Oddly, I’m not that interested
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 8, 2022 5:24 AM |
Me neither. I haven't seen a movie in 3 years so fuck it, fuck it right in the ear, I say.

The final ratings for this shit show is going to real entertainment. I can’t be arsed to throw or attend a party this year. I hope they just hand the statue to Gag now so she’ll stop campaigning for at least 24 months.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 8, 2022 5:34 AM |
Is there a difference between TV and Movies at this point as all the movies are now simultaneously shown on cable
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 8, 2022 5:38 AM |
What station?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 8, 2022 5:51 AM |
If it was held in a train station last year, will it be at an aircraft hanger or perhaps the Port of Los Angeles this year? Or maybe just a used car lot in Torrance?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will unveil nominees in 23 categories in a livestream that will be available on Oscar.com, Oscars.org, the Academy’s Twitter, YouTube and Facebook platforms, along with being broadcast live on ABC’s Good Morning America and ABC News Live.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 8, 2022 6:02 AM |
Every category must have at least one: disabled, black, LGBTQ, LatinX, Asian and female.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 8, 2022 6:33 AM |
I’m waiting by my computer, ready to complain. Even if us black people overperform tomorrow morning with the nominations. And no, I don’t give a shit about other minorities.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 8, 2022 6:36 AM |
Compared to last year, this field's is downright 1939 level good. That's how shitty 2020 was. Because this year really wasn't all that either.
My favorite film this year was Power of the Dog. Pretty sure it will get a ton of noms. I want Kiki Dunst to get a nom for sure.
(I do want to see Gaga get a nom just to piss of DL Madonna fans.)
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 8, 2022 6:41 AM |
An Academy Award for The House of Gucci? HA!
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 8, 2022 6:50 AM |
Adam driver should get a nom, he’s been consistently good and was in both Annette and house of Gucci which I think were among the best films this year (in a typically weak year).
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 8, 2022 6:58 AM |
Best Supporting Actress nominations:
Glenn Close for Swan Song
Meryl Streep for Don't Look Up
They can sit next to each other at the ceremony.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 8, 2022 7:00 AM |
I don't remember Glenn in "Swan Song". Perhaps her acting was so good I didn't recognize her?

Jen Hudson wins her second Oscar! It's gonna be SO sweet. Gaga will never swan away with that prize.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 8, 2022 7:55 AM |
Their ratings have been in the tank for years. They haven't learned that the viewers want a break from politics. We don't want to hear the annoying shpeel from some of these jokers. Stay with good old glamour and movie talk.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 8, 2022 8:02 AM |
Remember when the movies that were nominated/or won was also popular in the box office?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 8, 2022 8:09 AM |
I hope GaGa is snubbed. Jaime Dornan is going to get nominated. Dornan is ex "roommates" with closeted Andrew Garfield. DL knows what that means.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 8, 2022 8:11 AM |
Around 2011-13 the best movie winners started to be forgettable, niche and pretentious and only for the entertainment industry types than the masses and it’s been like that ever since.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 8, 2022 8:23 AM |
BELFAST should do well, even though it's not about the Black Irish.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 8, 2022 8:55 AM |
All the nominees are Netflix and shit. They should go up for Emmys.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 8, 2022 8:59 AM |
If Gags get a nom and Chastain doesn't, I'm done with the Oscars. There were a few moments I thought Chastain *was* Tammy Faye. I had no emotional reaction whatsoever to the Gucci Lifetime movie.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 8, 2022 9:24 AM |
Jessica Chastain is not getting nominated. Neither is Adam Driver.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 8, 2022 9:50 AM |
I would love to see Simon Rex nominated in Best Actor and Ruth Negga and Marlee Maitlin nominated in Best Supporting Actress.

by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 8, 2022 10:22 AM |
Pulling for Simon Rex, Penelope Cruz, and Alana Haim. I also have a soft spot for Jessica Chastain. Hoping for her as well.
Kiki BETTER get in.
That is all.

The Academy members adore Nicole Kidman, she will be nominated.

