Britneys fans are right about some things ( the conservatorship was questionable, the paparazzi and media were truly disgusting towards her, etc) . But the animosity some of them have towards Jamielynn is insane. What was some uneducated hillbilly teen already raising her own kid supposed to do about Britneys situation? She had no more power ( or intellect) than her sibling. Beyoncé stans. She has been irrelevant for almost 5 years now so I hope her stand finally realize that she’s hugely overrated

There's a weird anti-stan that posts on DL about some former boy-band loser (whose name is unfamiliar to me) and his clique of friends. This person appears to be pretending to be two people who converse at length about how fat the boy band person and his friends are. They always start the thread and then thank themselves for starting it. It's a bit disturbing, like watching someone slap themselves and mutter curses as they shamble down the street.
There is also a rabid creature that will interpret any negative reference to Johnny Depp as somehow being planted by Amber Heard or a close associate/admirer of hers. The concept that someone can think they're both gross seems to be impossible to convey to this thing.
The Rocco Ritchie stan is a bit off-putting, if only because Rocco Ritchie seems like such a non-entity. It's like having the hots for Sesame Street's Grover.
Out in the wider world, I've noticed that the RDJ stans are very fetishistic. They go into raptures about how "tiny" he is. I mean, I like him too and I don't mind a pocket-sized guy myself, but they take it to very strange extremes.
Actually, any white dude in the Marvel Universe has about 4,000 semi-porno drawings of a cartoon version of himself in deep gay love with the rest of them. I guess it makes sense that a comic book world attracts people who make comic book art. It just seems strange that nearly all of it is gay-oriented.
I have never delved into it, but circumstantial evidence suggests that the world of online make-up tutorials is a pit of ultimate evil.

A lot of the social media fan groups have been overwhelmed by people who aren't actually stans but are using the cover of being a stan to be abusive.
Taylor Swift fans were already a handful, but groypers and similar types showed up a couple of years ago and started posing as stans, so you'd get scenarios where someone would post something mostly benign about Swift, and they'd get overwhelmed with nasty tweets from stans PLUS death threats and racist slurs from the others.
Johnny Depp stans on Twitter are frequently old accounts that are also Michael Jackson stans. It's very weird and looks like it's actually a bunch of bot accounts owned by a company that first used them for paid MJ trolling, then used for JD, and now seem to have gone full far-right MRA conspiracy theorist. If they show up in your replies, expect "we'll take care of you, we know where you live" comments paired with gifs with guns.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | February 16, 2022 5:22 PM |
Bizarre, R50.
There's some crossover between Depp and RDJ stans on Twitter as well, but they seem more benign. More like "deranged cat lady with multiple restraining orders" types.

The stan thing really concerns me. I cannot fathom how people can become so obsessed and emotional over some celebrity. I couldn't even bring myself to be that way about someone I know personally. I've noticed young women are especially susceptible to becoming part of these intense fanbases and it will take over their lives like a cult. But often they do grow out of it especially when they get a real relationship and career. Most intense pop stans are still young women, straight and lesbian. Annoying gay queens are really just a vocal minority. I guess my theory is since young girls feel a lack of control in their lives, obsession over a famous celebrity gives them a sense of control. A lot of women are far religious and into astrology than men are for similar reasons
by Anonymous | reply 64 | February 17, 2022 1:31 AM |
R57 MAGAts are more akin to obnoxious sports fans. For them, It's about tribalism and screwing over the opposite side at the expense of their benefit. It's purely driven out of spite and revenge. It's not like stans who are often naive young girls or emotionally immature older women who are intensely infatuated with a male celebrity or live vicariously through an attractive female one.

Yes. The Beatles, Rudolph Valentino, James Dean, Ricky Nelson and Elvis Presley had insane fangirls who would faint at their sight and they would stalk them too. Valentino and Dean's early demises led to a mass suicide.
Franz Liszt, Lord Byron and Roman gladiators, etc all had insane fandoms too. So it goes back farther than film and TV.

Way before BTS became popular and introduced Kpop to a far broader audience. I knew some Kpop stans and they were always obsessive, intense and seemed mentally ill inn their delusions. I thought Kpop would never get bigger than a niche but somehow BTS blew up and got on American mainstream radio. Now most of the West is aware of the insanity of Kpop stanbases. It's not just young girls, older women are hooked too. Some men are obsessed with it but their obsession is more on the waifish Asian babes.

