The Gays and Tennis Part 109

last thread just about finished

we're in the middle of the pre-Sunshine Double swing with tournaments all over the place from Mexico to the Middle East

Zverev just got himself bounced from Acapulco by hitting the umpire's chair with his racquet after losing his doubles match. As discussed in the last thread he almost hit the guy's feet. He apologized on IG but of course no one is buying it

He's a nasty piece of work who's been getting worse not better. The ATP really needs to make an example of him. I don't know if it's just me, but there really seems to have been a progressive deterioration in on-court behaviour over the past few years. The racket-smashing, ball abuse, umpire abuse seems to have become pretty normalised.

Eric Adams ‘can’t wait’ to change vax mandate in boon for Kyrie Irving, Nets

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 2February 23, 2022 6:28 PM

Mayor Eric Adams announced Wednesday morning that he “can’t wait” to adjust the city’s vaccine mandate for indoor spaces, including arenas, and suggested a phase-out could arrive “in the next few weeks.”

In his most definitive comments yet — although without a firm timeline — Adams provided a path through which the Nets could have their unvaccinated star on the court full-time for the first time this season. Thus far, Irving has only played in road games.

“I look forward in the next few weeks of going to a real transformation that I don’t have to wonder what you look like, I would know what you look like again,” Adams said at a news conference at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. “And so we are moving in the right direction, we’re going to do it in a safe way.”

by Anonymousreply 3February 23, 2022 6:29 PM

Something is seriously off about this Adams dude. He seems inherently unstable.

by Anonymousreply 4February 23, 2022 6:32 PM

some notable results today so far:

In Doha

Ostapenko continues sudden good form by routining Krejcikova 6-3 6-2

Gauff upsets Badosa 6-2 6-3

Dubai:

Vesely upsets RBA 6-2 6-4

Djokovic def. Khachanov 6-3 7-6(2)

Sinner def. Murray 7-6 6-2

If R6 were an umpire’s chair, A. Zverev would think of hitting it.

by Anonymousreply 8February 23, 2022 9:21 PM

Gauff is now the favorite at Roland Garros.

by Anonymousreply 9February 23, 2022 9:48 PM

Mary Joe is pigeon-toed. I've seen if first-hand.

by Anonymousreply 10February 23, 2022 9:50 PM

Is the Ump in the Zverev clip gay? He gives him such a "gurl please" look as he's walking away.

by Anonymousreply 11February 23, 2022 9:59 PM

K. Hemsworth has beautiful creamy skin.

by Anonymousreply 14February 24, 2022 1:34 AM

by Anonymousreply 15February 24, 2022 1:35 AM

Our Hubie defeats Ginge-Juice Can't (Sinner) quite comfortably, and takes his spot in the Top 10. Today is another good day.

by Anonymousreply 16February 24, 2022 1:43 PM

Vesely just dumped out NoVaxxx in Dubai! He's now 2-0 against him H2H.

Jiri Vesely is THE NUGOAT!

by Anonymousreply 17February 24, 2022 4:11 PM

Jiri Vesely boots Novaxx Djocovid out of Dubai. Jiri Vesely is one the very few players that have a 100% success rate against the just about to become former number 1. They played twice together and Jiri won twice.

by Anonymousreply 18February 24, 2022 4:13 PM

All I need now is for the Canadian Halfwit to lose and then it will be Officially The Greatest Day In Tennis Ever!

by Anonymousreply 21February 24, 2022 4:40 PM

Medvedev now the first non Big Four No.1 since Andy Roddick in 2003.

by Anonymousreply 22February 24, 2022 4:45 PM

really fascinating how Vesely just seems to match up well against Djokovic. It's like Serena against Bammer

Vesely seemed on the rise several years ago but fell way off. This week he's rediscovered his form

by Anonymousreply 23February 24, 2022 5:10 PM

Along with Djokovic's declining game making the vax debacle a moot point in the GOAT debate, Zverev getting suspended for a year would cap this week off quite nicely.

by Anonymousreply 24February 24, 2022 5:23 PM

Rublev tweeted against the war too, quite brave given how the russian media will react against people who dissent

by Anonymousreply 25February 24, 2022 5:56 PM

"@ATPChallenger

Due to concerns over player safety and uncertainty related to international travel following the recent escalation of events between Russia and Ukraine, next week’s ATP Challenger tournament in Moscow will not take place as scheduled."

by Anonymousreply 26February 24, 2022 7:13 PM

Rublev posted this picture to his instagram, brought a tear to my eye.

"In these moments you realise that my match is not important. What's happening is much more terrible.

You realise how important is to have peace in the world and to respect each other no matter what, to be united. We should take care of our earth and of each other."

