Which languages have the most beautiful scripts?

I nominate Sinhala:

Georgian is also lovely:

Traditional Chinese may lack the appeal of some of the others, but its complexity still amazes:

I agree with R3 & R8. Arabic, Chinese, & Japanese as most visually elegant. In high school Japanese class, we learned Hirigana, & Katakana of course, but also learned upward of fifty kanji in one year. Naturally, there's a difference between written kanji, & kanji in written in calligraphy form.

Anyway, there are others that are more interesting to view. Like Burmese, for instance. And I looked into Native American languages, but they're not as interesting visually, as I thought they would be when hearing them spoken.

While studying India, I learned to tell Telugu and Tamil written script apart, because Telugu looks like a bunch of animals/rabbits and Tamil has 600/6001 repeated in it all the time.

Tell me that a bunch of you also looked at the beginning of the Gideon Bibles in hotel rooms, where they had some scripture listed in dozens of different scripts. I remember one that just looked like all circles.

by Anonymousreply 25April 2, 2022 12:16 AM

R25, you could be reading my mind. Tamil and Sinhalese were always the ones that blew me away.

This thread is persuading me that we should all make a group effort to drop the Roman alphabet and pick up one or more of these to write English. The Roman alphabet is so clunky (though not as much as Cyrillic).

R38, I can write a bit of Sütterlin. My 95-year-old grandmother urged me and my sister to learn it so we could sent her birthday wishes etc. in Sütterlin. I find "normal" German extremely ugly (both in written and spoken form), but I agree that Sütterlin looks kinda cool. It's funny that most letters are very similar or almost identical to the modern-day Latin alphabet, but it's still quite hard to decipher (probably because some of the most common letters like /e/ and /s/ look very different).

French cursive is gorgeous. I couldn't find anything about their printing though but their cursive is to die for. No idea as to if it's still taught.

R38 I know what Sutterlin is because Maria Riva wrote in her biography about her mother, Marlene Dietrich, that Marlene had tutors teach her Sutterlin for whatever reason. Apparently Maria really hated learning it because she felt it would serve her poorly if she one day actually got to formally attend school because it was deemed rather old fashioned by then. I'm just this gay.

Look how the curly, embracing round accepting circular shapes are loved and the straight, uptight, sharp talon's claw are regarded as ugly.

I would guess it's reflection of the culture. Warm fuzzy cultures are more circular, and strict ones like the Germanic ones are rigid and uptight.

I think Arabic hits some rule of thirds. Like diagonals and not too much either way that's it's elegant mix of both.

by Anonymousreply 73April 3, 2022 4:08 AM

R73 We're only looking at one typeface here, remember. Look at how English sends a different message depending on whether you're using Comic Sans or Copperplate Gothic.

by Anonymousreply 75April 3, 2022 4:31 AM

r75 Chinese schoolchildren learn characters all through elementary school. They pick up more obscure or archaic characters into high school and college. If I am not mistaken, a typical college-educated Chinese person knows anywhere from 6,000-8,000 characters.

I think for basic literacy -- enough to make out a newspaper article -- familiarity with around 2,000 characters is necessary.

A lot of you are confusing the names of languages with the names of the scripts they use. Like Persians and Arabic use pretty much the same script and there is no script called Nepali. That is one of several languages that use Devanagari scripts.

Most scripts fall into one of several writing systems, like Latin, Arabic, Kanji, Brahmic etc. Several posted upthread are very similar and can be legible as adjacent scripts within the same family. Some like Korean and emoji 🙂 are just made up shit of recent vintage.

How attractive a script is depends on the fonts you see. But all scripts have to be recognized today in Unicode for use across computer platforms. Unicode will then also recognise the various fonts designed for a script. Latin scripts like English have many fonts, some like Helvetica are beautiful and popular and have films made about them. Others like Bitch Bold, the font used by Datalounge, are loud, nasty, and ugly.

Font styles come out of calligraphy. Cultures with strong manuscript traditions have developed arts of calligraphy. In the case of Islamic cultures, religious strictures upon representational art have resulted in elaborate and ornate art compositions using scripts.

r87, you claimed in r85 that "Korean hanggul [sic] has been in use for only about a hundred years."

That is demonstrably false. If you meant WIDESPREAD or STANDARD use, you should have said that. But it's been used for hundreds of years.