Hold me Keith. I'm scared.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 8, 2022 11:06 AM |
Which stars do you think are up at the ungodly hour anxiously waiting.
I'd say Kidman, Chastain, Branagh, Jada & Will.
McDormand would be in bed sleeping like a baby not giving a fuck.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 8, 2022 11:07 AM |
I'm hoping for Chastain, Garfield and Udo to pull off a surprise nomination.

R39, Udo Kier? That would be a lovely surprise, practically a miracle. I loved his film Swan Song (dir: Todd Stephens). Highly recommend it.

by Anonymous | reply 54 | February 8, 2022 12:43 PM |
I don't think there is that much talk on politics really. I hope Cruz, Chastain are nominated. Gaga, Colman, and Kidman will be I would say. I think Haim was good but wouldn't mind if she misses out. I liked Cooper Hoffman better. Jamie Dornan is gay? Gosh you DL insiders are always on the money!
by Anonymous | reply 55 | February 8, 2022 12:44 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 8, 2022 12:58 PM |
Why is Gaga getting such a huge push? That film/performance was essentially 1/2 step up from Showgirls level entertainment.
The screwing on the work table was laughable.
Do people not see through her schtick? It couldn't be any more transparent.

The House of Gucci as best movie of the year? Did you get to see a director's cut where the rest of the camp classic was put back in? Because the version I saw had about 15 minutes of fun, the rest was ploddy and boring, and had Jared Leto's 1980s spaghetti sauce commercial accent. Did Leto do a voiceover narration track for the version you saw?

Nightmare Alley remake is just as boring as the original, and at least that one didn't have Rooney Mara.

Yes. Song nominees:
"Be Alive" from "King Richard"
"Dos Oruguitas" from "Encanto"
"Down to Joy" from "Belfast"
"No Time to Die" from "No Time to Die"
"Somehow You Do" from "Four Good Days"

by Anonymous | reply 200 | February 8, 2022 1:49 PM |
Dang I thought they would nominate that Ariana Grande song just so she can perform. But they already have Beyonce so they probably thought that's even better or enough. It's a good and funny pop song.

Did House of Gucci get anything? I’m glad it didn’t receive any acting noms b/c it was pretty bad throughout. They’re all capable actors obviously just poorly directed with a bad screenplay.
by Anonymous | reply 204 | February 8, 2022 1:50 PM |
You know even if Will wins, Jada will find something to complain about.
For some reason until looking it up just now, I thought King Richard was a Shakespeare adaptation like The Tragedy of Macbeth, lol. I'm more interested in it now though.
by Anonymous | reply 205 | February 8, 2022 1:51 PM |
So glad they didn't reward the mess that was House of Gucci (although I wouldn't have been mad if they gave Driver a nom since he was the only one who was consistently good throughout the stitched-together movie). Too bad they rewarded basic Stewart's PR team for their nonsense. Haven't seen Being the Ricardos, but from the clips I'm sideeying Kidman's nom but OK with Bardem. Glad for Chastain--she did a great job what could have been a cartoon. And yes, the makeup nom for that film was legit--Tammy Faye's makeup evolution was a subtle but very important part of the "story."

Power of the Dog gets 12 Nominations, will easily take Best Picture (first Best Picture for Netflix), Best Director (first sequential female Best Director winners in history), probably Kirsten Dunst in Supporting, probably Best Cinematography (first female cinematographer to win if happens)
Lowest rated Oscars in history guaranteed.
by Anonymous | reply 209 | February 8, 2022 1:53 PM |
I am rooting for Dunst/Plemmons, R174, as winning married couple.
by Anonymous | reply 210 | February 8, 2022 1:54 PM |
I think Cumberbatch -- who I don't like -- deserves Best Actor, R209, though I think it will go to either Will Smith or Denzel.

by Anonymous | reply 213 | February 8, 2022 1:55 PM |
I really didn’t think Plemmons had much to do in that film. I get he’s well liked but surely he will have other opportunities for a nom. Makes me think a lot of voters didn’t watch the films, as usual.