Awkward time for a Russian to be the new ATP number 1.

by Anonymousreply 30February 24, 2022 11:15 PM

R30 the timing is crazy. Happens on the same day Russia invades.

by Anonymousreply 31February 24, 2022 11:17 PM

Let's be fair to Medvedev. He deserves it. He's lived in France for years and speaks fluent French. He's hardly part of Putin's regime.

by Anonymousreply 32February 24, 2022 11:21 PM

Not saying he doesnt deserve it or associating him with Putin. Just pointing out the coincidence.

by Anonymousreply 33February 24, 2022 11:28 PM

yeah, most of these Russian players live in Monaco officially.

by Anonymousreply 34February 24, 2022 11:47 PM

R34 Medvedev lives in the South of France, not Monaco. He pays French taxes. He's a good bloke.

by Anonymousreply 35February 24, 2022 11:55 PM

Can't believe that no one mentioned that Vesely is fat as hell. I've never seen a fatter male tennis player. He's also apparently very tall as he was at least two inches taller than Novaxx.

by Anonymousreply 36February 25, 2022 12:05 AM

You need to get around more, R36.

by Anonymousreply 37February 25, 2022 12:23 AM

Christ, he's slow. Just because two others got in with the same 'exemption', it doesn't mean it was valid. And indeed all three of them had to leave the country. The two others got through by mistake. Djokovic paraded his exemption on social media, so he did get more scrutiny but it still doesn't mean that the exemption was valid.

by Anonymousreply 45February 25, 2022 10:42 AM

I just turned on the Hubie and Rublev match. Why in the hell does it sound like Tippi Hedren just showed up in town?! I've never heard so many birds in my life. I can't stand to listen to it on television let alone being there and trying to concentrate. They're in the damn desert; how many birds can there be there?

by Anonymousreply 46February 25, 2022 1:41 PM

R46 I've been wondering exactly the same thing. I would have associate vultures with the desert in the Middle East rather than flocks of tweety birds!

by Anonymousreply 53February 26, 2022 5:28 AM

R50 I get the impression that even most Russians are against the war. I don't think this war has a lot of support among the Russian people. Might be Putin's downfall.

by Anonymousreply 54February 26, 2022 6:17 AM

has former Duma member and minority (he's a Tatar) Safin said anything?

by Anonymousreply 55February 26, 2022 6:20 AM

Safin is an ass kisser, he won't say a thing against Putin ever

by Anonymousreply 56February 26, 2022 9:05 AM

R50 I also think that it was better for Medvedev to lose (not that he tanked it) and be out of the spotlight for a while. It cannot be easy being a Russian nowadays, even if you are against the war. Look at Gergiev at Carnegie Hall and in Germany. it can get very ugly for Russians.

by Anonymousreply 57February 26, 2022 9:36 AM

Zverev, though technically German, is making great strides in perpetuating the stereotype. He's tennis' Putin.

by Anonymousreply 58February 26, 2022 12:36 PM

The second set, 3-2 game, nadal-medvedev is as good as tennis gets.

Stephens reaches first final in forever with a 3-6 7-5 ret. win over Kalinskaya in Guadalajara

by Anonymousreply 66February 27, 2022 2:32 AM

R65 to be fair though they are afraid to be too forceful when speaking out. Even if they don't live in Russia they have relatives there and we know Putin could retaliate. I'm actually surprised any of them have said anything at all

by Anonymousreply 67February 27, 2022 2:33 AM

Nadal maintains his win streak by defeating Norrie 6-4 6-4 for the Acapulco title

by Anonymousreply 68February 27, 2022 7:15 AM

Rafa is just killing it. If he is able to win Indian Wells, is there any chance he can get to number one by the French?

I know he has some clay points to defend, but not his usual amount. If he can get to number one by the French - or even just after? He has zero points to defend the rest of the year and could easily end the year number one.

(Of course, with his foot, who knows about his sustained health.)

by Anonymousreply 69February 27, 2022 7:58 AM

I said he was lucky to win the AO because he was gifted the match by both Shapovalov and Medvedev.

He seems to have raised his level at Acapulco though and really took it to Medvedev this time and also Norrie. The last 2 rounds he really earned this title

by Anonymousreply 70February 27, 2022 8:35 AM

Fed or Nole fan, R70?

by Anonymousreply 71February 27, 2022 8:54 AM

I'd like him in MY box.

by Anonymousreply 75February 27, 2022 11:03 AM

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 76February 27, 2022 11:48 AM

Look out for Nadal. He is a confidence player. I do agree that Shapo and Medvedev gifted Rafa those matches at the AO, especially Medvedev, BUT Nadal is forever a fighter and he proved to himself once again that if he keeps fighting, good things can happen. If only this younger generation would get that in their heads. It really is pathetic that they can't take out Nadal. I think Nadal has started to get that aura around him again.

Look out for the next two Slams. I can't imagine any of these wimpy younger guys actually taking Nadal out in five at Roland Garros. And dumb-as-fuck Djokovic would rather double down on his stupidity about vaccines than fight for his place in history. Meanwhile, ever the opportunist, Nadal is just walking through that door, likely to permanent GOAT status.

by Anonymousreply 91February 28, 2022 6:51 AM

Svitolina is Ukranian. She's ranked 15 and has been in the Top 5. Good career, but could never win a Slam. Can't see her doing it now. She's married to Gael Monfils from France - an ATP tour veteran - who also has had a very good career, but never really a serious Slam contender.

by Anonymousreply 92February 28, 2022 6:55 AM

In the Monterrey draw that is now out

of course with the conflict going on, #1 seed Svitolina just had to draw a 1st rd Russian opponent, Potapova. That's going to be so awkward for both

by Anonymousreply 99February 28, 2022 8:01 PM

She does say that she's fine with them still competing but as 'neutral' athletes like we saw at the Olympics. Which is a bit of a joke anyway, I doubt most of the players would even be bothered by having a slightly different flag.

medwed33 Verified Do you all remember what I have said after Australian Open final? This story was just about me, my childhood dreams. And today I want to speak on behalf of every kid in the world. They all have dreams, their life is just starting, so many nice experiences to come: first friends, first great emotions. Everything they feel and see is for the first time in their lives. That’s why I want to ask for peace in the world, for peace between countries. Kids are born with inner trust in the world, they believe so much in everything: in people, in love, in safety and justice,in their chances in life. Let’s be together and show them that it’s true, cause every kid shouldn’t stop dreaming. #kiddontstopdreaming

#kiddontstopdreaming

And here we go: Eugenie Bouchard former future GOAT has now fallen off the WTA ranking to 1356 and only has 7 points left to defend. But at least, as opposed to Miss Kournikova, she did win that one odd tournament, the 250 level Nuremberg Cup, back in 2014.

