The final scene will have the gay and jock reunited in front of everyone in school ( during school dance or some performance in the hall ).

He also will apologize with the femme and hag for choosing a dick over friendship. The 3 of them drive and laugh into the sunset.

It's based on a webcomic/graphic novel series and it's genuinely great. I've read a lot of YA junk that I nonetheless love but this is definitely a step above. It's developed a very passionate fanbase beyond just the teenage straight girls who normally go for the boy-on-boy stuff. I highly recommend reading it - it's all online free, I've linked below. I love it and I think the series looks fantastic.

And for the record, the main couple is gay boy/bi boy; the two secondary couples are interracial lesbian and straight boy/trans girl. But nobody makes a big deal out of the trans-ness, it just it what it is. It's the anti-"Euphoria" where there's really nothing controversial outside of the fact that the romances are queer.

Oh and r26, while I can think of at least a half dozen YA titles with basically that plot I'm pleased to say that this one is not one of them!

If I was a teenager, I don't think I'd watch this because the guys wouldn't be hot enough for me. But the actors here aren't visually appealing. Luckily I was able to watch Dante's Cove, Noah's Arc and Queer as Folk online as a teen which had really attractive guys in it.

I just binged-watched it. It wasn't as good as Handsome Devil or Love, Simon but it was good. It was nice to witness articulate discussions and a mature approach to being gay and/or bisexual. There were no sex scenes, no nudity, no drugs, no cursing, no teens hating their parents, etc., which was refreshing, but did any of the kids work?

That said, I'm in love with Kit Connor. However, I was disturbed by Joe Locke's missing teeth on the side. Can we have that fixed before a second season arrives?

I’m about halfway through. It’s very sweet. My best friend’s son is newly out, and he and his friend group (age 14-16) are obsessed with the comic. I’m happy kids have comics and shows today that represent them. I wish I’d had something like that growing up as a teen in the 80s! It’s okay that it’s “tame”…not every teen show has to be Euphoria.

My only problem is the god awful twee music. I had to turn on the subtitles to understand some of the dialogue—wish there was a “remove soundtrack” option.

I watched all 8 episodes, twice, two nights in a row.

I was impressed with the maturity and consideration of some of the characters, who seemed to understand the importance of keeping the confidentiality of someone's sexual orientation if that person didn't want it known (or hadn't quite figured it out yet).

It was also funny to see Olivia Colman, who played Queen Elizabeth, playing Nick's mother. She didn't look glamorous at all.

It seems this show is successful. Hopefully that will lead way to more non-cliche gay-themed shows. Most reality shows and dating shows all had gay episodes and most teen shows and movies and most sitcoms and soap operas had a token gay character. Some of my favorite gay movies like Totally Fucked Up, Edge of Seventeen, Moonlight, Get Real, My Own Private Idaho etc ended in heartbreak or death.

I’m highschool in Indiana in 2002-2006, a romance such as this would have been forbidden and therefore I never had anything like it.

Charlie Spring is only 14 at the start of the show and turns 15 in the later episodes. My nephew was watching and really enjoying it. He is recently turned 15. We were laughing at how awful the rugby scenes were. The school scenes are spot on except for the kids being allowed in the school building alone after school he said. He reads the comic books too. I do think current 15 year olds behave differently to when I was 15. They seem an all round more innocent/naïve bunch in many ways while being far more socially aware in others.

I think this is one of the reasons the camera panned to the trees during the sex scene. And before that, in the supply closet, Felix and Victor complained to one another about the lack of privacy, and Victor said something like, " We've done everything else, a lot of really good everything else, but we haven't had sex." You can't have a story about two people crushing on one another, hot for one another and expect chaste kissing. Somebody has to get hard, somebody has to ejaculate. My favorite gay comic character is Wallace from Scott Pilgrim. He's the confident and intelligent best friend to awkward straight boy Scott. The show, oddly, is all about gay (add the letters that don't offend you) kids trying to figure it out, having attractions, getting hurt, confused... so they are thoroughly not straight, but they are JUST KIDS like any other kids. I don't think only Gen Z gets it per se. Many Millennials grew up gay and had no issue if they grew up in a urban, liberal area and had open-minded family members. Being gay was not seen as universally bad by the 90s and 2000s. The amount of sympathy that Matthew Shepard got and plus the push to reduce HIV stigma and gay teen suicide in the 2000s. I think it's mainly Boomers and older Xers who suffered a lot in their childhoood and thus need to project that trauma onto younger generations and have some resentment to how much easier they have it. Being gay today is more of a personal struggle than a threat to one's life and safety. Though discrimination and hate crimes still exist, they are universally condemned by the public now as opposed to the 60s, 70s and 80s when people had to be closeted for their safety.

I’ve been reading the Heartstopper webcomic for a couple of years now, and just watched the series again.

I have a 22-year-old (who was an English nerd involved in band, musical theatre, and art), and have worked in high schools for the past twelve years. The milkshake date, the seemingly asexual stuff, the constant checking-in re consent… that’s really how this generation seems to operate!

I was a smart English lit nerd, too, but because it was pre-internet days I hung out with people who were, frankly, beneath me, and I got into all sorts of trouble because I never thought I could do better.

My public library has the ebooks of the graphic novels. I borrowed them and read them all last night. It definitely gets into some deeper topics. The Netflix series is pretty faithful to the books. Issac is not in the books, instead, the 3rd guy friend is Aled, who also has been experimenting with guys. Not sure why they swapped them out. I barely recall seeing Charlie’s mom on the tv version; she’s in the books more, as well as his little brother.

It would have been impossible to explain all that was Aled, doing justice to his character, and have him interact with the other characters in the time they were given, thus Isaac.

Oliver (the little brother) is wonderful in the books, but I think it would be messy on screen. They had limited time/episodes to tell a story, so it had to be pared-down; the same with Charlie’s anorexia/OCD… the anorexia was hinted-at, but we’ll see what happens if there’s another series…(same with Charlie’s mum. I fucking hate her in the comic, but in the backstory Alice has made, of her and Julio in Spain, she’s cool, so idk!)

My brother's teeth were so fucked up crooked and his jaw rather small that the only way they'd be able to get his front teeth to straighten is by removing two molars to give more room for his teeth to correct with braces.
