Christopher Reeve

Let's discuss American film actor Christopher Reeve.

Born into an affluent family, Reeve graduated from both Cornell and Julliard. His big break came when Katharine Hepburn personally cast him in a Broadway production of A Matter of Gravity.

However, his life changed forever when he was cast as the titular character in Richard Donner's Superman. Reeve worked alongside Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder, Jackie Cooper, Ned Beatty, Susannah York, Glen Ford, Terence Stamp, and Marlon Brando. Reeve would go on to appear in four Superman films all together.

Reeve also appeared in some excellent films: Somewhere in Time with Jane Seymour and Christopher Plummer and Merchant Ivory's The Bostonians with Vanessa Redgrave.

He appeared in good comedies: Deathtrap, Noise's Off, Switching Channels, and Speechless.

His last film before his terrible accident was the elegant Merchant Ivory-Mike Nichols produced The Remains of the Day with Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, James Fox, and Hugh Grant.

Imagine he never had his accident and was alive today.

One of the few Americans to be invited on the show.

Handsome, good actor and seemed like just a lovely guy. What else can you say?

by Anonymousreply 2March 23, 2022 7:48 PM

R2 He always seemed very intelligent and classy, too.

by Anonymousreply 3March 23, 2022 7:49 PM

He was great frinds with Robin Williams at Juilliard and afterwards.

by Anonymousreply 4March 23, 2022 7:52 PM

He was good in The Bostonians. Him and Vanessa Redgrave had great chemistry.

by Anonymousreply 5March 23, 2022 7:54 PM

This is still one of my favorite sketches on SNL

He’s coked out to the gills in OP’s picture.

Regardless, I liked him, and it’s a shame he died in such a freak, yet not too rare of an accident.

Falls from horses are common amongst the horsey set. How you fall and what you fall onto and how you land, is random AF, and coming out of it alive is also quite common, yet still very random.

Still, it’s a shame he lost his life doing something so fun.

by Anonymousreply 7March 23, 2022 8:02 PM

Ruined his career by rejecting everything including Pretty Woman. Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth!

I’ll be here all week.

by Anonymousreply 8March 23, 2022 8:02 PM

Dull as dishwater. He’s downright awful in Street Smart. Morgan Freeman easily steals the movie.

by Anonymousreply 9March 23, 2022 8:06 PM

He would be an acting professor at Hampshire College or somewhere similar if he were still alive and didnt have the accident

by Anonymousreply 10March 23, 2022 8:07 PM

Down low as hell, or so the rumor went.

by Anonymousreply 11March 23, 2022 8:08 PM

I think he was a good actor. He was in some very good movies: the first Superman, Donner's Superman II, Somewhere in Time, Deathtrap, The Bostonians, Noises Off, and The Remains of the Day.

He held his own with Anthony Hopkins, James Fox, Gene Hackman, Terence Stamp, Christopher Plummer, Michael Caine, Denholm Elliott, and Vanessa Redgrave.

by Anonymousreply 12March 23, 2022 8:14 PM

According to friends who knew him at Cornell, he would spend hours admiring himself in the mirror.

Weirdly, OP's post makes him look at a lot like Miles O'Keefe -- same tight lipped, high-cheekboned face.

R14 To. be fair, if I looked like Christopher Reeve, I would be admiring myself in the mirror and beating our big beautiful cock until I swore it out.

by Anonymousreply 15March 23, 2022 8:32 PM

Christopher Reeve had the power (onscreen, anyway) to convince the audience that yes, he might be incredibly attractive but that was a lot less important to him than you, and that he still had to work for things like a normal human being.