I know she twice declined to shake her opponent's hand before a match (out of a sense of entitlement probably) but how will we ever know if she eventually changed her mind on the subject if she's no longer playing tennis on the WTA level?

Sad. Especially for her dad's bad investment in her career...

by Anonymousreply 128March 1, 2022 9:06 AM

it'll be interesting to see if Mrs Monfils plays today. I just checked and she's still scheduled to play.. There must be some panicked WTA meetings going on now.

by Anonymousreply 129March 1, 2022 9:17 AM

well a lot of other sports are taking action but so far ITF, ATP and WTA have nott

Is it because Svitolina is the only prominent player from Ukraine? There are some younger promising women but she's the only top player. The men have no one. Conversely the ATP now has a Russian ranked #1 making things awkward. I wonder if there was a top male Ukrainian the tennis bodies might have moved faster?

by Anonymousreply 130March 1, 2022 9:38 AM

They can just change the flag and call them 'Russian Tennis Committee', she's not really asking for much. Maybe there's a legal issue though.

by Anonymousreply 131March 1, 2022 9:44 AM

Svitolina, apologize for Wołyń first!

by Anonymousreply 132March 1, 2022 12:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 134March 1, 2022 4:33 PM

The ATP and WTA have announced that Russian and Belarusian tennis players can still play but only as individuals. The WTA has already removed the Russian flag and country name next to the athletes on the website.

by Anonymousreply 139March 1, 2022 6:37 PM

I wouldn't call a loss to Vesely in the Dubai quarterfinals fantastic playing, R139. Maybe time and that colossal ego have finally begun to take their toll on Novaxx.

by Anonymousreply 140March 1, 2022 6:45 PM

"And djoko can play five more years, six? It is strange though. Maybe he feels like he needs new blood (a la Moya with Nadal) "

Hard to say. He's always been super fit, but he is mid 30s. Fed, Nadal, and Novak have sort of rewritten how much a player can achieve at what age. But still, age catches up with you eventually. And when it does, it doesn't have to be a gradual slide. One step slower means no more Slams. He could be fine for one or two years and then "lose it." Or he could play Slam champion caliber-tennis until he's 39. I guess we'll see.

by Anonymousreply 155March 1, 2022 11:17 PM

The same was with djoko.

by Anonymousreply 156March 1, 2022 11:47 PM

It's been a while now since Djokovic has been Mr. Invincible, let alone his sole '22 play being a sad loss to a player ranked outside the top 100: the loss to PCB at last year's Olympics, the 2021 USO loss to Medvedev, the Nitto YE loss to Zverev, only one championship since Wimbledon. This doesn't look like a train that's set to turn around.

by Anonymousreply 157March 2, 2022 12:08 AM

"It's been a while now since Djokovic has been Mr. Invincible."

He was one match away from winning the actual "Grand Slam" last September. Hasn't been that long. Yeah, he had some matches along the way that might have been easier than in the past. But still.

by Anonymousreply 158March 2, 2022 12:11 AM

I meant "easier in the past."

by Anonymousreply 159March 2, 2022 12:13 AM

Yes, but he's also at an age when time is less forgiving. If he even plays RG, that's nine months since his last match win at a Slam.

Is IW doing their pre-qualification tournament this year? The last several years before covid they were doing an "anyone can enter" promotion. The winner would then advance to the official qualifying draw. A lot of players who weren't ranked high enough would sign up and I think 1 year someone got all the way to the main draw

I haven't seen news of it yet.

I want Rothenberg to ask Shapovalov if Putin is still his idol at Indian Wells

by Anonymousreply 171March 4, 2022 2:06 AM

Question - I'm thinking of getting a grounds pass for the day at Indian Wells. Is there a particular day during the week that is better than any other day to do that ?

by Anonymousreply 172March 4, 2022 5:28 AM

R172 remember all seeds have a bye. So if you want to take your chance that there will be some great non-seed opening round matches then the first couple days. I would think maybe the third round when you have seeds starting to clash, there will be some great matches that won't be on the main court.

by Anonymousreply 173March 4, 2022 7:20 AM

During the week is more chill in my experience. I'm not sure what day it starts. Whenever it is, I'd go on a weekday that encompasses the second round and/or third round. The matchups will be better on paper (higher ranked players) by the third round, though honestly it's high level across the tournament, so it's not THAT important. Plus, second and third round there's still a lot of matches going on to choose from - later rounds are all on the show courts and you need specific tickets.

it's a 96 player draw, with the Top 32 players having byes in the first round. So first round is everyone BUT the top 32 players. Second round is the last 64 players with the Top 32 players playing their first match. Third round is the last 32 players - slated to play each other on paper (but of course there's some upsets prior).

