Let’s face it. Nuclear war is coming

Where is the safest place in the states if it happens ?

by Anonymousreply 7February 27, 2022 8:45 PM

OP is correct. I have been having dreams about this. I think it will not be an all-out "end of the world" event, but a tactical burst that will leave some parts of Europe uninhabitable. It will start quickly and end within an hour as countries around the world plead with the countries involved to stop. Then things get very interesting and the world economy tanks.

He's probably yukking it up watching "Two Broke Girls" with with his latest ho girlfriend. I don't know why people think he's sad. So far, aside from some Ukrainians popping off BB guns, everything has gone like clockwork. No one can interfere because Ukraine isn't in NATO. And more occupiers are coming.

And the world will say, "Okay, okay- we know he's a vicious brat. But let's take a deep breath. We'll put him in The Quiet Room to think about what he's done. He has to apologize. And we'll just move on, and we'll pretend it was all just a bad dream. Because we all just have to get along. Now join hands and sing kum-ba-yah".

The only thing is, a nuclear flame-out would take a lot of innocent animals and plant life, too, yet another reason we should be condemned to Hell.

Just a reminder that Alas. Babylon was written when nukes were pretty rudimentary compared to the insane tech they have now. The electro-magnetic charges will render every vehicle utterly useless. Even if you're far enough away to escape the initial blast, the ground tremors would be so intense that your insides would turn into liquid. The entire world will die.

Wouldn't it have been easier for Belarus just to fake a referendum merging with Russia? That's what the president really wants anyway.

by Anonymousreply 49February 27, 2022 11:45 PM

If it happens, we'll only have a few moments' notice, and I wonder of our government will tell us given the panic, hysteria and mayhem we'd have for 8 or 10 minutes depending on where you are in the country, followed by mass death and destruction I don't want to imagine. I, too, hope that I'd be close enough to die instantly. The thought of what I would do if the announcement came haunts me. I don't know; probably collect my husband and dog, and get stoned.

That said, Vlad knows its mutually assured destruction. There won't be time to debate whether or not to launch. That's part of why the nuclear football is within feet of the president at all times. Everything Vlad values would be gone. There is no point .

Even if you survive the blasts, there are other ways nuclear fallout can get you.

by Anonymousreply 57February 28, 2022 12:47 AM

What good is that going to do, R54? Have you read about the bombs Putin has? They liquify your insides.

by Anonymousreply 58February 28, 2022 12:48 AM

R58, I read all about what to do when Trump became president. I have a plan based on my closest major metro area being hit (DC). Given wind patterns and distance, radiation would be my major issue. I would essentially have to stay in the windowless basement without contact to the "surface world" for at least 48 hours-week after the initial blast.

The iodine and potassium help with radiation, they block its absorption in your thyroid.

And this is of course speculative. But it's good to have ANY plan.

(I also don't think he can hit us... but you never know.)

Putin cannot afford to lose. He will take the nuclear option if backed into a corner. If he loses this war, he loses his rule. He loses Russia.

There is no safe place in the event of a nuclear war. Nuclear war cannot be localized.

Read Jonathan Schells The Fate of the Earth.

by Anonymousreply 91February 28, 2022 7:00 AM

Food for thought... @RestonDad · 4h

22 years of Putin grift; over 30 years since last Russian nuclear test. Do ya really think Putin didn't grift on the upkeep of nukes? Seems likely a lot of nuke $ ended up in oligarchs' (now frozen?) bank accounts Less worried about end of life as we know it than in '62 (I was 3)

Unlike Ukraine, the US didn't dispose of its nuclear arsenal.

If I'm not mistaken, at all times, we have nuclear submarines travelling the globe's oceans so we can send them to strike whenever we want to - and definitely if we've taken an incoming nuke, I think the military would be pretty quick to retaliate in order to deter Russia (or whoever it was that bombed us) from sending yet more nukes to our country.

This may even be true if any of our NATO allies were nuked (or allies of any type?)

I'm not in the military, but if that's not the purpose of the damned things, then what is?

If there is a nuclear war, as opposed to a single bomb dropped (by Russia), then our future is going to be like Mad Max and every other post-apocalypse movie.

The bombs will cause EMPs which will fry electronics, food supply lines will be crippled, and there will be wholesale chaos and riots over food and water (which will be largely contaminated).

