James Garner Appreciation Thread
He's come up a few times in recent days--in the Theatre Gossip thread discussion of Victor/Victoria, and in the William Hurt thread as an Oscar nominee in '85--and he really deserves a thread of his own. Incredibly handsome, an underrated actor, and by all accounts a good man.
Any other fans? Share your appreciation here!

The Le Jazz Hot number in Victor/Victoria is fun, but the shots of him the audience looking beautiful while watching her only make it better.

Really known as a TV star, with two big hits, Maverick and Rockford Files. His big film was The Great Escape, but I remember him partnered with Doris Day in a pretty good comedy.

I own a vintage clothing store and have big framed photos of celebs on the walls, one of which is James Garner from The Great Escape. One day a woman asked if she could take a pic of it (I said of course) and she told me his daughter is her best friend. I asked about him and she said he was the kindest man she’d ever met and a good Democrat.
His autobiography is wonderful and he’s sexy as Hell in The Thrill of It All.

Great guy and handsome. And yet I never warmed to him, he never had the presence of a star for me, and I always felt he lacked sex appeal despite his good looks.
Until I saw him in an absolutely terrible movie with Debbie Reynolds recently called “How Sweet It Is,” and there was one scene where Garner was wearing a very snug, clingy pair of light gray slacks, and his ass and thighs looked mouth-watering. That was the first time I found him carnal, because mostly he just seemed too nice to be sexy, he lacked a streak of masculine ruthlessness in the sack that Sean Connery or Rod Taylor seemed to have.

He was very depressive in his private life. I thought that was so sad for someone who seemingly had it all. I think the blind item R49 is referring to is this one from July 2018. It was a Reader Blind, that Enty put up:
[quote] Reader Blind Item: This late A list actor who was successful in both movies, where he was mostly in light romantic comedies and action films, and TV had one of the most successful long lived maybe the most most successful long lived lavender marriage of all time. It was an arrangement that worked - He took care of his wife and her daughter from another relationship, she gave him cover and didn't mind his relationships with men. She didn't even mind when during his popular detective TV show, he moved in with a boyfriend for a couple of years. James Garner (Lois Josephine Fleischman Clark)
And Wiki notes that during one of his periods of separation from his wife, Garner did have his own house out in The Valley where that Slut Brooke Logan is from.

I moved to LA in the 90's and when I went on my first job interview, exiting the office building was James Garner. Having grown up watching him on Maverick and later, the Rockford Files, he took my breath away. Still handsome as hell. I'm guessing my noticing him with a smile on my face garnered (see what I did there) a handsome smile from him. He smiled and nodded.

Re the post claiming Rockford was belligerent on the set of Rockford files, Stuart Margolin who actually worked with him would disagree. Also the studio was putting tremendous pressure on Garner, cancelled the show when his doctor ordered rest, and was sued by Garner, charging Universal with "breach of contract; failure to deal in good faith and fairly; and fraud and deceit"
Stuart Margolin (who played Angel Martin in The Rockford Files) said that despite Garner's health problems in the later years of The Rockford Files, he would often work long shifts, unusual for a starring actor, staying to do off-camera lines with other actors, doing his own stunts despite his knee problems.[57] When Garner later made The Rockford Files television movies, he said that 22 people (with the exception of series co-star Beery, who died late in 1994) came out of retirement to participate.
