[quote] there’s something between a non-trivial and a very good likelihood Zelensky will not physically survive this conflict. And yet, there he is. He’s not running. It’s hard not to compare him — though the acts are vastly different — to Ashraf Ghani, the last President of Afghanistan, who got the hell outta do Dodge at the first hint things were going South. Very, very few of us will ever face a situation with such a combination of historic consequence and physical danger. But many of us face moments in which we must choose to face fear and live out our promises or run. Zelensky is passing that test.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 26, 2022 1:12 AM |

He's not unattractive by and means but his bravery is a huge turn on and I'd who am I kidding, I'd let him fuck me.

R52 The press are saying Putin wants him publicly beheaded (alive or dead).
by Anonymous | reply 53 | February 26, 2022 2:53 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 55 | February 26, 2022 3:01 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 66 | February 26, 2022 4:26 AM |
R54 I agree. Remember WWI started with the killing of the Archduke Ferdinand and his wife. I think that would ignite a new one. Zelenskyy is being the leader we would all like to imagine we would be, but that we know our leaders aren't anymore. Honestly, I could not see Trump or Biden staying in DC and fighting to what they know would be their very public deaths. Obama yes, even Bush and Clinton who both tried their damnedest not to go to Vietnam, I think would've done it. But, there aren't many today that I would count on to do that.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | February 26, 2022 4:27 AM |
Interesting, I think all of Trump, Obama, Bush, and Clinton would have found a way out, while HW Bush and Biden would both stay. And that would speak well of their moral character but maybe not of a certain survival instinct and ruthlessness you need in politics.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | February 26, 2022 4:30 AM |
R68 I could see VP Biden doing it, but he isn't that Biden anymore. To me Obama, W. Bush, and Clinton, would have done it if not out of loyalty and honor than to try and earn a place in history. HW Bush, though, was the last of the generation that would do it solely out of honor.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | February 26, 2022 4:33 AM |
From James LaPorta: “New @AP reporting tonight: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was asked to evacuate Kyiv at the behest of the U.S. government but turned down the offer. An American official tells me Zelenskyy said, “The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride.”
by Anonymous | reply 70 | February 26, 2022 4:38 AM |
It is a difficult position. I think if a wider war was going on there is power in being the government in exile, but there is no wider war so he is right, sadly, his fight is there. But I would not judge him if he let us get his wife and children out.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | February 26, 2022 4:49 AM |
He got a law degree before he became an actor so he's smart too.
I like the more boyish look in this picture (though the headline is a downer).
by Anonymous | reply 72 | February 26, 2022 5:02 AM |
Deep down, I wonder if Zelensky regrets going into politics. Like in a moment of clarity, does he wish he was still a funnyman? Coulda just been tellin’ jokes on TV, dayum! Still, I admire his resolve. Unlike the Afghan president who ran like a pussy with millions in stolen cash and a helicopter.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | February 26, 2022 5:02 AM |
R59 amazing!
by Anonymous | reply 74 | February 26, 2022 5:02 AM |
I'm not going to comment on how cute and adorable Zelenskyy is in that unassuming "everyman" sort of way, not classically goodlooking, but definitely charismatically attractive, he has a really nice face, the expression, the demeanor, it's all in the easy sensitive eyes and pleasant smile, seems so effortless and natural, you can see the apparent intelligence in his face, and on top of that, remaining steadfastly strong, infinitely brave, and deeply courageous to stay the course with his fellow Ukranians against the maniacal Putin war machine. That being said, reading the earlier chilling posts upthread about his presumed capture, imprisonment, torture, and public beheading, among other possibilities, makes me weep for him and his family. Call me MARY!, but I'm crying my eyes out just reading about it, thinking about it, such tragic and heartbreaking circumstances, and rather than making a quick convenient exit, he stays and fights, shoulder to shoulder with his fellow countrymen, and risks a most certain violent end for himself, but still he remains, all through these dire straights, I'm wondering Where is the rest of the world? :-/
by Anonymous | reply 75 | February 26, 2022 5:19 AM |
He was fairly good looking before all this insanity, crossing into hot with certain angles (and when shirtless). Now his sexiness is off the charts.
Bravery is very attractive.
I hope he survives.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | February 26, 2022 5:52 AM |
The calculation is that anyone can take over as leader of Ukraine in exile. His main power is now symbolic. Ukraine can't fight off Russia, they can just fight back and let the world see how ruthless Putin is. Now he's an example to his people of being brave and fighting back, if the worst happens, he'll be a symbol that can rally the world even more against Russia.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | February 26, 2022 6:24 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 79 | February 26, 2022 6:29 AM |
I don't really find him attractive. But he seems incredibly brave for an entertainer who just sort of fell into the presidency and now has to deal with being hunted to the death by Russians.

