If you hate the Kennedys the hatchet job done on her I’m the 90s, The Other Mrs Kennedy, is a must read.
The Kennedy family was known to be awful to staff but Ethel was the worst. They went through three chefs in two days in the 70s. She was just full of irrational anger.
The one exception to this was Ena Bernard, who started working for the family in the 50s. Bobby and the children adored her; the kids saw her as a surrogate mom. Ethel despised her and wanted to fire her but her children wouldn’t let her.
Hickory Hill was a pigsty and poorly maintained. The basement was full of expensive rugs destroyed by their numerous pets.
She was put on a tight budget by the Kennedys in the 70s, and stories about her not paying vendors and trying to return clothes she already wore for cash to department stores were common. I believe at one point she was banned from Saks. The local service station ended up filing liens and assuming ownership of a couple of Kennedy cars, including Bobby’s last personal car, when Ethel didn’t pay the bill.
The roof on Hickory Hill rotted out in the seventies , and Ethel apparently didn’t have money to replace it. Jackie stepped up and paid for a new roof when nobody else would.

I like the story of Ethel being in no rush to get to St. Patrick's Cathedral on the morning of Bobby's funeral.
Finally, someone suggested to Ethel that she should begin getting ready, to which she replied, "Do you really think they're going to start without me?".
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 11, 2022 8:51 PM |
I'm not surprised Ethel has lived this long since she was really athletic when young and unlike many of the Kennedys of her generation, she didn't smoke or drink her grief away. The fact that Joan is still chugging along is pretty remarkable though considering all she's been through.

R31 The Skakel family had much more money than the Kennedy. Her father created one of those products that was in “every American home type” of thing. He revolutionized mattresses, which beforehand had been crap for the very poor or obscenely expensive for the very rich. I believe his company eventually became Simmons.

by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 12, 2022 3:16 AM |
"Skakel came up with an idea to purchase the coke from coal companies. In May 1919, Skakel and two partners put up $1,000 and established The Great Lakes Coal & Coke Company. The company would purchase the coke from coal companies and reprocess it into clean carbon which was used to produce aluminum. By 1929, Skakel had become a multi-millionaire. The business eventually grew into The Great Lakes Carbon Corporation, which became one of the largest privately held corporations in the United States. "
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 12, 2022 3:19 AM |
Why did Jackie have to pay for the roof if the Skakels were loaded? Weren’t Ethel’s parents killed in a plane crash or something? Unless they left the breeder no bucks, I guess that would explain Jackie with the roof and the Kennedys keeping her on a budget.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 12, 2022 3:24 AM |
R37, Jackie may have felt sentimental about Hickory Hill, since she and Jack initially owned and later sold it to Bobby and Ethel.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 12, 2022 3:28 AM |
The Skakels were loaded. They owned the land that was developed into Palos Verdes, CA. Her parents were flying there when their plane crashed. The Kennedys tried to finagle the land from the Skakels at a bargain basement price.
Ethel’s brother George Jr. died in plane crash in 1966. A couple of months later, his daughter was driving the Mustang Convertible he gave her as a birthday present, allowing a couple of neighbor kids to ride on top of the back seat and on the convertible top, when one of them fell out of the car to her death.
Six months after that, George It’s wife was eating dinner with her family when she choked on a chicken bone and died.
Ethel was left with substantial stock and trusts after her parents died, but it was tied up in a way that prevented her from accessing any of it. She basically had money problems until the mid 80s, when her fathers company started an Employee Stock Purchase Plan and she was able to unload her stick in the company.
The Kennedy trusts were designed in such a way to keep the widows from getting much money at all, tying most of it up in trusts for the children and grandchildren. Ethel continued to spend money the way she did when Bobby was alive, and would try to keep the bills from going to the Kennedy family.
She had probably been advised to sell Hickory Hill and refused. She also had a very acrimonious relationship with Jean’s husband (and Kennedy money manager) Steve Smith and she would hide bills from him.
When RFK died, the family tried to reduce Jackie’s trust income, as Bobby had authorized additional payments to her while he was alive. That is part of the reason why Jackie married Onassis.