It could take decades, if even that, for things to return to some semblance of normal, all the while you will be living in squalid conditions and scrambling around like a cockroach to eke out a meagre existence.

Don't be fooled. "Limited" nuclear war doesn't exist. The ONLY way it would be limited is if the sane countries decide NOT to retaliate at all. In which case, we'd all have to bow down to our Russian overlords, like Faux News and many rethugs on their payroll already do.

by Anonymousreply 131February 28, 2022 10:52 PM

No 143 it would take a whole lot of nukes to kill the nation. Chernobyl didn't kill all of Ukraine. And now life is coming back to Chernobyl. wolves and birds and all other life so a nuke war will not kill off everyone or won't kill all of life. life will come back.

by Anonymousreply 145March 1, 2022 1:34 AM

by Anonymousreply 146March 1, 2022 1:37 AM

And it would only take one nuke R143 it would only hurt the region but if they hit us with a nuke we will obliterate Russia. Putin would have to be completely crazy and isolated to do something as crazy as nuking us. He would probably just nuke ukraine. He isn't stupid enough to hit us. His generals would probably stop it anyway.

"it is important to consider the effects of high-yield nuclear explosions on the ozone layer. The nuclear fireball and the air entrained within it are subjected to great heat, followed by relatively rapid cooling. These conditions are ideal for the production of tremendous amounts of nitric oxide from the air. It has been estimated that as much as 5,000 tons of nitric oxide is produced for each megaton of nuclear explosive power.

What would be the effects of nitric oxides driven into the stratosphere by an all-out nuclear war, involving the detonation of 10,000 megatons of explosive force in the northern hemisphere? According to the recent National Academy of Sciences study, the nitric oxide produced by the weapons could reduce the ozone levels in the northern hemisphere by as much as 30 to 70 percent.

To begin with, a depleted ozone layer would reflect back to the earth's surface less heat than would normally be the case, thus causing a drop in temperature--perhaps enough to produce serious effects on agriculture. Other changes, such as increased amounts of dust or different vegetation, might subsequently reverse this drop in temperature--but on the other hand, it might increase it.

Probably more important, life on earth has largely evolved within the protective ozone shield and is presently adapted rather precisely to the amount of solar ultraviolet which does get through. To defend themselves against this low level of ultraviolet, evolved external shielding (feathers, fur, cuticular waxes on fruit), internal shielding (melanin pigment in human skin, flavenoids in plant tissue), avoidance strategies (plankton migration to greater depths in the daytime, shade-seeking by desert iguanas) and, in almost all organisms but placental mammals, elaborate mechanisms to repair photochemical damage.

It is possible, however, that a major increase in solar ultraviolet might overwhelm the defenses of some and perhaps many terrestrial life forms. Both direct and indirect damage would then occur among the bacteria, insects, plants, and other links in the ecosystems on which human well-being depends. This disruption, particularly if it occurred in the aftermath of a major war involving many other dislocations, could pose a serious additional threat to the recovery of postwar society."

Even though I am religious, the reason I wouldn't commit suicide if I knew the world was ending is because if it is going to end I might as well experience it. If I'm dead, I'm dead. If there is an afterlife I won't care about the world ending and if there isn't it won't matter.

A lot of people are young and don't even remember the fall of the wall much less all the talk of ICBMs. I was born in 1950 and remember the duck and cover drills. My dad told me if a nuke hit us the desk would not in any way protect me then proceeded to explain what nukes do. My childhood was terrifying because the adults were always talking about it. In 1960 Khrushchev was pounding on a table and screaming at people and I got really scared. in 1962 we had the missile crisis I was only 12 and people were panic buying and really scared. After the fall of the soviet union, people forgot about a lot of that or were not around thru the cold war.

by Anonymousreply 174March 1, 2022 4:22 AM

Interesting article in Politico with Fiona Hill - wtf are "hypersonic missiles" (that Putin warned Trump about but we don't have them yet)?

Fiona Hill: Basically, what President Putin has said quite explicitly in recent days is that if anybody interferes in Ukraine, they will be met with a response that they’ve “never had in [their] history.” And he has put Russia’s nuclear forces on high alert. So he’s making it very clear that nuclear is on the table.

