My fiance and I want to visit the Carribean in April. We went to Puerto Vallarta recently and weren't too impressed. We would like to swim in blue water, and experience white sand beaches. We're considering the Bahamas or Antigua, though friends insist the Dominican Republic is cheaper and just as nice. I've been to Aruba and loved the beaches there but we'd like to try something new. Tips and experience are much appreciated.
What's Your Favourite Carribean Destination?

Also, one friend who has a condo in Los Cabos says it's absolutely gorgeous so we might go there instead. Anyone ever been, thoughts?

Anywhere but Jamaica. Yuck.

St barths has nice beaches. USVIi has some nice spots too. Crazy existence compared to PR or DR though.
Agree on PV - it’s a trashy city. The gay nightlife is the only attraction. Not sure why it’s become such a hot destination for gays. But then so is Wilton Manors - so I think gays have given up on finding the hot spots.

It’s Caribbean, loser.

More, please.

Martinique is nice. Real Frenchy.

Puerto Rico. Jaw droppingly handsome guys with FAT asses. Beautiful weather. No passport needed. And the least anti-gay area in the Caribbean.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 5, 2022 1:02 AM |
Vieques
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 5, 2022 1:04 AM |
Try Saba it's not over developed and tourity in fact it is unspoiled by all the tourist development and is quite genuine. Great diving but no beaches to speak of but everyone who has ever visited there loves it.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 5, 2022 1:05 AM |
how about the Grenadines?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 5, 2022 1:15 AM |
Curaçao is great, not overrun by tacky Americans or Brits but an odd mix of Dutch and Venezuelans (well, pre-economic collapse, anyway).
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 5, 2022 1:32 AM |
Dominica. Most beautiful island. ❤
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 5, 2022 1:47 AM |
Dominica was fucked in the hurricane and is still recovering.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 5, 2022 1:47 AM |
St. Lucia is the most beautiful place imaginable. One side of the island has black sand beaches, and the other has white sand.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 5, 2022 2:26 AM |
Sorry, Turks and Caicos beats them all. Grace Bay is the most beautiful beach. It’s $$$ but there are hotels for different budgets. I got married there on the beach. A special place
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 5, 2022 2:34 AM |
Also we loved Vieques but also still recovering. Someone has bought the W Hotel there so it should be amazing when finished
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 5, 2022 2:35 AM |
[R5] is right, Anguilla is the best. Here's a link to a small villa I've rented four times in 15 years and still absolutely love.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 5, 2022 2:58 AM |
technically not in the Caribbean, but Harbor Island in the Bahamas is a great place to go for a couple...quiet, one of the best beaches ever, very few crowds...I have been there 3 times and it was perfect
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 5, 2022 3:12 AM |
The British Virgin Islands are also beautiful. Isla Mujeres has some gorgeous beaches, Playa Norte is glorious.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 5, 2022 3:18 AM |
Anyone going to PV for white sandy beaches and clear blue water clearly didn't do their homework.
The water and the beach are secondary there - it's a CITY - with OK beaches, but great winter weather, good food, walkable, and great nightlife.
And almost all of the Caribbean are homophobic or are tiny islands with nothing more to offer than snorkeling.
Caribbean sucks.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 5, 2022 3:29 AM |
R23 thinks Mexico is gay rights central lol
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 5, 2022 3:35 AM |
R24 - Yes - they have gay marriage, gay adoption, and anti-discrimination laws. The vast majority of Caribbean islands have none of that - and even 9 of the 12 major islands make it ILLEGAL and up to a 10 year sentence for gay sex.
So in comparison, yes dumbass, I think it is.

Hey, stupid OP, Puerto Vallarta is on the Pacific Ocean.

Anguilla.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 5, 2022 4:01 AM |
I second Curaçao. Not homophobic, gorgeous beaches on the west side of the island, interesting architecture in Williamstaad, and lovely people.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 5, 2022 4:12 AM |
Wrong, r25! The real world is not the poppers of your hopes and dreams in PV! Lol dumbass
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 5, 2022 4:17 AM |
And R30 thinks he just slayed, while the rest of us are shaking our heads and staring at his gaped mouth.
You're a fool. And Puerto Rico is a dump.

Tobago

I do like a bit of nightlife and shopping, which is why we're leaning towards Aruba... Turks & Caicos looks beautiful but what nightlife is there?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 7, 2022 12:52 AM |
Belize is incredibly laid-back and rustic. If you're into that sort of thing, there is cheap coke everywhere.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 7, 2022 1:03 AM |
Not exactly the Caribbean but Cancun and the area has some of the prettiest beaches anywhere.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 7, 2022 1:07 AM |
Puerto Rico, my heart’s devotion!

R36 do you mean Riviera Maya? Then yes, agreed.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 7, 2022 2:12 AM |
Oh dear, I suggested Harbor Island...please don't go if your idea of fun is Aruba...next you'll tell us last year's trip was to Disney World.

Curaçao. Surprised that it’s so beautiful there. Nicer than Aruba, which is pretty much a desert.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 7, 2022 2:58 AM |
St Kitts and/or Nevis
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 7, 2022 3:57 PM |
I’ve been to several Caribbean islands and they’re all pretty much the same- boring. Beautiful beaches to relax for a few days, but not much else to offer. Mexico has better food and more culture. You can do your beach thing in Riviera Maya and then explore some great Mexican cities. I think the best bet would be to go to Hawaii. The beaches there are much more beautiful than anything you can find in the Caribbean or Mexico and there are better restaurants and a gay scene.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 7, 2022 4:06 PM |
Aruba and Curaçao are basically first-world countries.

Trinidad and Tobago
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 7, 2022 6:59 PM |
Mostly agree with R145, but if you're on the east coast, Hawaii takes *forever* to get to. I did enjoy the colonial architecture in Curaçao (Dutch) and St Croix, USVI (Danish).

It's good that you're doing some homework before booking, OP. There are some dreadful places in the Caribbean.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 7, 2022 11:22 PM |
though if you want to try something new (be it you haven't done it before)
there are several commercial (yes, you pay to) volunteer / worker tours (though, sometimes you're better off just finding a local cause and volunteering directly)
it often gets condemned as virtue signaling tourism but same people will bitch when you do nothing at all.
There are a few programs that travel through multiple places but often those are over a period of months -- the benefits of the commercial (albeit, yes, you need to search how they operate) is often they mix traditional vacation aspects with volunteerism.. so, you'll spend a few days volunteering, have a few days of local tours and time to head to beach
the per week / day programs can seem frivolous, not enough time to do really make an impact or do anything, but help is always needed. somebody taking out the trash frees up space for a day, frees up others to invest their skills where more needed, etc.
standard vacation - again, group tour and guided retreat programs have their benefits. there's many activity centered programs (like multi-destination bicycle tours, a few motorbike ones, too) - both short term and long term.
ecotours. medical tourism, holistic new age quackery, excuses to get naked and connect with the old age, etc.
and of course, many more casual cultural exchanges, though often even just among other expats, nomads and tourists. -- you want to be able to visit and maximize your budget? then try asking remote worker travellers.

Cap-Haitien, Haiti. I was there in 2019, as a tourist. Loved it, very scenic coast and mountains.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 8, 2022 1:18 AM |
Thank you, everyone. I think we may be traveling to Los Cabos after all, not the fancy Carribean destination I had planned.
