Why did the Oscars neglect 6-time nominee Deborah Kerr?

Only Glenn Close has beaten her in nominations now without ever being awarded.

They didn't neglect her, she got an honorary Oscar in the 1990s. Try starting a different thread that is more interesting than this.

They shouldn’t have, OP. She deserved it several times. Especially instead of Liz in Butterfield 8.

I never understood why they awarded Liz just because she nearly died. Did the Academy forget that she was also a homewrecker?

I guess they felt since they forgave Ingrid Bergman they could forgive Liz but it does seem odd considering how when the Liz/Fisher scandal first happened and Liz was nominated, Debbie Reynolds boycotted the Oscars out of protest.

R1 Clearly you exhibit the same mentality that Oscar voters had towards Deborah Kerr hence why she never won.

Glenn Close will also receive an honorary Oscar when she's in her 80s. All she needs to do is not die between now and then.

by Anonymousreply 5March 18, 2022 4:16 AM

I believe it was Glenn Close who presented Deborah Kerr with her honorary Oscar.

R6 Yes, Deborah and Glenn with the Oscar.

All Oscars should just be honorary and recognise contribution and body of work. Would sort out the real talent from the flash in the pans.

Glenn is 75 today, so that's sooner than you think.

Deborah Kerr was a British fishwife who looked like she just came in from hanging out the washing. Her role as a sexpot in From Here To Eternity made the character laughable.

I liked her best in Bonjour Tristesse where she played opposite David Niven giving his typical British Silly Ass performance.....

Glenn Close approaches all of her roles with way too much intensity. No wonder she was cast as Alex.

R3 Taylor was smack dab in the middle of her popularity in 1961, plus coming off three consecutive Oscar nominations. And winning on the fourth for Butterfield. I think when she almost died, voters just saw her in a new light. Taylor wasn’t the only homewrecker and cheater in Hollywood by far.

As for Kerr, she was never the front runner. She may have came closest to winning in 1956 or 1957, but never that close to upset Bergman or Woodward. Even in 1961, MacLaine probably came in second and Kerr maybe third.

She should have at least won for The Innocents.

by Anonymousreply 13March 19, 2022 4:17 PM

Obviously, she didn't suck enough cock.