Putin tried to warn Trump about this, but I don’t think Trump figured out what he was saying. In one of the last meetings between Putin and Trump when I was there, Putin was making the point that: “Well you know, Donald, we have these hypersonic missiles.” And Trump was saying, “Well, we will get them too.” Putin was saying, “Well, yes, you will get them eventually, but we’ve got them first.” There was a menace in this exchange. Putin was putting us on notice that if push came to shove in some confrontational environment that the nuclear option would be on the table….

Unfortunately, we have politicians and public figures in the United States and around Europe who have embraced the idea that Russia was wronged by NATO and that Putin is a strong, powerful man and has the right to do what he’s doing…

So sadly, we are treading back through old historical patterns that we said that we would never permit to happen again. The other thing to think about in this larger historic context is how much the German business community helped facilitate the rise of Hitler. Right now, everyone who has been doing business in Russia or buying Russian gas and oil has contributed to Putin’s war chest. Our investments are not just boosting business profits, or Russia’s sovereign wealth funds and its longer-term development. They now are literally the fuel for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine...

Putin isn't rational and is partly on a religious quest.(Kyiv is where both the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian state claim they were founded.) You can see it in the eyes of some of his generals and others, they are fucking scared to death to oppose him but they know he is bonkers. He is a fucking Bond villain come to life crossed with Hitler. He is following the same basic plan without rounding up the Jews. My father worked on highly classified American defense projects for several decades, developing and programming weapons.

When I was a child, it was a popular rumor that where he worked was on the USSR nuclear target list. We lived a few towns over, so it scared the hell out of me.

My father sat down with my siblings and a map, drawing out where the bomb would hit, concentric circles of varying distances, and how those outlying regions would be affected. He assured us that by the time we felt the heat from the blast, it would all be over.

He's never been the kind of guy to blow smoke up a person's ass to make them feel better.

On the flip side, I've seen the mental anguish he feels over the work he's done, and know it's a heavy weight to carry.

I assume they'd want to either immediately take out the White House, Capitol and Pentagon - and then the military bases, especially any that have to do with nuclear sub navigation or that sort of thing. Well, defense facilities, in any case. Maybe then, nuclear power stations?

Y'all should listen to him this time.

by Anonymousreply 227March 1, 2022 10:27 PM
I can't wait until all the the boomers are gone so the nuclear war ages can be over.

Are you really this fucking stupid? Nuclear weapons were developed by scientists most from the Jazz Age under the direction of people from Roosevelt's generation. They were built up by the Greatest Generation and the Silent Generation. They've been under the command of Boomers since 1992 and thus far, none have been deployed. So go fuck yourself.

As for nuclear war, it's not happening. One, I'm not sure all this talk of Putin being isolated and "off" is real. Think about it...Marco Rubio is tweeting about it. Is there any reason on God's good earth to believe him about anything. Yet, he is perfect for the Russians to use to spread disinformation, whether he knows it or not. It could very well be a ploy to scare off the NATO allies (and the rest of the world). "See, Putin really is crazy!"

Two, Putin doesn't actually have his finger on a button. He has to order a nuclear strike. And as much as we like to portray Russia as the "big bad' (and the country does really suck), Russians, even their military, love their families and cherish their lives. They'll follow him into a Ukrainian invasion but firing nukes is a bridge too far. They'll kill him first. IMHO.

by Anonymousreply 228March 1, 2022 10:35 PM
One, I'm not sure all this talk of Putin being isolated and "off" is real. Think about it...Marco Rubio is tweeting about it. Is there any reason on God's good earth to believe him about anything.

Rubio is the ranking member of the Select Committee on Intelligence. So he does receive very high level briefings from the CIA and others. The talk about Putin being crazy or off has been circulating for a few years. I don't see it being Russian disinformation because their propaganda about Putin is always about how wonderful he is, I don't think he would want people to think he is crazy. Also, that makes him more of a target not less. The last thing any one wants is a crazy person with nuclear weapons. The thought is as long as the person isn't crazy diplomacy might work.

by Anonymousreply 237March 1, 2022 11:37 PM
The thought is as long as the person isn't crazy diplomacy might work.

That's one way to look at it. The other way is "let's not provoke that crazy sumbitch. He'll really do it."

I'm certainly aware that Rubio is the ranking member of the Select Committee on Intelligence. Has that stopped him or any other Republican from either lying or cherry-picking data? I've not heard that Putin was going crazy or off before, and I consider myself pretty well informed. As for Putin not wanting to think he's crazy...not at home, but for international consumption and if it means he wins Ukraine, he won't care. Only a crazy person would be that egotistical.