And remember, not everyone plays the same round every day - one half of the draw is usually a day behind until later in the tournament. IMO, the perfect day would be when there's the remaining second round matches left on one half, but third round on the other half.

Sorry if this is too much info. Grounds passes are great and even if you get one for the first round where none of the top 32 are playing, it's still a blast and the tennis is high level.

R172 I would say the best times are weekdays end of the first week or second week. Not as many people and more players are still alive to walk around and watch matches or practices. I have Stadium passes for Friday and Saturday afternoon. I'm trying to be optimal with the amount of players I can watch but also don't want to go when it's too crowded. More people are prone to take time off work the second week and weekends are pretty packed always. I'm a little nervous about Saturday but just gonna be as safe as I can. I will definitely report back on all DL boyfriends and sluts. And any gossip I stumble upon.

by Anonymousreply 180March 4, 2022 5:43 PM

R179 I've never understood why people call him 'Misery' since he has such a good sense of humour. I would think, being on this thread, you probably follow him and others on SM. You've seen that Murray is no 'Misery'. He can be pretty deadpan at times, but he's a good bloke who's not afraid to take the piss out of himself.

by Anonymousreply 181March 4, 2022 6:28 PM

by Anonymousreply 183March 4, 2022 6:32 PM

R182 Mate, I'm British. It's practically mandatory for us to watch them. I just don't get why people call him 'Misery' when he behaves no more intense than anyone else. He's shown off-court he's a good bloke with a great sense of humour and doesn't take himself too seriously. We can't say that for all the top players.

by Anonymousreply 184March 4, 2022 6:42 PM

off-court Murray is very likable

he's called "Misery" because on court he can be insufferable, mopey etc He'll bark at the chair umpire constantly about things not being fair, he'll yell at himself for missing, he'll yell at his box and the dreaded "play dead" schtick in which he pretends to be so injured but runs like a gazelle once the point starts. He's not quite as annoying post-hip surgery as he was during his peak though.

A. Zverev has been handed a suspended eight-week ban and $US25,000 fine for smashing his racquet against the umpire's chair at last month's ATP 500 event in Acapulco.

The ban and fine will be withheld if Zverev does not incur any more sanctions for unsportsmanlike conduct, verbal or physical abuse over a 12-month probation period. The probation ends on February 22, 2023.

Last month, Zverev was fined $US20,000 for verbal abuse, $US20,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct and forfeited more than $US31,000 in prize money and all rankings points earned from singles and doubles action in Acapulco.

by Anonymousreply 263March 8, 2022 5:21 PM

do we really think Zverev will make it for a whole year without another incident? Surely there will be upcoming matches in which he doesn't like some calls that an umpire makes. He's very lucky that they're giving him 1 more chance

by Anonymousreply 264March 8, 2022 5:51 PM

Andy Murray shows the rest how it's done.

Can we please dump the 'Misery' title now?

by Anonymousreply 265March 8, 2022 6:17 PM

Tedious old DL 'jokes' never die, R265. There's always someone senile or braindead enough to think posting 'yellow skin' or womanly butt' or whatever crap is screamingly hilarious and a rich part of the forum's legacy.. Especially on tennis threads, for some reason.

by Anonymousreply 266March 8, 2022 10:03 PM

R266 It's a shame as I really like the tennis threads and they're very friendly. Yes we take the piss out of the biggest arseholes but we tend to be fair.

by Anonymousreply 267March 8, 2022 10:59 PM

oh boy

so the men's draw has been made with Djokovic included despite the fact he's not in the country lol very likely he'll be withdrawn and then some seeds will be reshuffled

notable 1st rounds

Fucsovics vs. McDonald

Musetti vs. Giron

Coric vs. Davidovich Fokina

Kyrgios vs. Baez

Dimitrov vs. Paul

Koepfer vs. Paire

Mannarino vs. Nakashima

by Anonymousreply 268March 9, 2022 12:00 AM

Nooooooooo. Two DL boyfriends Young Grigor vs Tommy Paul in the first round??

by Anonymousreply 269March 9, 2022 12:02 AM

Krejcikova has just withdrawn citing an elbow injury. Instead of reshuffling seeds Cornet will just take her place. So maybe they won't reshuffle the men after Djokovic is removed from the draw?

by Anonymousreply 270March 9, 2022 12:05 AM

They wont reshuffle if he pulls out. Just stick someone else there.

by Anonymousreply 271March 9, 2022 12:07 AM

this tournament will be a great test for Alcaraz who has a very tough path each round.

last year's finalists Norrie and Basilashvili could face off in the third round

Nadal could open against Korda

Murray gets a qualifier

by Anonymousreply 272March 9, 2022 12:12 AM

Hoping to see Borna conquer Putin's idolizer in the second round.

by Anonymousreply 273March 9, 2022 1:05 AM

He is such a cunt. According to this article, Djokovic is again looking for loopholes and special exemptions despite the US CDC rules and IW regulations making it clear he cannot enter the country or play in the tournament unless he is vaccinated. Why the fuck doesn’t he just play by the rules??