I couldn't have imagined what is happening now. In 2022, this is absurd. I was so naive, I did not believe that such barbarism was still possible.
Trump should burn in hell. Russia's successful interference and undermining of our Democracy emboldened Putin. Trump fucking with U.S. aid to Ukraine made it vulnerable. Now he's cheering Russia from the sidelines.

by Anonymous | reply 84 | February 26, 2022 7:32 AM |
R3 It's all subjective. Saying "I don't think he's hot" is expressing your opinion. Making a dumb statement like "He's not hot" just makes you sound ignorant and self-important.

[quote] A nuclear power like Russia can’t just go invading neighboring countries unprovoked.
Says who?
by Anonymous | reply 116 | February 26, 2022 6:53 PM |
R114 The problem is that rationally you would expect nuclear powers like the US, UK, and France to exercise restraint. Even if you believe Trump would have used nuclear weapons, without provocation, you would expect someone in the military or civilian side to stop it. But, can you feel the same way about Russia or China. I don't like the old Soviet leadership, but I could understand trusting that they would show restraint. I don't feel that way about Putin or Xi, but especially Putin. I could see Putin gambling with the use of nuclear weapons and he has a lot of them to gamble with. Russians, especially Russian Orthodox, which he claims to be, are extremely fatalistic. The last person I want to tussle with is a fatalistic despot with thousands of nuclear weapons.
I don't agree with punishing countries hard after something and humiliating them, that is what we did in WWI which gave us Hitler and WWII. But, at the end of the Cold War the West should have swooped in and taken all the nuclear weapons and technology out of the former Soviet Union in return for massive amounts of money and reconstruction.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | February 26, 2022 7:07 PM |

R138- Russia did not want Ukraine to be a member of NATO and the U.S. promised years ago that it would not but in recent years the U.S. kept telling Russia that Ukraine might be allowed to join NATO which Russia saw as a threat because it would mean that the U.S. military could then have it's weapons right up against the border of Russia. The point is this whole mess could have been prevented.

How so? By accepting Ukraine to NATO earlier? Or to make a point saying Ukraine would never be allowed to join? For different reasons both options sound wrong to me.

R143 it is wrong. R142 is spewing old talking points despite Putin announcing to the world why he invaded Ukraine. It has nothing to do with NATO but his own fever dreams of reviving the great Russian empire.
Since Putin apologists are also Trump supporters, they defend these men the same way: ascribe good intentions to their psychotic behavior, deny they said what they said, blame the opposition and eventually come around to insisting the terrible things they do aren't so bad after all.

You must be American or British.
Always so threatened by male sexuality.
Watch any dancer on DWTS (especially the Europeans), and you'll see that's how they all move.
The fact that Zelenskyy can even move like that, shows that he's a natural.

Zelenskyy is pro-Israel (democracy) and anti-Palestine (dictatorship). I see a pattern in his general approach. Good for him. Not diminishing the misery of the Palestinian people. But Palestinians living in Israel live better than Palestinians living in Gaza or West-bank. If troll 174 makes me choose, my preference will always be the one with a democratic elected government.
Zelenskyy has his faults, but from what I hear and read his moral compass seems to be well-adjusted. And that seems to help Ukraine right now. If Ukraine's leadership really had a stench of corruption and autocracy like ten years ago it wouldn't receive this current world-wide support.

by Anonymous | reply 193 | February 27, 2022 3:25 PM |
I'd say that's the one thing Putin does right. If I were in his position I'd keep my children out of public sight as well. Just look at the ridicule the Trump kids got, especially the ones who are not involved in his business or politics. I'm sure safety concerns make him want to keep his private life rather obscure. And I'm sure the Putin kids agree. They want to embezzle the country rather in the dark than in the (international) public eye.

[quote] Putin returned to Moscow and, after some hesitation, accepted the offer. “I will work wherever you assign me,” he said, according to Yeltsin’s memoirs, Midnight Diaries. The following year, one of Putin’s first presidential decrees granted Yeltsin and his family immunity from prosecution, ensuring that no corruption probes could ever strip the Yeltsins of their wealth.

[quote] According to investigations by Reuters and Bloomberg, Katerina is married to a young oil executive named Kirill Shamalov, whose net worth is estimated by Forbes magazine to be $1.25 billion. Their marriage helps illustrate just how tightly knit Putin’s circle has become. Shamalov’s father Nikolay is one of the President’s oldest friends. He is also one of the founders of Bank Rossiya, which the U.S. Treasury Department identified in 2014 as the “personal bank” for Putin and his close associates.