I only put it out there as a possibility. I'm not saying it's the absolute truth because no one really knows. Li'l Marco is certainly capable of being either a useful idiot or a bad actor.

Surely there are smaller nuclear weapons that would make a major nuclear strike look like an extreme over-reaction that would threaten the world - so the US and its allies could over-respond - yet Putin could get away with limited use of nuclear weapons. Does that make sense?

You sound like a wacko. Like those characters you see in cartoons holding up signs that "THE END IS NEAR."

by Anonymousreply 248March 2, 2022 5:07 PM

I actually believe this whole thing is Putin's attempt to bait the U.S. and other NATO members into attacking Russia, giving him an excuse to fire nuclear weapons on U.S. cities. It's just too loony and misguided to just be about making Ukrainians into Russian citizens.

by Anonymousreply 249March 2, 2022 5:11 PM

R243 I don't think he is padded cell looney but there are many conditions where the person is suffering from a mental illness and appears normal. Those are often the most dangerous people. He has been a nasty piece of work since he first became President. But, he has been growing worse ever since returned as President in 2012, after switching with the PM for a term.

by Anonymousreply 250March 2, 2022 5:12 PM

Nuclear war won't happen on purpose. But war is chaotic. Nuclear war could happen, following an accident.

by Anonymousreply 251March 3, 2022 12:06 AM
I don't think Russia will initiate a nuclear war. Why? Because the US would retaliate and it would be the end of the world. Literally, the end. I think Putin is an asshole, but I don't think he's insane enough to start a nuclear, which every thinking person knows is unwinnable.

He's like donald trump times ten. There is no way he is just going to tuck his tail between his legs and give up. That would be admitting he's wrong. And putin will NEVER, EVER do that.

by Anonymousreply 252March 4, 2022 3:58 AM
I think Putin is an asshole, but I don't think he's insane enough to start a nuclear, which every thinking person knows is unwinnable.

I grew up in the country. You have no idea what a crazed wild animal will do when it's cornered.
I think Putin is an asshole, but I don't think he's insane enough to start a nuclear, which every thinking person knows is unwinnable.

He'll be happy to take everyone in the world down with him. His men have also captured a nuclear power plant and set it on fire

by Anonymousreply 254March 4, 2022 9:15 AM

Just like with Covid, Africa will remain untouched.

by Anonymousreply 255March 4, 2022 9:18 AM

China already owns Africa.

by Anonymousreply 256March 4, 2022 1:00 PM

I think everyone on this thread who thinks nuclear war is imminent (in other words, the end of the world) should get together and commit mass suicide like the followers of Jim Jones did. They seem to be of that same doomsday mindset, so they should just put themselves out of their misery and be done with it.

by Anonymousreply 257March 4, 2022 8:38 PM

Well, hold on, R257, that is [italic]a lot[/italic] of stuff to ask for.

by Anonymousreply 258March 4, 2022 8:58 PM

R257 is asking us to leave our mother's basement? That's the safest place to be when the bomb hits!!!

by Anonymousreply 259March 4, 2022 9:08 PM

I live next to an airbase in Vermont. It will be quick at least.

by Anonymousreply 260March 4, 2022 9:14 PM

R257 What color matching outfits should we wear? It's not a proper mass suicide without a matching wardrobe. And what type of poisoned food or drink should we serve? It's all so complicated.

by Anonymousreply 261March 4, 2022 9:14 PM

R257 is triggered. Why else enter a thread he claims to have no interest in or concern about.

by Anonymousreply 262March 4, 2022 9:31 PM

R257 is panicking!

by Anonymousreply 263March 4, 2022 9:33 PM

I'm concerned.

by Anonymousreply 264March 4, 2022 10:07 PM

R261... I mean, kaftans. But probably drab.

by Anonymousreply 265March 4, 2022 10:13 PM
What color matching outfits should we wear?

Earrings Caftan

You had to ASK?

by Anonymousreply 266March 4, 2022 10:24 PM

Khaki, I'd guess. Either that or camo. God help us it's come to that.

by Anonymousreply 267March 4, 2022 10:26 PM

Let’s not forget the most important point when we discuss Nuclear War: that we do not mispronounce nuclear as nu-cu-lar.

by Anonymousreply 268March 4, 2022 10:37 PM
r257 is triggered. Why else enter a thread is triggered. Why else enter a thread he claims to have no interest in or concern about.

