Thug best actor winner, black tits spilling out of dresses, twats dancing on table tops, and it ends with this Liza now. What a depressing show.

There are some really weirdly hostile takes in this thread. Some of you need to... breathe and have a glass of water.
Yeah, it's sad when one of your favs shows real signs of aging and frailty, but, hey, she seemed genuinely happy to be there and the audience gave her perhaps the loudest ovation of the night. What a nice memory for her to have. As for Gaga, I'm not her biggest fan, but she was absolutely lovely with Liza. The idea that there was some kind of ill intent or calculation behind her treatment of LIza? Some of you need to... get out and talk to other human beings. There's cynicism and then there's nihilism.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 28, 2022 7:53 AM |
R40 I’d call a white actor who did this a thug too if he happened to punch someone else. And the tits spilling out just happened to be black not white so how is this racist?

Drunken drugged out Rami Malek, Liza clearly suffering from MS, Parkinson's, dementia or a combination of all three and Will Smith punching Chris Rock (they should've given Will a second Academy Award then and there for doing that). If this doesn't help the ratings I don't know what will.

I don't remember if the connection was ever mentioned on the broadcast that this year is the 50th anniversary of the release of CABARET? Perhaps Liza wanted to do the gig, as she remembers what the Oscars used to be before. If it helped her mental state or her desire to appear in public, then more power to her.

Liza would have crawled out on all fours if they let her. She LIVES for audience approval. After that, all she had is booze. Lorna is there for her, but Liza is too tiring to be around for long, which is why her sister doesn't allow her to live in her house.

[quote]That's so true. I remember that edition of the Oscars with Mary Pickford way back in the 1970s. And now here we are with Liza looking just as lost.
That was in 1976. Pickford was in a wheelchair (in a live remote from Pickfair) and was wearing a wig that was slightly askew. She was being presented with an honorary Oscar for her contributions to cinema. She seemed rvrn more out of it than Liza did last night. When they presented the award, she seemed vaguely aware that she had been given something and said, "I shall treasure it always." She died three years later.

[quote]The elderly, addled, post-stroke Bette Davis also had a difficult final appearance at the Oscars.
I think you’re exaggerating a bit there. She’s a little slow and cautious (she survived a fucking stroke) but she still had her fire. And to still make major appearances with the right side of her face basically paralyzed and looking every day of her age took balls. Compare that to Joan who became a recluse because of a few unflattering pictures from a party.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | March 29, 2022 1:33 AM |
I'll always adore Liza.
All haters are destined to die in a greasefire! Die I tell you die!
Liza did her thing the best she could. She probably stayed up late the night before practicing things or perhaps getting it on with George Hamilton since she recently went out to dinner with him.
It would have been cool if Liza didn't have her joint issues and walked out alongside Gaga while working an original Halston which the late Halston himself tailor made for her, but she truly has joint issues and worked a brand spanking new wheelchair instead. We all get old and so I'm not going to judge.
Liza knows where all the bodies are buried. She knows it all. Hollywood knows that she knows. We all do. She needs to dictate a memoir to a nice enough editor by now and spill it all.
I bet she had quite the lovely time of things and Lady Gaga comported herself very nicely. I'm not even really all up into Lady Gaga at the end of the day but she was obviously raised well because she was very respectful and deferential (for obvious reasons) to Liza.

Liza is a capital-S Star. She would have crawled onto that Oscar stage if she had to for the applause and recognition.

Liza was loving the applause. You could see her face light up every time the audience applauded for her.
Gaga didn’t rush it, either. She stopped, waited for Liza then continued the introduction and waited until the applause for Liza finished before speaking again.
Say what you will about her, but Gaga is very aware of the audience and was very respectful to Liza.

