Christopher Reeve
Let's discuss American film actor Christopher Reeve.
Born into an affluent family, Reeve graduated from both Cornell and Julliard. His big break came when Katharine Hepburn personally cast him in a Broadway production of A Matter of Gravity.
However, his life changed forever when he was cast as the titular character in Richard Donner's Superman. Reeve worked alongside Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder, Jackie Cooper, Ned Beatty, Susannah York, Glen Ford, Terence Stamp, and Marlon Brando. Reeve would go on to appear in four Superman films all together.
Reeve also appeared in some excellent films: Somewhere in Time with Jane Seymour and Christopher Plummer and Merchant Ivory's The Bostonians with Vanessa Redgrave.
He appeared in good comedies: Deathtrap, Noise's Off, Switching Channels, and Speechless.
His last film before his terrible accident was the elegant Merchant Ivory-Mike Nichols produced The Remains of the Day with Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, James Fox, and Hugh Grant.
Imagine he never had his accident and was alive today.

He’s coked out to the gills in OP’s picture.
Regardless, I liked him, and it’s a shame he died in such a freak, yet not too rare of an accident.
Falls from horses are common amongst the horsey set. How you fall and what you fall onto and how you land, is random AF, and coming out of it alive is also quite common, yet still very random.
Still, it’s a shame he lost his life doing something so fun.

I think he was a good actor. He was in some very good movies: the first Superman, Donner's Superman II, Somewhere in Time, Deathtrap, The Bostonians, Noises Off, and The Remains of the Day.
He held his own with Anthony Hopkins, James Fox, Gene Hackman, Terence Stamp, Christopher Plummer, Michael Caine, Denholm Elliott, and Vanessa Redgrave.

According to friends who knew him at Cornell, he would spend hours admiring himself in the mirror.
Weirdly, OP's post makes him look at a lot like Miles O'Keefe -- same tight lipped, high-cheekboned face.

Christopher Reeve had the power (onscreen, anyway) to convince the audience that yes, he might be incredibly attractive but that was a lot less important to him than you, and that he still had to work for things like a normal human being.
In real life, he may well have been a narcissistic nightmare. So he had that going for him.

After the first Superman - Christopher Reeve wanted to be known as a "serious" actor, so he turned down so many movie in pursuit of "quality films"
Among the roles he turned down - Body Heat, American Gigolo, The Bounty, Urban Cowboy & Romancing the Stone
After going through a career slump in the 80s, when the 90s came he began to re-establishment himself as good character actor with role in the Remains of the Day and Speechless - then his accident happened.

I went with my parents to see Superman in the theater in December 1978. I went to a Variety store perpendicular to the theater ( do eldergays remember variety stores before the CVS was all over the place) and bought a jumbo Nestle's Crunch Bar- if I remember correctly.
We all enjoyed the movie. For my 13 year old self half of the fun of going to a movie was the treat I was consuming while watching the movie.

Of course there would be rumors to that effect. He was a very handsome actor, and all handsome actors are gay or bi, right? No handsome actor would ever turn down sex with another man, isn't that so? Well, that's the belief some nuts have. There have also been gay rumors about him here, of course there would be. One of the most laughable was that he and Robin Williams were lovers. I'm sure you think that's a clever remark, but it's quite the opposite. As I said, the masseur in question seemed quite credible. We were talking after our massage session, and I don't remember how it came up, but at some point he told me that Christopher Reeve had been a client. (Chris was still alive at the time but this was some years after his accident.) Seeing as how the masseur could have made up a lie about anyone being a client, but named Chris specifically even though this was after his accident and he was no longer a star, the story seemed credible to me. Again the term bisexual seems lost on people. Reeve was upper class, lived in a liberal environment, and was involved in the arts and university life which has a lot of gay and bi people which would make him more open-minded than most. Plus all the anecdotes that claim he was involved with men. Obviously getting cast in Superman made him more vigilant about who to sleep with. The press wasn't going to out him based on past stories. Who'd want to out Superman. Reeve likely just settled into a heterosexual life that was expected of him like many bisexual. Datalounge refuses to accept bisexual men exist. They will claim someone can either be gay or straight. Despite the millions of men who sleep with both men and women.