R205 The US, Germany, and others are sending weapons. I hope they can hold out another 48 hours or more. I hope they can see, they are not just fighting for their country anymore, they could free the world of Putin. This invasion is costing Russia $30 billion/day. Their stock market and currency is going to tank tomorrow.
The Oligarchs from which Putin derives his power, are not happy. Because they are the ones suffering. One of their big tv hosts was on Russian TV complaining about losing his two Italian villas next to George Clooney.
Sanctions are actually a great tool against Russia, because for the most part average everyday Russians have very little trade with the west, so unlike in other countries it doesn't really hurt them. It might inconvenience a few, but not horribly. The Oligarchs, however, largely live in the West. Roman Abramovich has had to turn Chelsea FC over to it's charitable arm. If this ends up costing him Chelsea completely, he will turn on Putin. That club and what it represents has become his entire persona. So I hope Boris Johnson is investigating how to legally make that happen.
Putin claims to be a populist, but it is hard to claim that title when your populous is marching against you and the soldiers fighting your war feel lied to. Numerous captured soldiers have said they were told that they were on training maneuvers and some didn't even realize they were in Ukraine. I mean say what you will about any of our recent Presidents, but none of them would send soldiers into a war without telling them first.
If Ukraine can hold out at least 48 more hours. I think this could end with Putin's ouster. There will be probably bloody protests by the Russian people and behind the scenes the Oligrachs will be doing to him what Prince Felix Yusupov and the others did to Rasputin, at least figuratively. Whomever takes over will probably be charged by the elites with keeping things calm, not rocking the boat. It is much easier to rob your population blind if you're quiet about it instead of inviting the world to always watch.
by Anonymous | reply 206 | February 27, 2022 11:47 PM |
Thanks for your input, r206. I wish I could share the hope from your last paragraph. What worries me: 1. I don't see anyone in sight in Moscow who would have the chops or the balls to remove Putin. 2. For the short and long term I see China propping up Putin. They already agreed to purchase more Russian wheat. And I'm sure they find ways provide financial support for more servitude in return. 3. I keep hearing about protests in Moscow and other bigger cities. But I don't get the impression that the pressure is up that leads to any change.
by Anonymous | reply 207 | February 28, 2022 1:15 AM |
R207 To me it is the Oligarchs, they have the power and they aren't happy. The protests would just be something they could use for PR, claiming it was the public that did it. China will not back a loser. If his army can't quickly over run Ukraine, Beijing will cut the cord.
by Anonymous | reply 208 | February 28, 2022 1:27 AM |

I wonder what he thinks his endgame can be. It seems easy to picture Ukraine eventually being occupied by Russia, or turned into a satellite. The other option I cannot really imagine. Is it even conceivable that Russians leave defeated if things don't go well? Ukraine's military appears to be quite defensive oriented (and quite good at it so far). But I'm not really feeling them taking charge and turning the invasion around.
Please, share some insight that can make me hopeful.

r256, the article posted yesterday, I believe they went on strike today. I really hate them.
by Anonymous | reply 257 | March 2, 2022 2:42 AM |
R256 I think that is his endgame now. But, I honestly think those in power around the world, including the US, have been surprised by Ukraine's resistance. The longer they hold out the more likely he is to fall. Their economy has been destroyed, this invasion is costing billions a day, the oligarchs are starting to really pay the price of being near him, and those are the keys. Also, many are asking where is the Russian Air Force? It might mean he doesn't have the military completely. There is also the fact that our intelligence agencies are saying his nuclear order, hasn't appeared to have been implemented by his military. I know it is being dismissed as propaganda but I believe the stories about Russian soldiers being sent to war without the knowledge they were going to war and being lied to is true. I can guarantee you the generals were not happy doing that, I can't imagine any general being fine with that. I remember the stories that aired often on the evening news around the turn of the century about Russian soldiers going on strike or just abandoning their posts and going home because they hadn't been paid in so long. I'd be fine with the West announcing that we will financially reward any enlisted Russian soldier in Ukraine who surrenders and passage to the Western country of their choice. Most of their recruits are like a lot of our enlisted men and women, they are there because it was the only option. They also have conscripts, who apparently aren't supposed to be sent to the front lines but have been captured in Ukraine.
I think he is isolating himself, more and more. If something major doesn't happen soon, either his generals or the oligarchs will remove him. Personally, I'd prefer it be the generals.

I agree R258. The other hope is that Putin's army just mass defects. It's not unlikely at all given how poorly they seem to be treated and their lack of preparation.
Military coup seems more likely to me though. A military defection would be the true dissolution of Putin's government and I don't think his cronies would let that happen.

I don’t see him groveling to the rest of the world to lift the sanctions, so something will have to give. It just won’t be soon, although I wish it were.

[quote] Not necessarily something I would look forward to. Putin gone, and Russia run by a general.
It isn't ideal but a general might be what Russia needs right now, especially if he is a good one. I think it would take the military to really break the oligarchy. And, once they break them up, they can transition back to a better working democracy.
And, most generals are very risk averse so they are the opposite of Putin.