I doubt Liza has "managers" anymore other than friends like Michael Feinstein who help out. Secondly, darling, one doesn't get paid for presenting at awards shows beyond union scale at most, which is peanuts.
Face it, Liza wanted to be there and thought there was nothing alarming about her 76 year old appearance or not being able to walk.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | March 29, 2022 5:42 PM |
I think Liza did ok, and I have to wonder if her confusion is another thing to blame Will Smith before. I know from having older relatives that they can be fine at a big event until a ruckus happens then it takes hours to get them back normal.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | March 29, 2022 5:46 PM |

If Lady Gaga keeps it up with the good publicity, she'll get her Best Actress Oscar yet. The Academy is made up of old fucks and they love seeing one of their own taken care of--don't forget that Liza is, in her own quirky way, Hollywood royalty.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | March 29, 2022 6:48 PM |
I can’t. believe all the commentators, here and elsewhere, who think the elderly should just be ignored and abandoned. Sorry to disturb you but people get old and degenerate. It will happen to you too. To think that they should just be discarded and their achievements forgotten is so cruel.
There have been reports that after the slap it was pandemonium backstage. I agree with the poster who said this likely rattled Liza - it rattled everybody who came after that moment.
It was great to see Liza, better this year than next. I was thrilled when they announced Lady Gaga and Liza. It’s a shame Smith had to ruin the tone of the evening.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | March 29, 2022 7:00 PM |
R157 Liza is probably this way anyway regardless of the Will incident. I was actually quite shocked at her appearance. Sometimes it’s better to remember people as they were. No one’s saying she should be ignored and abandoned (Liza has family and plenty of friends]. Unfortunately everyone will remember this Oscar appearance with her being this unwell.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | March 29, 2022 7:17 PM |
R157 No one said "should just be ignored and abandoned" - but nice melodrama, good grief.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | March 29, 2022 7:23 PM |
Agree, and the setting was all wrong, A few scenes of her in CABARET (a la Juno. and The Godfather) would have been appropriate and given another reason for a big ovation. Perhaps they thought the contrast between Liza then and Liza now would have been too dispiriting, but that didn't stop them from hauling out a clearly disheveled Al Pacino, who. shuffled on and off without a word.

by Anonymous | reply 161 | March 29, 2022 7:39 PM |
R155, that's teleprompter problems - in order to accommodate the failing eyesight of an elderly star presenter, the letters on the prompter are SO LARGE, sometimes it's one word at a time and the star's delivery is halting. Lauren Bacall had the same issue at the Oscars a few years before Poitier. Neither had Alzheimer's.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | March 29, 2022 7:47 PM |
R134, I don't think we have to qualify Gaga's behavior any longer. She's a class act through and through, and if some folks don't get it, then it's their problem.

by Anonymous | reply 168 | March 29, 2022 8:39 PM |
Liza, unlike her mother, has plenty of money in old age and can retire gracefully. She doesn't have to hide away like a leper, but it does seem like this sort of public appearance is too much for her these days. I hope the Academy and others got the message: The only reasons her condition wasn't commented on more were the grace shown by Lady Gaga and the fact that everybody was still focused on the Will Smith thing.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | March 29, 2022 8:47 PM |
R162 he died of Alzheimer’s and dementia. It’s not the teleprompter. He clearly is somewhat impaired. His last public appearance was accepting the BAFTA honorary award on tape and it was even worse about 5 years ago.

Pretty well documented that Liza has had a rough life- substances etc. she’s not the first older adult I’ve seen fall apart in their 70s. She’s still a nice woman and in her prime she was a great entertainer. Cabaret is one of the best musicals ever, and she’s perfect in it.

