Manliest of the "Manly Men.

There were many "Manly Men," many years ago.

From, Clint Walker to, Jeff Chandler to, John Wayne, to Robert Conrad, who infamously told TV Guide, "Whatever macho is, I'm it."

Who was the manliest of the "many manly men"?

by Anonymousreply 50May 26, 2024 9:24 PM

Fred Flintstone

[quote] Robert Conrad, who infamously told TV Guide, "Whatever macho is, I'm it."

And as we all know, he was actually a big closeted bottom who liked getting beat up by rough trade.

The true manliest men do not have to perform their manliness for an audience like Conrad did.

The only ones we have currently are getting old, Clint Eastwood and Sam Elliot can't make films forever. Kevin Costner seems to be staking claim to the role, but he is 67. Where are the young manly men, the new Rowdy Yates?

by Anonymousreply 15February 19, 2022 5:28 AM

Jeff Chandler - is that Kenickie in Grease?

by Anonymousreply 16February 19, 2022 5:39 AM

Kevin Costner (born in COMPTON - he needs a Training Day role) has the outdoorsy/western/rancher thing going on but that was through the veil of a very 1980s Sensitive New Age Guy - his high pitched voice added to that.

John Wayne was manly on camera. Off the set he was a big ol' girl's blouse in Espadrilles and hot pants.

R23 - Maybe I should have posted this to the “background actor” thread, but I *guess* it could count as manly? 😬

In Vancouver in the early ‘90s, anyone who was even tangentially connected to the nascent movie scene there knew the story of Stallone filming “Cliffhanger”, which is to say:

Stallone was on a break but didn’t know he was still miked (mic’d??) - anyway, he was heard by the crew telling some poor woman, as she was blowing him, “SAY MY NAME. CRADLE MY BALLS.”

My sister was a makeup artist and knew someone on set, which is how I heard of this right after it happened. Over the years, I heard the story from others who’d heard it from their friends in the film industry, which amused me no end; I *loved* that we were all somehow connected to Stallone’s ridiculously ego-driven blowjob.

I swear, if you say “Say my name. Cradle my balls.” to anyone of a certain age in Vancouver film industry, they’ll know exactly what you mean.

by Anonymousreply 34February 19, 2022 12:34 PM

^ repost it in the background artists thread r34!

by Anonymousreply 35February 19, 2022 7:57 PM

R34- Better that she was only required to cradle his nasty balls instead of being forced to LICK them.

A lot of these guys like Heston, and Lancaster, were manly, but also actor-y. Lawrence Tierney was sort of manly but also crazy. I can't think of anybody. I'd say Joel McCrea but he was kind of boyish. Maybe Lloyd Nolan.

by Anonymousreply 43February 20, 2022 2:28 AM

Anyone who wanted to be in showbiz is not manly

Daniel Craig is the only one I can think of today.

I know Alan Ladd and Robert Taylor were supposed to be manly men, but I never saw it.

I agree with you! Caitlyn is that rare person who can switch genders from M to F and end up looking MORE masculine.

All things considered, voice, looks, demeanor, Sam Elliott wins…
