[quote]Comedian Sinbad has two bankruptcies under his belt. The first, in 2009, happened from a huge expense obligation of more than $2.5 million. In 2013, Sinbad sought financial protection because of the costs of doing business, all in the expectation that he would land a rewarding film job that would top off his coffers. At the hour of his subsequent liquidation, Sinbad was apparently in the red for $10 million, $8 million of which came about because of neglected assessments from 1998-2006.

No actor from a 1970s sitcom still gets residual payments. Too bad the nightclub circuit no longer exists, so no talent old sitcom actors and everyone else could put together some kind of 30 minute act and get paid for performing.

A lot of people don't get lucky enough to land in TV money for 14 seasons. And some who do, end up taking bad advice from people who don't have their best interests in mind. I remember an interview with Butch Patrick on Howard Stern years ago. All he does is go to conventions and take pictures and sign autographs and he has a nice life.

Maryann from Gilligan's Island who had to have a GoFundMe to pay her way into some assisted living facility a couple of years ago. This despite her being the only cast member who received residuals from GI and despite the Mrs. Howell actress leaving her money in her Will. I believe I read about the residuals here on DL. Her husband was an agent at the time and he negotiated that at a time when it wasn't common and GI wasn't expected to be any kind of a hit.

Those convention appearances can be really lucrative, especially if you were in some sort of a big horror or sci-fi series. There are people who were only known for being in one Nightmare on Elm Street sequel or a few episodes of Star Trek who go to dozens of cons every year and come back with a huge stack of cash. I'd assume that keeps a lot of them going. Many of them might not even be actors anymore, but it's still not a bad payday.
I've known people who have worked with some big horror/sci-fi stars and some of them are only getting somewhere between 5 to 10 thousand a day to do these low budget movies and many of them don't take long to shoot, so they really have to accept a lot of crappy scripts to keep the lights on. They'll take a 3 day role here and a 2 day role there in between a ton of 1 day cameos where they film all their scenes from behind a desk or while talking on the phone. Their names can be used to increase marketability in these genres. I'd like to know just how much these kinds of actors make without any of the convention money. It can't be enough to live comfortably on their own unless their spouse is loaded or has a nice job.

I've seen some of the value of these autographed posters rise to insane amounts after one of the people who signed it dies. I'm sure some of those collectors could make a pretty penny on eBay if they wait to sell some of their stuff after a few of the people have croaked.

The conventions with the paid autographs, I think those are a good thing. Stars who need the money get to make some money. The transaction is very clear. You pay me $___ for an autograph and a brief personal exchange. If the fan thinks it's too expensive, they can pass on it.

Yeah, that was kind of weird; it used to be that big name celebs did commercials in Asia for big $$, but would never do something like that in the US because it would hurt their career. Not anymore apparently. But Brad's got legal bills to pay, so maybe he needs the extra $$.

After Carrie Fisher's moneyman stole everything, her primary source of income was the fan conventions. She called it "the Celebrity Lap Dance", and said she'd occasionally startle some sales woman by saying "Opps, gotta go, I've got a lap dance at four".
She wrote some fairly kind things about the fans in "The Princess Diarist", quoted some of the regular people she'd met while giving autographs, but then, she wanted the Star Wars fans to buy that book. I can bet she was bitchy about them elsewhere.

Part of the appeal of paying big money for the autograph is that you get to interact with your favorite stars, shake their hands, talk to them, tell them how much they mean to your childhood. The private signings mean no interaction at all. Why would you pay for that?

And then the publicist's intern signs the celebrity's name to them.
The old professional autograph hounds, the kind that would sell autographs for big bucks, would always have a picture taken with the celebrity whose autograph they'd collected, as proof that the autograph actually came from a celebrity and wasn't something they'd written themselves.

Sally Kellerman (prior to her death, obviously)
I used to work at the Trader Joe's where Sally shopped on a weekly basis. I can't tell you the number times her debit/credit cards were declined, and/or she didn't have enough cash to pay for her groceries. And we'd have to go through this sad, little exercise with her -- picking out the "lower-priority" items, and voiding them, to get her total under a certain amount. (either to run the card again, or use whatever cash she had on her). It didn't happen *every* visit, but frequently enough that she developed a reputation among the employees for it. And there were a number of occasions where she simply left empty-handed because she didn't have any cash, and her card wouldn't go through after removing numerous items.
It was sad, especially because she was SO sweet and friendly. We all liked her! She was always very apologetic & seemingly embarrassed...but ya' know, it was a drag/hassle. Particularly when the store was very busy. You could just feel the hostility radiating off the people in line behind her.

I googled those after your post R335.
There have been a few posters I've seen over the years who said she was an absolute professional (almost to the point of being stand-offish). She showed up, lines memorized, did her thing, and then went home. No after parties, no drama.
So it wouldn't surprise me if she saved every dime she made. Still though, those same sites said at her peak she made around $5M a year from Buffy. So average that to $2.5 over 7 years, then take away at least half for taxes, agent/managers cut, etc.
That is maybe $9M over 7 years (but of course she worked on other projects). Living in L.A., that couldn't have gone too far.
I like her so I hope she is doing well.