OP here. Just to clarify, I wasn't intending to be a cunt; I'm simply curious WTF happened to Liza. I know DLers have been mocking her slurred words for at least 20 years now, and obviously she's had multiple substance abuse issues, but I was mainly wondering if anyone knew she was *that* far gone.
I completely agree that Gaga handled the situation well, and that assuming it was Liza's own wish to present alongside her – and I'm guessing it was, along with Liza's de facto farewell to public life (where better to go out than one of the most watched awards shows on the planet?) – I think the Academy was right to grant her that wish. Still, that is simply NOT what people in their mid-70s usually look like nowadays, all the more so in Hollywood. Since someone referenced Dolly upthread: I watched the livestream of her SXSW performance a couple of weeks ago at the intro concert for the "Dollyverse." Despite being 76, she not only walked around stage the entire night in five-inch heels – without losing any breath, despite singing & carrying a guitar for most of the show – but has nearly ZERO vocal loss, unlike most other singers her age.
I realize Dolly's an anomaly in many ways, but Liza's also one IMO. She's younger than my own mother, who still walks & talks without difficulty, and it's stating the obvious that the likes of Cher & Jane Fonda are still the glammiest of the glam (though unlike Cher Dolly's never "retired" a dozen different times). Anyway, I was just curious what ailment would've reduced her to being confined to a wheelchair – and no, that's not something that generally happens even with extreme alcohol abuse, though harder substances are of course another story.
Finally, I was remembering the wrong awards show re: Liz Taylor's hot-mess presentation – it was at the Globes, not Oscars.

by Anonymous | reply 219 | March 31, 2022 11:50 PM |
Liza looked okay 10 years ago when she first met Gaga. She was able to walk and move on her own just fine. Her condition has noticeably declined. Cher and Dolly are both around the same age and in amazing shape. Jane Fonda and Charo are both in their 80's and Mamie Van Doren is 91 and they are all in good shape as well.
Your body remembers and keeps a record of everything you do to it when you're young. Stuff you've done decades ago but have long since stopped can still lead to damage later on down the road (such as Jane Fonda and Madonna's vigorous exercise and dance routines). Which is why alcohol and drugs have both ravaged Liza as well as Liz Taylor (when she was still living).
by Anonymous | reply 220 | March 31, 2022 11:54 PM |
R215 You can also go on Amazon and watch Dolly still being able to not only appear on an awards show but to host it. She was just one of three hosts of the ACM awards which became the first major awards show to go to a streaming app.

Carrie Fisher died of some sort of heart issue at 60 (exacerbated by lifestyle). Lou Reed had a liver transplant at age 70 and still died soon after. Ava Gardner died of pneumonia after stroke at 67. Tom Petty died at 66 of a drug overdose - he had emphysema and joint issues. Rita Hayworth had a history of drinking or it may have been Alzheimers, but she died at 68.

by Anonymous | reply 248 | April 2, 2022 4:11 AM |
I will say, sadly, the US still suffers from higher infant mortality, which could be dragging down the life expectancy just as those deaths are largely responsible for the really low ones in the past, such as the Middle Ages.

Liza ain't in great shape but she has fared better than a fair number of her peers or her generation. She has lived longer than Patty Duke, Farrah Fawcett, David Bowie, Alan Rickman,, Prince, Madeleine Kahn,, John Denver, Meatloaf etc I think some are oversantising death, illness , frailty , old age , disability just a little.

Except for Prince and possibly Meatloaf those deaths were beyond their control.
by Anonymous | reply 251 | April 2, 2022 8:32 AM |
r251 I think you might be oversimplifying on several grounds
More cancers are lifestyle related than purely genetic so that would include Madeleine Kahn and Alan Rickman and Farrah Fawcett. If you are going in the direction of turning it into a morality tale about whose illness and or death is their own fault because they could control some aspect then you are opening a pandoras box. If you are going to do that you would have to be fair about it and probably judge all on that list in some way. I wasn't making a moralistic point about Liza but rather saying I don't think she fares healthwise in the league table of her generation as badly as some were saying..
In reality some people get away healthwise with abusing their body . Others don't and they pay for it.
Liza will not make it to 100 of that I am sure but she could still be fortunate enough to outlast more of her celebrity peers .