In real life, he may well have been a narcissistic nightmare. So he had that going for him.

by Anonymousreply 16March 23, 2022 11:01 PM

I always thought Reeve had graduated from Princeton.

by Anonymousreply 17March 24, 2022 12:32 AM

[quote]His big break came

by Anonymousreply 18March 24, 2022 12:38 AM

He looked his best in The Remains of the Day.

by Anonymousreply 19March 24, 2022 1:51 AM

Super boring

by Anonymousreply 20March 24, 2022 1:51 AM

R16, that was a lovely post. I never thought about it, but you are so right. CR definitely conveyed true humility as both a person and an actor. He did not come across as being self-obsessed in the least. He and his wife had such a tragic ending.

by Anonymousreply 21March 24, 2022 1:52 AM

After the first Superman - Christopher Reeve wanted to be known as a "serious" actor, so he turned down so many movie in pursuit of "quality films"

Among the roles he turned down - Body Heat, American Gigolo, The Bounty, Urban Cowboy & Romancing the Stone

After going through a career slump in the 80s, when the 90s came he began to re-establishment himself as good character actor with role in the Remains of the Day and Speechless - then his accident happened.

by Anonymousreply 22March 24, 2022 2:06 AM

Let's not. Get a fucking life. Cunt OP. I hate you.

by Anonymousreply 23March 24, 2022 2:07 AM

I went with my parents to see Superman in the theater in December 1978. I went to a Variety store perpendicular to the theater ( do eldergays remember variety stores before the CVS was all over the place) and bought a jumbo Nestle's Crunch Bar- if I remember correctly.

We all enjoyed the movie. For my 13 year old self half of the fun of going to a movie was the treat I was consuming while watching the movie.

[quote] Down low as hell, or so the rumor went.

Of course there would be rumors to that effect. He was a very handsome actor, and all handsome actors are gay or bi, right? No handsome actor would ever turn down sex with another man, isn't that so? Well, that's the belief some nuts have. There have also been gay rumors about him here, of course there would be. One of the most laughable was that he and Robin Williams were lovers. They were good FRIENDS. There are men who have friendships with other men without any cock sucking involved.

by Anonymousreply 55March 24, 2022 5:12 AM

There was a scene in Somewhere In Time (1980) when Christopher Reeve is walking around in his apartment in the present. He walked like a fairy.

by Anonymousreply 56March 24, 2022 5:15 AM

As usual, being bisexual is never considered. A goodlooking man like Reeve could get it from both sexes very easily.

Reeve shoulda played Superman after he had the horse accident or whatever. Funny to see him rolling around the world saving everyone.

by Anonymousreply 65March 24, 2022 9:12 AM

Reeves was ugly but his charisma made him handsome. He also looked good from certain angles. Robin Williams was gay . Shocker.

by Anonymousreply 68March 24, 2022 11:29 AM

I don't think anyone ever played superman so well, the man had something special. I love the scene from the original when he's standing on the building about to catch the burglars. A guy in his office looks up, sees it, superman flutters off, then he says "nah".

by Anonymousreply 75March 24, 2022 2:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 76March 24, 2022 2:34 PM

I'm a child of the 70s, and my mother and grandmother used to watch the morning soap Love of Life after the Price is Right (10:30 am in New Orleans back then, since TPIR was only a half hour at the time), and Reeve was a cast member, he was young and tall, handsome and fine, and shirtless a lot, he caught my gay eyeballs even back then, and I was about 8yo. lol I've been crushing on him ever since, and a few years later he's Superman! He looked so good, I've always liked him up to the tragic end. He always seemed very genuine and sincere, down to earth and relatable. He appeared in many of my gay fantasies, dreamy. :-)

by Anonymousreply 77March 24, 2022 2:35 PM

OP- In your photo Christopher Reeve has the GAY stare in his eyes.

by Anonymousreply 78March 24, 2022 2:37 PM

[quote]A gay masseur. Such a credible source.

I'm sure you think that's a clever remark, but it's quite the opposite. As I said, the masseur in question seemed quite credible. We were talking after our massage session, and I don't remember how it came up, but at some point he told me that Christopher Reeve had been a client. (Chris was still alive at the time but this was some years after his accident.) Seeing as how the masseur could have made up a lie about anyone being a client, but named Chris specifically even though this was after his accident and he was no longer a star, the story seemed credible to me. Of course, I don't know for sure, and it doesn't really matter now, does it?

by Anonymousreply 79March 24, 2022 2:41 PM

R79- That word by itself MASSEUR sounds GAY

by Anonymousreply 80March 24, 2022 2:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 81March 24, 2022 3:00 PM

by Anonymousreply 82March 24, 2022 3:26 PM

R67 his face was freakish from most angles. Lots of people are quite ugly but charisma makes them look handsome. Ie mick jagger . Oppositely, Pitt has good face but lack of charisma makes him kind of plain. Chris had a goofy body as well which is prolly why he got injured

by Anonymousreply 83March 24, 2022 4:17 PM

So, everyone's gay and ugly. Got it.

