Beautiful men with no talent

They're just a pretty face. That's all they've ever been. That's all they ever will be.

Who are these beautiful, empty lunks of wood?

From the 1960s: John Gavin

David Tag, another actor big on muscles and looks, but lacking thespian skills was also recently killed off. The newer show runners seem to be eliminating the pretty boys who have little skill or depth. Brad Pitt, for me. The man can't act for shit, but his looks made him a movie star giving him the opportunity to star in the best movies surrounded by the best acting talent. I always fall back on the starkest example, 'Seven'. The principals, Freeman, Spacey and, yes, Goop, were clearly in a different class, giving clinics in subtlety while he was hamming it up, only saved by the fact he was at the peak of his physical beauty. But in a fair world, William Bradley Pitt would've gone the way of male models like Mark Vanderloo or Michael Bergin.

Freddie Prinze Jr. I know he had a reputation for being all brawn no brains in his 90s teen era, but having rewatched She’s All That, I was amazed by not only how wooden he is, but how I likeable. R78 Ok neither Prinze is beautiful. But at least one of them had talent and it wasn't Jr.

by Anonymousreply 79March 2, 2022 6:02 PM

Calling Freddie Prinze Jr a nepotism baby is laughable. His dad had a career for about 2 years and blew his brains out 20 years before Jr got a career. Jr is no Olivier, but I busted many nuts to him back in the day. He seems content to be Buffy's househusband.

by Anonymousreply 80March 2, 2022 6:35 PM

Like Jennifer Aniston and George Clooney, FPJ had a door opened to him because of his name. He certainly didn't get it opened for his talent. Even if his hand wasn't held the whole way like Dakota Johnson or Gwyneth Paltrow, his name gave him an edge over competition.

by Anonymousreply 81March 2, 2022 6:37 PM

The nepotism troll is really off the rails. Casting does not care who you are if you can't deliver. It's show BUSINESS. Not a daycare for celeb kids.

by Anonymousreply 82March 2, 2022 6:40 PM

Did anyone in the mid-90s remember Freddie Prinze Sr? I really think it's a stretch saying his long-dead briefly working father was a leg up. Aniston I'll give you, though she can now buy her father multiple times over.

by Anonymousreply 83March 2, 2022 6:41 PM

Anyone could have played the jock in She's All That and Fred in Scooby-Doo. So I don't think he delivered anything distinctive.

Most of them to be honest. Every now and then, you have someone effortlessly likable, charismatic, and talented like Paul Rudd who also happens to be very attractive, but it's rare.

John Ritter was another one. I always thought he was incredibly sexy, but his talent for comedy and the fact that he didn't take himself very seriously made him even more attractive.

I'd say Zac Efron, but he really excels in musicals and comes across well in those. They just don't make many of them and he's forced to do terrible bro comedies and lower tier "dramas" that show off his weak spots.

Reeves is good in Speed, My Own Private Idaho, and Bill and Ted, where he played himself. He wasn't bad in Constantine, either.

by Anonymousreply 133March 4, 2022 11:57 PM

I actually am in the process of majorly reassessing Keanu.

One begins to suspect that, like Marilyn, "Keanu Reeves" is a character he plays.

by Anonymousreply 134March 5, 2022 12:08 AM

Acting is about pretending to be something you're not and being competent at it. So I don't think an actor who is only good as themselves should count as talented.

by Anonymousreply 135March 5, 2022 1:20 AM

R135 Any time an actor is playing any part, they're acting. They're not "being themselves". They have to make lines written on a page sound real and believable, they have to react as the character. They also have to do many technical things you probably don't know anything about. But they're always giving a performance. An actor can play something they're not, or they can play something close to who they are. That's not really relevant. They're always playing a character within a dramatic situation.

by Anonymousreply 136March 5, 2022 2:32 AM

Sean Connery was immensely talented playing himself, even after he could no longer rely on incredible good looks.

He made himself seem likeable.

by Anonymousreply 137March 5, 2022 2:36 AM

Keanu only excels in films where he doesn't speak a lot. I've seen some of his earlier sci-fi films and oh boy...they were soooo bad!!!

by Anonymousreply 138March 5, 2022 4:35 AM

The older I get, the more I realize that simply being attractive and aging well with dignity is a talent all by itself.

The best pretty boy actors are the ones who get into their 30's and come to the conclusion that they won't be pretty forever and go into character acting. A lot of them can surprise and have long careers with some very interesting work.

by Anonymousreply 148March 6, 2022 11:48 AM

But for all those minimally talented yet beautiful actors we'd have no movie industry. Face it, the actual percentage of truly great actors in the movie industry is minuscule. And that percentage is getting smaller and smaller all the time. Back in the day when they had the studio system, actors may have been treated like livestock, at least until they lucked into a role that made the studio a lot of money and made the executives sit up and take notice and pay them good money, but they were well trained by top notch acting coaches. These days we have too many actors who've never studied acting at all. They have to do a scene umpteen times until some director decides they've finally got a performance good enough to print. And many of them become big stars doing it that way. I don't know if that says more about their talent, or the fact that most movie goers have very low expectations. Lots of people couldn't tell a good performance on the screen to save their lives. As long as the actor looks handsome or pretty, they can do no wrong.