R76 Yeah. But celebrity worship syndrome mostly affects young girls who make up majority of the fanbases. Those gays that are obsessed with them are feminine-aligned thus live vicariously through their divas. Masculine gay men have no interest in stanning female divas.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | February 17, 2022 2:34 AM |
Off topic, but I was really surprised that the DL consensus is that Jeremy Renner is ugly. I think he has a tight little body and beautiful eyes; he's not conventionally good-looking, sure, but there's a boyish/rugged quality to him I find very appealing. I liked him as Hawkeye in the Marvel films and though he was quite moving in Endgame.

Or, check a car guy's garage. Or a gamer's room in his mom's basement. Or, any of the male stalker's walls filled with pictures of his latest obsession.
They obsess over different things but men are just as likely to be obsessively crazed with their interests.

Sports is more of a communal and historical thing I feel. It's like religious indoctrination as you are often raised to support the team of your school, home state or city. Also given the fact sports is supported by local communities and children are encouraged to participate from a young age. It's also a huge industry, young men often can education from sports scholarships and money from getting into professional sports. It's goes more like religion or nationalism than stanning. Sports games are like wars.

There's a woman on youtube who talks about crap childhoods causing people, especially girls, to devolve into a fantasy world in order to protect themselves - from whatever, family trauma, bullying, abuse - and then it becomes a lifelong habit, and they don't develop the skills to deal with adulthood so they just stay in fantasy, often a "fandom" - they find likeminded people and it makes it less likely they'll wake up out of the weird way of life they developed when they needed it to survive. The romantic obsessions are called "limerance" - link to a video about it

It’s safe for them. They can act out their sexual frustration in masturbatory fanfic and not get pregnant. Men like to look at images and videos of people having full on sex. Females prefer romantic fantasy with lots of hugging & kissing and a little bit of rubbing. They’re not turned on by a lot of sweaty pounding. It’s just the way things are. R84 - Rodent-like is a fair point, although I think an attractive rodent. . . but hardly small.
He's 6'2" and notoriously rather well-endowed where it counts.
When he had his curly hair he was quite toothsome.
Now, of course, he's forty and looks more like the don all the freshers fall in love with.

Cumberbatch's early coven of stans were easily as mental as Hiddleston's Dragonflies.
They're still at it. They still think his wife has a criminal past as a people trafficker, that their two kids are props, and that she blackmailed a CoE vicar to perform an illegal marriage as well as the obstetric staff of the Portland Hospital.
In other words, they still can't accept the fact that he actually fucked her.

Cumberbatch had the most insane stans during the Sherlock years, I kind of felt sorry for him.

There was a collective Timotay Stan psychosis beginning in 2017 and lasting throughout 2018 here on DL.
At one point in early 2018, threads were filling up every two days. Threads close at 600, so that was fan insanity at a fever pitch.
There were at least 50 of them by the beginning of 2019 with new ones (different subjects) being started almost every day until Muriel started paywalling and/or deleting them. The vast majority of the posts were from females ranging in age from their early teens to mid-forties. Crazy cunt hordes who were occupying a huge corner of DL at the time.
There was no such thing as a rational discussion with any of them.

BTS stans are absolutely the worst. luckily they identify themselves with a 7 on Twitter, so it's easy to block them on sight. I've blocked hundreds of them at this point
Taylor Swift and Elon Musk stans are good picks and are probably the next worse. KHive and BeyHive are also pretty annoying I guess.

[Quote] Actually, any white dude in the Marvel Universe has about 4,000 semi-porno drawings of a cartoon version of himself in deep gay love with the rest of them. I guess it makes sense that a comic book world attracts people who make comic book art. It just seems strange that nearly all of it is gay-oriented.
That's not just a Marvel thing. Never heard of Rule 34?

[quote] The fucking Froy stans too. Never heard of that twink until I saw the million of DL threads on him.
R102 On the flip side, don't underestimate the Richard Madden stans. Most of the hubbub around Froy actually comes from them first.

The "Cumberbitches" were the worst pop culture fandom of recent years, as I don't count the Trump loons as a fandom, that's too mild a word for traitors.
But the Cumberbitches were on another level of crazy, as the TV Sherlock was a "high functioning sociopath" and attractive but seemingly asexual, and that led every aneurotypical, asexual, personality disordered, batshit crazy, or just fucked-up bitch with a computer to completely lose touch with reality. I've never seen so many crazy people together outside of a psych ward, they were (are?) one of these internet groups that have formed the kind of batshit echo chamber that generates conspiracy theories and true believers, and sure enough! They came up with their very own conspiracy theories about Mrs. C.