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 279March 9, 2022 8:30 AM

R279 He likes to pretend to be concerned about all the other players like when he set up the PTPA, yet his actions have fucked up the earning potential of a lower ranked player. He knew he couldn't get into the country yet he knew he was taking up the place of someone else in the draw, who could probably do with the money.

by Anonymousreply 280March 9, 2022 9:50 AM

I’m sure if the press start telling people that he’s responsible for some low-ranked player losing earnings, r280, he will very publicly donate millions to lower-ranked tennis players. He’s that sort of turd.

by Anonymousreply 281March 9, 2022 10:59 AM

Because he's a rich, entitled white man. This is what they DO. They think the rules do not apply to them and act accordingly.

by Anonymousreply 282March 9, 2022 12:46 PM

R282 I can't imagine Federer, Nadal, Murray behaving like this. Djokovic is another kind of 'special'.

^^ and I'm not talking about Medvedev, btw

by Anonymousreply 286March 9, 2022 4:53 PM

R284 how tone deaf of him. He surely realizes the Russian flag won't be allowed for some time and for good reason. Let's just hope he doesn't start winning all the hardcourt events. Though from his performance at AO and Acapulco that doesn't seem likely anyway

by Anonymousreply 287March 9, 2022 5:55 PM

Domie is eager to show us all that he’s fine, and also includes a shot that looks like it’s been taken by his asylum nurse while he’s sitting in front of an array of healthy food.

when will we get an announcement that Djokovic has been removed? The male seeds opening rounds are Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully it doesn't go to the last minute like in Australia. I just want to move on and not focus on him. Obviously he's not going to play IW or Miami

by Anonymousreply 290March 9, 2022 6:07 PM

Russian athletes are in a tough spot. You have to think Medvedev has family and friends still in Russia. He can’t go too far in what he says without endangering them.

by Anonymousreply 291March 9, 2022 7:11 PM

It's also not their fault that their president is an evil megalomaniac, just like it wasn't any of our faults when Trump was bringing shame to the White House.

by Anonymousreply 292March 9, 2022 7:15 PM

no it's not his fault but he could just say he hopes there is peace soon or something like

to only focus on not being able to play under the flag is tone deaf

by Anonymousreply 293March 9, 2022 7:18 PM

Of course it's not their fault, but when 45 was blighting the presidential landscape and if he'd invaded Mexico, I wouldn't have chosen that time to talk about how I couldn't wait to see the flag next to my name again. But Isner or Sandgren might have.

by Anonymousreply 294March 9, 2022 7:19 PM

it's actually interesting hearing her tonight with Shriver and Davenport. 3 generations of players. They get along well

Wozniacki actually asked Shriver if she started playing with a wooden racquet haha. Shriver said yes and switched at age 13. She then said she was the first player with the newer racquets to reach a slam final (her only).

Coco is a nice kid. She doesn't deserve the hate that she gets here. Sure American commentators hype her up but she has accomplished a lot for her age and is talented. Will she win slams and be #1? Too early to tell but she's doing just fine

by Anonymousreply 312March 10, 2022 8:03 PM

McDonald vs. Fucsovics is a nice match to watch both for the athleticism and the fact that they're both cute with toned bodies. I think McDonald would do better if he gained about 15 lbs of muscle though. He needs to get more on his shots. Fucsovics has 1 of the best bodies on tour

by Anonymousreply 313March 10, 2022 8:04 PM

Nadal calls for tougher punishment after Zverev case

Rafael Nadal called for tougher sanctions against players who abuse tennis officials on Thursday in the wake of the controversial suspended sentence handed down to Alexander Zverev.

Spanish star Nadal said that as a friend and practice partner of Zverev, he had no desire to see the German Olympic champion receive a stiffer sentence for his violent outburst at last month's Mexico Open in Acapulco.

But the 21-time Grand Slam champion said that as a fan of the sport, tougher sanctions were needed.

Zverev was disqualified from the tournament for repeatedly smashing his racket into the umpire's chair before verbally abusing the official.

On Monday the 24-year-old was given a suspended eight-week ban and $25,000 fine for the incident -- penalties decried as too lenient by some.

Speaking ahead of the ATP/WTA Indian Wells Masters tournament in California on Thursday, Nadal said more stringent punishments should be levied in future.

"It's so difficult to talk in my position because from from one point of view, I have a good relationship with Sascha (Zverev)-- I like him and I practice with him very often," Nadal said.

"I wish him all the very best and he knows that he was wrong, honestly, and he recognized that very early.

"So that's a positive thing in his side, in my opinion.

"On the other hand ... if we're not able to control and create a rule or or a way to penalise this type of attitudes a little bit in a stronger way, then we as a players, we feel stronger and stronger all the time.

"We need to be a positive example, especially for the kids watching us.

"So from one side, I don't want a penalization for Sascha because I like him and I have very good relationship with him.

"In the other hand ... I'd like to see something harder for this kind of attitudes, not only him, I mean in general terms because this protects the sport and protects the referees."

Nadal meanwhile is relishing the opportunity of another campaign in the Californian desert, where he has won three times in the past.

The Spaniard has enjoyed a blistering start to 2022, going unbeaten at 15-0 as well as snaffling his record 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

"It was an unexpected moment for me to be in this position," Nadal said.

"I'm enjoying it every day and trying to stay with the right attitude to enjoy the fact that I'm playing well and enjoying matches and winning titles.

"I have been able to find a way to adapt my game to what I need to be competitive – some days being more aggressive, some days being more tactical, more defensive.