Ben was HOT AF in THE TOWN. Why he doesn’t stick to that look, is beyond me. Ever since he got back with JLo, his best lewks are that of a half assed Italian gigolo, who may have the onset of dementia.

Sorry, but I have a soft spot for Pitt. I know, I know. Things didn’t end well with his ex, but I don’t plan on ever marrying the guy, so I can crush away. No harm. No foul.

And yes, I think both men ARE talented, in the right films, with the right directors.

by Anonymousreply 151March 6, 2022 1:50 PM

R149, I agree with pretty much all you wrote, except for the part that most people wouldn’t be able to distinguish a good or even excellent performance, from a bias one.

Good and great acting is what makes anyone from a bus driver to a top film executive walk out of a movie theater with tears in their eyes, or laughing their asses off.

I understand the calculus for executing an perfect to almost perfect film are MANY facets, but in the end, if an actor isn’t very good to excellent in his role, the audience knows. This doesn’t stop them from loving the film. Same with lesser known British films, in America. European film in general, actually. You can get a gang banger from South Crntral to go in hard on an obscure film and cast, if the acting performances are excellent. Which underscores your point about trained actors being superior to untrained actors. Brits are usually very well trained in the dramatic arts. That’s why a gangbanger can really connect with Daniel Day Lewis. Because the best acting is when Daniel Day Lewis disappears and Abraham Lincoln has been waiting to meet you once you get on a time machine to go… back.

Great actors are great for many other reasons, however, don’t think most people don’t know great acting when they see it. They do. But they’re OK with mediocre talent as well, because that’s entertainment. Just entertain us by any means, and we’re happy. That is who we are, regardless of what particular medium of entertainment beseeches us.

The reassessment is because I think he acts the role of Keanu--wooden headed actor. I think he's something else entirely in RL that few know about.

He also knows why he is there--to be Keanu. He takes it unseriously, but still performs it. I think that's interesting.

They're a dime a dozen on Instagram and TikTok. They are handsome -- some indeed are beautiful -- and they have 0% fat on their gym-honed (and steroid-helped) bodies. They shimmy and shake their crotches and butts to clips from old or current songs. They pout, they smile, or they try to look seductive.

They have no other talents.

Here's one. You might quibble with me about his beauty, but you get the picture.

It is becoming more prevalent. Casting directors and producers care now more how many social media followers they have than how much training they've had or what's on their resumes.

Some of the people mentioned in this thread aren't "no talents" though. Merely mediocre and can be good in the right roles.

by Anonymousreply 185March 8, 2022 2:54 PM

I guess there should be another thread for beautiful men with *some* talent.

by Anonymousreply 191March 8, 2022 4:38 PM

Thank you, Miss Cameron.

by Anonymousreply 192March 8, 2022 4:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 214March 10, 2022 9:00 PM

Tom Welling is a great example. He was never the worst actor I'd seen, but he sure didn't bring a lot to the plate besides his perfect face. But what a face it is!

by Anonymousreply 215March 10, 2022 10:14 PM

So far that I know Jamie Dornan has put in 2 very good performances - The Fall and Belfast. Haven't seen him in anything else I recall. I cannot say he has no talent. But I can say he is beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 216March 10, 2022 10:18 PM

I hadn't enjoyed Dornan in much, but he was amusing and funny in that Barb and Star movie. I was surprised by how game he was to make a fool of himself.

That stud Robert Tyler from that awful soap Loving. I'd watch just for him. His "acting" was atrocious, but who cares when you look like that. As a teen gayling, he was my go-to JO fantasy. I use to tape the show, pause the screen when he appeared shirtless, and JO away.

Finn Wittrock is very talented, though. Saw him on stage a few times and he was wonderful. Stage is the real test of someone's talent (or lack thereof) and he passed with flying colors.

by Anonymousreply 241March 11, 2022 5:15 PM

Finn Wittrock was really good on All My Children. But he was too good for soaps. He's definitely a talented guy. I think he dated one of his (female) co-stars from the show.

It's Finn Wolfhard who can't act. But he's cute.

[quote]Joe D'Alessandro was absolutely breathtakingly beautiful but was more wooden than a plank of wood. He managed to have a career beyond Warhol/Morrissey, starring in French and Italian movies throughout the 70s, still bearing it all.

Joe Dallesandro appeared in many mainstream TV series, for some reason he got hired, he sure wasn't getting naked on primetime TV. He appeared in a few episodes of Miami Vice, Matlock and he was a regular during the first season of Wiseguy.

Joe also appeared as the gangster Lucky Luciano in Coppola's The Cotton Club. Last I heard he's managing an apartment building in California with his third wife.

Joe and his oldest son Mike.
