HBO Max is releasing a competing series called [italic]Love and Death,[/italic] starring Elizabeth Olsen as Candy Montgomery, Lily Rabe as Betty Gore, and Jesse Plemons as Allan Gore.

I wonder why the double retelling of this story now? Curious.
There was a very good movie about this murder, circa 1990: “A Killing In A Small Town”. With Barbara Hershey, Brian Dennehy, Richard Gilliland. Very creepy, disturbing but excellent movie.

Jessica Biel is an anti-vaxxer idiot married to a sniveling weasel.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 18, 2022 9:11 AM |
Biel and Olson probably signed on for those mini-series because the material is Emmy nomination bait.
I remember watching the Barbara Hershey movie a bunch of times when Lifetime and LMN used to reair TV movies from the 80s and 90s.

Is she still producing that Sinner show?

I'm wondering about that too. HBO Max and Hulu having competing limited series shows kind of reminds me of how broadcast networks used to compete with TV movies on true crime cases back in the 90s like with the Amy Fisher and the Menendez brothers cases. Outside of murder stories, I remember when two networks each released TV movies on the Gregory K case, the kid who divorced his parents in order to be adopted by his foster parents.
I remember A Killing in a Small Town being so fucking creepy. Barbara Hershey plays psychos quite well. I think the Candy Montgomery case is probably seen as good true crime material for a miniseries these days. People always love shocking gruesome crimes. There have been other true crime cases revisited multiple times in TV shows and films . Even after the two Menendez brothers movies in the 90s, Lifetime released a movie sometime around the time NBC had that Law and Order True Crime: Menendez Bros series back in 2017. The Chippendales Murder case was featured in two movies years ago and Hulu is coming out with limited series on the case. There was the podcast and the Discovery plus docuseries on the case which may have reignited interest in the case. I think we are going to see more retellings of true crime cases over the next few years. I wouldn't be surprised if the Charles Stuart case is retold in the form of miniseries.

Candy Montgomery was actually killing in self defense. Betty Gore discovered her husband was sleeping with Candy. She lured Candy into her home where she had an axe hidden in the laundry room. Candy managed to overpower Betty and chopped her to bits.

Melanie Lynskey was a good casting for Betty Gore.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 19, 2022 6:38 AM |
I remember the Hershey movie. Really intense. Not sure if I want to revisit anything like that.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 19, 2022 7:13 AM |
With a mini-series, they might not show much of the killing of Betty Gore. It will be interesting the narrative styles Hulu and HBO Max will use for each series. I could see one possibility being one of the shows starts off with the killing and then flashes back to the events that led up to it.
Jessica Biel in the Hulu show does have the edge for how she looks as Candy. Elizabeth Olsen doesn't really look late 70s/early 80s Texas frau in the pics released by HBO.

The fact that she was acquitted was batshit insane. Her story was not remotely believable but I guess that's the American justice system for you. Either hammer defendants with over the top sentences or let someone go free because they look wholesome.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 20, 2022 4:10 PM |
So is Candy still alive? It's crazy when you read about it because it's hard to believe the husband wasn't involved. He kept insisiting that the neighbors break into the house because his wife wouldn't answer the phone? I guess he didn't want the baby in the crib to die of starvation.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 20, 2022 4:16 PM |
Didn't she complain about not getting roles because she's too good looking? So she's uglied up to get some credibility? lol Bitch, please.
I think Jessica Biel is a talented actress. Said no one ever.
I might check out the other one - if only for Jesse Plemons.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 20, 2022 4:24 PM |
Yeah, I know, but I like Jesse Plemons is kinda hot.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 20, 2022 4:26 PM |
Jesse Plemons is the main reason I'll probably watch the HBO series. I wonder why Olsen wasn't uglied up for the Candy role.