"Then I have been brave enough to play with the right determination in the moments that I needed."

by Anonymousreply 364March 11, 2022 4:37 PM

I wonder what Nadal thinks of players bullying umpires who enforce the rules on a player, like say for a time violation? Ha! But Nadal is right, Zverev should have gotten a harsher penalty.

by Anonymousreply 382March 12, 2022 6:41 PM

Yes, hot pink's the new look Fila is promoting for the men. Fortunately McDonald wears it well. Some of the other players...not so much.

by Anonymousreply 383March 12, 2022 6:41 PM

This is my report from going Thursday and Friday:

Started out by watching Rafa and Titsy practice for a few minutes.

The Mackie McDonald/Fucsovic match. I was in the nosebleeds on Stadium 1, and even then Marton's legs looked beautiful. I have a crush on Mackenzie, and was happy he won.

Second match was, of course, Borna Coric/Davidovich-Fokina - You queens would never forgive me for missing our favorite "Porna." He's just as hot in person. His grunt was even sexy and deep in person. I had many impure thoughts during that match.

After that I watched the Cressy/Eubanks match with the crazy shank underspin ace. All day Thursday it was really windy, and all the ball tosses were being pushed everywhere. Chris Eubanks is very likable. He interacted with the crowd, and seemed pretty affable. He's thin as a rail. More of a sprinter's body than a tennis player.

Popyrin/Machac - I didn't have evening passes, so I stuck to the matches in the other courts. Alexei Popyrin is also very thin, but his calves looked really nice. One thing I noticed I noticed that even super skinny players with chicken legs on TV actually have really nice defined calves that would look hot and big on even a non-tennis player.

Last match for me on Thursday was Kokkinakis/Korda. Thanassi is fucking sexy. I want carnal knowledge of him. I would totally worship his legs. It was so cold and windy on Thursday night that I left for my hotel after the first set.

Friday - It was so nice yesterday in the desert. No more wind, and just a slight constant breeze. Perfect weather to watch, and play tennis.

Started off with the Andy Murray match. That was a fun one, even from the nosebleeds. Not much to say other than it was pretty entertaining. When Andy would have an unforced error he would yell "RUBBISH!!" which I found oddly funny.

Next was Jordan "Porn 'Stache" Thompson and David "Elfin" Goffin. I can see why they call David the elf. He's a very slight 5'11". He looked like he could have been knocked over by a stiff....wind. Jordan was oddly sexy - Not really the type I'd go for, but that Aussie charm shone through.

I stuck around on stadium 5 to catch DL's favorite homophobic twink tennis player Holger Rune dismantle Ugo Humbert. Holger is a BEAST. Beautiful big legs/calves, and a cute smile to boot. Again, TV/pictures just don't do justice to pro tennis player's legs - even the ostensibly skinny guys.

After a quick bite, I caught the Kygrios/Kokkinakis doubles match on Stadium 2. This stadium doesn't have a bad seat in the house for something damn big. I sat in front of a gay couple who had to be DL'ers. We chatted, and I overheard them talking about Tina Louise. I had to assume they're on this site. The match itself was fun too. You can tell Nick and Thannassi were having a lot of fun, and that made it fun for the whole crowd. They were obviously loved by the crowd.

That was my last match of the two days out in the desert. I can't wait until next year!

by Anonymousreply 384March 12, 2022 7:21 PM

R384 - thanks so much for the report. Very entertaining!

by Anonymousreply 385March 12, 2022 7:26 PM

R384 glad you enjoyed yourself. Did Kyrgios grab Kokkinakis' ass again during or after the match?

by Anonymousreply 386March 12, 2022 7:43 PM

Nadal has withdrawn from Miami even if he does poorly in IW. Obviously he's never won Miami and now wants to focus on the clay season

by Anonymousreply 387March 12, 2022 7:45 PM

R384 in person whose ball striking impressed you the most?

by Anonymousreply 388March 12, 2022 7:46 PM

"old school" tennis lovers, anyone remember Jakob Hlasek! damn, what a blond nordic beaut he was.. total runway handsome he was...

along with the other handsomeness back in the day, johan kriek, tim mayotte, fernando gonzales, roscoe tanner, etc..

by Anonymousreply 389March 12, 2022 7:54 PM

Sabalenka upset in 3 by Paolini

by Anonymousreply 390March 12, 2022 7:58 PM

R389 - I'd totally forgotten all about Hlasek. Yes, he was gorgeous. Piercing blue eyes, I recall, great bone structure and a beautiful physique.

by Anonymousreply 391March 12, 2022 8:00 PM

Less classically handsome than Hlaskek, but I always found Mats Wilander to be very sexy in the 80s.

We were quite spoiled for choice, back then, looking back.

by Anonymousreply 392March 12, 2022 8:08 PM

R388 I would say Holger Rune - especially his backhand, Alexei Popyrin (even though he lost.)

by Anonymousreply 393March 12, 2022 8:10 PM

ha Courier just referred to JJ Wolf as "sturdy and strong". Wolf of course is wearing a tank top and shorts that aren't that long

by Anonymousreply 394March 12, 2022 8:12 PM

I remember Hlasek and the others you've mentioned from the 80s, R389. My tastes back then ran more toward Rostagno, Cash, Noah, Oresar, Grabb, and the dozen or so Swedes who dominated the rankings with the Americans.

Nadal team or Korda team?

by Anonymousreply 396March 12, 2022 8:42 PM

I'm sick of Nadal winning but

not a fan of Korda. He's got the game but not the charisma. I hate the entitlement too.