[quote]The average life expectancy in the U.S. is 78, so yeah, it kind of is what a lot of people look like at the end of their lives.
Um, no. The US life expectancy also includes everyone who works in a high-risk profession with routine on-the-job injuries (e.g. asbestosis from cleaning up asbestos-laden print without sufficient air filtering) to the majority of Americans who have mostly shitty healthcare coverage and *could* live much longer if they didn't have to shell out potentially hundreds of out-of-pocket dollars for a simple doctor visit, let alone anything beyond that.
Much like there's a difference between one-percenter lifestyles and those of other Americans, there's also a vast one between people who can afford (and who receive) coverage for nearly anything – and even if Liza's not as massively wealthy as Cher, I'd still assume she can afford the best health care available – and those who cannot. Absent a preexisting condition such as cancer – or death via accidental overdose, a la Carrie Fisher or Prince – most celebs these days live into their 80s and even 90s.
[quote]Liza has severe scoliosis, and it's been extremely painful for her since at least the time of Sterile Cuckoo. Add in the three crushed disks in her spine, and anyone can begin to understand the constant searing pain and mobility issues she's had for years.
Try again, pumpkin. Have you ever even *known* an older person? Most people over the age of 70 have spinal stenosis of some sort. Crushed back discs can be replaced with implants and/or spinal fusion surgery nowadays, and I say that having had two discs removed in my early 30s due to a childhood head injury. My own grandfather didn't merely have three "crushed" discs; he had ZERO discs, given that they all herniated at some point. He lived into his 90s before passing away in his sleep from heart failure.
As for "severe scoliosis," that's something she would've had as a child that would've been corrected as a child. If it was truly *that* severe, she would've barely been able to walk post-20-years-old or so.
In any event, NONE of you bitches has come up with a plausible excuse for her condition. The most likely one – even more so than alcoholism – is that she's one of those people who routinely suffers from small strokes (e.g. several per month, if not several per week), and those can start even in one's 40s or 50s. None of them by themselves cause much damage, but over the long term they take their toll.
[quote]Liza had encephalitis some years ago which left her with permanent mobility and speech issues.
That sounds almost like Michael Jackson attempting to "blame" all of his medical problems on having vitiligo. Encephalitis is treatable in most cases – and in the ones that can't be, death usually occurs quickly – and has no impact on one's mobility, even with an active infection. It causes confusion & drowsiness, not anything that'd put you in a wheelchair.

Gaga has really re-fashioned her image over the past few years. She used to be thought of as the freak who wore the meat dress and who went out of her way to shock and be very quirky. Now, with the Sound of Music tribute, her collaboration with Tony Bennett, her expansion in musical genres, and her appearance with and graciousness toward Liza, she is seen in a new light by many former critics. Just the opposite of Madonna.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | April 3, 2022 5:03 PM |
I don't know if that meeting was the same as her HBO concert but Gaga introduced her in the audience and told them she hoped they'd give her a standing ovation because she was such an inspiration. She said her instructors always said she'd never be a leading lady on broadway because of her ethnic looks to which she said "well what about Liza?"
by Anonymous | reply 280 | April 3, 2022 5:12 PM |
Gaga is far more talented than Madonna ever was, both as a musician and an actress. She's also managing her career more intelligently, in a way that will allow her to age gracefully and still be able to do interesting work when she's old.
by Anonymous | reply 281 | April 3, 2022 5:12 PM |
The best way to earn respect in the business is to show respect and admiration for the legends. And, what makes it work is that it seems genuine, not like she is doing it out of calculation. Gaga at the Oscars was a stand-in for all of Liza's fans and she represented them well.
by Anonymous | reply 282 | April 3, 2022 5:18 PM |
Unfortunately, R281, I don't think Gaga is aging gracefully. At 37 years old, she's already had too much plastic surgery. She's starting to look a little alien.
by Anonymous | reply 283 | April 3, 2022 6:08 PM |
We all know Madonna never admired anybody except Madonna. Her total lack of empathy is one reason she is such a limited actress.

