East Asians tend to have a culture that values being respectful, emotionally reserved/aloof, and hypoverbal. Black American culture tends to be more boisterous, blunt, and verbose. Put both cultures in a room, and misunderstandings are bound to occur on both sides. The East Asian may perceive the Black American as being disrespectful for being "loud" and speaking their mind, whereas the Black American may perceive the East Asian's withdrawn behavior as rude and maybe even a little racist (i.e. "they're being withdrawn and not sociable because I'm Black and they hate me.") Both individuals are wrong, however, this message gets lost in translation (many times literally) and conflicts tend to arise.

This issue is avoided when you have a Black American who is not only very familiar with various East Asian cultures, but actively takes them into consideration during social interactions with East Asians. The same applies for East Asians who are more "relaxed" and conversational with Black Americans in social situations and know how to "speak the lingo." A friend's mentally ill brother has been a transient for many years. This man was born in Pennsylvania, but has been traveling throughout the US for the past 20+ years. Due to his mental illness, he's on disability, somehow he's easily able to access his monthly check when he travels throughout the country. I’m not sure how disability works when a person doesn’t live in one place, but this man manages to get his disability money via a checking account in a major bank.

As long as this man takes his meds, he can function, but my friend still doesn’t want to be around their brother. My friend said, "My brother can snap anytime, I don't care if he claims to be on his meds, I don’t want to be around him. Let him wander the US, as long as he doesn't know where my partner and I live." I do know, at one point, the mentally ill brother tracked down the sister who lives in Brooklyn.

The homeless are now everywhere in NYC. A few years ago, my local shopping hub added benches along the main shopping drag, it’s assumed the benches were for put there for the shoppers who wanted to take a break, but that's not the case. The last time I was in that area, all the benches were taken over by homeless people, with their shopping carts and unwashed smelly bodies. Some homeless were clearly mentally ill, they were yelling at the shoppers who were simply walking down the street.

Yes, the brother was extremely violent. How can you say my friend has abandoned his brother? The brother, who is the oldest, is a transient, if anything, the mentally ill brother has abandoned his siblings and whatever friends he had. The parents passed away many years ago. The brother doesn't stay in one place for very long. For all my friend and his sister know, the brother could be a serial killer. I'm sure there's a lot more to this story than my friend told me.

When their late father was dying at home from cancer, there were several incidents. The mother, who had her own health issues and couldn't deal with her son, being around her and the husband. His mentally illness was too much deal with while both parents were ill. The brother has been on and off his meds for years. Sometimes certain meds stop working.

The mentally ill brother has a lot of money, he's been on disability for years. The brother and sister have not abandoned him. The mentally ill brother doesn't seem to want to stay in one place.

Isn't this what Reagan wanted, to give the mentally ill their autonomy, but we all know it was more about Reagan not wanting the government to cover the mental institution bills. Yet, the brother is getting disability checks every month, guess that's less costly than keeping people in mental hospitals?