You seem to be the one "triggered", hon. And " he claims to have no interest in or concern about?" Who claimed that? I think you're fear of nuclear war is making you confused.

by Anonymousreply 269March 5, 2022 2:10 AM

{quote} R257 is panicking!

You're the one "panicking", sweetie. You think Putin is going to blow up the world. Now THAT is "panicking."

by Anonymousreply 270March 5, 2022 2:11 AM

I dunno. I'm the one who can [italic]successfully format.[/italic]

And I'm not reduced to irrational sweeties and hons.

Why not shut up and stop embarrassing yourself?
Why not shut up and stop embarrassing yourself?

Why don't you go huddle in a basement with a blanket over your head, you terrified twat. Perhaps that will make you feel safer.

You're the picture of calm, fool. You're embarrassing yourself. Don't you care?

Oh Boris, have another shot of vodka - then go sleep it off.

You Russkies always reveal yourself with your rage. You too, Vlad.
You're the picture of calm, fool. You're embarrassing yourself. Don't you care?

Hey, I'm not the one screaming about how the world is going to end soon, you poor thing. You're embarrassing yourself. And it's pretty obvious that you certainly do not "care."

by Anonymousreply 275March 5, 2022 2:23 AM

So what happened to the end-time scenario, anyway? The Russians seem to have become awfully quiet compared to what was expected of them this weekend. Are they saving their firepower for tomorrow? Did they realize that if they blow their whole wad on Kyiv, and don't take it, they won't have another chance until the new helicopters are delivered?

Time to rethink this.

by Anonymousreply 276March 5, 2022 8:06 PM

Putin would most likely take out the large military bases first.

by Anonymousreply 277March 5, 2022 8:51 PM

I keep thinking this would be a good time, while Russia's bogged down in Ukraine with no better outcome than a draining occupation, for some other country to grab a piece of Russia. But really, who the hell would want it? Would China like a Siberian oil field or two, or is possessing them more trouble than they're worth?

by Anonymousreply 278March 5, 2022 9:16 PM

Even the Russian citizens who are Putin lovers must be realizing that something is very wrong. They can't use their credit cards, have no communication with the outside world and prices are soaring.

by Anonymousreply 279March 6, 2022 9:37 PM

Vat you say, R279? If green card not work, I no can use black card?

by Anonymousreply 280March 6, 2022 10:00 PM

I can't help but notice that OP was full of shit. We've already moved on to other doomsdays.

by Anonymousreply 281March 22, 2022 11:43 AM

R263, Not only him. I'm not gonna lie, I'm panicking too!

by Anonymousreply 282March 28, 2022 6:50 PM

Just checked my watch and it's still nowhere close to midnight. Appears to be Monkeypox o'clock, actually.

The Doomsday Clock right now is at the closest to midnight since the Clock's start in 1947.

The Russians will not allow themselves to lose. And will use any means necessary.

by Anonymousreply 284June 4, 2022 11:01 PM

R284 Did they adjust it again? It wasn't all that close when they had their little shindig over the winter.

4 days ago - so Wednesday (I hate when they do that, why not just give the date) - any, the BBC:

EU leaders say they will block most Russian oil imports by the end of 2022 to punish Moscow for invading Ukraine...

Russia currently supplies 27% of the EU's imported oil and 40% of its gas. The EU pays Russia around €400bn ($430bn, £341bn) a year in return. So far, no sanctions on Russian gas exports to the EU have been put in place, although plans to open a new gas pipeline from Russia to Germany have been frozen.

The UK - which gets 8% of its oil needs from Russia - has pledged to phase out Russian oil by the end of the year.

R293 Note the the words in the article: "So far, no sanctions on Russian gas exports to the EU have been put in place"

If you were to ask anyone if there are EU sanctions currently in place against Russian gas, everyone would say "yes, of course".

Because that's what we've been led to believe.

Now they're telling us by the end of the year. 6th months from now. Oh really? I'll believe it when I see it.

In the meantime Europe is funding the war in Ukraine by paying them hundreds of millions each day.

And China and India are buying more Russian oil than ever.
