Was he considered a sex symbol in the 70s?
I ask because I just watched WESTWORLD and was surprised how often he was in a state of undress.
BTW, I loved him in THE LAST OF SHEILA.

Maybe to his wife? He was nerdy and annoying in "Diary of a Mad Houswife."
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 13, 2022 5:17 AM |
He had funny-looking, droopy nipples.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 13, 2022 5:17 AM |
He doesn't shy from abrasive roles R1.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 13, 2022 5:19 AM |
It was during the quirky looking leading men period, OP. Gould, Sutherland, Dustin...
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 13, 2022 5:21 AM |
Always mildly shocked that he is heterosexual.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 13, 2022 5:23 AM |
He's very cute in GOODBYE COLUMBUS (and the young Ali McGraw is just stunningly beautiful).
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 13, 2022 5:24 AM |
His nose is just a millimeter too long. And his chin a millimeter too short.

[quote] a state of undress.
I can't see anything on Google.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 13, 2022 5:41 AM |
Well, he married a sex symbol.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 13, 2022 5:45 AM |
I don't think that he had much sex appeal. Not terrible looking, but not sexy.

Adam Scott reminds me of Richard Benjamin.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 26, 2022 2:10 PM |
That he did R9
They're still married. The kids came out homely in case anyone was wondering.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 26, 2022 2:13 PM |
NO, NO and NO. Richard Benjamin was quite a good actor - He and She, Goodbye Columbus, The Sunshine Boys, Westworld, Portnoy's Complaint, Diary of a Mad Housewife - but he was never considered sexy, desirable or even a "leading man" such other ethnics like Dustin Hoffman and Elliott Gould (for a year) were in the 1970s.
The line where Raquel Welch calls Benjamin "the world's most attractive man" in The Last of Sheila, got big laughs in the movie theater where I saw it in 1973.

He was never in the slightest bit cute - but this is DL, so this is to be expected.

No one ever said Dustin Hoffman was sexy in the '70s.

Another little ugly who took over Hollywood.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 26, 2022 2:30 PM |
Hoffman was a lead actor, R15, and sometimes a romantic lead.
[quote]He was nerdy and annoying in "Diary of a Mad Houswife."
R1, that was the ROLE. He was supposed to be nerdy and annoying.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 26, 2022 2:37 PM |
He always looked a decade older than he actually was.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 26, 2022 2:56 PM |
See? On R18's lobby card they photographed him in a towel w/Karen Black. He was being pushed as a sex symbol!
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 27, 2022 1:17 PM |
That's an 8x10 still, R19, not a "lobby card."
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 27, 2022 3:46 PM |
Neither him or Paula were sex symbols, both very cute and attractive though. Lovely couple.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 27, 2022 3:52 PM |
I found him a bit sexy just because I go for that type: witty Jewish intellectual. But I'd be shocked if anybody else considered him sexy.

[quote]Neither him or Paula were sex symbols
Wrong, r21. Paula was very much a sex symbol. And, oh dear to you.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 27, 2022 4:09 PM |
Being nude in a movie does not make one a sex symbol. If so, Glenda Jackson would be second to only Marilyn Monroe. Paula was always perceived as quirky and cute.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 27, 2022 4:24 PM |
You sure as hell didn't know any heterosexual men at the time, r24.

Jeff Goldblum won the skinny, sexy, geeky award
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 27, 2022 5:20 PM |
I thought he was the poor man's Jack Lemmon as an actor, but he did direct "My Favorite Year"...
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 27, 2022 5:24 PM |
Goldblum is 14 years younger than Benjamin. Different eras.
R27, by the mid-1970s Jack Lemmon was the poor man's Jack Lemmon.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 27, 2022 5:42 PM |
Ok, Jeff Goldblum took the skinny, sexy, geeky baton and ran to the finish line with it

Their son Ross isn't hideous; he has dad's eyes and thankfully mom's everything else.

^ JESUS, R30, the kid is the image of his fugly father
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 28, 2022 1:30 AM |
Ohhh. He's pretty!
by Anonymous | reply 32 | February 28, 2022 1:32 AM |
That's a lobby card, r20
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 1, 2022 1:50 PM |
R33, black and white 8x10 photos were printed for use in magazines and newspapers, they're called stills. Lobby cards are just that - lower resolution color photos, 8x10 and 11x14, that were used in movie theater lobbies and outside the theater. Color photos used for lobby cards are a set of eight, same set for both sizes.
This is an 11x14 official lobby card from your favorite film:
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 1, 2022 2:18 PM |
Not r19, but I call that a lobby card, too.
Richard Benjamin had a perfectly acceptable, normal, thin, body. He would NEVER show those pecs on screen if here were that age in 2022.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 1, 2022 3:09 PM |
Calling a car an elephant doesn't make it so, R37.
