what kind of stans are you talking about ? The ones who always comment with hearts and flowers on IG (paid, or else, whatever), or the ones who want to make the truth come to light ? He was no Buddha, he was an indoctrinated kid and then, an adult who wanted his way out. This is a pretty sad story.

Samantha Mathis scored him some bad shit that night, and she's not telling.
She's like a D-list Courtney Love, who was herself a B-list Yoko Ono.

R6 Mathis was with him the night he died, and notably refused to tell police and paramedics what he might've been on, or where he might've gotten the drugs. She's lucky she didn't end up in jail.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 14, 2022 8:15 PM |
Some people should have ended up in jail, that's for sure, but Mathis wan't one of them.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 14, 2022 8:20 PM |
R15 Her career never really went anywhere, so that's perhaps punishment enough.
Her mother was a dear, though.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 14, 2022 8:22 PM |
He wasn't an angel. He was a fucked up kid who grew up in a cult and likely molested and he wasn't educated or streetwise and made stupid mistakes that ended up killing him. His parents were evil and should be in prison. Poor Joaquin still doesn't cut off that grifting. They are like the white Jacksons right down to the babydoll voices.
I'm sure once Heart the mom dies. We'll get the truth about them. She's the svengali and pushes this holy martyr image of River for her charity foundation.

R20 I said HER mother - I was talking about Samantha Mathis (River's girlfriend at the time he died). Samantha's mother, actress Bibi Besch, was well-regarded in the industry.
Jesus, when the doctor said you needed glasses, he wasn't referring to the wine goblets you clearly can't put down.

by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 14, 2022 8:42 PM |
No need to be condescending. I don't think Mathis's mother is important here. As for Stripes, he might know a lot. About RP's life and problems. Related to the cult. And the difficulty to go away. I read here and elsewhere that his friends are guilty, they're not.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 14, 2022 8:46 PM |
Yes. Most child stars like River Phoenix, Corey Haim, Jonathan Brandis, Brad Renfro, Gary Coleman, Dana Plato, Lindsay Lohan etc were mostly fucked up from their family's dysfunction prior to fame. The ones with good parents and stable homes grow up normal like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Henry Thomas, Scarlett Johansson, Zendaya, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 14, 2022 9:06 PM |
R12 He was a natural and had potential to grow into a fine character actor. He was far more interesting to watch than Cruise, Depp, Damon, Pitt, Smith and Willis
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 14, 2022 9:08 PM |
That is not about "good parents", that's about a cult his parents were involved in, and were still involved in 1993 when he died. No need to compare RP to other actors. That's not the point.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 14, 2022 9:24 PM |
OP, what in hell are you talking about?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 14, 2022 9:26 PM |
R26 Well good parents would not be in a cult that justifies child rape and prostitution of it's female members. They are too blame.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 14, 2022 9:26 PM |
River Phoenix was as interesting a lump of cheese in comparison to 'Jason Phoenix'.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 14, 2022 9:30 PM |

River was a magnificent guy especially considering his childhood and his manipulative, wicked mother. River was thoughtful, compassionate, gay friendly and super kind .
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 14, 2022 9:47 PM |
That is the problem with the River Phoenix's topic. Keeping it either consensual (he was a celebrity, they all do drugs)(f***OFF) or "related to his beauty and supposed addictions". YES, 34, he had a wicked and manipulative mother, to say the less, and he did his best to thrive. He tried to quit the cult in 1988/89, but without efficient support and counseling, he couldn't.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 14, 2022 9:50 PM |
Joaquin is in full throes of control by mom and sisters . He’s a prisoner. Plus, he knows what really happened to River at Viper Room and mommy went along with coverup. She’s truly evil.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 14, 2022 9:53 PM |
River was used all his life. At some point, he tried to escape that. Yes, his death was covered up. He was used all along and when he was a problem, he died. He did not die from a drug addiction. No. He died because he was a problem for a lot of people.

He said that River cared about Fruciante and took him to detox, because he was so far in the trenches of addiction , and wanted to help save his life. His dad said “ John’s alive and River’s dead , where’s the fairness in that?”

by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 14, 2022 10:15 PM |
42, no fairness. At all. But please don't believe John Bottom's words.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 14, 2022 10:20 PM |
The Children of God made all of its adult female members prostitute themselves to recruit male members. And since River was the oldest child. It's very possible he had a different father. River and Joaquin do have similar facial expressions but they don't look that much alike and the features they do share comes from their mother. Joaquin and the sisters mostly looks like their father. John likely just raised River as his own child.
All these weird Evangelical cults arising out of the 60s counterculture truly showed the dark side of the Sexual Revolution and predators who took advantage.

River was pimped out by his parents at a young age to both the cult and to Hollywood. He grew up playing guitar and singing on the street with his siblings for money in Latin America. His family was so poor, they had to go vegetarian. Once they got to Hollywood, had the burden of supporting his family as a child star. He was never comfortable with acting and modeling but did it to please his mother. And most of his views on the world and vegetarianism came from his indoctrination, parroting back the ideology of his parents. It seems he was rebelling in his early 20s by taking roles like My Own Private Idaho and then going to hang out with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and getting into hard drugs.
I think of him as no different from any sheltered religious kid who finally gets some financial independence and acts out. And his acting out backfired being a young guy who felt invincible.
In this interview here, he's high but sounds like clearly a very angry and depressed individual who is disillusioned with everything. I'm sure he was growing to resent his family and knew he was just a money machine for both them and Hollywood

He seemed very gay and was reported by some people as bicurious. One gay writer claimed River asked him a lot about what it was like being gay and questions having gay sex. Samantha Mathis said River was very curious and seemed open to it. River also changed the character of Mike for My Own Private Idaho from being asexual and only doing sex for money to being gay and in love with his friend Scott. And River went out of his way to talk to male hustlers and go on the streets for research. His close friendship with Michael Stipe has been interpreted as being more than just friends too especially since Stipe wrote lyrics about him.