I’m happy for Dame Judi (the best part of Belfast and puzzlingly under-mentioned), Ciaran Hinds, Jesse Plemons (the best part of otherwise dull Dog), and Drive My Car. I hope Drive or Belfast takes it all.
I didn’t like any of the films that landed the Best Actresses in that category. All tripe. Too bad.

by Anonymous | reply 230 | February 8, 2022 2:00 PM |
The Nightmare Alley Best Picture nom is a head scratcher. Obviously block voting from the studio that produced it got it nominated but I don’t think it’ll increase interest in the film much, which gets off to a really shaky start and barely improves from there.

I haven’t thought twice about King Richard since seeing it last November. It’s fine, like a family film, I guess. But I’ll never watch it again.
by Anonymous | reply 238 | February 8, 2022 2:03 PM |
I loved Belfast but I didn’t think Catriona was particularly good, especially compared to Judi? I mean, I was fine with the overdramatic zigs and zags of her over dramatic performance because the film wasn’t supposed to be naturalistic, but she was the weakest of the adult actors by far.
by Anonymous | reply 239 | February 8, 2022 2:03 PM |

Dench’s was the best acting in Belfast, and it was the heart of the film—the love the family had to leave behind to survive.

LOL GUCCI shut out completely. Absolutely love it. The Academy got it right.
by Anonymous | reply 245 | February 8, 2022 2:06 PM |
And Scott Feinberg at THR stood by his prediction for Jude Hill (the boy in Belfast) until the very end, even incl. him in his final predictions a few days ago without a single pre-cursor nomination or win. Not suggesting anything untoward at all - but from an awards prediction standpoint, what was that about?
by Anonymous | reply 246 | February 8, 2022 2:07 PM |
Dench was too old for the role. She looked and acted like a great grandmother. I didn’t believe she was married to Hinds (who was magnificent) for a second.

Pretty sure Nightmare Alley and Don't Look Up are both "only because there are 10 spaces" nominees. They probably would have squeezed WSS in even with only 5.
by Anonymous | reply 249 | February 8, 2022 2:09 PM |
Both the grandparents in Belfast looked pretty old for their son to be Jamie Dornan, but Belfast during those years wasn’t the lap of luxury, and maybe he was a surprise late in life baby.

Ciaran Hinds on the 19 year age gap between him and Dench
[quote]As “Pop” – the grandfather of nine-year-old Buddy – Hinds is a back-yard philosopher who dispenses advice – and maths homework – from a throne on the outside toilet, while the formidable Granny (Judi Dench) sits at the window, listening in, with a put-down always to hand. There is a 19-year age gap between Hinds and Dench. “I said: ‘I’ll age up and you age down and we’ll meet in the middle,” he says.

Isn't Belfast set in the late 60s (haven't seen it yet)? People generally used to look much older than we are used to now, plus the stress of living through the Troubles would rapidly age anyone. I think it's realistic to have the grandparents looking that old.
by Anonymous | reply 258 | February 8, 2022 2:13 PM |

I'm very shocked and disappointed to see Lady Gaga get snubbed. She really deserved this one and I thought she had it. I think this rejection will inspire her to give us something really special for her next film, though. Her time will come someday, just not this year. I hope Jessica Chastain or Kristen Stewart takes it instead. How boring it would be if Olivia Colman won. I also hope Kodi Smit-McPhee takes home Best Supporting Actor.
I also saw an article saying Candyman was on the shortlist for Best Original Score. I knew it was unlikely but I still hoped. It didn't happen, though.

Gaga was definitely a snub. A BIG snub. It's either a "who did she piss off" snub or a "we know what she did to get those other noms and we're not having that" snub.

Parallel Mothers was clumsy and disappointing, it didn't compare to Talk to Her or All about my Mother. Pedro should stick to melodrama and not try to incorporate political allegory. Penelope's apartment was gorgeous, though, and she looked beautiful

R314 There’s no need for best song to be written by the performer, that would be a horrible restriction to place on it, they don’t do that for Grammy’s song of the year.

