmother was a good sport.

I loved the salad ghurl thread, at least I think that’s the name it became known by. It was the one with the poor skinny white woman on an airplane in the middle seat sat between two gigantic black people. They were a couple but had booked window and aisle seats hoping for the middle seat to be empty. The woman was eventually turfed of the plane after complaining that she was squashed and that she ate salad. It was a hilarious thread.

The "Move it along, toots" troll.
The backstory from another thread:
[quote]For a long time there was a troll on Datalounge who loved creating these elaborate scenarios that were always about being in midtown Manhattan near Grand Central Station or the Lexington Avenue subway station and involved him getting into some huge fight with a woman of color because he had something incredibly insulting to her in a very stereotypical, sassy way. The first of these to attract much notice was when he said he was in the subway on the platform and wanted a large African-American woman talking to her friend to get into a subway car, so he poked her ass with his umbrella and loudly said, "Move it along, toots!" Then he wrote to us wondering why she was so offended. (That's how these threads always ended: wondering what he had said that had so offended her.)
[quote]He kept repeating these scenarios over and over again, only slightly changing certain elements of them. Somehow they also tended to involve cheap eateries and grocery stores also in midtown Manhattan. Then another troll (perhaps the same one? it was never clear) became obsessed with looking at men's dicks in midtown Manhattan and always referred to it as "looking for noodle." He did this so regularly that he started becoming referred to as "Noodles," and he became identified somehow with the move-it-along-toots troll, so they both were always addressed as Noodles.
[quote]Then the webmaster got sick of people always sighting Noodles and addressing trolls as Noodles, and told us we'd get in trouble if we called anyone Noodles. So the troll became called Momma because he would refer to himself as Momma and tell us someone in midtown Manhattan got his mussy wet.

The lesbian poster who served cheese at her spaghetti dinners to her guests shredded with her already used PedEgg.
Jenna/Libby and her tryst with Russell Crowe during the shooting of "Master and Commander" that resulted in him fathering her child, whom she named Ira. Those threads kept continuing for years. They were incredibly elaborate but always boring.
The datalounger who insisted his lover's sister (Jodi) did not invite him to her wedding along with her brother, and so they decided not to attend. he kept giving us updates of the bride's hysterical reactions to the brother's refusal to attend, including posting on social media 'When do the tears stop?" It was such a successful EST that some DL posters thought they had found who the real Jodi was on the Internet and started harassing her, and the terrified OP of the original thread had to admit it was all an elaborate scenario and beg people to stop harassing this poor innocent woman.
Various reports of legendary batshit crazy DL poster David Ehrenstein being subjected to vicious face slappings in upscale Santa Monica restaurants.
I can't remember if this was here or elsewhere on the Internet, but someone claiming to have sat next to Eve Arden in her declining years at some concert or film, when she ripped a silent-but-deadly old-lady fart. When he turned to look at her in horror , she gave him a lewd wink.

I was just thinking about that one, R109. The guy in the wheelchair became a Datalounge semi-regular, bragging about going to law school and medical school and then into Congress and how he'll prove us all wrong about him.
I get a kick out of news articles that in some way involve Datalounge. There was the DLer who posted a conversation he had with the infamous Cockgobbler, and then Queerty (yes, I know that place is only considered a news site in the loosest of standards) made an article about it.
Then there was Meredith Talusan and her infamous article about how her non-binary friends Alok and Jacob were having so much trouble finding dates or fuck buddies. She descended on the thread and had a long back-and-forth with the rest of us about her stances and opinions on the matter. Christmas came six months early that year.

I remember Price Leatherbarrow. I believe he was in cosmetology school when he described having to wear a helmet while riding a shuttle or some such.
A comment that has stuck with me popped up in a thread posted by a woman who gave a description of herself and her life and asked the DL to psychoanalyze her. One poster responded, "I don't know bitch, just live." It was both hilarious to me and profoundly insightful.
Now, when I'm over thinking/overanalyzing something and torturing myself with questions (I'm neurotic, so this happens all the damn time), those words come back to me, I laugh, and then move on. Thank you, wise DLer, for the laugh and the wisdom.

One of the most awesome and true elaborate scenarios was the guy who chronicled the antics of his delusional co-worker, who pretended to be in a relationship with one of the 90s boy band members. She created a fake Facebook account under the singer's name and would have long, romantic conversations with herself, and would scrape pictures from the FTD website and claim they were snaps of the bouquets he was sending her. He'd keep us updated on their arguments and romantic getaways. I couldn't get enough of it. Of course some A-hole DLer got too wound up and had to track the girl down and troll her, which ruined everyone's fun and shattered the poor girl's happy delusion.
We used to have recurring battles from Wentworth Miller's frauen fanbase, who found their way here from Google and would brigade the threads about him in defense of his undeniable heterosexuality. When poor Wenty finally came clean, the epic schadenfreude on our side was surprisingly not as entertaining as the tears and recriminations from the shattered women, who through some convoluted logic managed to blame us for their heartbreak by claiming we tricked them into thinking he was straight. Pure insanity..
But for my money nothing will ever be funnier than the Michfest threads. I wish our systers could have felt the true affection I believe was behind all our mockery. I think I might miss the Land almost as much as they do.

Lesbian Potluck Wedding Reception. Ft. Lauderdale, mentioned local bars and neighborhoods. Needed people to pay for the reception and wedding so they could have their monthlong camping honeymoon out west (I think). Family drama, attacks for being tacky, etc. One of the few especially silly tales that (some) people actually bought.

These were mentioned in different threads years ago. They mighn't be so memorable, but for some reason I couldn't forget.
- A mother of grown up kids was having sex regularly with her very old neighbor. No one from her family or the neighbors could ever imagine such a thing. The guy who was a respectable and serious grandfather was very kinky in bed.
- A DLer picked up a truck driver and went to a motel. Our guy couldn't believe that that muscular macho looking guy was such a hungry and loud voiced bottom. The driver was counting 1 2 3...with every thrust from our hero.
- When a DLer's mother died and he went to see her body, he said something like: Mum, don't do that, please don't. That was what he used to say to her when he was a kid whenever his mother played dead.

Oh, those were the best. DL posters would cherry pick comments from the Michfest discussions about who needed a ride, squirrels = death, fat womyn on garbage duty, breast casting, etc. and spin these elaborate stories. They were hysterical & I was genuinely sorry when they ended Michfest. It was truly the end of an era in more ways than one

They weren't funny, they were horrifying, but the Pennsylvania shooting in the snow storm threads (I think there were 9 of them) were compelling - partly because it's rare to see a life-ending scenario play out from beginning to end and that sent many of us on a psychological exploration of the scene. I think we tend to live in a bubble of "bad shit only happens to other people" and this brought home how fragile life is. Also, a good reminder not to push hard or bully people around us, because they might just break, go into the house and bring out a gun to shoot us dead.

It was at a time when calling everyone an insatiable bottom in response to anything was in style and the r2 on the thread was “I hear the WTC is an insatiable bottom”.
I read it months after the events and I know that the poster had no idea of the severity of what was happening in real-time. So enough time had passed where I just found it absurdly funny in a sad-but-lets-cheer-ourselves-up kinda way.
