A Secret Between Gentlemen: Has Anyone Read This Book?

It's about a suppressed gay scandal in Edwardian England:

Stretching from England to Australia and Algeria, it details a British Government coverup of a gay scandal involving great names. Hidden for 120 years, it is a history that has never been told, and until recently could not be told.

It is an astonishing tale of vast privilege, and shattered and re-invented lives. Involving at least thirty high-life figures, the ringleader of the group was the M.P., connoisseur and plutocrat, Cyril Flower, Lord Battersea. Considered the most handsome man in Parliament, he was married to heiress Constance de Rothschild. The couple were renowned for their philanthropy.

It seems men have been hiding the sausage since 60,000 B.C.

^ Very true.

Someone should make this into a movie or show. It will be like a gay(er) version of The Gilded Age

by Anonymousreply 11April 15, 2022 5:06 AM

It was n’t necessary for this to a series of three books, I’m sure the story could be told in one book.

by Anonymousreply 12April 15, 2022 7:27 AM

One reason this feels like self-published weirdness. Has anyone read this?

by Anonymousreply 13April 15, 2022 12:08 PM

Lord Battersea was friends with Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas

by Anonymousreply 14April 17, 2022 2:07 AM

by Anonymousreply 15April 17, 2022 2:14 AM

Oh dear, R8, I just received a piece of 1st Period Worcester porcelain from England. Do you thing that's telling?

by Anonymousreply 16April 17, 2022 2:21 AM

Here's another interesting new title. Hopefully it's written in English, and not academic-speak.

I just finished it. Six hundred sixty pages of text, a twenty five page “Envoi” and another hundred plus pages of timeline and footnotes.

And no sex.

by Anonymousreply 18April 27, 2022 2:53 PM

Cyril Flower? Oh i dare say. Do you think his parents knew he was homo before they christened him?

by Anonymousreply 19April 27, 2022 2:54 PM

[quote]And no sex.

So no pages got stuck together then?

by Anonymousreply 20April 27, 2022 3:08 PM

My Sheridan would be appalled!

by Anonymousreply 21April 27, 2022 3:13 PM

Your Sheridan would want more more for curtains.

I’m reading this book on The Women of Rothschild and this story just came up and it’s quite fascinating. Researching more about it and primarily this book is the only thing comes up, but not much else. Even the mention of it in Cyril’s Wikipedia page references this book as it source. Was it some recently declassified materials that brought this to light? Was there other media coverage of it in the UK? Why did this book happen now and why does this book seem to be the only primary source?

So were the only two that went to jail the young navy guys and all the wealthy powerful men got off? Were any of the royal family involved?

Too many words.

600 fat pages. Too much.

I don't have the time. I want cocktails and laughter!