I’ve said from day one that Chastain would win this in the end. I thought that the moment I walked out of the theater. She was incredible in that movie.
by Anonymous | reply 325 | February 8, 2022 3:05 PM |
It is kind of funny to see Gaga get the freeze when she's been so over the top in campaigning, but I do feel bad because she was good in parts of the movie. She was really hurt by the fact that House of Gucci is a mess--if it were a more cohesive film and with better editing, I could imagine her performance being great.
Stewart getting the nom is practically offensive. They're rewarding 10 years of her PR team pushing nonsense articles about her being a great actress despite having the most limited range and her being an in demand movie star despite every single movie of hers since Twilight flopping. And then she pulls her "I'm so RILL and EDGY and I don't give a fuck" while running the most obvious desperate campaign second only to Gaga. She is the definition of a basic white lady.
Kidman getting a nom is also cringeworthy, but at least she has a long career of strong performances. Her rep as a good actress was earned, so the Academy being lazy and giving her a nod for a movie most of them probably didn't bother watching is annoying but at least kind of makes sense.

I thought Chastain's performance was good. Her Tammy Faye was a fleshed out person, not the cartoon most people imagined her to be.
I can see why she and the movie might be polarizing, though, so that's not a good sign for her chances of winning. If not her than I hope it's Cruz (she's overdue) or Coleman. Kidman would be a joke, Stewart would be a travesty.

R342 there's no point in arguing opinions as if they were facts, so I'll just say I disagree. I've seen many of Stewart's movies because I tend to gravitate towards the indie fare she favors and/or is stuck with since she can't pull an audience into theaters. I've never seen a single performance of hers where I thought "oh wow, she's good." I find her mostly bland and forgettable, even in the films where she's gotten obviously orchestrated over the top praise. She even made Joan Jett boring, which is a cardinal sin. And in Spencer she did the polar opposite of what Chastain did in Tammy Faye--Chastain made a caricature into a real person and Stewart made a real person into a character.

R341, I remember there being an "overdue" narrative about Denzel Washington even though he had won a supporting Oscar earlier in his career.
[quote]Of course, the role went to Denzel Washington, whose fire-breathing performance as Harris earned him what many believed was an overdue first Academy Award for Best Actor. (Washington had previously won Best Supporting Actor for Glory in 1990.)

Best Lead Actor
Javier Bardem (“Being the Ricardos”) [LATIN X]
Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”)
Andrew Garfield (“Tick, Tick … Boom!”) [GAY]
Will Smith (“King Richard”) [BLACK]
Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”) [MENTALLY DISABLED]

It’s not a snub. At all. No one who matters in the industry cares about Googoo and her complete lack of acting talent R279. Certainly not the Academy, and they’re still the gatekeeper. You don’t like it, take it up with them. The industry is not going to collapse because a singer who started acting five minutes ago didn’t get nominated for an Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 361 | February 8, 2022 4:01 PM |
R359, I was not saying or even suggesting that Denzel didn't deserve lead for Training Day. He's one of the few actors who could legit win for almost any performance. But he'd been nominated at least a couple of times for lead before Training Day and there was definitely a narrative of "it's time" for him that year.

I am just so glad that Jessica Chastain was nominated for her performance as Tammy Faye. I can't quit raving about that performance, it really was one of the best biopic performances I've seen since Sissy Spacek as Loretta.
Also, the Oscars might be able to draw in viewers this year just with their musical performances, if the original song contenders are sung by the original artists. You would have Beyonce, Van Morrison, Billie Ellish, and Reba, all performing, that should lift ratings with a variety of people.

Kristen Stewart is a terrific actress but she also has something beyond talent which is that the camera LOVES her. She has a unique presence on camera. I mean, watch Personal Shopper - the effortless cool and obvious intelligence and capability. Or Certain Women or Clouds of Sils Maria.
A lot of you don’t seem to understand that acting on camera is unique to way the actor engages with the lens. She’s a terrific actress, yes, and also in many circles a cultural icon. Give her that.
Spencer is a polarising film but incredibly ballsy. And she carries it from start to finish. I’m ready for wherever she does next.