Given there's nothing wrong with being gay and straight people are the majority and hold privileges. I don't see the big deal of speculating sexual orientation especially of people we don't know. He's dead and nobody is harassing him. Also why is it okay to accept that every male celebrity is straight? Bisexual and gay ones exist and we know they are told to keep that part of themselves private. I don't agree with outing people by force but I'm not sure why it's a crime now to assume a famous man is gay or bi. Yes it's wish fulfillment but it's harmless. People like to be offended so easily.

R104, from what Chris said regarding the tragic accident, that it was one of the easiest jumps . Something caused the horse to stop abruptly and Reeve’s hands were wrapped around the saddle reigns and he couldn’t break his fall with arms . His head to the brunt and severed his spinal cord . If his hands were free, he would have had a broken arm or wrist

R136 99 percent of celebs are gay. That even extends into athletics. The need to compensate is strong. An ordinary black is a nobody but a black celebrity is treated as human. I would even guess that most war heroes are gay. With social media, it's pretty easy to investigate who is gay.

Reminder: there is no such thing as bi. Most gays for various reasons go to great lengths to prove that they can have a fake relationship with opposite sex. That does not make them bi.

I saw "A Matter of Gravity" with Katherine Hepburn and Christopher Reeve at the Colonial Theatre on News Year's Eve, December 31, 1975. It was a thrill to see Hepburn on stage. Reeve played Hepburn's nephew and was unknown at the time. Three years later in 1978, Reeve was a star playing the lead in in the first Superman movie.

R47, it's been a long time, but at the time I thought he was getting good reviews for Rear Window because no one wanted to be a heartless bastard. Unfortunately, the accident had compromised him as an actor in ways other than movement. His voice was very limited in power and expressive range. He got a Golden Globe nomination and won a SAG for that film, but I suspect people were rewarding "courage" and "perseverance."
Remaking one of the really good Hitchcocks is perilous even in the best of circumstances, as we saw with Gus van Sant's Psycho the same year. The recent Rebecca on Netflix was another dud. I know that was more a new adaptation of the novel than a remake of the 1940 film, but it didn't compare.

I met him a couple of years before he died. He absolutely, positively believed that between cybernetic implants and nerve regeneration, he'd someday regain at least limited upper-body control & the ability to (sort of) walk (even if it required a robot exoskeleton). I was sad that he ended up dying from something stupid like a respiratory infection (which are actually quite life-threatening if your ability to cough, or even fully control your own breathing, is limited).

What befell Christopher Reeve was one of the greatest celebrity tragedies. Here he was, this big, athletic, handsome man, only in his forties, wildly in love with his wife and a new father, and boom, in instant he's rendered completely immobile and disabled. He did the best he could to continue his life but it was heartbreaking what happened to him. In his memoir he describes his recovery and his everyday routine as a quadriplegic; it's difficult to read. And he had to deal with it, day to day. It was amazing he lived on for as long as he did.

What a tragedy. When I was a kid, DC Comics ran a contest; you had to buy like 20 comics or more and clip out coupons and mail them in. TWO lucky kids were chosen as winners and they appeared as extras in Superman.
They were high school boys in the football scene, I think.
I wanted to win that contest so badly.
Decades later, I was all grown up, moved to LA and was an extra in Spider-Man 2 (Tobey).

Reeve's wife has little to nothing to do with it. She's dead too and maybe she also was bisexual. Bisexual men and bisexual women are a perfect match. It's the homophobic fraus who are obsessed with Reeve that deny his bisexuality. Or the fraus who insist George Michael was really bisexual not just gay. The mental gymnastics are great.