"In July 1941, Hickory Hill became the home of newly appointed United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Robert H. Jackson and his wife, Irene, who, in 1955, after his death, sold Hickory Hill to United States Senator John F. Kennedy (D−Massachusetts) and his wife, Jacqueline. After the 1956 Democratic National Convention, the house was sold to John's brother Robert F. Kennedy and his wife, Ethel, who had a growing family (eventually eleven children). "

The Skakels were NOT wealthier than the Kennedys. Old Joe had multiple streams of steady wealth coming in at all times. By the mid 1950s, his wealth was estimated between 400 and 500 million dollars, while retaining sole ownership of the jewel in his financial crown - Chicago's Merchandise Mart, which his heirs sold some 25 years ago for 625 million. The Kennedy's are still secretly very wealthy. Trust, baby. Trusts. Kennedy money always stays in trust providing income.

She as a terrible person. She was interested in politics from an early age and worked for JFK for one of his early Senate races, and wanted to marry him but he did not consider her pretty enough. but she was a Catholic and came from a family even richer than the kennedys, so she had to marry one of the brothers, so they passed her off to Bobby.
She was infamously envious and insecure and mean, and she got in good with her new sisters in law by leading them in mocking Jackie behind her back. She was he one who came up with the rhyme "Jack-LEEN! Rhymes with QUEEN!" which they all used to mock jackie, and she was also the one who pointed out that Jackie always ran water when she used the bathrooms at the main house at the Hyannisport compound so no one could hear her noises.
She was also a complete social climber and a terrible mother. She could never get enough love, so in addition to the 11 children she also kept a menagerie at Hickory hill, as others have pointed out, and let the animals go to the bathroom everywhere which was disgusting. She spent as little time with the children as possible, and as a result they pretty much ran wild.

I worked in Washington for a few years and got the chance to visit Hickory Hill once for a fundraiser.
It was literally a rundown dump, no kidding. My frat house after a party. was cleaner and more impressive than Ethel's house.
Ethel horrendous behavior was an open secret in DC. She eventually alienated everyone except the priests and the nuns she befriended and for whom she maintained her pious facade.
Both of Ethel's parents were alcoholics as were most of her siblings...she grew up wealthy but in utter chaos with no ability to form meaning attachments to people.
With Ethel it was all just a big competition for status and power...and she was too thick to understand why people avoided her after she lost most of her power and status...then she just became more angry and bitter.
When she would invite others to come and play tennis, her assistant would always have to pull the guests aside and let them know it would be very unpleasant if Mrs. Kennedy didn't win every match.

Ethel didn't really hate Jackie so much as resented the attention Jackie got for being beautiful and for being a fashion icon.
Ethel didn't really care about fashion but she could never stop competing for attention...
so Ethel would actually buy multiple designer gowns for an event and change midway during the party in a misguided attempt to make others envious of her.

Rose and Joe’s granddaughters turned out well for the most part. Kara and Kerry both had addiction problems but they seemed to have worked on them and put them behind them.
The grandsons-in particular RFK’s sons, William Smith, and Chris Lawford- didn’t fare as well, although Chris did work on his addictions and was in a good place the last 20 years of his life.
Ted’s son Patrick is bipolar and an alcoholic. Joan left Ted in the mid 70s and moved on her own to an apartment in Boston, when Patrick was young, so that didn’t help.
JFK Jr, the Shriver sons and Ted’s eldest son turned out good.
Pat was an alcoholic. She took off for Paris after her father died with her daughters and left Chris behind, and he got into trouble as a result.
Finally, is Jean’s creepy eldest son Stephen Jr. gay? He never married, always escorted her to events, and looks like he went to the same plastic surgeon as Joan Kennedy.

Back in the day, I can picture Ethel's house looking beautiful from the outside, but smelling of animal piss once you got inside. There were horror stories about Ethel for years by high end department store employees, but I also remember similar stories about Eunice, though not as extreme.
Years ago, someone on another Kennedy thread claimed that the lived or worked in the Watergate (can't remember which) and Stephen Smith was an epic weirdo who stole the sugar packets off the table. Supposedly creepy Willie lives somewhere around the DC area, but he keeps a low profile, which is probably for the best. I don't think he ever had kids.

Or the borderline personality disorder mind of a woman who grew up in a family so devasted by alcoholism that she's constantly trying to guess at what "normal" should be...
During her childhood, one of Ethel's brothers favorite pranks was to drive a car into the family swimming pool.
She longed for what she saw as the relative stability of the Kennedy family. As those who know her say, "She was always trying to out-Kennedy the Kennedy."
And then there was the perfect storm where the Catholic church pressured this woman who is unable to even recognize the needs of others to have 11 children.