I don’t doubt the factual event of the interview depicted but it’s impact seems to be grossly overstated.
Ultimately, I didn’t care about TFB at the time and I don’t care about her now. It just seems like such Oscar bait. And it worked

It would be nice if the Oscars had an "ensemble" award, like one of the others does. Everyone was equally important in Belfast. I wish Jamie Dornan had been nominated, but it would only have been for Best Supporting, against Ciaran Hinds, and that would've sucked. But he wasn't the lead actor, and his character was no more prominent than anyone else's. If anyone was the star, it was the boy.
I hope Jamie gets another chance ASAP.
by Anonymous | reply 384 | February 8, 2022 4:26 PM |
For the youngins who aren't familiar with Tammy Faye, watch just a few minutes of the real life woman and you'll see the challenge Chastain had with the role. Tammy came across like a poorly acted super earnest cartoon character, but it turns out she really was that person IRL. Now imagine you have to portray the "real" Tammy in a movie and it's NOT going to be portraying her as gritty or bitchy or otherwise vastly different than her public persona. Instead you have to convince people that ridiculous persona was the real deal. THAT'S a challenge and that's what I meant upthread about Chastain making a caricature into a real person.

The only other time Denzel and Will competed for the same Oscar was in 2002, when Will was nominated for Ali and Denzel won for Training Day. During that ceremony Will and Jada left early, before Best Actor was awarded. There was typical Hollywood speculation/gossip that he left early because knew he wasn't going to win, but they actually left because young Willow had to be taken to the hospital with a fever and ear infection.
This is Will Smith's third Best Actor nomination. For both of his previous nods he lost to another African American actor: in 2002 to Denzel Washington, and in 2007 to Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland.

Yes Stewart played Diana as a "character" in Spencer because that was what the movie demanded -- it wasn't really a tedious biopic like Chastain's, with her ridiculous facial prosthetics that I couldn't look at for more than five seconds without gagging (Garfield's were worse but only because she had all that on-the-nose make-up to cover them up) -- Spencer is an abstract art-film about class and suffocating history and Diana is an idea in it, not a mimicry gig
by Anonymous | reply 424 | February 8, 2022 5:03 PM |
R401 that plus the oversaturation of awards, both "prestige" and silly. The Oscars used to be the only one that mattered. Now, by the time the Oscars come along you've seen most of the winner win at least one other big award.
R397, the Oscars need to better balance rewarding the great performances while still giving nods to audience favorites. Neither a category filled with noms for movies no one has seen nor one that is filled with crap that managed to attract an audience do much for the industry as a whole. They should aim to include the "best" but there's always room to reward an audience favorite who turned in a strong performance, or a big box office hit that was also well made. But the Academy has its biases and they always show.

[quote]I point you to Renee Zellweger in the Judy biopic for someone who won in a not very good movie with just one performance.
Also, Julianne Moore for Still Alice is another example. I'm sure there are tons of others.

R422, I didn't state he was a lead in TEOTF, I said he was better as Jim Bakker. I agree that is a supporting role and he is the lead role in the horrible ttB.

by Anonymous | reply 428 | February 8, 2022 5:07 PM |
R424 the abstract-art quality of Spencer is the only interesting thing about the movie. Without that, it's just Stewart giving Diana all the same twitchy-itchy tics she uses in every other role but with an English accent.

I fell in love with Andrew Garfield in Tick, Tick, BOOM! I've always liked him as an actor, but that performance wowed me permanently. I agree it wasn't a great movie, or a great story, but Andrew was genuinely exciting. I loved getting to hear him sing. I'm going to watch it again soon.

Why in the world did Disney fail to put we don’t talk about Bruno up for an award?
by Anonymous | reply 431 | February 8, 2022 5:13 PM |
Nicole Kidman deserves 2 Oscars after 30 years of exceptional performances. It's just a shame if she gets it for the Lucy movie.
by Anonymous | reply 432 | February 8, 2022 5:14 PM |
Renee was in a biopic about one of the industry's most beloved stars. Julianne Moore was going on a long overdue narrative. Chastain has neither, no one checks for her. At best she's a niche actress with a small yet noisy (and delusional) fanbase. She won't win but it'll be amusing to watch her stans insist that she will.
by Anonymous | reply 433 | February 8, 2022 5:14 PM |
R431 they chose the song to submit before Bruno got really popular. Plus that big ensemble might be harder to pull off on the night.