I really liked the season opener, but that Picard/Laris hook doesn't feel right. In the first season I took that relationship as 'friends', maybe even as 'motherly caretaker'. And now that hubby is dead, she wants all of Picard? To me that spells horny, not in love. I also don't care about a story from his childhood. Something traumatic happened and it still impacts the 90 year old? And it never came up before? Um... no.
Other than that, I loved it. Milque-toast Agnes finally gets interest being the resident drunk. The Android girl had only three lines. And Seven is still avenging with a passion. (Up next: Seven goes back in time hunting down Putin.) And the look and atmosphere feel right, just like TNG. Let's hope they stay consistent.

by Anonymous | reply 286 | March 4, 2022 9:28 PM |
R286 The last thing Zelenskyy wanted at the time was to be seen as playing a part in a partisan issue in the US. He wanted to keep the US happy, so he didn't want either side to hate him and Ukraine.

R286, I disagree. Dump was extorting the guy and holding much needed aid to Ukraine, but Zelenskyy didn’t buckle. He could have easily done what Dump wanted but he didn’t.
by Anonymous | reply 292 | March 6, 2022 4:36 PM |
I don't know R290. Given the war started 11 days ago, and his family is safely away somewhere, who knows how long it's been. He's surrounded by his bodyguards so if he gets frustrated hopefully they give him some alone time to clean the pipes.

There are a lot of bloodthirsty idiotic assholes, like you, who will cheer the war as long as they're told to.
No one is coming to save Ukraine. The longer the war goes on, the more people will die. Putin's an asshole but he's not an idiot. He'll settle for east of the Dnieper river.

EJ Dickson is living up to their name R312. So we aren't allowed to sexualize the few attractive politicians anymore? Who made them the morality police?
And bringing up Avenatti and Cuomo is both crass and ridiculous. Apparently the writer is so blinded by horniness that they'd happily endorse the positions held by whomever their latest sexual fixation is.
Luckily, we'd have more discipline right DL?
by Anonymous | reply 313 | March 10, 2022 8:59 AM |
I think Rolling Stone is narrowing the scope too much and falling into the same trap it decries. The article claims that people idolize their celebrities too much. That's hardly a problem just for liberals. That pretty much applies to all celebrities since the dawn of the internet, probably even way before if not forever. It's not a new phenomenon.
At the same time the article casually assumes that ALL liberals make the same mistake when it's probably just a handful. The hyperbole online has gotten so much out of hand that readers get easily desensitized. "The internet thinks this or that". Obviously, real numbers would be pretty boring. "300 people in the US believe that Zelenskyy is quite good looking."
by Anonymous | reply 314 | March 10, 2022 12:54 PM |
R314 That is rich coming from Rolling Stone. If people didn’t idolise rock/pop stars so much they would be out of a job.

It’s not propaganda. Nobody really believes he’s on the front lines. But the whole country is a war zone, so…
by Anonymous | reply 347 | March 19, 2022 8:20 PM |
Zelensky has never claimed he is fighting on the front lines. He has released where he is located. Ukrainians know he’s in Kyiv.

by Anonymous | reply 352 | March 20, 2022 5:29 AM |
Dovzhenko studio has been bombed. and destroyed. The Russians thought Zelensky was there.
Let’s hope he has survived another day.
by Anonymous | reply 353 | March 20, 2022 5:44 AM |
Why would he announce the location of his bunker, for it to (possibly) be bombed or for him and staff to be taken prisoner? Odd. Hope that source is full of shit. No offense to you, R352.
by Anonymous | reply 354 | March 20, 2022 5:49 AM |
I meant the bunker at the presidential palace. Zelensky has claimed he’s there in the past. But maybe he’s moved. I hope so.
Every past report from my source on the ground has been accurate. I get no reports on deaths, just what’s been bombed. The reports usually arrive here two days later.
by Anonymous | reply 355 | March 20, 2022 5:56 AM |
I hope to hell they have him (and staff) at a less obvious and more secure location than that. But I guess you never know. That would be one of the first places I'd go after, just as a symbolic "FU", even if I didn't think there weren't important people in there. I really, really hope they didn't take that chance.
by Anonymous | reply 356 | March 20, 2022 6:01 AM |
I'm thinking snipers and Ukrainian traitors are just as much of a risk than the bombs. Allegedly the MI6 is helping out protecting him. I'm sure he's moved from shelter to shelter every night, not staying at one location for two nights. Saving the president's life is probably one of the greatest objective for the Ukrainian military.
by Anonymous | reply 357 | March 20, 2022 6:10 AM |

🙄
by Anonymous | reply 365 | March 24, 2022 4:20 PM |
^ In this case I guess "show it or it didn't happen" really applies. I have a hard time believing this, especially considering that smear campaigns are a lot more common in Ukraine and Russia than in other countries, "kompromat" campaigns. So if a video hasn't appeared yet, it most likely doesn't exist and still needs to be fabricated - which may actually happen any time.