by Anonymousreply 87March 24, 2022 4:50 PM

I never thought he was all that attractive. Not ugly, just boring.

by Anonymousreply 88March 24, 2022 4:51 PM

R88- He was good looking but never had ANY sex appeal for me.

by Anonymousreply 89March 24, 2022 5:02 PM

Mick Jagger is ugly. His charisma and attitude made him attractive but didn't make him beautiful. Rock stars are not known for their beauty like actors and models are. Christopher Reeve was tall, dark and handsome. Very WASPy and an old school GQ model. Maybe some nerdiness. I do not find him bland like Henry Cavill or Matt Bomer who barely emote.

by Anonymousreply 90March 24, 2022 5:33 PM

I'm trying very hard to find what is "plain" or "freakish" about him. He looks like a fairy tale prince.

She said that many professional horse riders/jumpers with years and years of experience wouldn't attempt the jump because it was too risky. by Anonymousreply 129March 25, 2022 1:46 AM

I tooooooootalky agree r107. When you think about what it was like in the 70’s on just the drug scene, all kinds of crazy shit went down every single weekend and most late nights too. People *partied*. I think there was a huge cultural explosion after Vietnam, the assassinations, add in the sexual revolution and gay culture and the arts. CR definitely definitely definitely experimented.

by Anonymousreply 130March 25, 2022 1:52 AM

Again the term bisexual seems lost on people. Reeve was upper class, lived in a liberal environment, and was involved in the arts and university life which has a lot of gay and bi people which would make him more open-minded than most. Plus all the anecdotes that claim he was involved with men. Obviously getting cast in Superman made him more vigilant about who to sleep with. The press wasn't going to out him based on past stories. Who'd want to out Superman. Reeve likely just settled into a heterosexual life that was expected of him like many bisexual. Datalounge refuses to accept bisexual men exist. They will claim someone can either be gay or straight. Despite the millions of men who sleep with both men and women.

by Anonymousreply 131March 25, 2022 2:57 AM

Michael Caine was gay.

by Anonymousreply 132March 25, 2022 3:04 AM

He had a pronounced lisp, you'd think it would have been addressed with training at Juilliard. Also, was it true he had alopecia and was propped up with a wig and fake brows, even pre accident. I remember something about his fear of his rug being swept off during one of the Superman sequels.

by Anonymousreply 133March 25, 2022 3:21 AM

[quote] Datalounge refuses to accept bisexual men exist.

Actually, Datalounge refuses to believe straight men exist. According to Datalounge every man likes to get his cock sucked by another man now and then.

by Anonymousreply 134March 25, 2022 3:23 AM

R134, because supposedly you gays really know how to do it right.

by Anonymousreply 135March 25, 2022 3:25 AM

Given there's nothing wrong with being gay and straight people are the majority and hold privileges. I don't see the big deal of speculating sexual orientation especially of people we don't know. He's dead and nobody is harassing him. Also why is it okay to accept that every male celebrity is straight? Bisexual and gay ones exist and we know they are told to keep that part of themselves private. I don't agree with outing people by force but I'm not sure why it's a crime now to assume a famous man is gay or bi. Yes it's wish fulfillment but it's harmless. People like to be offended so easily.

by Anonymousreply 136March 25, 2022 3:29 AM

R104, from what Chris said regarding the tragic accident, that it was one of the easiest jumps . Something caused the horse to stop abruptly and Reeve’s hands were wrapped around the saddle reigns and he couldn’t break his fall with arms . His head to the brunt and severed his spinal cord . If his hands were free, he would have had a broken arm or wrist

by Anonymousreply 137March 25, 2022 3:41 AM

He was really terrific as Superman, giving a sly comic performance.

by Anonymousreply 138March 25, 2022 3:42 AM

R136 99 percent of celebs are gay. That even extends into athletics. The need to compensate is strong. An ordinary black is a nobody but a black celebrity is treated as human. I would even guess that most war heroes are gay. With social media, it's pretty easy to investigate who is gay.

by Anonymousreply 139March 25, 2022 3:42 AM

Reminder: there is no such thing as bi. Most gays for various reasons go to great lengths to prove that they can have a fake relationship with opposite sex. That does not make them bi.