I'd prefer if someone else stopped Nadal's win streak this tournament

by Anonymousreply 397March 12, 2022 8:51 PM

Aww r397 how can you not like Sebi? He's one of my favorite newbies.

by Anonymousreply 398March 12, 2022 9:40 PM

Did Seb soil his panties?

by Anonymousreply 399March 12, 2022 9:45 PM

I would like to see Korda play Zverev since their games are so similar. Taller guys with good first serves, good movers, amazing backhands and potent forehands that can go off when they're nervous.

by Anonymousreply 400March 12, 2022 9:47 PM

LMFAO 2 break lead in the final set GONE

these boys continue to choke on Nadal's dick

by Anonymousreply 401March 12, 2022 9:54 PM

Nadal is fighting the son of a doper.

by Anonymousreply 402March 12, 2022 10:00 PM

The commentators are creaming their points and I'm just sitting here tired of seeing this dude always come back against guys many years younger than him.

by Anonymousreply 403March 12, 2022 10:03 PM

this reminds me of when Zverev choked against Nadal at IW early in his career

by Anonymousreply 404March 12, 2022 10:06 PM

Meant to say pants. I'll add Rafa will probably be pulling this crap till hes 40

by Anonymousreply 405March 12, 2022 10:07 PM

Nadal defeats Seb in a third-set tiebreak.

by Anonymousreply 406March 12, 2022 10:14 PM

Yay NaDAL

by Anonymousreply 407March 12, 2022 10:14 PM

yup lol Korda is baby Zverev though hopefully not an abusive asshole

forehand broke down from 5-2 up and stayed off

Nadal's insane comeback from behind continues. Shapovalov, Medvedev, Korda who's next

by Anonymousreply 408March 12, 2022 10:15 PM

I'm so fucking sick of Nadal I could scream

by Anonymousreply 409March 12, 2022 10:16 PM

Obviously Nadal hit some crazy shots and stepped up but Korda choked hard. I know its cliche to say but I think he will learn from this loss with how to close out matches in that position.

by Anonymousreply 410March 12, 2022 10:16 PM

i want to see Meddy and Nadal in SF and lets see if dude can get his rematch win.

by Anonymousreply 411March 12, 2022 10:17 PM

RAFA

by Anonymousreply 412March 12, 2022 10:17 PM

r409 is Djokovic. Your own damn fault.

by Anonymousreply 413March 12, 2022 10:18 PM

up next for Nadal will be flashy Evans but he of course has a 1 handed backhand and Nadal loves to hit high forehands over and over again. Evans isn't tall either so it'll be tough

by Anonymousreply 414March 12, 2022 10:18 PM

To be fair though players choke so often against Nadal cause he is such a fighter and forces them in the position where the chance to choke the match away greatly increases

by Anonymousreply 415March 12, 2022 10:19 PM

unless you don't have a good serve, you should never lose a set with a 2 break lead. Korda has a decent serve. The fact that he failed to close it out both times is pathetic but predictable these last 17 years on the ATP

by Anonymousreply 416March 12, 2022 10:21 PM

It does get to a point that I dont care how incredible the big 3 are because the amount of time guys fall apart against them when they are in winning positions is embarrassing for mens tennis.

by Anonymousreply 417March 12, 2022 10:24 PM

Rafa looks injured to me… I think Cames is onto something.

by Anonymousreply 418March 12, 2022 10:28 PM

That's bizarre. Typically Rafa is only injured after a loss, not a win.

by Anonymousreply 419March 12, 2022 10:31 PM

Would love to see Ukraine-adjacent Monfils take out tone-deaf Medvedev next round and then meet Alcaraz in the round of 16.

by Anonymousreply 420March 12, 2022 11:01 PM

Rafa was limping a bit towards the end of the third set and immediately following the match.

by Anonymousreply 421March 12, 2022 11:13 PM

[quote]these boys continue to choke on Nadal's dick

To be so honored!

by Anonymousreply 422March 13, 2022 12:03 AM

Glad the bigger crowds have returned after last season's fall edition. I had a ton of fun the times I attended IW.

by Anonymousreply 423March 13, 2022 12:31 AM

I knew there was no way Jack Sock was going to win. Even with the tiebreak handed to him.

by Anonymousreply 424March 13, 2022 3:43 AM

how did Sock land a beautiful blonde wife???....

it isn't for his looks or body that's for sure... Is she a proverbial gold digger?...and he's the best she can trick and get?

by Anonymousreply 425March 13, 2022 3:46 AM

HO HUM! The usual.. a "next gen" player has nadal (it's usually nadal isn't it) on the ropes and VOILA! can't get a first serve in, unforced errors, bonehead plays, and so on and so on...mental midgets all of them!...

meanwhile we have to listen to those 2 fops haber and courier yap non stop, yap, yap, yap!....

by Anonymousreply 426March 13, 2022 3:50 AM

[quote] how did Sock land a beautiful blonde wife???....

If you ever view her Instagram account, she's pretty much a Hooters' waitress bimbo. They're both trash and thus made for each other.

by Anonymousreply 427March 13, 2022 3:52 AM

I didn't realize Alex Bogomolov Jr was coaching Sock. He's still cute

by Anonymousreply 428March 13, 2022 3:56 AM

Brooksby demolished Khachanov 6-0 6-3 wow

by Anonymousreply 429March 13, 2022 3:56 AM

R427... well, it sounds like yes, they are both trash (no doubt trump lovers!) and yes, she is a gold digger....

