OP here. Just to clarify, I wasn't intending to be a cunt; I'm simply curious WTF happened to Liza. I know DLers have been mocking her slurred words for at least 20 years now, and obviously she's had multiple substance abuse issues, but I was mainly wondering if anyone knew she was *that* far gone.

I completely agree that Gaga handled the situation well, and that assuming it was Liza's own wish to present alongside her – and I'm guessing it was, along with Liza's de facto farewell to public life (where better to go out than one of the most watched awards shows on the planet?) – I think the Academy was right to grant her that wish. Still, that is simply NOT what people in their mid-70s usually look like nowadays, all the more so in Hollywood. Since someone referenced Dolly upthread: I watched the livestream of her SXSW performance a couple of weeks ago at the intro concert for the "Dollyverse." Despite being 76, she not only walked around stage the entire night in five-inch heels – without losing any breath, despite singing & carrying a guitar for most of the show – but has nearly ZERO vocal loss, unlike most other singers her age.

I realize Dolly's an anomaly in many ways, but Liza's also one IMO. She's younger than my own mother, who still walks & talks without difficulty, and it's stating the obvious that the likes of Cher & Jane Fonda are still the glammiest of the glam (though unlike Cher Dolly's never "retired" a dozen different times). Anyway, I was just curious what ailment would've reduced her to being confined to a wheelchair – and no, that's not something that generally happens even with extreme alcohol abuse, though harder substances are of course another story.

Try again, pumpkin. Have you ever even *known* an older person? Most people over the age of 70 have spinal stenosis of some sort. Crushed back discs can be replaced with implants and/or spinal fusion surgery nowadays, and I say that having had two discs removed in my early 30s due to a childhood head injury. My own grandfather didn't merely have three "crushed" discs; he had ZERO discs, given that they all herniated at some point. He lived into his 90s before passing away in his sleep from heart failure.

As for "severe scoliosis," that's something she would've had as a child that would've been corrected as a child. If it was truly *that* severe, she would've barely been able to walk post-20-years-old or so.

In any event, NONE of you bitches has come up with a plausible excuse for her condition. The most likely one – even more so than alcoholism – is that she's one of those people who routinely suffers from small strokes (e.g. several per month, if not several per week), and those can start even in one's 40s or 50s. I just read actress, director, writer Sarah Polley’s essays in the just out Run Towards the Danger and there’s one centered around her extreme case of scoliosis in the 1990s. Her mom had died and her father wasn’t really paying close attention to her, and even though she was the star of a big TV show they left it to her to wear her brace to correct it, which she didn’t. The costume people had to use all these different tricks to hide it visual, and she had one very developed adult breast on one side and basically nothing on the other.

She was starring in a big theatrical production of Alice in Wonderland and having a nervous breakdown and finally used the need to be operated on as a way to get out of her contract. The operation was bad, but it’s the recovery stretching on for 6-9 months that was really brutal. As severe as it was she hadn’t yet done any damage to her internal organs, but she was going to be soon at 15. Of course she has extensive scarring from the operation.
