Jeremy Brett

Let's Discuss.

Famed stage actor Jeremy Brett does not get much attention.

He was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, in several classic films, and the best iteration of Sherlock Holmes.

Yet, Brett is forgotten about.

A manic depressive bipolar bisexual who was married twice, Brett died in 1995 at 61 of a heart failure.

He was both manic depressive and bipolar?

Jeremy Brett was quite beautiful for a brief second. He seemed to have aged rapidly and looked older than his years.

R1 yes, yes he was.

R2 I agree. He was a gorgeous man. Below is him as Hamlet.

I saw him playing a drugged-out Sherlock Holmes on stage in London. There were more people on stage than in the audience. I got his autograph at the stage door - he seemed annoyed at having to do them.

He looks like a ghoul, in the violin photo! Yikes!

by Anonymousreply 5February 14, 2022 10:15 PM

R3. What is the difference?

by Anonymousreply 6February 14, 2022 10:18 PM

"Alimentary, my dear Watson."

by Anonymousreply 7February 14, 2022 10:56 PM

I liked him as Audrey Hepburn’s older brother in the 1956 “War and Peace.”

by Anonymousreply 8February 14, 2022 11:32 PM

Like Audrey, his singing voice was dubbed in My Fair Lady.

Not by Marni Nixon, however.

Too bad he did not become a big star.

by Anonymousreply 11February 15, 2022 1:07 AM

He was a brilliant Sherlock Holmes. The best Sherlock ever for me. Unfortunately he didn’t leave much of a legacy you can see now. Sherlock and My Fair Lady are the only things I’ve seen him in.

R12 He was Jonathan Harker in Dracula with Frank Langella, Donald Pleasance, and Lord Laurence Olivier. Both the stage and movie.

by Anonymousreply 13February 15, 2022 1:12 AM

R13, he was not in that movie. The role of Jonathan Harker was played by Trevor Eve.

by Anonymousreply 14February 15, 2022 1:20 AM

R14 Maybe it was the original movie.

He and Lynn Redgrave were terrific on stage on Broadway in1985 in "Aren't We All?" by Fredrick Lonsdale, who was a British writer among the lines the 1920s British Neil Simon. They were the real leads, but the notable top-billed stars, in supporting roles, were Rex Harrison and Claudette Colbert.

OP, fuck you. Jeremy Brett isn't forgotten, and you don't know enough about him to do anything but embarrass his name.

It's just too bad that his psychological health collapsed. The cover story for his death was not convincing, either.

The best Holmes in theatrical history.

by Anonymousreply 17February 15, 2022 1:32 AM

I thought he died of AIDS.

by Anonymousreply 18June 25, 2022 6:02 PM

British men age like MILK, I tell you.

A pity.

by Anonymousreply 19June 25, 2022 6:29 PM

He did not age well

by Anonymousreply 20June 25, 2022 6:33 PM

Love him as Sherlock and in My Fair Lady

by Anonymousreply 21November 8, 2023 2:48 AM

Despite his great looks Jeremy Brett aged very quickly, by his mid thirties he was already looking much older than his years. Tyrone Power was the same way, by the time he died at age 44, he looked closer to 60.

A bad heart shows itself around the eyes.

by Anonymousreply 23November 8, 2023 3:00 AM

R22 years of heavy smoking and drinking!

by Anonymousreply 24November 8, 2023 3:04 AM

Both of the men mentioned as his partners in Wikipedia died of AIDS.

by Anonymousreply 25November 8, 2023 3:06 AM

Brett was great as Sherlock Holmes on PBS

by Anonymousreply 26November 8, 2023 3:15 AM

Apparently Jeremy Brett had rheumatic fever as a child that affected his heart, so that along with the bad lifestyle contributed to his accelerated aging.

by Anonymousreply 27November 8, 2023 3:22 AM

Best Sherlock ever. Who was a maniac depressive too. He looked really sick in the later episodes, put on a lot of weight.

by Anonymousreply 28November 8, 2023 3:23 AM

I read somewhere that the medication he used to treat his Bipolar Disorder caused him to gain weight or retain fluids, which made him tired and sluggish. I think that, and his smoking, affected his general health and appearance. Still, he was a fantastic actor and the best Sherlock Holmes we ever had.

by Anonymousreply 29November 8, 2023 3:45 AM

R10: 221-B Baker Street.

Sorry, DL, but Basil Rathbone reigns supreme as Sherlock Holmes.

by Anonymousreply 30November 8, 2023 4:36 AM

Nooooo, R30. Rathbone‘s Holmes is not psychotic enough to be interesting y