R4278.. is he the brown haired guy with the beard sitting in the middle of tsitsipas group? he's a cutie...

by Anonymousreply 430March 13, 2022 3:59 AM

Sock's wife wears so much makeup it makes her look older than she is. I think she was a Miss Teen North Carolina or something. She must be disappointed she can't be a full time tennis wife because Sock is basically just a glorified doubles specialist now.

Like, um, why?

by Anonymousreply 433March 13, 2022 4:31 AM

someone yelled "osaka you suck"

She cried just like that. what is she? 5 yr old?

by Anonymousreply 434March 13, 2022 4:33 AM

[quote] what is she? 5 yr old?

Emotionally and mentally yes.

by Anonymousreply 435March 13, 2022 4:39 AM

she got a bagel.

in future, Osaka's opponent should hire someone to call out something similar to what was uttered. it will be a cakewalk.

by Anonymousreply 436March 13, 2022 4:41 AM

Did someone say cake?

by Anonymousreply 437March 13, 2022 4:43 AM

I’m autistic, and we don’t want her much like we as gays don’t want Aaron Rodgers among our ranks.

Gosh, Osaka is so frustrating. She has sooo much talent.

I feel for her. I do. But it's annoying.

She really should just retire. Invest her money wisely. We all know she can't become a, um, commentator.

by Anonymousreply 441March 13, 2022 5:25 AM

was some deplorable heckling Naomi?

sucks but she needs to toughen up

right wingers are going to hate anyone who doesn't support their lies and bigotry

by Anonymousreply 442March 13, 2022 5:30 AM

this tournament has been nuts on the WTA side, so many top players are out already, including the Incredible Hulk girl.

also, there's some drama going on with Anisimova - her coach Darren Cahill abruptly quit after only working with her 1-2 months. She was in tears during the second set against Fernandez even though she won the 1st set and seemed to be in control. When she lost the tiebreaker of the 2nd set 7-0 she just got her bags and walked off court, didn't seem to be injured.

by Anonymousreply 443March 13, 2022 5:32 AM

I used to love Osaka, but have lost so much respect for her. She is a poor sport. If this were a white woman crying after being heckled, she would be labeled a Karen and using white woman tears to take away from her opponent’s deserved victory.

by Anonymousreply 444March 13, 2022 5:35 AM

bizarre from Cahill.

by Anonymousreply 445March 13, 2022 5:36 AM

I was just about to call Animositova a diva but glad I didn't even though I just did I guess.

by Anonymousreply 446March 13, 2022 5:44 AM

Apparently Osaka wanted to use the umpire's microphone to say something to the crowd when someone yelled out at her. She wouldn't tell the umpire what she wanted to say though, and got refused.

by Anonymousreply 447March 13, 2022 5:51 AM

I'm glad the heckler got booed though. Naomi only had to deal with 1 heckler. I get it that a heckler can disturb your concentration and shake your confidence. Just imagine what Serena and Venus went through in 2001 when it wasn't just person-it was at least half the crowd or even more. I get why Naomi thought of that moment but it wasn't the same as tonight. Plenty of players have a heckler or 2 which isn't right especially if the player is not doing anything obnoxious. Say what you want about Osaka but she doesn't act like a jerk. We're not talking about Paire or Zverev or Kyrgios throwing tantrums or Medvedev trash talking. She was just playing and someone shouted out "Naomi you suck"

by Anonymousreply 448March 13, 2022 5:55 AM

At the end of the match even though she lost, Osaka insisted on taking the microphone and talked about race. I thought it was unsporting to make it all about herself when Kudermetova had won the match.

by Anonymousreply 449March 13, 2022 7:01 AM

she congratulated Kudermetova

by Anonymousreply 450March 13, 2022 7:16 AM

Gee people in Ukraine, fleeing their homes don't have it as tough as a multi-millionaire, who gets triggered by some drunk at a tennis match. Osaka probably planted the heckler. BJK and Martina had to endure horrible slurs when they came out. I don't remember them tanking, though Martina would get teary. No one needs to be lectured by her.

by Anonymousreply 451March 13, 2022 11:52 AM

Osaka isn’t allowed to be upset as long as someone somewhere in the world has it worse off than her?

Osaka is upset. All the time. She can't even handle interview questions. Maybe she's too woke to be a competitive athlete.

by Anonymousreply 454March 15, 2022 2:11 PM

Osaka needs to toughen up ....she is so soft

by Anonymousreply 455March 16, 2022 8:41 PM

"Osaka is upset. All the time. She can't even handle interview questions. Maybe she's too woke to be a competitive athlete. "

There may be some truth to that. She's very sensitive, and with the media obligations, exposure, and of course social media, it may all be too much for her. That's a huge part of being a top athlete. I don't think being "woke" really plays into it. I guess if "woke" means "living your truth" and leaning into your established identity - them maybe. She seems to really lean into "I'm sensitive and this is all triggering and I don't want to do it." I don't doubt she actually feels that, but maybe instead of leaning into it, try to overcome it. Get a psychologist to help you learn not to give a fuck what other people think or do. That fan outburst was obnoxious as fuck, but shouldn't cause her to come unglued.
