Zendaya Vents About The Cultural Appropriation Of Braids

Jada part 2. Never forget.

by Anonymousreply 48March 29, 2022 2:17 PM

This is incredibly ignorant. Viking, Celtic and Teutonic cultures had women wearing braids. There are also “French Braids.” I’ve seen portraits of Italian country girls from the 19th century wearing braids. Braids are worn by women in Peru and I am sure Asian cultures have their braids or versions of braids.

by Anonymousreply 1March 29, 2022 1:00 AM

Zendaya needs to shut the fuck up.

Especially white half of her stupid fucking mouth.

by Anonymousreply 2March 29, 2022 1:04 AM

“it's incredibly important to be aware of the impact that cultural appropriation can have and that passive tolerance of it can be just as bad as appropriating another culture yourself.”

yeah? go fuck yourself millennial Nylon editor retard. jesus fucking christ i’m so sick of all this shit!

by Anonymousreply 3March 29, 2022 1:25 AM

Why do obviously people who are not blond dye their hair blond? Why do African and Asian people "appropriate" European / American culture. JFC, everyone wears jeans now...isn't that appropriating US cowboy culture?

by Anonymousreply 4March 29, 2022 1:26 AM

Don't forget classical music and symphonies, R4.

It all came from white people.

And like you said, jeans. And bikinis.

And McDonald's.

And airplanes. And computers.

All invented by white people.

So anyone who isn't white would be culturally appropriating these things.

Isn't that how it works?

by Anonymousreply 5March 29, 2022 1:29 AM

R1 is correct. Braids are pretty universal. There's only so much humans can do with hair, especially before dyes were readily available. Braiding is one of the more obvious ways to accessorize.

by Anonymousreply 6March 29, 2022 1:30 AM

Life is hard as it is without all this nonsense. Yeah, call me racist, "fragile whitey". I don't care. This shit is so exhausting.

Plus, I remember being in the fourth grade and getting in trouble when I was caught braiding a girl's hair in class. This was 1984.

by Anonymousreply 7March 29, 2022 1:31 AM

This no talent ho.

by Anonymousreply 8March 29, 2022 1:32 AM

Why is it called "cultural appropriation" and not something positive - like 'cultural appreciation'? I am so sick of this shit.

by Anonymousreply 9March 29, 2022 1:48 AM

[quote] Why is it called "cultural appropriation" and not something positive - like 'cultural appreciation'?

Because the complainers always have to complain about something.

by Anonymousreply 10March 29, 2022 2:00 AM

The Braidy Bunch.

by Anonymousreply 11March 29, 2022 2:03 AM

Isn't straightening your hair to look like caucasian hair a form of cultural appropriation, too? Silky bobs have been worn by white women since at least the 1920s.

by Anonymousreply 12March 29, 2022 2:04 AM

Overrated no talent Zendaya can go fuck off. Zoe Kravitz is a far better actress and much more attractive.

by Anonymousreply 13March 29, 2022 2:04 AM

I actually like Zendaya but she's wrong about this.

by Anonymousreply 14March 29, 2022 2:10 AM

Coming from someone who is *cough* appropriating heterosexuality....

by Anonymousreply 15March 29, 2022 2:15 AM

Why do PoC females never check their "facts?" White Europeans have plaited (braided) our hair for thousands of years. The Vikings, Celts, Anglo Saxons, Picts, etc., all plaited/braided their hair. If she wants to play the cultural appropriation game, then why is it ok for Black women to wear "blonde" wigs/weaves styled into hairstyles appropriated from White women?

by Anonymousreply 16March 29, 2022 2:19 AM

I'm exhausted.

by Anonymousreply 17March 29, 2022 2:22 AM

r16, usually shorn from poverty stricken Asian or Indian women

by Anonymousreply 18March 29, 2022 2:22 AM

She's wrong.

Also, I wish she'd get that damn tooth fixed. Normally, I'm a fan of regular teeth, but not hers.

by Anonymousreply 19March 29, 2022 2:29 AM

Well, smell her! Patchouli stinkin' bitch.

by Anonymousreply 20March 29, 2022 2:33 AM

I understand it's confusing because the assumption is that she means all kinds of braided hairstyles. That's not what she means. She doesn't mean the typical braided hairstyles (three strand braids, French braids, plait braids, etc.). She's specifically talking about Box braids, that African and African-Americans use and popularized.

Are you for real? First off, Zoe has no talent. Her face is the product of extreme plastic. Furthermore, she just did two interviews crying racism at everything. She’s a bigger clown than this one. The stupid bitch grew up in a white area and has had her Jewish white ass pampered since the day she was born.

Haven’t you all heard? Everything food or popular originated from blacks. They reserve the right to be insufferable assholes now and pretend that they are the only people who have ever suffered or been creative. I guess they should let the Jews know so they can pass the violin.

by Anonymousreply 26March 29, 2022 5:43 AM

Hey, anyone remember that culture from the last 10,000 years that didn’t appropriate things from other cultures?

Yeah, me neither.

by Anonymousreply 27March 29, 2022 5:50 AM

Oh OK R21, then I get her point. Fair enough. I thought she was talking about braids in general.

