I've been in love with Phoebe Nicholls ever since her amazing, charming performance as Cordelia Flyte in "Brideshead Revisited" (1981). She's also wonderful in "Maurice" and "Persuasion" as well as many other period roles. I've seen her in some modern roles and also sought out her childhood performances. I haven't been able to see a lot of her British TV roles, but wish I could. Has anyone ever met her or heard anything about her personal life? She's someone I wish I could meet.

Is it true she did 'a Jennifer Jones'?

[quote] her snatch
An ugly word.
But her husband must have been prettier than her.

R3 But did marrying Mr Sturridge help her career like Selznick did to the lame Jennifer Jones, R2?

I went to IMDB and it seems she started as one of Peter Finch's brood who sent Anne Bancroft mad.

She seems to get lots of supporting roles playing unresolved, unattractive, unhappy women.

"Nicholls" is the less-common spelling of Nichols.
I realised today that the child shown briefly in those scenes with Maggie Smith in that clip at R7 must be related that old stalwart named Anthony Nicholls who played in so many dreary military movies but had the luck to star on stage opposite Maggie Smith.

She has, indeed, had a niche career playing unhappy or alternatively butch wives and mothers. You can catch her in any number of shows like Endeavour and Inspecctor Lewis and Second Sight.
She's had a minor career. She just wasn't pretty enough to get ahead on sheer talent. She's no Maggie Smith or Glenda Jackson. Good but no charisma rockstar power.
Young Tom, though, was quite good in The Hollow Crown as the doomed Henry VIi.

^* bitchy (not butch) wives and mothers
Cordelia was unfortunately the pinnacle of her career.