I loved the Sherlock show (or certain episodes, anyway) and thought Cumberbatch and Freeman were both great in it, but they did seem to be catnip for freaks.

What I find interesting is it is clear that both men and women are objectified especially famous celebrities since they are marketed and promoted as sex symbols and ideal partners. Though the only talk is of men objectifying women which is certainly an issue and very much true. But little talk is of how women objectify famous men and other women as well and as women are becoming more affluent and influential in the media, we are seeing more and more of it.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | February 20, 2022 1:36 AM |
I think the problem with objectification of women is that historically it's been seen as the only value women have - as objects, either to desire or to possess.
Men have never been limited. Yeah, they can be objectified but it doesn't limit them as much - and they have all avenues open to them and always have - scholars, entrepreneurs, attorneys, artisans, politicians, you name it, the world's their oyster.
For millenia, for the vast majority of women, it was be objectified, be wives and mothers, or whores. End of. With very few exceptions - and then, only the rich daughters of rich men, who might write books or own property in their own right.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | February 20, 2022 1:42 AM |
R140 Yes. Men in power controlled the narrative and women were reduced to being valued only for their beauty, sex appeal and ability to mother. Even in Ancient Greece and Rome where the male body was considered beautiful and sexually objectified, men were considered more intelligent and disciplined capable of true love and kindness. Women were seen as animalistic, hysterical, always angry and actually more lustful and vengeful. So while men and women were both viewed as beautiful, men were valued more for their ability to provide, protect and rule while the only value women were given was being a sex object or mother, basically property.
I think due to the industrial revolution and rise of disposable income among working class women who went out to the movies and music halls. The media industries saw a market push handsome young actors and singers to young women. Even more so in the 1940s and 1950s with the rise of teen idols like James Dean, Frank Sinatra, Ricky Nelson and Elvis Presley and the newly formed teenager identity. Since girls were taught to repress their sexuality, these images of handsome men and forming a fanatic obsession was their outlet. Even today, we still see this with boy bands and Kpop. Those teen magazines with suggestive pinups of the young male celebs and intimate details about their lives. These young guys are sexualized and objectified for profit. And you can see that in fanfiction and fanart too.
Even older women are indulging in stuff like 50 Shades of Grey, Magic Mike and other male eye candy. I think now as women are catching up to men in financial and social power. We will see more male objectification. I see a lot of younger guys are more vain and prettying themselves now. Being more fashion-conscious, taking suggestive poses, taking good care of their hair and skin and obsessively working out. So younger men are putting more value in their looks in hopes of impressing young women while historically that pressure was mostly on the young woman.

There's also more of a danger component present in men who obsess over women. Or, even men who obsess over other men. They're the ones that show up with guns and shoot their obsessions so no one else can have them, like Rebecca Shaeffer.

Beyhive is so annoying. Beyonce is talented but nothing special and certainly not worthy of worship. She's always been overrated and overexposed. It seemed random as hell, she got this massive fanbase on Twitter. They first got attention back in 2010 for attacking Keri Hilson in public after she dissed Beyonce.

"What I find interesting is it is clear that both men and women are objectified especially famous celebrities since they are marketed and promoted as sex symbols and ideal partners. "
I've put in enough fandom hours to have the opinion that straight women objectify their male idols in a different way than straight men objectify women. Straight men tend to think of attractive women as in terms of sex only, while straight women project *all* of their feelings onto the attractive man they're fangurling. They use him to live out their fantasy of true romance, success, beauty, or sex appeal, they exaggerate any feminine characteristics and basically turn him into a woman and "slash" him with a butcher attractive celebrity, they dig into his private life and try to imagine his thoughts and crucial points in his life.
The last is a lot creepier and more intrusive than just wanting to fuck someone, particularly when they begin to fight with each other over whose fantasy projection or intrusion into someone's private life is the True Fandom Vision. If the celebrities ever read this crap, they'll all live in Idaho bunkers.

R151 This is the perfect description of the Richard Madden/Froy fans (particularly the Madden fans, especially on tumblr) who not only live vicariously through their relationship, but act like they literally know everything that's going on, and how dare you ever question their expertise.

A lot of religions start out of fandoms of alleged prophets (Buddhism, Taoism, Sikhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam) who may or may not have existed. And once they expand outside of a narrow group. They develop into complex systems that dominate public life. Shifting from a cult to being public rituals and ideology and even coopted by the state as a national religion.
