Susan Peters, actress; was nominated for an Academy Award for "Random Harvest". She was paralyzed from the waist down after getting shot with a rifle while on a duck hunting excursion with her husband. To make it worse, her mother died while she was recovering from the accident, and her husband subsequently left her. She tried to continue acting, appearing in roles where she was wheelchair-bound, and attempted to live as she had before as much as possible. Lucille Ball, with whom she was very close friends, tried to help her out of her depression, but it only worsened.

She began dating a new man, who also left her. After this, she moved in with her brother and her mental state continued to deteriorate. She began getting skin and kidney infections resulting from her paralysis, and told her physician that she was "tired" and that it might "be better if she didn't live." After that, she began starving herself and refusing liquids. She eventually died of pneumonia and a kidney infection several weeks later, but the self-imposed starvation and dehydration is what triggered her organs into shutting down. Her story is beyond dark. It's especially sad because she was beautiful and a legitimate talent.

Thurman Munson, All-Star catcher for the NY Yankees.

The plane he was piloting clipped a tree on approach to a Canton, OH airport and crashed. Two friends (one of whom was his flight instructor) survived and tried to pull him out, but he seemed to be pinned in his seat by the wreckage & couldn't move.

He was conscious immediately following the crash (although slumped over the controls). He asked if they were okay, and then: "Help me, Dave". Smoke & fire filled the cockpit, forcing the two men out (both sustained 2nd-3rd degree burns) and they had to watch helplessly as Thurman burned up. An autopsy revealed that he'd broken his neck & had been paralyzed on impact. He was 32 years old.

GAME SHOW HOST RAY COMBS COMMITS SUICIDE

Former game show host Ray Combs hanged himself with bedsheets in a hospital psychiatric ward after weeks of suicide attempts, including banging his head on walls, police said Monday.

The 40-year-old onetime host of "The New Family Feud" was taken to Glendale Adventist Medical Center on Saturday with head injuries and was admitted for 72 hours of observation, Sgt. Rick Young said.

About 14 hours later, hospital staff found Combs hanging in a closet. There was no suicide note.

Because the hospital was informed of the previous suicide attempts, Combs was in a secured room -- one that should contain nothing a patient harm himself with. But he was not under constant supervision, Young said.

Combs hosted the game show from 1988 to 1994, when he was replaced by his own predecessor, Richard Dawson.

Combs suffered several personal and professional setbacks in recent years, including a divorce and being replaced by Dawson. He was also seriously injured in a July 1994 car accident on a highway north of Los Angeles, leaving him temporarily paralyzed.

I don't know if it's been mentioned already but the death of Françoise Dorléac, the sister of Catherine Deneuve, at the age of 25. She was on the way to Nice airport. She lost control of a rented Renault 10 and hit a signpost ten kilometres from Nice. The car flipped over and burst into flames. She was seen struggling to get out of the car, but was unable to open the door. Police later identified her body only from the fragment of a cheque book, a diary, and her driver's licence.

He had drugs & alcohol in his system & it’s believed the top of the bottle was on a bit tight so he used his teeth to open the bottle. Back in the old days tops on these kinds of bottles could leak a bit when used & get crusted by the chemicals in the solution once the solution dried. I remember doing the exact same thing. The hypothesis was that he was kind of drunk & high and he hiccuped or otherwise inhaled when the cap loosened and his gag reflex was impaired. The top became lodged in his airway.

One-half of the Saget story may be true. There probably was an "accident" that turned into severe head trauma. However, there is a big missing piece to the story the family doesn't want revealed. That sounds as if drug consumption was involved, and/or he had a sexual guest(s) earlier, but 'they' were not directly part of his head injuries. If there was foul play involved, there would be a criminal investigation. The family cannot overrule the police or D.A. looking into a homicide or related crime.

The NY Post says Bourdain used the belt from his bathrobe to hang himself, R519. I guess he used it because it was convenient and I imagine certain types of rope cut into your skin and hurt like hell before you pass out. Something made of cloth / fabric should be more comfortable. L'Wren Scott hanged herself with a black silk scarf, according to The Guardian. Kate Spade also hanged herself with a scarf from a doorknob.