R427 I disagree because as perfectly as Jessica Chastain captured Tammy Faye, AG did the opposite with Jim Bakker. After watching YouTube videos of the real Jim Bakker from back then AG didn’t seem to capture him at all. JC captured Tammy, and I thought Vincent D'Onofrio captured Jerry Falwell but AG and the Pat Robertson actor missed the mark. I haven’t seen ttb but if it is worse I can’t see why he would receive a nomination.

Yes.
R338 through R343 - and R377 - are definitely Stewart PR plants.
Spencer was atrocious. And Stewart’s acting in it was one of the worst performances ever: full of bizarre tics, whispers and all of Stewart’s bizarre idiosyncrasies we’ve all had to endure.
The majority of viewers are perceptive and can call a spade a spade.
The fact that she’s even nominated speaks volumes. The Oscars are done.

Nuh-uh. That was the pinnacle of ridiculousness. Of course, I may have been having sense memory flashbacks to L&O: CI.

On the subject of great captures, one of my all-time favorites is Richard Paul's too-brief role as Falwell in The People vs. Larry Flynt. That was actually the second time he played him (the first was in a TV movie about Jim and Tammy Faye). I still remember the look on his face when Isaacman is telling the Supreme Court that there's value in public speech that takes down a bloated gasbag like Falwell who preaches hypocrisy with a "beatific smile" on his face.
D'Onofrio's Falwell was not as good.

R428 Knocking "Rich Little" nominations is the elitist default position. These films are often the only cultural common frame of reference contemporary audiences have when confronted with art house dreck which they or no one they know has ever see. The idea of Kidman cruising to a second Best Actress Oscar for her miscast Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos is a bummer. I don't dislike her, and think she can be quite good under very specific conditions, but feel she is already over-rewarded when you consider the many superlative screen actresses who have yet to win a single Oscar.
Cruz is strong in Parallel Mothers, and I am happy to see her included here, but the messy screenplay undermines the effectiveness of the performance in the last act. My pick from this field would be Jessica Chastain.
Rebecca Hall often gets a bum deal come awards time. Her performance in Christine was my favorite of that year, but the distributor was too tiny to get her Oscar traction. Now Passing is overlooked entirely, despite Hall's excellent screenplay, direction, and wonderful performances from Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson. Hope she breaks through soon, because she is very talented.

There was the misfortune to be 2 films out this year made by acclaimed actresses, daughters of directors, making their directorial debut with eye catching performances from their actresses.
The Lost Daughter got the Oscar noms, Passing didn't. But Passing got the BAFTA noms, not surprising as Hall is British.

I didn't realize I had seen him in a great film, Anthropoid, about the assassination of SS Gen Reinhard Heydrich, the main architect behind the Final Solution and the Reich's third in command after Hitler and Himmler. Actually, Branaugh played Heydrich in a film about the Wannsee Conference. Anyway, Dornan and Cillian Murphy were really good in Anthropoid.

Good agent, r536?
by Anonymous | reply 540 | February 8, 2022 10:54 PM |
Bradley Cooper seem inexplicably insecure, what’s that about?

[quote] It’s really not, though. Nor is former porn whore Simon Rex. That was never going to happen.
[quote] Yell well, Mark Rylance got his cock sucked onscreen and went on to actually win one.
[quote] And that was a legitimate movie [R275], which does not compare with jerking off multiple times in a porn flick. But you know that.
It was porn, Baby.

couldn't they have found an American for the Western?! Alien head is so unconvincing as an american!
by Anonymous | reply 543 | February 8, 2022 10:54 PM |
Not true R538. She was pushed for nominations for Little Women and The Prom. She also got some oscar buzz this year for Don't Look Up.
by Anonymous | reply 544 | February 8, 2022 10:55 PM |
So they are gonna give it to Will Smith coz it's the era we are living in.
I totally knew that was what they were aiming for when that movie came out.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | February 8, 2022 10:56 PM |
If left with their own devices, the Academy will always nominate shit like Being The Ricardos. They can't help it. It's quite amazing.
by Anonymous | reply 546 | February 8, 2022 10:57 PM |
I hope Simon Rex gets some more good roles. I hope his fictional movie role doesn't become a documentary.