I'd hardly call the fifteenth century "recent vintage."

by Anonymousreply 88April 3, 2022 8:08 PM

Darling, you're making me work! Korea was a part of Chinese civilization. That's why they used kanji and not the script some random guy made up for nationalist reasons. Actually emoji 🙂 show more evolution though it is slightly younger than Korean hanggul.

by Anonymousreply 89April 3, 2022 8:15 PM

Well, hangul might not be as old as hieroglyphs or cuneiform, but it's obviously not "slightly older" than emojis, and you don't date the origins of a script to the time since it's been in "primary use" for a language. How about Cherokee? Are we supposed to believe that that's some kind of recent invention, when it's been around for generations?

R89 must be an extreme eldergay of the generation of Cadmus, as well as having some sort of anti-Korean bias (bad batch of kimchi?).

by Anonymousreply 90April 3, 2022 8:39 PM

Is that Cherokee? Tribes are usual oral only ;) and don't have scripts of their own. When they do have them, its made up shit too, but, like hanggul, commendable - though this one is not as well designed.

Somehow its a badge of honor to have your own script but here's the interesting thing r90 Tribes today do not need writing systems with the proliferation of digitality. Why, we've even gone back to pictographic 😂

No i don't hate koreans. But my Cherokee was a surprisingly limp hookup.

The chinese alphabet seems terribly inefficient. A new sign for every concept, instead of a small set of letters that can be combined endlessly.

by Anonymousreply 92April 4, 2022 5:37 AM

It's not an alphabet. Characters represent words and concepts. But the characters are built using a couple hundred standard components, so they aren't as different as they might seem at first.

by Anonymousreply 93April 4, 2022 5:43 AM

Have you seen how Chinese characters are typed on a computer,? Good lord. Its complicated. Its predictive strokes all the way. No language and script will replace English Roman for the foreseeable future.

by Anonymousreply 94April 4, 2022 10:10 AM

R94 No, it's not difficult at all, even for non-native speakers. Suggest you watch some Chinese kids smashing away on their phones.

by Anonymousreply 95April 4, 2022 10:15 AM

R95 it depends on which type of typing method you choose. For simplified Chinese, the prevailing type method would be Pinyin, which is simply type the phonetic of the words. For trading Chinese, the prevailing typing method is 倉頡,which require you to dissect a character into different parts and type the corresponding letters to each part in the order that the characters are written. For example, the word 吉 has a 士 at the top and 口 at the bottom. When writing a character, a person write the upper part and then the lower part. The upper part 士 corresponds with the letter 土 and the lower part corresponds with the letter 口. So to type the words 吉,you type 土口.

by Anonymousreply 96April 4, 2022 10:37 AM

R96 No, whether it's fast or not does not depend on the input system. Native speakers tend to prefer shape-based systems like Wubi or Cangjie, non-natives Pinyin entry. But with just a bit of practice anyone with good Chinese can be messaging away just as quickly in Chinese as someone typing English. This is not really debatable.

by Anonymousreply 97April 4, 2022 10:54 AM

Yeah, it is. Chinese is ridiculous and inefficient and incredibly cumbersome to try and type or even write. It really should just be abolished. At least the Japanese introduced a phonetic alphabet.

Fun fact: all the remaining nudie video stores (the ones with peep booths) in NYC are owned and run by Sri Lankan Sinhalese people.

They’re the ethnic majority in Sri Lanka, but have a chip on their shoulders because they know they’re inferior to the Tamil minority in their country. No Tamil would EVER open a dirty video store; they become physicians and engineers instead.

R92, Chinese is complex, but it is a VERY efficient way of communicating non-verbally among speakers of different languages, because everything is written in the same fashion and every ideogram reflects a concept - thus, people who would otherwise be unable to understand each other can easily communicate in writing.

If it weren't an efficient and effective way of communicating, it would have simply disappeared and been substituted by something more practical. However, the fact that it has lasted millennia would suggest that it is, in fact, an extremely effective alphabet.

by Anonymousreply 119March 29, 2024 1:16 AM

r98, the Japanese only use their phonetic scripts to write certain words - the hiragana for native Japanese words, and katakana for foreign (non-Japanese and non-Chinese) words. You still have to learn the kanji characters in order to read the Japanese language, which is why Japanese is regarded as having the most difficult writing system (2 alphabetic syllabaries and 1 ideographic script) in current use.

Fun fact - There was an effort during the American occupation of Japan to replace Japan's writing system with the Latin alphabet as part of an effort to break with the past. It thankfully didn't come to anything, although it would at least have been theoretically possible, unlike Chinese where the number of identical syllables (even taking tones into consideration) would have been a complete mess.

I've noticed no one has brought up the Maya script yet, which some historians say is the most beautiful script ever devised by man.

The characters (or logograms) look so cute and cartoon-like that early explorers and researchers thought they must function like Egyptian hieroglyphs. But no, it's a proper writing system, as expressive as any alphabet we have today.