Yeah sci-fi is kind of a trap R344.
Yes there are actors that break out of it (Shatner), but most do not (99% of TOS, TNG, Voyager, Enterprise, Picard, Discovery, B5, Xena, Hercules, X-Files, BG, etc.)
I would hope most actors realize these days that even though the show the may be a major hit, the jobs probably won't keep coming.
by Anonymous | reply 347 | April 16, 2022 12:13 AM |
I don't think sci-fi is a trap if the actor has actual talent. The trouble is that you rarely get an actor of high caliber in sci-fi, and if you do, they can go on to do other things (like Chris Pine and Patrick Stewart did). There are very few first rate actors on the ST shows who I thought did not get to get better work afterwards: Leonard Nimoy (though he made a fortune from the ST movies, and found a well-paying career as a director), Michael Dorn, and jeri Ryan are the only ones who I can think of who deserved better work than they got afterwards.
As for X-Files: both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson went on to fabulous careers, as she deserved and he did not.

Sci-fi and horror stars at least have the convention circuit which can pay more than a few days on some indie film set. My heart really bleeds for the ones who don't even have the sci-fi/horror red to do those.

[quote]Yeah sci-fi is kind of a trap [R344]
Lucky for her she really loves the conventions and loved the cast (and when I say hit I mean the BIGGEST sci-fi (really horror) show on TV. With zombies.)
She’s bounced back since the pandemic and has worked with academy award winning actors and directors and is very, very lucky. But it’s a hard life if you’re not A-list but still super successful. She loves it, but I’d be too nervous living the way she does. Her husband has a full-time job and they have a family and nice, modest house in our hometown, far from LA. But they do depend on her salary, so when she’s not working, it’s hustling.

You mean pensions, R337? Well, sure they do, and Social Security checks, too. But depending upon the amount of those checks, and their other financial obligations, they could still be living "check-to-check".
P.S. Sally Kellerman: I have no idea whether she was really broke, or merely absentminded about making sure there was always enough money in her in her primary checking/debit card account. She was a little scatterbrained. Also: this wasn't during her "sad, last days". This was roughly 2010-2015, when she was still *working* from time-to-time.

R384 & R385, the memories this site triggers. Rosie Grier appeared in the "Airport" rip off "Hijacked", with DL fave James Brolin. Rosie played a musician who travelled with his upright bass (I could be wrong about the type of instrument but it was stringed and I'm not looking it up) next to him in First Class, in a separately paid seat. The instrument's name was 'Baby'.
Brolin played the hijacker. As Brolin's character was led off by the authorities he began to sing, "Nevah Will I Marry'. That is only available in the director's cut wh. is now locked in Muriel's office.

[quote][R370] Would Shelley be able to afford health insurance?
[quote](I'm not American so I don't know how that works but being at the mercy of public hospitals in any country would be awful.
She’d be old enough to have Medicare, which if you’re unfamiliar with, is government sponsored insurance that you’ve paid into over the years for people over 65 (and some younger people with kidney disease). Like most health insurance here, it’s still kinda a mess.
Now, surprisingly, public and private hospitals aren’t THAT different because hospital regulation is fairly strict about services and quality, and many public hospitals can be affiliated with state University Medical schools and are these sprawling campuses with brand new state of the art facilities. I go to a hospital system that includes primary care that’s considered a safety net hospital (so basically the lowest rung of public hospitals that are there for indigent patients) and even they just built a new outpatient medical center and it’s FANCY! I go there because I used to work there and it’s close, but it’s not bad at all.
But a lot more lower income people get their primary care at community health centers, which can run the gamut from new and beautiful to decrepit and depressing. But again, regulated for services and quality. In fact, sometimes the worst clinics are small private practices because they get little or no fed or state funding for infrastructure (picture a Drs. office in a run down apartment building or strip mall).
All basically saying our whole health care system is messed up and backwards. But Shelley is probably ok and would get good care of she needed to go to the hospital.
This could be its own thread.
by Anonymous | reply 405 | April 25, 2022 2:45 PM |

There was gossip years ago that Kristy McNichol was able to retire from acting and do other things because of rental properties that she bought in her early 20s.

r442 the fact that it was affordable enough for her to buy could be a good or bad sign. I'm sure she didn't put up much of her own money, in a Musk Twitter buy-out situation.

[quote]Louise Lasser is heir to her father's publishing fortune. JK Lasser was the king of self help tax guides and the phenomenally successful "How to Avoid Probate." She made a substantial sum on her own, inherited more, and got excellent financial advice along the way. She is not living paycheck to paycheck. Not sure about her mental status, but financially she is fine.
In the 80's she was an acting teacher. Her office was in the offices of Carnegie Hall. My friend studied with her and I met her and she was genuinely one of the funniest people I ever met and she wasn't "on", just naturally. I have zero Idea but I always wondered if she got alimony from Woody Allen since that's what was done at the time, and they have remained friends and she never remarried.

Darryl Hannah out there hustling. LOL. She always tried to pretend that she was so uppercrust. I guess she was just low down for cash like a lot of hoes in Hollywood.

Going by some of the lame jobs Connor Jessup has taken on lately, I'd say he's desperate for the cash.

R. 457: no, she just held his cock in her mouth until he succumbed . Lol. He is trash. Carrie Snodgrass was involved with him. At the time, she was nominated for best actress for Diary of a Mad Housewife. Lucky break for an unknown .
I read that hippie dippy Neil convinced her to not attend the awards ( again, who knows ). After her no show, she was shunned by Hollywood
Maybe someone could shed more light ?

R459 What jobs? Connor hasn’t worked on anything as an actor after Locke & Key to my knowledge. He spoke about focusing on writing his first feature film

didn't Neil Young father a child with Carrie Snodgress? And wasn't the child a special needs and all but abandoned by Neil while Carrie basically took care of the child.

Kudos to Connor. It takes real talent to write a screenplay while simultaneously taking endless loads up the ass.