Maybe Ancient Egypt R27? They're one of the oldest civilizations so I think they tended to be appropriated from rather than do the appropriating.

by Anonymousreply 28March 29, 2022 5:54 AM

Jeez you guys get this explained every time and then every time this topic comes around you all pretend like you don’t know the difference between cultural appreciation and appropriation.

Cultural appropriation occurs when an oppressed group has an item from their culture seized by a non oppressed group, the non oppressed group offers little credit or patronage of services in order to do this. See, white women wearing box braids (for fun).

With cultural appreciation, there is no economic advantage being taken, the people from whom the cultural artifact comes from don’t lose any social or cultural capital in process. See, black women straightening their hair (for a job for instance).

While it is really taken too far in many instances, there is a solid economic basis for the difference between appropriation and appreciation.

by Anonymousreply 29March 29, 2022 6:06 AM

I think they've found the earliest records of box braids coming from India. There's also really early records of them being in France too.

This is seriously what people get upset over? How someone else does their hair? If all white women in the world agreed to stop putting box braids in their hair, would this solve racism once and for all? Of course not. There are other things we could do to aim for that, but they are difficult, time consuming and probably won't see results for generations. So much easier to just scold others and try to guilt them into never interacting with other people different from them.

As you go back in time, you'll find everyone has taken something cultural from another group, mixed it, appropriated it. I mean in answer to this:

[quote]She's specifically talking about Box braids, that African and African-Americans use and popularized.

Under these so called rules of cultural appropriation, you could legitimately ask: "Which tribe first used them?" and then demand that only people with ancestry to that particular tribe can use them. Unless they're the type of person who thinks all Africans are the same, in which case, they're being just as racist as the people they claim they are fighting against.

Also, that article is written so embarrassingly badly: "When she's not shutting down bodyshamers, giving it up for David Bowie, and being a boss badass,...."

Seriously?

by Anonymousreply 30March 29, 2022 6:35 AM

Why is she appropriating the language of English people, works in movies created and developed by white men, uses internet invented by white engineers, probably goes to the doctor and not the witch doctor.

The woke have done big damage to POC because they entice them to behave and talk like idiots.

Btw. old Slavic people had braids too.

by Anonymousreply 31March 29, 2022 7:25 AM

Everyone at the moment seems to be competing to see who can be the biggest victim, it seems. Everything is a potential trauma, to be used to shame others, to lord a kind of superiority over others.

by Anonymousreply 32March 29, 2022 7:31 AM

R32 Not really. As I mentioned before, the western civilization is based on the Ancient Greek foundation. Literature, theatre, history, philosophy, medicine, you name it. Yet, if you have been there you would see the friendly and laid back people who don’t bitch about no cultural appropriation. Yet you have a hairstyle here and want to start a patent case.

by Anonymousreply 33March 29, 2022 7:39 AM

That link is 6 years old. Why are dragging this shit up? Just wanna stir the pot?

by Anonymousreply 34March 29, 2022 7:47 AM

R29 is a fucking idiot. Appreciation doesn’t exist to the woke crowd.

by Anonymousreply 35March 29, 2022 8:14 AM

R34, do try to keep up. People were trying to make her an example of a black woman in Hollywood, better than Jada.

by Anonymousreply 36March 29, 2022 8:15 AM

R34 Maybe because she is so popular now, 6 years ago nobody knew who Zendaya was. So, it is only normal that people will be curious in her opinions, particularly if they are so controversial as this one.

by Anonymousreply 37March 29, 2022 8:20 AM

Make this tedious bitch go the fuck away already! Giuliana Rancic had her number years ago.

by Anonymousreply 38March 29, 2022 8:21 AM

[quote][R34], do try to keep up.

That’s rich coming from the OP who posted a SIX YEAR OLD ARTICLE just to stir shit! You keep up!

by Anonymousreply 39March 29, 2022 8:22 AM

Wait, this is from SIX YEARS AGO? Why the hell are we talking about this?

Stupid thread.

by Anonymousreply 40March 29, 2022 9:18 AM

Does her pussy stink? I like blue. I was molested. I have sufficient. Scchendaya.

by Anonymousreply 41March 29, 2022 9:47 AM

Remember last year when they were trying to say white people can’t wear hoop earrings?

by Anonymousreply 42March 29, 2022 12:04 PM

Such people make black seem like a selfish child who plays with everybody's toys, yet keeps his cabbage dolls jealously for itself.

by Anonymousreply 43March 29, 2022 12:15 PM

I mean as: I can use your language, literature, art, education, medicine, science, technology, institutions, but you can't use my haircut, styling, slang or pop music.

by Anonymousreply 44March 29, 2022 12:35 PM

And in the matter of styling, she allows herself to use Italian and French.

by Anonymousreply 45March 29, 2022 12:38 PM

[quote] Remember last year when they were trying to say white people can’t wear hoop earrings?

There are many Gen Z’ers on social media still trying to claim that nonsense. I think they just like being provocative and irksome.

by Anonymousreply 46March 29, 2022 1:06 PM

R46 or just being stupid.

by Anonymousreply 47March 29, 2022 1:11 PM

Zzzzzzzz

It's from 6 years ago.