Sue Sulgot (an ex-gf) described River as bisexual. Mike Parker (the inspiration for Mike in MOPI) described River as bicurious. Gay writer James A. Baggett claimed River asked him tons of questions about homosexuality while at a restaurant with his then-girlfriend Martha Plimpton. This was years before MOPI was filmed. We'll never know for sure though but he seemed more interested in the topic than the regular young straight guy who often would not entertain that (especially in the 80s and 90s during HIV crisis).

by Anonymous | reply 62 | February 15, 2022 10:20 PM |
If River was telling the truth about being molested in the Children of God (mostly likely true since that cult actually does prostitute its child members to the older ones). It would explain why he was so sexually confused. Apparently at age 14, his parents built him a tent to lose his virginity a second time to an older woman. Really, I believe the Phoenix parents refused to file an investigation for River's death because they feared that investigation would reveal how abusive they were as parents and expose all the years of child endangerment. Truly despicable people and Rain and Joaquin are still so brainwashed.

Ok i do not how how to quote ppl, forgive me for posting a reply to all. I'm the one who said River had biological parents (both of them) different from the one we know. Again, I do not like sensationalism, and I do not care about ppl being bisexual or else, this is so not the point (be whoever you wanna be, and be happy). The point is that the narrative we've been fed with is not the truth. When you go through the history of the sect, things don't add up.At all. And I despise lies. And misplaced loyalty. If River told the truth about being molested in the COG ? Well, he's not the only survivor to tell that. Who lies about being molested ? Not just one testimony, but, many of them, at the age of 4. In the early 90's, that was a bad time for the COG, there was a lot coming out, a lot of press, trials, and the infamous "end of the world" according to that false prophet. the cult was very much at risk, and River, who was not a random child in that cult (at all), talked. He couldn't be the voice of the survivors. If someone somewhere wants to say I'm mad, go on. Be my guest. I'm waiting. The thing is that the narrative is changing when you read articles about River's family, one article is saying one thing, one article another, more convenient, but it does not fit with the history of the cult when you go through it properly.. And going through this history, the chronology, it all points out that River has different parents, not just the father, but both (and that was such a hard PR work at some point to show that genetics is there with at least his mother)(the COG know PR, it's their thing, since the very beginning). Something is bothering me (to say the less), is that his family said he was "joking" when confessing about the sexual abuse. Who says that ? No-one. actually : no, one. Who actually chooses to be loyal to 'something' instead of being loyal to a family member ? River was one of the very first child born inside the cult, from then leaders. One of you posted one of his very last interviews, he was clearly wasted, he couldn't keep up, and that is understandable and so sad. What would have we done in his position ? No better I'm afraid. It is well documented that ex members of sects have PTSD and depression, substance abuse issues, insomnia. And, it is very well documented that this sect did very bad things. One of you mentioned the MO Letters, yes, one was about River, a very chocking one. And a "post-mortem interview" (WTF !?) So to all of you out there who think we just are "kiddies" and "fans", I'm not, people who can ARE NOT. And clearly, some people are getting away with a lot .... so much. To all the people who care : regards. To the other one : mute that topic and go chat elsewhere.

I think that's a world of difference between fangirls who idealize, infantilize and make River out to be this sweet, innocent soul. And those who see him as an exploited child star who grew up to be self-destructive and had a death that was not properly investigated with hidden truths and dishonest family members who are still tied to scams and grifts.
I think OP is calling out the former.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | February 16, 2022 10:37 PM |
what's OP ? (English is not my native language). I'm certainly not a fangirl. when I encounter River's pictures on the internet I don't see a poster boy, neither a sweet innocent soul, I see a coerced kid and then, a young man who tried to open his eyes and get out (but couldn't and fell). His death was not properly investigated. "Dishonest family members" ? yeah. indeed. But gotta stay loyal to a sect, that is so much more important ugh ? (irony).
by Anonymous | reply 67 | February 16, 2022 11:13 PM |
John Bottom can't be trusted. he just can't. That man is no one to be trusted. RIP but con people are con people. Even dead ones. Sorry for him but accountability is something important, and there's none, here. Besides, arguing that Frusciante is responsible for River's death is utter but*sh+t, massive. And, so easy. So convenient. So, so many lies. For the sake of what ? Ego. Money. But not for the sake of, neither a son, nor a brother.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | February 16, 2022 11:29 PM |
OP = original poster.
The Children of God had a controversy in the 2000s when a former adult male member went in to get revenge on a nanny who sexually abused him. He recorded a video talking about the abuse he endured and killed himself after. The Children of God/The Family heavily denied the allegations and told it's members to ignore it.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | February 16, 2022 11:36 PM |
Thanks for the OP explanation ! Yeah I went through the COG history, I know about Ricky's sad story (and some others. There was a crime ruled as a suicide, the police was forced to rule it as a suicide, while the victim - a young man born in the cult - was stabbed multiple times). Unfortunately, we can't size and understand River Phoenix's life (and death) without taking the sect into consideration. This is why it is important. Not because he was beautiful. Not because he was a famous actor. Cheers.

River Phoenix. He was Aaliyah before Aaliyah was Aaliyah.
And Heath Ledger. And Philip Seymour Hoffman. And the rest of the lot who become more famous for being dead than they were alive.

No he wasn't Aaliyah (who was forced into marrying a certain someone at 15), he was not anyone but himself. And he was not more famous being dead than being alive, because if he was, there would be less haters out there, dismissing comments like mine and so many others.