r262, I don't know where you got your information about viral encephalitis, but you're wrong about all of it.
I'm really tired of so many people on DL making things up and being unable to understand either truth or reality.
Viral encephalitis can cause brain damage, and it affects neural cell function. It can cause brain bleed which, in turn, can bring on stroke-like symptoms. You can have cognitive decline, altered mental state, aphasia, and physical symptoms such as tremors and involuntary movement similar to Parkinson's.
I don't know why you'd let yourself look like an idiot online when 30 seconds on Google would get you to a webpage that would give you answers, instead of you making things up.

New York, New York wasn't working because Liza was wiping de Niro off the screen with every take. Scorsese had encouraged improvisation. Scorsese and de Niro were flummoxed. Scorsese finally took care of it during editing but began an affair with Liza which resulted in his directing her in the stage disaster Shine It On. They had to bring in Gower Champion to stage doctor it into The Act so that it could open on Broadway.

I know Datalounge is all about believing whatever crazy shit you want and fuck facts and reality, but I'm still going to point out yet again that Liza's real, actual, genuine doctors spoke to the press about her encephalitis at the time. They wouldn't have lied just to cover up a drug issue. They would have simply said nothing and let Liza lie about it if she wanted to.
Drugs and alcohol can vastly reduce the body's ability to respond successfully to infection. It's far more likely that she had an infection that became a serious case of viral encephalitis because drug use had ravaged her immune system.
by Anonymous | reply 302 | April 4, 2022 4:05 AM |

How much do you actually know about Liza Minnelli? When she's off stage, she's got nothing. She's a gargantuan neurotic mess. I don't blame her for falling off the wagon so often.

I just read actress, director, writer Sarah Polley’s essays in the just out Run Towards the Danger and there’s one centered around her extreme case of scoliosis in the 1990s. Her mom had died and her father wasn’t really paying close attention to her, and even though she was the star of a big TV show they left it to her to wear her brace to correct it, which she didn’t. The costume people had to use all these different tricks to hide it visual, and she had one very developed adult breast on one side and basically nothing on the other.
She was starring in a big theatrical production of Alice in Wonderland and having a nervous breakdown and finally used the need to be operated on as a way to get out of her contract. The operation was bad, but it’s the recovery stretching on for 6-9 months that was really brutal. As severe as it was she hadn’t yet done any damage to her internal organs, but she was going to be soon at 15. Of course she has extensive scarring from the operation.
by Anonymous | reply 315 | April 5, 2022 12:17 PM |
R314, 'treatment' involves (a) regular chiropractic adjustments - not a cure, or (b) surgery, which only corrects a portion of it, and you live with a metal bar in your back for the rest of your life.
Don't belittle scoliosis. You can't get your intel from a stupid movie.

Btw, I have scoliosis too, so did my mother. With me there's pain and height loss, but I'm walking at age 64. Not all cases are the same, but if it's as severe are Liza says, you'd have seen it on her in her 30s. I didn't. Liza used to get publicly fucked by German Shepherds and Rottweilers. She love to put on a S*H*O*W*!!! That can't have helped her crippled spine much. These stories are well known. She had to pay $500,000 in the early eighties to stop some tape from being released. Liza was well known in the balcony and the basement. KinKy.
She's a lifelong drug addict who did nothing to better herself. She abused her body for art and pleasure. Pills and liquor sounds cute, but Liza was hardcore. The real life of Liza Minnelli would curl your toes.
She was a great live performer. But not since 40 years ago. I was born 39 years ago. But I know the score. She's 'nice' if brain dead, addled and living in fantasy makes a person NICE.

And no, this is not the life of most 75 year olds, old drunks injection drug users and dog ganbang video performers or not. Liza got the Pisces luck. What an exciting first 40 years. Then nothing but illness, accidents, a few small triumphs and a lingering farewell. Like Liz and Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone. RIP
