So glad this popped up because I gave a friend of mine shit for a similar reason.
Hiring a person to come and clean your home is going to result in breakage. You don't get to pick what they break by accident. You don't get to dock their pay when it happens. And in thsi case, you should be more responsible with dry clean only items like that because most people would never think not to wash a pair of socks. That's definitely on you.

by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 14, 2022 8:48 PM |
I let a cleaning person go once for breaking my things around my house. I let it go the first time but drew my line when she broke an antique hakata doll that I asked her not to touch.
So, yeah, I get where you're coming from, Op.

Is she your cleaning woman or your maid?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 14, 2022 8:55 PM |
Why don’t you have a Dry Clean Only bag? It sucks, especially when it’s irreplaceable, but they are your things and your responsibility when you invite someone to clean and wash things in your home. Not all cleaners are good at every aspect of cleaning, they also get interrupted, distracted and make human mistakes. Not to mention that some don’t own the same fabrics and don’t understand. Special things need special handling and that means setting rules and giving instructions beforehand. Their failure to meet those requirements after being educated is then a fireable offense either because they don’t get it or they don’t care.

Socks are tacky? Good to know!
by Anonymous | reply 60 | February 15, 2022 2:21 AM |
First, OP, you're a fool for spending $200 on a pair of socks.
If you are going to have help, here are a few lessons I earned from my Mom: 1. Most important is to have honest and dependable people. 2. Don't expect too much. You want the place clean. It does not have to be spotless. 3. If you don't want something ruined in the wash, do not put it in the hamper with the rest of your dirty clothes. 4. If you really like the job the person does, pay a little extra. That way she/he will come back. 5. However, if your cleaning lady/gent goes to several people you know or are your neighbors, you don't want to price them out of her/his services. 6. DO NOT CRITICIZE!

by Anonymous | reply 75 | February 15, 2022 2:55 PM |
As fun as it might be to pile on, I’d be livid if a cleaning woman threw my $200 socks in the washing machine. She’s supposed to be a professional, and that requires paying attention to care instructions on clothing if washing is a part of your duties. OP actually hits on a general problem without a lot of occupations these days—people do a mediocre job, get paid as agreed, and then get offended when they’re called out for doing something wrong.
Ruining a pair of expensive socks might not be a fireable offense, but OP has a right to be pissed.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | February 15, 2022 3:24 PM |
I spent £23 on cashmere socks once, and I thought THAT was spendy. You put me to shame, OP, but I still don't have any sympathy for you. Hide your valuables from the help, until you trust them with your life! Only then can they handle your precious sock collection.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | February 15, 2022 3:24 PM |

Maybe I'm shopping in all the wrong places, but I have never seen a sock with care instructions.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | February 15, 2022 3:27 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 86 | February 15, 2022 6:06 PM |
I wore silk socks back in the 80s. I thought I was so chic. Of course they went with my silk shirts and silk slacks. God I must have looked so very try hard ! I could see letting a cleaning woman wash sheets or towels, but I dont want anyone washing my clothing. Im very particular about that.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | February 15, 2022 6:07 PM |
When I had a maid years ago, I did not let her operate my washer and dryer.
The night before she came, I washed and dried everything the proper way and dumped the laundry on the bed in another bedroom. She folded everything and put its away.
Look into doing this, OP. It'll save you both a lot of grief.

I don’t let the housekeeper touch my clothing because I’m very particular about my things. She does the bedding and towels only. However, my partner’s mother visited us 15 years ago (when we first moved in together) and washed our entire dry clean only basket with warm or hot water. My $700 Dolce & Gabbana wool sweater shrunk to the size of a toddlers. She had the nerve to hang it in the closet, like nothing happened. Several other items were ruined, but they weren’t as expensive. I didn’t ask her to reimburse me, because it would’ve caused a lot of drama and partner said she would dislike me if she knew how much I spent on a sweater, lol. She broke our Dyson vacuum cleaner a year later (she gets bored when she sits at our house while we are working). We have now told her not to touch or clean anything. I would let your housekeeper know what happened, and make sure she doesn’t touch your clothing again. You can’t really make her reimburse you. It’s the cost of having help.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | February 15, 2022 6:34 PM |
Dry clean only items should not be put in the hamper. And just where were you recently to wear those grotesque sockettes?