AMPAS loves biopics about Hollywood. It's why Kidman will win Actress, why Renee Z. won two years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 548 | February 8, 2022 10:59 PM |
R545 Smith will get it because he earned it.
by Anonymous | reply 549 | February 8, 2022 11:01 PM |
R544 Meryl had Buzz for those roles before the movies came out. There was no push for her in spite of excellent reviews of her work in the first two.
Kate Hudson even got nominated for the Globe over Meryl in The Prom. I think Meryl knows that she needed a long break from individual awards attention.

GaGa has a song writing Oscar. That’s not the same as winning an acting Oscar. Anyone can win based on producing etc.
Winning for your acting is the big one.
by Anonymous | reply 551 | February 8, 2022 11:02 PM |
Meryl didn’t do anything worthy of a nomination in any of those films.

[quote]Sigourney hasn't been nominated in over thirty years, and hasn't even been in the Oscar conversation for at least twenty. I think she should have an Oscar, but I think she's far more likely to get an Honorary Award at this point than a competitive award.
I agree than an honorary award is more likely than a competitive win at this stage, R533, but I think she can look forward to at least one more nomination. The same with Michelle Pfeiffer.

Didn't Bradley Cooper sign on for two more (Netflix) films with the director of Nightmare Alley? Probably got a producer credit for that commitment.

The only satisfying thing should Will win, and I pray he doesn’t, is he will always be left wondering if it was because he gave a good performance or because of the political climate we are in. That kind of shit could eat away at him for decades to come.

I liked Cumberbatch in Power of the Dog--that he's slightly ill at ease and incongruous as a cowboy is part of what makes the part work. Really glad to see Dunst get the nod. She's done excellent work for years.
I still think Chastain might slip in--Spencer is supposed to be a weird mess. Haven't seen it, but I've seen other supposedly "good" performances by Stewart and they're fine . . . but giving her credit for not being as terrible as she is in Twilight doesn't make her best actress. Similar thing with Gaga. Just because she's not bad for a singer doesn't mean she turned in a great performance. Kidman just doesn't work as Lucy, who had a ton of energy and a rubber face. Cruz is working in Spanish and working in a foreign language is still a bit of an obstacle, though Marion Cotillard overcame it. Colman's already won and the Lost Daughter is a slog to sit through.
I think WIll Smith might get it just so he and Jada will finally shut up, though the British actor contingent might throw their weight behind Cumberbatch.
Drive My Car has got to be the lock for Foreign Language film.
I'm thinking Power of the Dog and Campion for Best Pix//Director. Maybe Kodie-Smith for best supporting (I like Plemons, but that's a nothing part.)

I swear, the majority of you here are old enough to know this so I don’t know what’s going on. Will Smith is a homophobic piece of shit who took a role of a gay man, based on a real life gay man, and refused to play the role as defined. Did that stop his career, no not at all, he was rewarded with further roles. He is not your friend.
by Anonymous | reply 565 | February 8, 2022 11:19 PM |
R412 I never underestimate McDormand at the Oscars. She WAS better in French Dispatch than MacBeth, but the woman has four Oscars. Three acting and one producing. The Academy at this point are probably thinking enough already. We’ve rewarded you and your hubby enough.
R460 not really. Cruz won the LA film critics and National Society of film critics lead actress, so she did have traction. She has that slot for a foreign film performance but it’s unlikely it'll translate to a win.