Early in Robert and Ethel's marriage, Joe and Rose Kennedy would reportedly be summoned to Ethel's household periodically to try stop her hemorrhaging of money and to try to address the other emergencies.
Rose was said to be outraged once when she found an expensive antique French ormolu clock in the maid's room that Ethel had given to the maid to use an alarm clock.
Rose who had had her own inadequacies as a mother would scold Ethel, "You can buy a good sturdy electric alarm clock for less than $6."
Ethel would also buy outrageously expensive and impractical items for herself and Boddy while leaving her children in the care of by whatever itinerate help Ethel could hire. As noted above, Ethel was so difficult that the staff turnover was constant.
Ethel once bought Bobby a museum-quality Etruscan vase for an anniversary that was broken by the children before she had a chance to give it to Bobby.
Ethel once had the basement of Hickory Hill fitted with a lavish and impractical sauna as a gift to Bobby, but forgot to even mention the gift to Bobby, who discovered it weeks later. The sauna had to be removed at an equally outrageous costs, because of the danger to their frequently unsupervised young children.

R18, thanks for mentioning "The Other Mrs. Kennedy". I found a copy at my local library.
Yowsa.
Very dishy. I didn't start at the beginning, but after Bobby died. Funny, the library book opened to those sections.
According to this book, EK was a nightmare to work for. Lots of stories. With lots of witnesses to her behavior.
For example, refusing to pay cab drivers who brought her home, claiming they were cheating her. Even so far as to slap one cab driver who was explaining he was responsible to his employer for the charges and she didn't have to tip him. She yelled and just went into the house. One of the employees who witnessed this, paid the cabbie herself and told EK (after she calmed down) and EK was angry that she paid. And never reimbursed her. And commented that EK would pick on people of a lower social scale, perhaps because they could not fight back.
And that pattern of big spending and then returning stuff to the stores. Amazing the number of stores that let her get away with it. Although she was banned from other stories.
And some much uglier behavior too.
I'm just now at the parts where she's attaching herself to other men. (The Kennedys were hoping she get married again, although those close to her never believed she would.) Andy Williams was one possible, with comments from AW's former wife Claudine. Frank Gifford was another. Also David Brinkley.
Very, very dishy.

The best looking Kennedy grandsons are JFK Jr and the Shriver boys.

Max Kennedy is a nice person, or at least was when I went to college with him in the mid1980s. He seemed almost as if he were trying to make sure he did not fit the image at the time of RFK's sons as wildly entitled--he was very affable.
I also went to college with Amanda Kennedy Smith, his cousin, who was much more aloof.

Amanda isn't Asian R135. You're thinking of her younger sister Kym. Both of them were adopted by Stephen and Jean Kennedy Smith when they were babies and are every bit a Kennedy as their relatives since that's the family that raised them.

She was always pretty bitchy towards Jackie because she was competitive with her. Her competitiveness meant that she fit right in with the other Kennedys, whereas Jackie (for all her many other faults) was not competitive in that way.
Ethel would make fun of the way Jackie would pronounce her name--"Zhack-LEEN! Rhymes with QUEEN!"--and would gather the other Kennedy women outside the bathroom door of Joe and Rose's house when Jackie was in it to make fun of the fact Jackie would run the faucet while she was using the toilet so as to hide embarrassing sounds.

She was competitive with her mother-in-law and took pride in the fact that she'd had more children (eleven to Rose's nine). She's probably hoping to break Rose's record and live to one hundred and five.

The Other Mrs Kennedy is a great read if you dislike this old battle axe. Hickory Hill was a pigsty-the Shah of Iran gifted Bobby and Ethel Persian rugs. They allowed their menagerie of animals to defecate all over them.
My favorite story in that book is when Ethel “bought” a dress from Saks i for an event, and was photographed in the dress. The saleswoman clipped the picture of her in the dress from the paper.
The next day, one of Ethel’s lackeys showed up with the dress and tried to return it for cash even though it was stained. The lackey was told by the saleswoman that Saks wouldn’t take it back, and then the lackey made a scene (probably because Ethel would have lost her shit if the lackey came back to the house without cash).
Annoyed, the saleswoman wrote a note for the lackey to give to Ethel, with the newspaper photo of Ethel in the dress affixed to the note. She wrote something to the effect of , “I am sorry Mrs. Kennedy , but the dress has been worn and is stained, and Saks isn’t a consignment shop.” Ethel didn’t show her face in Saks for a year.

If Ethel took a taxi home to Hickory Hill, she would try to stiff the driver for the fare by telling him he should be honored to have driven Mrs. RFK and not charge her.