I saw "A Matter of Gravity" with Katherine Hepburn and Christopher Reeve at the Colonial Theatre on News Year's Eve, December 31, 1975. It was a thrill to see Hepburn on stage. Reeve played Hepburn's nephew and was unknown at the time. Three years later in 1978, Reeve was a star playing the lead in in the first Superman movie.

R47, it's been a long time, but at the time I thought he was getting good reviews for Rear Window because no one wanted to be a heartless bastard. Unfortunately, the accident had compromised him as an actor in ways other than movement. His voice was very limited in power and expressive range. He got a Golden Globe nomination and won a SAG for that film, but I suspect people were rewarding "courage" and "perseverance."

Remaking one of the really good Hitchcocks is perilous even in the best of circumstances, as we saw with Gus van Sant's Psycho the same year. The recent Rebecca on Netflix was another dud. I know that was more a new adaptation of the novel than a remake of the 1940 film, but it didn't compare.

I met him a couple of years before he died. He absolutely, positively believed that between cybernetic implants and nerve regeneration, he'd someday regain at least limited upper-body control & the ability to (sort of) walk (even if it required a robot exoskeleton). I was sad that he ended up dying from something stupid like a respiratory infection (which are actually quite life-threatening if your ability to cough, or even fully control your own breathing, is limited).

by Anonymousreply 155March 25, 2022 5:40 AM

What befell Christopher Reeve was one of the greatest celebrity tragedies. Here he was, this big, athletic, handsome man, only in his forties, wildly in love with his wife and a new father, and boom, in instant he's rendered completely immobile and disabled. He did the best he could to continue his life but it was heartbreaking what happened to him. In his memoir he describes his recovery and his everyday routine as a quadriplegic; it's difficult to read. And he had to deal with it, day to day. It was amazing he lived on for as long as he did.

What a tragedy. When I was a kid, DC Comics ran a contest; you had to buy like 20 comics or more and clip out coupons and mail them in. TWO lucky kids were chosen as winners and they appeared as extras in Superman.

They were high school boys in the football scene, I think.

I wanted to win that contest so badly.

Decades later, I was all grown up, moved to LA and was an extra in Spider-Man 2 (Tobey).

Reeve's wife has little to nothing to do with it. She's dead too and maybe she also was bisexual. Bisexual men and bisexual women are a perfect match. It's the homophobic fraus who are obsessed with Reeve that deny his bisexuality. Just like the fraus who try to say James Dean was straight but being molested made him confused and seek out male lovers as a father. Or the fraus who insist George Michael was really bisexual not just gay. The mental gymnastics are great.

by Anonymousreply 202March 26, 2022 1:59 AM

R202 And why do you give a fuck? People can wish whatever they please. You act like it's a personal attack on Reeve that he could've been bisexual. Maybe he was straight but given gay or bi men have claimed to have slept with him, his bisexuality was possible. And you know damn well most people were not openly bisexual back then. The only solid evidence of him being straight is his marriage. But we know plenty of gay and bi men marry women. So stop trying to ruin the party. I think you're the crazy one with your obsession with Reeve being straight.

That's how Christopher Reeve met her. He saw her sing in a cabaret and apparently fell in love with her at first sight. He said:

"She wore an off the shoulder dress and sang "The Music That Makes Me Dance." Oh, my God. Right then I went down, hook, line and sinker. All my friends who were there saw it happen. Afterwards I went backstage. This was difficult, because whenever I'm really attracted to someone , really knocked out, I can be very clumsy. At the time I was a successful film actor and pretty established. You wouldn't think I'd have a problem with a simple conversation with trying to meet a woman, but I could become very awkward. Playing Clark Kent was no stretch for me."

Well, they did meet and date and end up marrying. Reeves was not inclined to be married; he had a long relationship with a woman that had produced two children. But after getting some therapy where he worked though his fears about marriage he decided that "in very short order, I would be a fool to lose this woman, this relationship. So they married and had a son and were very happy during the time they had together.

"Reeves" is a joke, then? Talk about a lame one.

by Anonymousreply 256March 26, 2022 3:35 PM

In some cases, I think it's a joke, R256. In other cases, it's just ignorance.

by Anonymousreply 257March 26, 2022 3:38 PM

R253 Fields was just ok. Not gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 258March 26, 2022 4:09 PM

This thread is so humorless 🙄. People here bitching on his ugliness, how to spell his last name and how heterosexual he is. Nothing interesting has been revealed.

by Anonymousreply 259March 26, 2022 4:10 PM

R259, what are you looking for, exactly?

by Anonymousreply 260March 26, 2022 4:14 PM

R242, Chris joked about that too

by Anonymousreply 261March 26, 2022 4:43 PM

Dana was a fantastic lady

by Anonymousreply 262March 26, 2022 4:44 PM

Reeves was 100% psychotic/psychopathic like most DLers as he considered the GG's to be real and never stopped fucking talking about a horrible unfunny show that ended thirty years ago. Even after Reeves' accident, the only thing that mattered in his life were the GG's.

by Anonymousreply 263March 26, 2022 5:04 PM

Clearly, R263 sees psychotic/psychopathic when s/he looks in the mirror.....

by Anonymousreply 264March 26, 2022 5:11 PM

Chris Reeves was hot as Superman. He and Kidder were perfect.

by Anonymousreply 265March 26, 2022 5:20 PM

[quote] not inclined to trust what you say if you can't get his name right).

A typo has nothing to do with credibility, you silly thing.

by Anonymousreply 266March 26, 2022 5:29 PM

[quote] Chris had way too many confirmed gay encounters for you to still be in denial.

How were they confirmed? The only one "confirmed" I know of the is the gay porn star who said he fucked him. And that's not a credible source. At any rate, after a good looking male celebrity dies it's inevitable that were be rumors of homosex. It makes for juicy gossip. But that's all it is, gossip. But there are always people who are willing to believe anything.

by Anonymousreply 267March 26, 2022 5:35 PM

[quote] In other cases, it's just ignorance.

I've never seen any ignorance whatsoever demonstrated on DL.

by Anonymousreply 268March 26, 2022 5:42 PM

Going be honest, I met him and he didn't ping for me at all and I was a young gay 20 something and paying attention.

by Anonymousreply 269March 26, 2022 5:45 PM

No, R269, that's just feverish DL wishful thinking.

by Anonymousreply 270March 26, 2022 5:49 PM

R267, it's possible that any or all of those stories about Reeve having gay sex are false, but it's also entirely possible that any or all of them are true. So to discount all of the stories as not credible is as stupid as believing all of them without question. Get it?

by Anonymousreply 271March 26, 2022 5:51 PM

No what R270? What are you babbling about?

by Anonymousreply 272March 26, 2022 5:51 PM

*See what R269 said

Fixed.

by Anonymousreply 274March 26, 2022 5:58 PM

It is easier to name those who lived in the 70s and 80s and never had a same-sex encounter.

by Anonymousreply 275March 26, 2022 6:29 PM

I have it on solid authority that Chris, JFK, Jr. & Jon-Erik Hexum enjoyed threesomes together on a regular basis.

by Anonymousreply 276March 26, 2022 6:47 PM

R269, Was he already in the chair?

by Anonymousreply 277March 26, 2022 6:58 PM

R276, lol.

Nevertheless, I’m pretty sure about Reeves- he and that other 70s heart throb (Richard G.) both dated a number of guys I knew pretty well in the 70s- all these guys were models (and all are deceased) and I assume Chris and Richard met them/knew them in that context. Both these guys are pretty high on my probably bi or gay meter. One or two I know of because I dated them!

by Anonymousreply 278March 26, 2022 6:59 PM

R267, There were numerous gay rumors about him long before his accident.

by Anonymousreply 279March 26, 2022 7:00 PM

Sure, Jan R278.

by Anonymousreply 280March 26, 2022 7:08 PM

Chris never went the "guest star on TV shows" route early in his career. I wonder why not. He was never on Barnaby Jones, Charlie's Angels, Quincy, The Waltons, Family, Cannon, The Streets of San Francisco, etc.

by Anonymousreply 311March 30, 2022 12:44 AM

Christopher Reeves couldn't really act and never appeared in anything memorable except those first generation Superman movies.

by Anonymousreply 312March 30, 2022 12:45 AM

R312 Not true. He acted well in Somewhere in Time, The Bostonians, Noises Off, and The Remains of the Day.

by Anonymousreply 313March 30, 2022 12:49 AM

None of those shows are known, R313. Or were they made for TV movies?

by Anonymousreply 315March 30, 2022 12:55 AM

I only ever knew Chris Reeves for Superman. Have no idea what else he starred in after being in the chair. Found it hilarious that he wanted Richard Geres part in Pretty Woman.

R314

Somewhere in Time is a film based on the novel Bid time Return by Richard Matheson. It was directed by Jeannot Szwarc, music by John Barry, and starred Reeve, Jane Seymour, Teresa Wright, and Christopher Plummer.

The Bostonians is a Merchant-Ivory film based on the classic Henry James novel. It stars Reeve, Vanessa Redgrave, Madeleine Potter, Linda Hunt, Wesley Addy, Nancy Marchand, Wallace Shawn, and Jessica Tandy. It was nominated for two Academy Awards.

Noises Off is a hilarious comedy starring Reeve, Michael Caine, Carol Burnett, John Ritter, Julie Hagerty, Nicolette Sheridan, Marilu Henner, and Denholm Elliott.

The Remains of the Day is a Merchant Ivory film based on Kazuo Ishiguro's Pulitzer Prize winning novel. It starred Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, James Fox, Hugh Grant, Peter Vaughn, Tim Piggot-Smith, Michael Lonsdale, and Reeve. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards.

by Anonymousreply 324March 30, 2022 2:39 AM

R310. Reeve was divinely inspired in this interview. He became a Superman who was unable to move , but he had the passion

by Anonymousreply 325March 30, 2022 2:48 AM

R18, I would very much enjoy watching you die in a grease fire. And I'd use my cell phone to make a video of your gruesome death, so I could watch it over and over again.

Followed Patti LuPone's class at Juillard. Ran into her at the airport, a flight had been cancelled, and if she didn't get on the one remaining flight, she would miss her Evita audition.

She was being told no at the ticket counter. She ran into Chris, and burst into tears. He pulled some SUPER stings, and got her on the flight.

by Anonymousreply 327March 30, 2022 4:19 AM

Save his terrible accident, he remains unknown. I've never heard of any of those movies except Noises Off - which was definitely NOT hilarious or successful, R324.

Remains of The Day is not a Christopher Reeves movie. He had a small part in which he didn't shine.

Did Reeves always play secondary roles in ensemble films? He was cast as a type I imagine. A Moore's 2 for 1 suit sale model, or an almost handsome but somewhat weak man with a bad nose job. A bad beak.

by Anonymousreply 328March 30, 2022 5:52 AM

I think he really WANTED to be a great actor. He wanted to be seen that way. I'm not sure he ever quite made it though. I mean, he was a movie star and all. He looked like be belonged up there on screen. But he never wowed me in anything.

Maybe he was better on stage. Kate Hupburn must've seen something in him, right? And he made it to John Houseman's prestigious The Acting Company at Juilliard.

Remember that awful Switching Channels with Burt Reynolds, Kathleen Turner, and Chris Reeve? Turner's agent must've really sucked. She was solid A list at the time, and Reeve and Reynolds had both slipped to B list at best. From then on, her career took a steep nosedive.

by Anonymousreply 331March 30, 2022 10:42 AM

Correction War of the Rose's was a successful A list project after 1987's Switching Channels. But subsequent that, Turner's career seemed to fall pretty fast.

Christopher Reeve was not a true movie star.

by Anonymousreply 334March 30, 2022 10:48 AM

Only one mean, old and insane poster calls people unhinged, R329. You.

Nothing about my posts or opinion is unhinged. I was born in 1983. Chris Reeves was probably dead before I turned twenty. Noises Off was a terrible bad film with raisins in it. My dude wanted me to see it. We turned it off and fucked. That's the only reason I remember it. All that fake farce and terrible everything behind the scenes mess. WOW bad. You'd have to be unhinged to like it. Was Christopher Reeves even in it? Maybe he was the sandwich. Or the salad. Or the sardines.

When was the last decade R329 had the option to turn it off and fuck? 1974 is my guess.

Does he realize how ancient and gay and white he sounds. All day and everyday? Yikes.

by Anonymousreply 335March 30, 2022 10:50 AM

R327 Just shows how super Reeves really is. Chris Reeves is the man.

by Anonymousreply 336March 30, 2022 11:58 AM

R328, why don't you tell us what your last name is, so we can keep adding an "s" to it in a desperate, failed attempt to be amusing? Or is it, rather, a very successful attempt to be purposely annoying?

P.S. "Unhinged" is an understatement in your case, fucker.

by Anonymousreply 337March 30, 2022 1:39 PM

DL threads about movies and movie actors *always* attract one or two persistent posters who insist that certain actors or movies aren't worth even discussing because they've never heard of them or didn't like them. They create factitious standards and crude dichotomies of "great" versus "unknown," and keep trying to derail any more nuanced or informed conversation. Best to ignore them as the trolls they are.

by Anonymousreply 338March 30, 2022 1:57 PM

R328 Noises Off is the weakest movie out of the others. Interesting you have never heard of The Remains of the Day. It is one of the "big three" Merchant Ivory films, like a Room with a View and Howard's End. The book by Kazuo Ishiguro is phenomenal, too. Please give it a watch at least once.

R328 and R331 You are right. The only "Christopher Reeve Movie" is Superman. Was he a great actor? Probably not. Did I enjoy his performances? Yes.

His besting acting is in The Bostonians. Please give it a watch.

R339 yes, I like him. I liked the first two Superman movies, and THAT role he fit perfectly.

He's perfectly adequate in Deathtrap, the gay kiss is neat. And in Somewhere in Time he's awfully attractive, and Jane Seymour is beautiful. But yeah he never had a WOW performance.

R343, how are you allowed to access social media from a loony bin? Of course, the TV movie I linked to doesn't "glorify" pedophilia. Quite the opposite -- at the end of the movie (SPOILER ALERT), when Chris Reeve's character is finally caught, he jumps out a window and ends up as a bloody pulp on a sidewalk. Is that something you can relate to?

I met Reeve in 1985 at a Sunday matinee of “As Is” at Circle Rep in the Village. Since the mostly subscription audience was older people, he and I were roughly the only younger ones there. I complimented him on his work in “Fifth of July” and the movie, “Somewhere in Time.” He was diffident and friendly. We met again after the play, and went our separate ways. Curiously, I encountered him again in Sheridan Square about an hour later. We joked about “Small world,” etc. as I walked on, I looked back, and saw him looking back at me.

Implications?

Mediocre actor, marginal talent, not really that good looking. Highly romanticized career and legacy wise due to his accident and death. If he didnt have the accident and were still alive, he would be irrelevant.

by Anonymousreply 358August 13, 2022 10:10 PM

He wouldn't have completely irrelevant. He's still the first feature length Superman and defined the character for decades including the comics, TV shows and movies. Maybe his career would have dried up but he would have been highly regarded as the OG along with Steve Reeves just like Adam West and Michael Keaton are for Batman.

R364- He had NO sex appeal just like Matt Bomer.

by Anonymousreply 365August 13, 2022 11:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 366August 14, 2022 12:09 AM

Christopher Reeve and Lynda Carter both looked exactly like Superman and Wonder Woman should look, it was like they jumped right out of the comic books. And aside from their looks, what was so appealing about both of them was that they played their respective characters as regular people who just happened to have superhuman abilities.

by Anonymousreply 367August 14, 2022 12:13 AM

Great observation. In contrast, Hack Snyder portrayed every character, even the fucking 70 year old janitor, as a fucking GOD. Hack has said that he always thought of each "superhero" as a GOD. And that is exactly why all his fucking movies suck. You cannot draw every useless/worthless fucking turd as a GOD.