by Anonymous | reply 568 | February 8, 2022 11:29 PM |
I think Smith (and his wife) are pompous idiots detached from reality, but the #Oscarssowhite campaign has been a pain in the neck for Hollywood, so the Academy may see giving Smith the award as a means to make him go away. My sense is that they actually respect Denzel Washington as an actor, Smith not so much. Smith, however, was a huge star at one point (No. 1 box office), so he thinks he's entitled to the trophy.
Cumberbatch will have the momentum of being in the likely Best Picture, but Hollywood awarded a Brit last year and I think a number of American actors are getting a little fed up with the British take-over of American roles.
by Anonymous | reply 569 | February 8, 2022 11:36 PM |
Meryl refused to have the studio campaign her for "Marvin's Room" allowing Diane Keaton the chance instead.

Would they be proud? Throw a fit? Feel they were being patronized? Know they were being trolled?
What say you?

It's not a snub when someone was never a serious contender. Hudson's performance was DOA rewards-wise. It didn't help that Cynthia Erivo had just done the TV movie on Aretha. 'Respect' was also never advertised very well.

I love how energized and enthusiastic these guys are, even more so if you watch it on 1.5 speed as I do most YouTube videos. I can’t figure out their sexuality though, they seem to have a lot of potential to be gay, but they might just have some weird twin thing going on between them where they will never be a close to someone else as they are to each other.

I loathe how they do Oscar nominations now. That Ross woman is mind numbingly obnoxious and has now done it every year now that I can remember recently which is as thirsty as you can possibly be. Adding the little old effeminate troll today made it a laughing stock. I wish they would go back to the formal announcement with pictures of the nominees and not worry about the childish fake bullshit with these people who have nothing to do with film doing the announcement. It's what's wrong with their whole take on the show. In this day in age only true film fans care about the Oscar. It's not as it once was where everyone watched because it was the only time you could see you favorite movie stars. Now they even use D-List TV trash to make announcements and present awards.

It's going to be a repeat of 2006 when the star-studded film Crash(Don't Look Up) shockingly won over the languid gay western Brokeback Mountain(The Power of the Dog).

Hysterical Lady Gaga wasn’t nominated. She and her fans can’t function without the validation of awards. It is the only value they see. She certainly isn’t burning up the charts and HOG was a flop. And it was shit. And she was a joke in it. Also, Gen Z doesn’t like her. She is an old, ugly hag to them. She’s Billie Eilish’s annoying great grandma.
Someone said ratings would be low if Lady fucking Gaga was not nominated? *my sides* *can’t breathe* They were going to be super duper low no matter what. Might be a bit higher now that her overhyped, shoved down our throats ugly ass face isn’t nominated.
I guess the wish this would annoy DL Madonna fans came back to bite y’all in the ass. Karma. Madonna would love to have her movie career, but Lady Gaga would kill to have Madonna’s music career. Only one will be remembered as a legend and it is the one with the massive music career.

[quote] AMPAS loves biopics about Hollywood. It's why Kidman will win Actress, why Renee Z. won two years ago.
Actually, I'd say Hollywood loves giving awards to biopics and films about the entertainment business in general, but they don't usually love the ones that reflect back on them. They don't like the lens exposing Hollywood. It is like when All About Eve and Sunset Boulevard competed. All About Eve got most of the love because it wasn't set in Hollywood. I'd say Renee Z, was helped because her performance was concerning Judy's final years on the concert and cabaret stage not back when she was on MGM soundstages. If you look at the list of actresses that have won for playing real women, Renee is basically the only one that was a Hollywood legend, the rest were royals, politicians, entertainers from other fields, or normal people. That is one reason I could see Chastain winning over Kidman. Chastain played Tammy Faye who was well known by Hollywood people, but she wasn't Hollywood so they are less concerned over how she was portrayed. Lucille Ball is still a fucking icon in Hollywood and America. And, I'm sure many older Academy voters probably met her at some point or worked with her, so they will have stronger opinions about Kidman's portrayal. Chastain has also been smart to focus a lot on Tammy Faye's views about gays and AIDS, like with RZ's Judy that could help sway the LGBT academy voters.