Jessica Biel is so mannequin-ish now. She has the Stepford wife smile going. I would too if I had to deal with an obnoxious old Southern bitch queen like Justin Timberlake who is chasing pussy and dick nonstop. I'm sure she has her girlfriend on the side to console her, plus she is spending that SexyBack money given no one is watching 7th Heaven anymore, so the residuals aren't going.
I didn't think she could ever act when she tried to be Hollywood in the mid-2000s. But maybe she improved, I will give her new shows a try. Also, she was stunning in her teen years (I can't believe she was only 13 or 14 when 7th Heaven began filming and Beverly Mitchell was two years older than her). Her character Mary was likable and had that pretty tomboy butch look to her. I find that whole show weird, the writers seemed to like putting that incest undertone between Mary and Matt (like were they inspired by The Brady Bunch?) but I always felt Mary, Matt and Ruthie were adopted kids. So maybe not related.

It's all Stephen's fault. I'm surprised Jessica isn't part of a superhero franchise.

Well apparently Mary and Matt were supposed to kiss in the Pilot but the scene got cut. Simon ended up being my fave since everyone else ended up being an asshole. And i'm sure if 7th Heaven got a reboot Mary would be lesbian or bi.

The series is going to be released over a 5 day event. Kind of has that old TV miniseries event type vibe, but just with a different format via streaming. It would be hilarious if Jessica Biel got an Emmy nomination and shoved out Viola Crybaby Davis out of the running for best actress limited series category.

I’ll wait until DL reviews the series before I decide to watch or not. I’m just not into dark shit anymore.
The one positive thing I can say about Jessica’s screen presence is that she was in a movie with Kate Beckensale and was the best thing about it.

God bless DL eldergays: "There was a tv movie about this decades ago, why don't people just watch that?"
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 12, 2022 3:50 PM |
Jessica is riding the Sinner train. She had some pretty decent success with the first season, produced Cruel Summer and is now playing the lead in Candy. But, in her case, it works.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 12, 2022 3:55 PM |
By her own accounting, Candy went over to Betty's house without telling her she was coming. I find it impossible to believe that when she saw Candy on her doorstep, Betty suddenly concocted a plan to get Candy to come into the laundry room so she could chop her up.
It seems more likely to me that Betty's husband Allan (who remarried two months after Betty was killed! Before the trial, even) somehow talked Candy into killing Betty "so they could be together." But Candy didn't know Allan already had Wife #2 waiting in the wings.
After the murder, Allan remarried and moved to California, dumping his two young daughters with their grandparents in Kansas because the stepmother hated them. Nice fella.

R21 Aren’t you sweet. My point was that the older movie makes an interesting comparison to the current. And it is odd that after decades there are suddenly 2 remakes at the same time. I simply found it curious, nothing more.

I don't rate the physical transformation as miraculous as anyone would look like shit in those glasses with hair like that. Some goofy or evil expressions are all Jessica really brings in
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 13, 2022 12:25 PM |
For what it’s worth People magazine gave her performance a good review.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 13, 2022 1:03 PM |
At the end of the trial, a jury comprised of three men and nine women ruled she was not guilty of murder. Candy and her husband, Pat, reportedly left Wylie and moved to Georgia. The two eventually divorced, according to outlets. Today, Candy is said to still live in the southern state where she now goes by her maiden name, Wheeler. It’s also believed that she now works as a mental health counselor or a therapist.

Yes she did. I have never liked her because of this. Mediocre actresses love to use this as an excuse when they cannot find decent work. As if women who are more gorgeous than they are aren’t having success. Margot Robbie and Charlize Theron have always done well.

It's definitely weird that now there are three TV series about one woman. Two running concurrently is weirder still.

Hershey won an Emmy for A Killing in a Small Town. It would be interesting if either Biel or Olsen wins too.

This was almost a black comedy, it wasn't as serious as the 1990 tv movie.

I did laugh when she asked where her friend was and her husband said something like "probably trying to keep her husband away from you".

I have never considered Jessica Biel to be a serious actress, but I thought she was quite good. I didn't realize she was capable of something like this. Melanie Lynskey was great as usual.