[quote] Her wikipedia article links to an NY Times article that mentions that she used to perform as a singer in smoky bars and hotel lobbies.
That's how Christopher Reeve met her. He saw her sing in a cabaret and apparently fell in love with her at first sight. He said:
"She wore an off the shoulder dress and sang "The Music That Makes Me Dance." Oh, my God. Right then I went down, hook, line and sinker. All my friends who were there saw it happen. Afterwards I went backstage. This was difficult, because whenever I'm really attracted to someone , really knocked out, I can be very clumsy. At the time I was a successful film actor and pretty established. You wouldn't think I'd have a problem with a simple conversation with trying to meet a woman, but I could become very awkward. Playing Clark Kent was no stretch for me."
Well, they did meet and date and end up marrying. Reeves was not inclined to be married; he had a long relationship with a woman that had produced two children. But after getting some therapy where he worked though his fears about marriage he decided that "in very short order, I would be a fool to lose this woman, this relationship. So they married and had a son and were very happy during the time they had together.

The Bostonians is a Merchant-Ivory film based on the classic Henry James novel. It stars Reeve, Vanessa Redgrave, Madeleine Potter, Linda Hunt, Wesley Addy, Nancy Marchand, Wallace Shawn, and Jessica Tandy. It was nominated for two Academy Awards.
Noises Off is a hilarious comedy starring Reeve, Michael Caine, Carol Burnett, John Ritter, Julie Hagerty, Nicolette Sheridan, Marilu Henner, and Denholm Elliott.
The Remains of the Day is a Merchant Ivory film based on Kazuo Ishiguro's Pulitzer Prize winning novel. It starred Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, James Fox, Hugh Grant, Peter Vaughn, Tim Piggot-Smith, Michael Lonsdale, and Reeve. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards.

Remains of The Day is not a Christopher Reeves movie. He had a small part in which he didn't shine.
Did Reeves always play secondary roles in ensemble films? He was cast as a type I imagine. A Moore's 2 for 1 suit sale model, or an almost handsome but somewhat weak man with a bad nose job. A bad beak.

Maybe he was better on stage. Kate Hupburn must've seen something in him, right? And he made it to John Houseman's prestigious The Acting Company at Juilliard.
Remember that awful Switching Channels with Burt Reynolds, Kathleen Turner, and Chris Reeve? Turner's agent must've really sucked. She was solid A list at the time, and Reeve and Reynolds had both slipped to B list at best. From then on, her career took a steep nosedive.

I met Reeve in 1985 at a Sunday matinee of “As Is” at Circle Rep in the Village. Since the mostly subscription audience was older people, he and I were roughly the only younger ones there. I complimented him on his work in “Fifth of July” and the movie, “Somewhere in Time.” He was diffident and friendly. We met again after the play, and went our separate ways. Curiously, I encountered him again in Sheridan Square about an hour later. We joked about “Small world,” etc. as I walked on, I looked back, and saw him looking back at me.

Christopher Reeve and Lynda Carter both looked exactly like Superman and Wonder Woman should look, it was like they jumped right out of the comic books. You sound absolutely nothing like and actual Black American. You have been outed as a white Canuck who's VERY middle-aged.
Any American could look at your posts and see that you do not have a trace of Black American vernacular.
You fucking dumbass Canuck.

Chris Reeves, who is spending eternity sucking cocks in hell in his wheelchair, would be ecstatic to know we is all talking about him in 2022.

Not every black person types with vernacular. Speaking and typing are two different things. And on a forum that has a lot of white people, a black user would likely avoid vernacular to be better understood. But that said there is a lot of LARPers on here who play pretend as gay, women or minorities

It's criminal that such a fine human specimen was never documented in the nude. Men of his caliber come around what--once or twice a century? Shame on Hugh Hefner for not tossing him a mill in exchange for immortalizing his naked body on film for all of time. When you're this hot you owe it to mankind to get naked. It's only right. It's not even about sex, it's about art.

[quote] As during the height of Chris Reeve’s popularity I heard almost daily from strangers how much I looked like him, sometimes accompanied by a gasp, I take personal offense to those who say he was ugly.
Obviously they were gasping because you somehow believed them!

Too bad he turned down American Gigolo. To think, we could’ve seen ALL of him if he hadn’t.

[quote]Was there an accident or injury which necessitated a nose job for Reeve? Anyone have the skinny on the impossibly skinny bridge? In earlier pics, his nose seems perfectly fine, well suited to his face, and size appropriate.
Unless he had a nose job as a teenager, it's always been that way:
