***The OFFICIAL 94th ACADEMY AWARDS NOMINATIONS Thread*** PART 1

The countdown begins!

Nominations to be announced at 5:18 AM PST / 8:18 AM EST.

The excitement is mounting! The wait is nearly over!

by Anonymousreply 601February 9, 2022 3:07 AM

Oddly, I’m not that interested

by Anonymousreply 1February 8, 2022 5:24 AM

Me neither. I haven't seen a movie in 3 years so fuck it, fuck it right in the ear, I say.

by Anonymousreply 2February 8, 2022 5:27 AM

ZZZZZZ.

by Anonymousreply 3February 8, 2022 5:30 AM

Fern....

NO, IT'S FUCKING FRAN.

by Anonymousreply 4February 8, 2022 5:32 AM

The final ratings for this shit show is going to real entertainment. I can’t be arsed to throw or attend a party this year. I hope they just hand the statue to Gag now so she’ll stop campaigning for at least 24 months.

by Anonymousreply 5February 8, 2022 5:34 AM

Is there a difference between TV and Movies at this point as all the movies are now simultaneously shown on cable

by Anonymousreply 6February 8, 2022 5:38 AM

What station?

by Anonymousreply 7February 8, 2022 5:51 AM

If it was held in a train station last year, will it be at an aircraft hanger or perhaps the Port of Los Angeles this year? Or maybe just a used car lot in Torrance?

by Anonymousreply 8February 8, 2022 6:00 AM

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will unveil nominees in 23 categories in a livestream that will be available on Oscar.com, Oscars.org, the Academy’s Twitter, YouTube and Facebook platforms, along with being broadcast live on ABC’s Good Morning America and ABC News Live.

by Anonymousreply 9February 8, 2022 6:02 AM

Every category must have at least one: disabled, black, LGBTQ, LatinX, Asian and female.

by Anonymousreply 10February 8, 2022 6:33 AM

I’m waiting by my computer, ready to complain. Even if us black people overperform tomorrow morning with the nominations. And no, I don’t give a shit about other minorities.

by Anonymousreply 11February 8, 2022 6:36 AM

Compared to last year, this field's is downright 1939 level good. That's how shitty 2020 was. Because this year really wasn't all that either.

My favorite film this year was Power of the Dog. Pretty sure it will get a ton of noms. I want Kiki Dunst to get a nom for sure.

(I do want to see Gaga get a nom just to piss of DL Madonna fans.)

by Anonymousreply 12February 8, 2022 6:41 AM

An Academy Award for The House of Gucci? HA!

by Anonymousreply 13February 8, 2022 6:50 AM

Adam driver should get a nom, he’s been consistently good and was in both Annette and house of Gucci which I think were among the best films this year (in a typically weak year).

by Anonymousreply 14February 8, 2022 6:58 AM

Best Supporting Actress nominations:

Glenn Close for Swan Song

Meryl Streep for Don't Look Up

They can sit next to each other at the ceremony.

by Anonymousreply 15February 8, 2022 7:00 AM

I don't remember Glenn in "Swan Song". Perhaps her acting was so good I didn't recognize her?

Will kristen stewart be subbed ?

by Anonymousreply 17February 8, 2022 7:14 AM

R17 For what, Rose a real actress?

by Anonymousreply 18February 8, 2022 7:44 AM

In Case You Missed It = Gay Kimmel Show writer, Louis Vitel, did a Gay Oscars bit tonight....LINK (10:20 mark)....

Jen Hudson wins her second Oscar! It's gonna be SO sweet. Gaga will never swan away with that prize.

by Anonymousreply 20February 8, 2022 7:55 AM

Their ratings have been in the tank for years. They haven't learned that the viewers want a break from politics. We don't want to hear the annoying shpeel from some of these jokers. Stay with good old glamour and movie talk.

by Anonymousreply 21February 8, 2022 8:02 AM

Remember when the movies that were nominated/or won was also popular in the box office?

by Anonymousreply 22February 8, 2022 8:09 AM

I hope GaGa is snubbed. Jaime Dornan is going to get nominated. Dornan is ex "roommates" with closeted Andrew Garfield. DL knows what that means.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 23February 8, 2022 8:11 AM

Around 2011-13 the best movie winners started to be forgettable, niche and pretentious and only for the entertainment industry types than the masses and it’s been like that ever since.

by Anonymousreply 24February 8, 2022 8:23 AM

BELFAST should do well, even though it's not about the Black Irish.

by Anonymousreply 25February 8, 2022 8:55 AM

All the nominees are Netflix and shit. They should go up for Emmys.

by Anonymousreply 26February 8, 2022 8:59 AM

If Gags get a nom and Chastain doesn't, I'm done with the Oscars. There were a few moments I thought Chastain *was* Tammy Faye. I had no emotional reaction whatsoever to the Gucci Lifetime movie.

by Anonymousreply 27February 8, 2022 9:24 AM

Jessica Chastain is not getting nominated. Neither is Adam Driver.

by Anonymousreply 28February 8, 2022 9:50 AM

I would love to see Simon Rex nominated in Best Actor and Ruth Negga and Marlee Maitlin nominated in Best Supporting Actress.

by Anonymousreply 29February 8, 2022 9:52 AM

Gaga is the next Cher.

by Anonymousreply 30February 8, 2022 9:54 AM

[quote] Gaga is the next Cher.

And Cher was the next Liza, who was the next Julie, except that Julie did it backwards.

by Anonymousreply 31February 8, 2022 9:57 AM

R31, poor Madonna.

by Anonymousreply 32February 8, 2022 10:10 AM

Have they created a category for Best Waxwork?

by Anonymousreply 33February 8, 2022 10:16 AM

If Rex Reed married Simon Rex, he'd be Rex Rex.

by Anonymousreply 34February 8, 2022 10:22 AM

Pulling for Simon Rex, Penelope Cruz, and Alana Haim. I also have a soft spot for Jessica Chastain. Hoping for her as well.

Kiki BETTER get in.

That is all.

by Anonymousreply 35February 8, 2022 10:28 AM

The Academy members adore Nicole Kidman, she will be nominated.

by Anonymousreply 36February 8, 2022 11:01 AM

Hold me Keith. I'm scared.

by Anonymousreply 37February 8, 2022 11:06 AM

Which stars do you think are up at the ungodly hour anxiously waiting.

I'd say Kidman, Chastain, Branagh, Jada & Will.

McDormand would be in bed sleeping like a baby not giving a fuck.

by Anonymousreply 38February 8, 2022 11:07 AM

I'm hoping for Chastain, Garfield and Udo to pull off a surprise nomination.

by Anonymousreply 39February 8, 2022 11:18 AM

#OscarsSoIrrelevant

by Anonymousreply 40February 8, 2022 11:25 AM

Does anyone on DL have a Members Sign In on the Oscars website?....What do the fancy people get to see that the rest of us don't?

by Anonymousreply 41February 8, 2022 11:42 AM

R39, Udo Kier? That would be a lovely surprise, practically a miracle. I loved his film Swan Song (dir: Todd Stephens). Highly recommend it.

by Anonymousreply 42February 8, 2022 12:13 PM

R41, Probably nothing that won’t be reported in the press within the next 8 hours.

by Anonymousreply 43February 8, 2022 12:15 PM

Do the Governor’s Board (or whatever) get to look at the math? Like can Laura Dern see the math from past races?

by Anonymousreply 44February 8, 2022 12:16 PM

[quote] Pulling for Simon Rex...

and Simon Rex is pulling.

"Does anyone on DL have a Members Sign In on the Oscars website?....What do the fancy people get to see that the rest of us don't?"

They get to see archived clips of Michael Eisner blowing loads on pictures of Minnie Mouse.

by Anonymousreply 46February 8, 2022 12:25 PM

OP if this is what you call mounting excitement, the heart bleeds for you.

by Anonymousreply 47February 8, 2022 12:27 PM

Chadwick Boseman better get all the nominations.

by Anonymousreply 48February 8, 2022 12:28 PM

I'm gonna buy a gun and go on a murder spree if Jessica Chastain gets snubbed.

by Anonymousreply 49February 8, 2022 12:28 PM

Why does anyone care too much about the Oscars anymore.

I detect it aint the event is used to be.

by Anonymousreply 50February 8, 2022 12:31 PM

Will the Oscars itself be part of their In Memoriam reel?

by Anonymousreply 51February 8, 2022 12:32 PM

Simon Rex will be nominated.

by Anonymousreply 52February 8, 2022 12:37 PM

If Chrissy Metz isn't nominated this whole thing is going to be a farce..

by Anonymousreply 53February 8, 2022 12:40 PM

R51 for the statuette

by Anonymousreply 54February 8, 2022 12:43 PM

I don't think there is that much talk on politics really. I hope Cruz, Chastain are nominated. Gaga, Colman, and Kidman will be I would say. I think Haim was good but wouldn't mind if she misses out. I liked Cooper Hoffman better. Jamie Dornan is gay? Gosh you DL insiders are always on the money!

by Anonymousreply 55February 8, 2022 12:44 PM

Oscar needs be neutered and made genderless!

by Anonymousreply 56February 8, 2022 12:45 PM

I'm getting so excited I could shit.

by Anonymousreply 57February 8, 2022 12:56 PM

That Haim girl was on the Sunday Morning CBS show with her cunty, unattractive sisters and they should all star in the next Hocus Pocus franchise. Whatever happened to attractive movie stars?

by Anonymousreply 58February 8, 2022 12:58 PM

Why is Gaga getting such a huge push? That film/performance was essentially 1/2 step up from Showgirls level entertainment.

The screwing on the work table was laughable.

Do people not see through her schtick? It couldn't be any more transparent.

by Anonymousreply 59February 8, 2022 12:59 PM

And here come the anti woke trolls with literally the same shit they repeat ad nauseam.

by Anonymousreply 60February 8, 2022 1:00 PM

R49 = Jessica Chastain

by Anonymousreply 61February 8, 2022 1:01 PM

And like clockwork, here come the anti-diversity cunts, chiming in like Pavlov's dog at the mere mention of Academy Awards. Blowing your head off at Denzel's nomination would spare me the trouble of blocking you.

by Anonymousreply 66February 8, 2022 1:12 PM

And here are the anti anti woke trolls (who never leave this board) with literally the same shit they repeat ad nauseam.

This is their level of "humour."

by Anonymousreply 67February 8, 2022 1:12 PM

You can reference their posts with a simple R#.

Please don’t quote them. Not every poster wants to read their bs.

by Anonymousreply 68February 8, 2022 1:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 98February 8, 2022 1:30 PM

Who gives a shit what this fuckwad thinks?

by Anonymousreply 99February 8, 2022 1:30 PM

I guess we'll have to wait until either next year for the 95th or five more years for the hundredth for them to ask Janet Gaynor and Emil Jannings, the first acting winners, to announced the nominees.

by Anonymousreply 100February 8, 2022 1:31 PM

This filler is why people hate the Academy Awards. Just give the damn nominations already.

by Anonymousreply 101February 8, 2022 1:31 PM

I can’t believe they’re dragging this out like this

by Anonymousreply 102February 8, 2022 1:31 PM

Also, the Oscars show doesn’t need a theme!

by Anonymousreply 103February 8, 2022 1:32 PM

by Anonymousreply 121February 8, 2022 1:34 PM

Titans for Best International! Maybe a Best Director nom as well?

by Anonymousreply 143February 8, 2022 1:38 PM

The House of Gucci as best movie of the year? Did you get to see a director's cut where the rest of the camp classic was put back in? Because the version I saw had about 15 minutes of fun, the rest was ploddy and boring, and had Jared Leto's 1980s spaghetti sauce commercial accent. Did Leto do a voiceover narration track for the version you saw?

by Anonymousreply 144February 8, 2022 1:38 PM

ANDREW!!!!

by Anonymousreply 145February 8, 2022 1:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 156February 8, 2022 1:40 PM

Plemons doesn't really do much in Power of the Dog to deserve a nomination.

by Anonymousreply 157February 8, 2022 1:40 PM

Leslie is a great choice. Social media loves him

by Anonymousreply 166February 8, 2022 1:41 PM

Sorkin snubbed for directing too!

by Anonymousreply 167February 8, 2022 1:41 PM

Hilarious Gaga was snubbed cause she was the only one nominated everywhere in all the big awards.

by Anonymousreply 168February 8, 2022 1:42 PM

Seriously, so tired of Kidman's nominations.

Nightmare Alley remake is just as boring as the original, and at least that one didn't have Rooney Mara.

by Anonymousreply 171February 8, 2022 1:42 PM

End of March, why so long wait?

by Anonymousreply 172February 8, 2022 1:42 PM

This is one of the worst crop of nominees in years. Unbelieveble.

by Anonymousreply 173February 8, 2022 1:43 PM

Kidman should have been in the Special Effects category, not Acting. And even then, she'd lose.

Bardem-Cruz should win as Husband and Wife Bests!

by Anonymousreply 174February 8, 2022 1:43 PM

Thrilled for Stewart.

by Anonymousreply 175February 8, 2022 1:43 PM

Why is everything Traci says so painful?

by Anonymousreply 176February 8, 2022 1:43 PM

No one has been talking about the Gaga movie since November

by Anonymousreply 177February 8, 2022 1:43 PM

Why so much love for "Nightmare Alley"?

by Anonymousreply 178February 8, 2022 1:43 PM

At least they recognized Being the Ricados for the CRAPFEST it is

by Anonymousreply 179February 8, 2022 1:44 PM

So, Don’t Look Up got no acting noms?

by Anonymousreply 180February 8, 2022 1:44 PM

[quote]Disney really blew it not outing We Dont Talk about Bruno in for best song

Why the other one is going to win anyway?

by Anonymousreply 181February 8, 2022 1:44 PM

I bet Lady Fuckface is throwing dishes screaming in her faux Italian/Romanian accent right about now!

by Anonymousreply 182February 8, 2022 1:44 PM

I thought Nightmare Alley was so dull. Looked great and decent acting. That's about it.

by Anonymousreply 183February 8, 2022 1:44 PM

I’ve seen four of the 10 best picture nominations, I have a little catching up to do

by Anonymousreply 184February 8, 2022 1:45 PM

Tsk, tsk. Natasha er- Lady GaGAH was left out like a cold bowl of borscht.

by Anonymousreply 185February 8, 2022 1:45 PM

Three Oscar noms equals a CRAPFEST?

by Anonymousreply 186February 8, 2022 1:45 PM

Why they comeback to this Jewfro guy? They should have those enthusiastic Youtube twins on instead?

by Anonymousreply 187February 8, 2022 1:45 PM

Wow, the Don't Look Up actors got snubbed! Leo thought he had his "I'm as mad as hell!" moment, too.

by Anonymousreply 188February 8, 2022 1:45 PM

No nominations for writing or directing, r186/Aaron, nor for best picture

by Anonymousreply 189February 8, 2022 1:46 PM

Chastain could wind up winning!

by Anonymousreply 190February 8, 2022 1:46 PM

Did they snub the Lady GaGa song from her movie?

by Anonymousreply 191February 8, 2022 1:46 PM

There was talk of Spiderman getting BP because there are 10 now. Ha ha.

by Anonymousreply 196February 8, 2022 1:47 PM

[quote]Did they snub the Lady GaGa song from her movie?

Yes. Song nominees:

"Be Alive" from "King Richard"

"Dos Oruguitas" from "Encanto"

"Down to Joy" from "Belfast"

"No Time to Die" from "No Time to Die"

"Somehow You Do" from "Four Good Days"

by Anonymousreply 197February 8, 2022 1:47 PM

Rachel Zegler was a BIG snub

by Anonymousreply 198February 8, 2022 1:48 PM

Gaga had a song in HoG?

by Anonymousreply 199February 8, 2022 1:48 PM

How they get a 50+ year old Stephen Sondheim song in there, when they didn’t even nominate it when Adam Driver sang it?

by Anonymousreply 200February 8, 2022 1:49 PM

Dang I thought they would nominate that Ariana Grande song just so she can perform. But they already have Beyonce so they probably thought that's even better or enough. It's a good and funny pop song.

by Anonymousreply 201February 8, 2022 1:49 PM

Did I miss my shoo-in nomination?

by Anonymousreply 202February 8, 2022 1:49 PM

Denzel Washington…….I am sooooo looking forward to the sour look on his face when he loses again.

by Anonymousreply 203February 8, 2022 1:50 PM

Did House of Gucci get anything? I’m glad it didn’t receive any acting noms b/c it was pretty bad throughout. They’re all capable actors obviously just poorly directed with a bad screenplay.

by Anonymousreply 204February 8, 2022 1:50 PM

You know even if Will wins, Jada will find something to complain about.

For some reason until looking it up just now, I thought King Richard was a Shakespeare adaptation like The Tragedy of Macbeth, lol. I'm more interested in it now though.

by Anonymousreply 205February 8, 2022 1:51 PM

So glad they didn't reward the mess that was House of Gucci (although I wouldn't have been mad if they gave Driver a nom since he was the only one who was consistently good throughout the stitched-together movie). Too bad they rewarded basic Stewart's PR team for their nonsense. Haven't seen Being the Ricardos, but from the clips I'm sideeying Kidman's nom but OK with Bardem. Glad for Chastain--she did a great job what could have been a cartoon. And yes, the makeup nom for that film was legit--Tammy Faye's makeup evolution was a subtle but very important part of the "story."

by Anonymousreply 206February 8, 2022 1:51 PM

what's the average age of the nominees in the acting categories?

#oscarssoold

by Anonymousreply 207February 8, 2022 1:51 PM

I hope Belfast wins everything it's nominated for. It's a brilliant film, it's lovely to look at, it has great performances, it's funny, it's sad, and it makes you feel.

by Anonymousreply 208February 8, 2022 1:52 PM

Power of the Dog gets 12 Nominations, will easily take Best Picture (first Best Picture for Netflix), Best Director (first sequential female Best Director winners in history), probably Kirsten Dunst in Supporting, probably Best Cinematography (first female cinematographer to win if happens)

Lowest rated Oscars in history guaranteed.

by Anonymousreply 209February 8, 2022 1:53 PM

I am rooting for Dunst/Plemmons, R174, as winning married couple.

by Anonymousreply 210February 8, 2022 1:54 PM

I think Cumberbatch -- who I don't like -- deserves Best Actor, R209, though I think it will go to either Will Smith or Denzel.

by Anonymousreply 211February 8, 2022 1:54 PM

I'm rooting for Dunst to win, but I have a feeling she'll lose due to the current social climate.

by Anonymousreply 212February 8, 2022 1:54 PM

House of Gucci was just dreadful. But, so was the Meet the Ricardos.

by Anonymousreply 213February 8, 2022 1:55 PM

I really didn’t think Plemmons had much to do in that film. I get he’s well liked but surely he will have other opportunities for a nom. Makes me think a lot of voters didn’t watch the films, as usual.

by Anonymousreply 214February 8, 2022 1:56 PM

[quote]I'm rooting for Dunst to win, but I have a feeling she'll lose due to the current social climate.

Current social climate? You mean lose to Ariana de Bose, a black actress who gives a phenomenal performance in West Side Story?

by Anonymousreply 215February 8, 2022 1:56 PM

I’m happy for Dame Judi (the best part of Belfast and puzzlingly under-mentioned), Ciaran Hinds, Jesse Plemons (the best part of otherwise dull Dog), and Drive My Car. I hope Drive or Belfast takes it all.

I didn’t like any of the films that landed the Best Actresses in that category. All tripe. Too bad.

by Anonymousreply 216February 8, 2022 1:56 PM

[quote]But, so was the Meet the Ricardos.

Oh, DEAR!!

by Anonymousreply 217February 8, 2022 1:56 PM

This thread and the one the night of, savaging this shit, are the only reason I am paying attention this year.

by Anonymousreply 218February 8, 2022 1:56 PM

Hopefully Will Smith and Denzel can reenact the "Don't be kissing no men " conversation they had years ago on this years show.

by Anonymousreply 219February 8, 2022 1:57 PM

Nobody thought Sorkin would get a directing nom and I’m glad they snubbed his screenplay. I’ve never thought he was all that. Distinct is different from good.

by Anonymousreply 220February 8, 2022 1:57 PM

I know, I couldn't even be bothered to look up the title.

by Anonymousreply 221February 8, 2022 1:57 PM

[quote] I really didn’t think Plemmons had much to do in that film.

His was the only performance in the film that seemed natural to me. Benedict Crapfest was unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 222February 8, 2022 1:57 PM

r217, you're why no one thinks the "oh dear" shit is funny anymore.

by Anonymousreply 223February 8, 2022 1:58 PM

[quote]Bardem-Cruz should win as Husband and Wife Bests!

Bardem/Cruz v. Plemons/Dunst -- who will win?!

by Anonymousreply 224February 8, 2022 1:58 PM

Biggest snubs: Gags, Ziegler, Rex (the Academy was never going to let that one happen), and Driver.

by Anonymousreply 225February 8, 2022 1:59 PM

Not Cruz, she looks like someone smeared a painting of Salma Hayek, who was the only thing I liked about HoG.

by Anonymousreply 226February 8, 2022 1:59 PM

Only real horserace is Best Actress - three nominees already have Oscars, so its Chastain vs Stewart.

Every other category - meh.

by Anonymousreply 227February 8, 2022 2:00 PM

HAHAHHAHAHA NO GAGA.

by Anonymousreply 228February 8, 2022 2:00 PM

Troy Kotsur gave the best acting performance I saw this cycle, and only had a single word line, in an otherwise corny movie. Well deserved to him. Best Supporting Actor is a great category this year.

by Anonymousreply 229February 8, 2022 2:00 PM

Lady Gaga’s snub is a shocker.

And I’m glad Sunglasses (H.E.R.) didn’t make it in Best Song!

by Anonymousreply 230February 8, 2022 2:00 PM

The Nightmare Alley Best Picture nom is a head scratcher. Obviously block voting from the studio that produced it got it nominated but I don’t think it’ll increase interest in the film much, which gets off to a really shaky start and barely improves from there.

by Anonymousreply 231February 8, 2022 2:00 PM

There are so many good things in Belfast, and the grandparents are among the best. Happy for those nominations.

by Anonymousreply 232February 8, 2022 2:01 PM

The biggest snubs are Gaga, Catriona and Sorkin.

by Anonymousreply 233February 8, 2022 2:01 PM

Is King Richard really that good? The previews screamed "glorified Lifetime movie" to me.

And is Dune this year's Mad Max: Fury Road?

by Anonymousreply 234February 8, 2022 2:01 PM

[quote]Obviously block voting from the studio that produced it

Twentieth Century Fox doesn't exist anymore and Disney buried this because they don't care about holdovers

by Anonymousreply 235February 8, 2022 2:02 PM

No nomination for "Vivian Vance".

by Anonymousreply 236February 8, 2022 2:03 PM

How heavy is the Oscar? Has anyone ever dropped it on their manicured foot? I miss the days when they had streakers, causing David Niven to momentarily change his facial expression.

by Anonymousreply 237February 8, 2022 2:03 PM

I haven’t thought twice about King Richard since seeing it last November. It’s fine, like a family film, I guess. But I’ll never watch it again.

by Anonymousreply 238February 8, 2022 2:03 PM

I loved Belfast but I didn’t think Catriona was particularly good, especially compared to Judi? I mean, I was fine with the overdramatic zigs and zags of her over dramatic performance because the film wasn’t supposed to be naturalistic, but she was the weakest of the adult actors by far.

by Anonymousreply 239February 8, 2022 2:03 PM

I can’t believe Being the Ricardos got so many nominations and Don’t Look Up got a BP nom. What a fucking joke.

by Anonymousreply 240February 8, 2022 2:04 PM

I guarantee many people who nominated Nightmare Alley never watched it, but it "seems" like an appropriate nominee so it went it.

by Anonymousreply 241February 8, 2022 2:04 PM

I don't get nominating Dench(again) over Balfe.

by Anonymousreply 242February 8, 2022 2:04 PM

Cruz always looks like Mother Superior from the convent is standing behind her. Does she every look anything but placid?

by Anonymousreply 243February 8, 2022 2:05 PM

Dench’s was the best acting in Belfast, and it was the heart of the film—the love the family had to leave behind to survive.

by Anonymousreply 244February 8, 2022 2:06 PM

LOL GUCCI shut out completely. Absolutely love it. The Academy got it right.

by Anonymousreply 245February 8, 2022 2:06 PM

And Scott Feinberg at THR stood by his prediction for Jude Hill (the boy in Belfast) until the very end, even incl. him in his final predictions a few days ago without a single pre-cursor nomination or win. Not suggesting anything untoward at all - but from an awards prediction standpoint, what was that about?

by Anonymousreply 246February 8, 2022 2:07 PM

Dench was too old for the role. She looked and acted like a great grandmother. I didn’t believe she was married to Hinds (who was magnificent) for a second.

by Anonymousreply 247February 8, 2022 2:07 PM

^^In Best Actor!

by Anonymousreply 248February 8, 2022 2:08 PM

Pretty sure Nightmare Alley and Don't Look Up are both "only because there are 10 spaces" nominees. They probably would have squeezed WSS in even with only 5.

by Anonymousreply 249February 8, 2022 2:09 PM

Both the grandparents in Belfast looked pretty old for their son to be Jamie Dornan, but Belfast during those years wasn’t the lap of luxury, and maybe he was a surprise late in life baby.

by Anonymousreply 250February 8, 2022 2:09 PM

[quote]Dench was too old for the role. She looked and acted like a great grandmother. I didn’t believe she was married to Hinds (who was magnificent) for a second.

I can't remember any scenes where Judi Dench and Jamie Dornan were alone together as grandmother and son. I remember scenes with grandmother and grandson, grandfather and son, grandfather and grandson but not Dench and Dornan.

by Anonymousreply 251February 8, 2022 2:10 PM

I didn't care for Hinds as Mr. Rochester, he was too emotional. I did love him in Persuasion.

by Anonymousreply 252February 8, 2022 2:10 PM

Jude Hill couldn’t act, they just cast a sweet, wide-eyed kid to play a sweet, wide-eyed kid.

by Anonymousreply 253February 8, 2022 2:11 PM

Ciaran Hinds on the 19 year age gap between him and Dench

[quote]As “Pop” – the grandfather of nine-year-old Buddy – Hinds is a back-yard philosopher who dispenses advice – and maths homework – from a throne on the outside toilet, while the formidable Granny (Judi Dench) sits at the window, listening in, with a put-down always to hand. There is a 19-year age gap between Hinds and Dench. “I said: ‘I’ll age up and you age down and we’ll meet in the middle,” he says.

by Anonymousreply 256February 8, 2022 2:12 PM

All Irish grannies look old before their time.

by Anonymousreply 257February 8, 2022 2:13 PM

Isn't Belfast set in the late 60s (haven't seen it yet)? People generally used to look much older than we are used to now, plus the stress of living through the Troubles would rapidly age anyone. I think it's realistic to have the grandparents looking that old.

by Anonymousreply 258February 8, 2022 2:13 PM

The question now is, does the Academy give LMM his Oscar for the other song from 'Encanto'? Or do Dead Eyes Eilish and her brother get it for 'No Time to Die'?

by Anonymousreply 259February 8, 2022 2:14 PM

Movies are really long Tic Toks

by Anonymousreply 260February 8, 2022 2:14 PM

Ciaran Hinds is 29 years older than Jamie Dornan, and Jamie Dornan is 28 years older than Jude Hill.

by Anonymousreply 261February 8, 2022 2:16 PM

Funny that I read that Stewart "campaigned hard" despite saying she doesn't give a shit about Oscars. Guess it paid off.

Happy that Cruz made it through.

by Anonymousreply 262February 8, 2022 2:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 263February 8, 2022 2:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 279February 8, 2022 2:34 PM

I find Gaga's snub quite delicious.

You know she had done a Jennifer Aniston and already booked a suite at the Four Seasons to talk this morning about how: "I'm so shocked. But just being nominated with those wonderful women is an honor."

by Anonymousreply 280February 8, 2022 2:37 PM

by Anonymousreply 292February 8, 2022 2:45 PM

BREAKING NEWS: Suicide hotlines light up with Z'rs threatening to jump out of first story windows due to the Gag Gag snub.

by Anonymousreply 293February 8, 2022 2:46 PM

I'm very shocked and disappointed to see Lady Gaga get snubbed. She really deserved this one and I thought she had it. I think this rejection will inspire her to give us something really special for her next film, though. Her time will come someday, just not this year. I hope Jessica Chastain or Kristen Stewart takes it instead. How boring it would be if Olivia Colman won. I also hope Kodi Smit-McPhee takes home Best Supporting Actor.

I also saw an article saying Candyman was on the shortlist for Best Original Score. I knew it was unlikely but I still hoped. It didn't happen, though.

by Anonymousreply 294February 8, 2022 2:46 PM

I'm going with Ariana DeBose for Best Supporting Actress, Ciaran Hings for Best Supporting Actor, Penelope Cruz for Best Actress, and Will Smith for Best Actor.

R294 Gaga's performance was a caricature, not a character.

She's not nearly the thespian she thinks she is.

by Anonymousreply 299February 8, 2022 2:48 PM

Beyoncé vs. Billie Eilish for Best Original Song. That'll be exciting to see if one of them takes it home.

by Anonymousreply 300February 8, 2022 2:49 PM

Troy Kotsur in CODA will win and Kushner's WEST SIDE STORY was excellent and should have been nominated.

by Anonymousreply 301February 8, 2022 2:50 PM

I'm pissed about The Lucille Ball movie getting anything. Except I do love Xavier Bardem. I am pissed off about Kristen Stewart getting nominated. I love Adam Driver. I'm not sorry for Gaga except if they can give a nod to Stewart and Nicole Kidman well, shit. And the actors in Passing got snubbed. That was a shitty thing to do. They could have at least got a Best Picture nomination. I thought Power of the Dog was pure shit. I need to check out the foreign movies.

by Anonymousreply 302February 8, 2022 2:50 PM

Gaga is Streep compared to Kristin Stewart.

West Side Story nominations except for DuBose were filler noms.

by Anonymousreply 303February 8, 2022 2:51 PM

I especially agree about the Passing actresses. They should have been nominated best actress and best supporting over Kidman especially.

by Anonymousreply 304February 8, 2022 2:52 PM

What is this Drive My Car movie I've never heard of that got 4 nominations?

by Anonymousreply 305February 8, 2022 2:53 PM

Gaga got the Golden Globe nomination, the Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, SAG Awards. And she was the only one nominated in all of them. Yet she didn't get this one. I just don't understand how this could happen. Somebody in the Academy must have it out for her. Either that or they just want to be contrarian.

by Anonymousreply 306February 8, 2022 2:53 PM

Gaga was definitely a snub. A BIG snub. It's either a "who did she piss off" snub or a "we know what she did to get those other noms and we're not having that" snub.

by Anonymousreply 307February 8, 2022 2:54 PM

R306 The Academy doesn't like actors who think they're entitled to an Oscar nomination simply because they got lesser awards for their performances.

by Anonymousreply 309February 8, 2022 2:55 PM

Parallel Mothers was clumsy and disappointing, it didn't compare to Talk to Her or All about my Mother. Pedro should stick to melodrama and not try to incorporate political allegory. Penelope's apartment was gorgeous, though, and she looked beautiful

by Anonymousreply 323February 8, 2022 3:05 PM

R315, Don't Look Up was absolutely worthy of a Best Picture nom. It was very good. I'll take it any day of the week over the dreadful The Power of the Dog.

by Anonymousreply 324February 8, 2022 3:05 PM

I’ve said from day one that Chastain would win this in the end. I thought that the moment I walked out of the theater. She was incredible in that movie.

by Anonymousreply 325February 8, 2022 3:05 PM

It is kind of funny to see Gaga get the freeze when she's been so over the top in campaigning, but I do feel bad because she was good in parts of the movie. She was really hurt by the fact that House of Gucci is a mess--if it were a more cohesive film and with better editing, I could imagine her performance being great.

Stewart getting the nom is practically offensive. They're rewarding 10 years of her PR team pushing nonsense articles about her being a great actress despite having the most limited range and her being an in demand movie star despite every single movie of hers since Twilight flopping. And then she pulls her "I'm so RILL and EDGY and I don't give a fuck" while running the most obvious desperate campaign second only to Gaga. She is the definition of a basic white lady.

Kidman getting a nom is also cringeworthy, but at least she has a long career of strong performances. Her rep as a good actress was earned, so the Academy being lazy and giving her a nod for a movie most of them probably didn't bother watching is annoying but at least kind of makes sense.

by Anonymousreply 326February 8, 2022 3:06 PM

R323 How did Hulu get to drop Spencer today of all days, or have they just not been promoting that they have it until now?

by Anonymousreply 327February 8, 2022 3:06 PM

R299 And what in the freaking hell was Chastain's performance?

But honestly, Best Actress looks so bad. Besides Colman and Cruz, all you have are drag queens and a plank of wood.

by Anonymousreply 328February 8, 2022 3:10 PM

Disney simply did not predict We Don’t Talk About Bruno was anything special and submitted the other song so it wouldn’t have any competition

This will likely cause LMM to fail to EGOT this year

[QUOTE] R299, And what in the freaking hell was Chastain's performance?

You must be a Gen Z or someone who never saw Tammy Faye in real time.

by Anonymousreply 330February 8, 2022 3:11 PM

I thought Chastain's performance was good. Her Tammy Faye was a fleshed out person, not the cartoon most people imagined her to be.

I can see why she and the movie might be polarizing, though, so that's not a good sign for her chances of winning. If not her than I hope it's Cruz (she's overdue) or Coleman. Kidman would be a joke, Stewart would be a travesty.

by Anonymousreply 331February 8, 2022 3:12 PM

I will give Stewart the edge over Chastain as the Oscar for BA historical favors women playing either heads of state/royalty or prostitutes.

by Anonymousreply 332February 8, 2022 3:13 PM

Who will vote for Bey's song?

by Anonymousreply 333February 8, 2022 3:15 PM

R330 and you never saw a Patrizia Reggiani interview.

by Anonymousreply 334February 8, 2022 3:16 PM

I bet a lot of voters thought Gaga was a sure thing and voted for others.

by Anonymousreply 335February 8, 2022 3:16 PM

How is Penelope Cruz “overdue” for an Oscar? She already has one.

by Anonymousreply 336February 8, 2022 3:17 PM

Gaga is sooo not derivative.

by Anonymousreply 337February 8, 2022 3:18 PM

I enjoyed Kristen Stewarts performance in Spencer. She really managed to adopted Diana's aristocratic posture while showing her sensitivity.

by Anonymousreply 338February 8, 2022 3:19 PM

R336, the one she has is supporting I think. She's overdue for lead.

by Anonymousreply 339February 8, 2022 3:22 PM

^ Sorry, meant to add in this list of nominees she's overdue.

by Anonymousreply 340February 8, 2022 3:23 PM

LOL “overdue in lead” is not a thing

by Anonymousreply 341February 8, 2022 3:23 PM

Stewart was great in Spencer, and has been great in several things over the past several years -- the "plank of wood" comments are from people who still think making fun of Twilight is the cutting edge of comedy

by Anonymousreply 342February 8, 2022 3:28 PM

Kristen still deserves a Oscar for going into diabetic shock in the arms of Jodie Foster in Panic Room or trying to evade whatever Timothy Olyphant was trying to do to her in Safety of Objects, so I’m fine with her getting an Oscar no matter what film.

by Anonymousreply 345February 8, 2022 3:35 PM

I guess it was too much to ask for the Oscars to honor more independent films; I was hoping at least Riley Keough and Colman Domingo would get supporting nods for "Zola"

And what happened to Joaquin Phoenix's movie "C'mon, C'mon"? They were really talking that one up.

by Anonymousreply 346February 8, 2022 3:37 PM

Right, because everyone wants another vegan animal cruelty lecture served up with their win.

by Anonymousreply 350February 8, 2022 3:42 PM

A lot of people on here have been telling us things for months.

by Anonymousreply 351February 8, 2022 3:42 PM

R342 there's no point in arguing opinions as if they were facts, so I'll just say I disagree. I've seen many of Stewart's movies because I tend to gravitate towards the indie fare she favors and/or is stuck with since she can't pull an audience into theaters. I've never seen a single performance of hers where I thought "oh wow, she's good." I find her mostly bland and forgettable, even in the films where she's gotten obviously orchestrated over the top praise. She even made Joan Jett boring, which is a cardinal sin. And in Spencer she did the polar opposite of what Chastain did in Tammy Faye--Chastain made a caricature into a real person and Stewart made a real person into a character.

by Anonymousreply 352February 8, 2022 3:43 PM

Yes! Where are the noms for "MASS?" WTF??????????????????

by Anonymousreply 355February 8, 2022 3:49 PM

Chastain for the win.

by Anonymousreply 356February 8, 2022 3:54 PM

And that was a legitimate movie R275, which does not compare with jerking off multiple times in a porn flick.

But you know that.

by Anonymousreply 357February 8, 2022 3:58 PM

R341, I remember there being an "overdue" narrative about Denzel Washington even though he had won a supporting Oscar earlier in his career.

[quote]Of course, the role went to Denzel Washington, whose fire-breathing performance as Harris earned him what many believed was an overdue first Academy Award for Best Actor. (Washington had previously won Best Supporting Actor for Glory in 1990.)

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 358February 8, 2022 3:58 PM

Denzel’s Oscar for Training Day was well-deserved, not an “owed,” even if people felt he was owed one. He was incredible in that movie, as was Hawke.

by Anonymousreply 359February 8, 2022 3:59 PM

I'm so glad they followed the Official Diversity Restrictions:

Best Lead Actor

Javier Bardem (“Being the Ricardos”) [LATIN X]

Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”)

Andrew Garfield (“Tick, Tick … Boom!”) [GAY]

Will Smith (“King Richard”) [BLACK]

Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”) [MENTALLY DISABLED]

by Anonymousreply 360February 8, 2022 4:00 PM

It’s not a snub. At all. No one who matters in the industry cares about Googoo and her complete lack of acting talent R279. Certainly not the Academy, and they’re still the gatekeeper. You don’t like it, take it up with them. The industry is not going to collapse because a singer who started acting five minutes ago didn’t get nominated for an Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 361February 8, 2022 4:01 PM

R359, I was not saying or even suggesting that Denzel didn't deserve lead for Training Day. He's one of the few actors who could legit win for almost any performance. But he'd been nominated at least a couple of times for lead before Training Day and there was definitely a narrative of "it's time" for him that year.

by Anonymousreply 362February 8, 2022 4:03 PM

Lol, comparing Penelope Cruz to Googoo is DE👏🏻LU👏🏻SIO👏🏻NAL. Penelope Cruz is an incredible actress. Period.

by Anonymousreply 363February 8, 2022 4:04 PM

Anyone know why Frances McDormand didn't get a nom for TTOM?

by Anonymousreply 364February 8, 2022 4:04 PM

The only reason Lady Gaga was nominated for the Bafta and not Kristen stewart is because it’s headed by Prince William.

by Anonymousreply 365February 8, 2022 4:04 PM

I think Cruz will win.

by Anonymousreply 366February 8, 2022 4:04 PM

[quote]The Oscar statue weighs 8 pounds.

No, dummy, that's the human head. Duh.

And heads are gonna roll, r367!

by Anonymousreply 368February 8, 2022 4:09 PM

R365 is that you, Lainey? Those checks from Team Stewart and Team Sussex combined must be pretty hefty for you to push that line of BS.

by Anonymousreply 369February 8, 2022 4:10 PM

The Academy wants diversity yet Denzel Washington and Will Smith seem to be the "go to" actors for white audiences for years now.

by Anonymousreply 370February 8, 2022 4:10 PM

Penelope Cruz was probably offered HoG before Gaga and had the good sense to turn it down.

by Anonymousreply 371February 8, 2022 4:15 PM

Javier Bardem is not "Latin"; he's European.

by Anonymousreply 372February 8, 2022 4:15 PM

House of Gucci SHOULD have been a great movie--the backstory is amazing. It could have been the Goodfellas of the fashion world. I don't know what the fuck happened, but if Cruz or anyone else turned it town that was a smart decision only in hindsight.

by Anonymousreply 373February 8, 2022 4:16 PM

Ouch. They kicked Lady Gaga I’m the face.

Glad though for Jessica Chastain.

Hasn’t Streep set a record for the actress to appear in the most best picture nominees?

To Nicole, Congratulations 🤡

by Anonymousreply 374February 8, 2022 4:18 PM

I am just so glad that Jessica Chastain was nominated for her performance as Tammy Faye. I can't quit raving about that performance, it really was one of the best biopic performances I've seen since Sissy Spacek as Loretta.

Also, the Oscars might be able to draw in viewers this year just with their musical performances, if the original song contenders are sung by the original artists. You would have Beyonce, Van Morrison, Billie Ellish, and Reba, all performing, that should lift ratings with a variety of people.

by Anonymousreply 375February 8, 2022 4:19 PM

Most satisfying snubs are the overrated, obnoxious Lady Gaga and the blowhard that is Aaron Sorkin.

by Anonymousreply 376February 8, 2022 4:20 PM

Kristen Stewart is a terrific actress but she also has something beyond talent which is that the camera LOVES her. She has a unique presence on camera. I mean, watch Personal Shopper - the effortless cool and obvious intelligence and capability. Or Certain Women or Clouds of Sils Maria.

A lot of you don’t seem to understand that acting on camera is unique to way the actor engages with the lens. She’s a terrific actress, yes, and also in many circles a cultural icon. Give her that.

Spencer is a polarising film but incredibly ballsy. And she carries it from start to finish. I’m ready for wherever she does next.

by Anonymousreply 377February 8, 2022 4:20 PM

With no Spider-Man, Leo or Gaga, you can forget about ratings

by Anonymousreply 378February 8, 2022 4:22 PM

[quote]You would have Beyonce, Van Morrison, Billie Ellish, and Reba, all performing, that should lift ratings with a variety of people.

If antivaxxer Van Morrison performs, that would also increase new COVID infections with a variety of people.

If it weren't for Oscar night commentary on Datalounge I would have stopped watching years ago.

by Anonymousreply 380February 8, 2022 4:23 PM

The Tammy Faye thing - I can’t even watch the clips of it, the prosthetics are so distracting and ridiculous. And I’m uncomfortable with Chastain promoting her as some kind of AIDS activist and saviour of gay men in the ‘80s. I don’t doubt the factual event of the interview depicted but it’s impact seems to be grossly overstated.

Ultimately, I didn’t care about TFB at the time and I don’t care about her now. It just seems like such Oscar bait. And it worked

by Anonymousreply 381February 8, 2022 4:24 PM

[quote]The only reason Lady Gaga was nominated for the Bafta and not Kristen stewart is because it’s headed by Prince William.

BAFTA didn't nominate Stewart because British audiences were laughing at the trailer for Spencer and thought it was ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 382February 8, 2022 4:24 PM

R382 And they were right.

by Anonymousreply 383February 8, 2022 4:26 PM

It would be nice if the Oscars had an "ensemble" award, like one of the others does. Everyone was equally important in Belfast. I wish Jamie Dornan had been nominated, but it would only have been for Best Supporting, against Ciaran Hinds, and that would've sucked. But he wasn't the lead actor, and his character was no more prominent than anyone else's. If anyone was the star, it was the boy.

I hope Jamie gets another chance ASAP.

by Anonymousreply 384February 8, 2022 4:26 PM

For the youngins who aren't familiar with Tammy Faye, watch just a few minutes of the real life woman and you'll see the challenge Chastain had with the role. Tammy came across like a poorly acted super earnest cartoon character, but it turns out she really was that person IRL. Now imagine you have to portray the "real" Tammy in a movie and it's NOT going to be portraying her as gritty or bitchy or otherwise vastly different than her public persona. Instead you have to convince people that ridiculous persona was the real deal. THAT'S a challenge and that's what I meant upthread about Chastain making a caricature into a real person.

"The ratings are going to be horrible because they didn't nominate more popular movies and actors!"

"There were better movies and actors that should have been nominated!"

So either you think Spider-Man, Shang-Chi, F9 and Venom: Let There Be Carnage were the best movies of 2021. Or you think the actors in Mass would have drawn a larger TV audience.

by Anonymousreply 397February 8, 2022 4:39 PM

Frances McDormand was never in contention so I don’t know why this is even a question. No one ever predicted her being nominated.

by Anonymousreply 398February 8, 2022 4:39 PM

R396 no. Just someone who knows the difference between a George Zimmerman and Brad Pitt

by Anonymousreply 399February 8, 2022 4:40 PM

by Anonymousreply 401February 8, 2022 4:41 PM

Will Smith is winning. He has been the frontrunner since last summer

by Anonymousreply 402February 8, 2022 4:41 PM

Will Smith and Jada along with Kristen Stewart need to go away.

by Anonymousreply 404February 8, 2022 4:44 PM

Italy, Spain, and Portugal are all Latin countries, the reason Latin America is Latin is because they were predominantly colonized by Spain and Portugal. Just as the US is Anglo because we were founded by the British.

R400 I haven't seen "tick, tick, BOOM" But, I'm interested to see it because he is apparently so good in it. As much as I praise Chastain in "The Eyes of Tammy Faye", AG's performance in that film was horrible. So I am intrigued that they are both nominated for Oscars for different films.

The only other time Denzel and Will competed for the same Oscar was in 2002, when Will was nominated for Ali and Denzel won for Training Day. During that ceremony Will and Jada left early, before Best Actor was awarded. There was typical Hollywood speculation/gossip that he left early because knew he wasn't going to win, but they actually left because young Willow had to be taken to the hospital with a fever and ear infection.

This is Will Smith's third Best Actor nomination. For both of his previous nods he lost to another African American actor: in 2002 to Denzel Washington, and in 2007 to Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland.

Andrew Garfield was better in The Eyes of Tammy Faye than he was in tick, tick...BOOM which also happened to be a dreadful movie.

R388, I point you to Renee Zellweger in the Judy biopic for someone who won in a not very good movie with just one performance. Chastain for the win (finally).

by Anonymousreply 420February 8, 2022 5:01 PM

wow Dame Judi is fucking 87?!

by Anonymousreply 421February 8, 2022 5:01 PM

R420 disagree about Garfield being better in Faye. He wasn’t memorable in it, and was more supporting in that than a lead.

by Anonymousreply 422February 8, 2022 5:02 PM

I’m over Judi getting Oscar nods for nothing almost. Same with Streep. Stop nominating them just to nominate them.

by Anonymousreply 423February 8, 2022 5:02 PM

Yes Stewart played Diana as a "character" in Spencer because that was what the movie demanded -- it wasn't really a tedious biopic like Chastain's, with her ridiculous facial prosthetics that I couldn't look at for more than five seconds without gagging (Garfield's were worse but only because she had all that on-the-nose make-up to cover them up) -- Spencer is an abstract art-film about class and suffocating history and Diana is an idea in it, not a mimicry gig

by Anonymousreply 424February 8, 2022 5:03 PM

R401 that plus the oversaturation of awards, both "prestige" and silly. The Oscars used to be the only one that mattered. Now, by the time the Oscars come along you've seen most of the winner win at least one other big award.

R397, the Oscars need to better balance rewarding the great performances while still giving nods to audience favorites. Neither a category filled with noms for movies no one has seen nor one that is filled with crap that managed to attract an audience do much for the industry as a whole. They should aim to include the "best" but there's always room to reward an audience favorite who turned in a strong performance, or a big box office hit that was also well made. But the Academy has its biases and they always show.

by Anonymousreply 425February 8, 2022 5:04 PM

[quote]I point you to Renee Zellweger in the Judy biopic for someone who won in a not very good movie with just one performance.

Also, Julianne Moore for Still Alice is another example. I'm sure there are tons of others.

by Anonymousreply 426February 8, 2022 5:04 PM

R422, I didn't state he was a lead in TEOTF, I said he was better as Jim Bakker. I agree that is a supporting role and he is the lead role in the horrible ttB.

by Anonymousreply 428February 8, 2022 5:07 PM

R424 the abstract-art quality of Spencer is the only interesting thing about the movie. Without that, it's just Stewart giving Diana all the same twitchy-itchy tics she uses in every other role but with an English accent.

by Anonymousreply 429February 8, 2022 5:08 PM

I fell in love with Andrew Garfield in Tick, Tick, BOOM! I've always liked him as an actor, but that performance wowed me permanently. I agree it wasn't a great movie, or a great story, but Andrew was genuinely exciting. I loved getting to hear him sing. I'm going to watch it again soon.

by Anonymousreply 430February 8, 2022 5:10 PM

Why in the world did Disney fail to put we don’t talk about Bruno up for an award?

by Anonymousreply 431February 8, 2022 5:13 PM

Nicole Kidman deserves 2 Oscars after 30 years of exceptional performances. It's just a shame if she gets it for the Lucy movie.

by Anonymousreply 432February 8, 2022 5:14 PM

Renee was in a biopic about one of the industry's most beloved stars. Julianne Moore was going on a long overdue narrative. Chastain has neither, no one checks for her. At best she's a niche actress with a small yet noisy (and delusional) fanbase. She won't win but it'll be amusing to watch her stans insist that she will.

by Anonymousreply 433February 8, 2022 5:14 PM

R431 they chose the song to submit before Bruno got really popular. Plus that big ensemble might be harder to pull off on the night.

by Anonymousreply 434February 8, 2022 5:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 435February 8, 2022 5:16 PM

R427 I disagree because as perfectly as Jessica Chastain captured Tammy Faye, AG did the opposite with Jim Bakker. After watching YouTube videos of the real Jim Bakker from back then AG didn’t seem to capture him at all. JC captured Tammy, and I thought Vincent D'Onofrio captured Jerry Falwell but AG and the Pat Robertson actor missed the mark. I haven’t seen ttb but if it is worse I can’t see why he would receive a nomination.

by Anonymousreply 436February 8, 2022 5:16 PM

Tick tick Boom was great. Better than at least 2 or 3 films that were nominated. Garfield was amazing in it.

by Anonymousreply 437February 8, 2022 5:17 PM

R430 I agree and hope he wins. Certainly more deserving than Will Smith.

by Anonymousreply 438February 8, 2022 5:17 PM

[quote] Kristin Stewart for Best Actress? Stick a fork in the oscars, they’re done.

Yes.

R338 through R343 - and R377 - are definitely Stewart PR plants.

Spencer was atrocious. And Stewart’s acting in it was one of the worst performances ever: full of bizarre tics, whispers and all of Stewart’s bizarre idiosyncrasies we’ve all had to endure.

The majority of viewers are perceptive and can call a spade a spade.

The fact that she’s even nominated speaks volumes. The Oscars are done.

by Anonymousreply 439February 8, 2022 5:17 PM

[quote]D'Onofrio captured Jerry Falwell

Nuh-uh. That was the pinnacle of ridiculousness. Of course, I may have been having sense memory flashbacks to L&O: CI.

I neither loved nor hated Andrew in this movie, but he was the only reason I watched it. There are very few actors I want to spend that much time with. I thought Jessica was fine as Tammy Faye. I liked the movie far more than I expected.

by Anonymousreply 440February 8, 2022 5:20 PM

As long as Jessica “Moron Insincere Virtue Signaler” Chastain doesn’t win, I will be satisfied

Her interview on the podcast “You’re Wrong About” about the Tammy Faye movie turned me off for life.

R439 this so so performance means the Oscars are done? This isnt the first polarizing performance to be nominated or even go on to win. Not saying she deserved a nom but the Stewart haters are out in full force.

by Anonymousreply 442February 8, 2022 5:21 PM

[quote]wow Dame Judi is fucking 87?!

She really was too old to play Jamie Dornan's mother. And please, no "it's Ireland" comments; the family were meant to be protestants.

by Anonymousreply 443February 8, 2022 5:21 PM

I predict Kristen Stewart will have a sour look on her face and not clap for the winner when she loses.

by Anonymousreply 444February 8, 2022 5:22 PM

[quote] Wonder why The French Dispatch didn't get any nominations?

I don't think very many people saw it. It had a very slow and laborious rollout and I think people were confused by that, so it may not have gotten much momentum.

(note: I didn't see it and haven't read the reviews so there's that too. but just commenting on how weird the rollout was, even for covid era.)

by Anonymousreply 445February 8, 2022 5:23 PM

I understand you can play younger or older but based on their ages Dench would have been 48 when Dornans character was born.

by Anonymousreply 446February 8, 2022 5:24 PM

On the subject of great captures, one of my all-time favorites is Richard Paul's too-brief role as Falwell in The People vs. Larry Flynt. That was actually the second time he played him (the first was in a TV movie about Jim and Tammy Faye). I still remember the look on his face when Isaacman is telling the Supreme Court that there's value in public speech that takes down a bloated gasbag like Falwell who preaches hypocrisy with a "beatific smile" on his face.

D'Onofrio's Falwell was not as good.

by Anonymousreply 447February 8, 2022 5:26 PM

R428 Knocking "Rich Little" nominations is the elitist default position. These films are often the only cultural common frame of reference contemporary audiences have when confronted with art house dreck which they or no one they know has ever see. At least most of us remember Princess Di, Tammy Faye and Lucy.

by Anonymousreply 448February 8, 2022 5:26 PM

This year's show will be grand. Poor Glenn being nominated in a lackluster year on a pathetic, low-rated Oscar show and embarrassing herself with that "Da Butt "dance.

by Anonymousreply 449February 8, 2022 5:27 PM

Is Whoopie hosting this year?

by Anonymousreply 450February 8, 2022 5:30 PM

[quote]Also, the Oscars might be able to draw in viewers this year just with their musical performances, if the original song contenders are sung by the original artists. You would have Beyonce, Van Morrison, Billie Ellish, and Reba, all performing, that should lift ratings with a variety of people.

If you think for a second Lin-Manuel Miranda ain't going to worm his away into performing his song, you're nutz.

by Anonymousreply 451February 8, 2022 5:30 PM

R444 it's a weak enough year that she may have a chance. And with Gaga out, she's now the most desperate nominee. All the asskissing she's had to do the past month after SAG ignored her is going to increase exponentially now.

by Anonymousreply 452February 8, 2022 5:31 PM

R443 Even Irish Protestants tend to have large spread out families because most Northern Ireland Protestants are conservative Presbyterians who aren’t big on birth control either.

by Anonymousreply 453February 8, 2022 5:32 PM

Nor is "Whoppi."

by Anonymousreply 455February 8, 2022 5:33 PM

Sadly forgotten is Jennifer Hudson. She was so out of the loop her not getting a nom is not even regarded as a snub. Sad because hers is probably the best of the high-profile performances.

by Anonymousreply 456February 8, 2022 5:35 PM

No it isn't, dear. Jennifer Hudson cannot act and never will be able to act.

by Anonymousreply 457February 8, 2022 5:36 PM

by Anonymousreply 458February 8, 2022 5:37 PM

Arguably this means someday Gaga gets a make good Oscar for an even worse performance. Fucking Oscars.

by Anonymousreply 459February 8, 2022 5:37 PM

Cruz is a truly WTF nominee in Best Actress.

I suppose Kidman will win Critics Choice, SAG and Oscar. No one cares about BAFTA now. Whatever!

by Anonymousreply 460February 8, 2022 5:39 PM

ALSO SHOCKING THAT the boring Chastain got a nomination....her tammy faye was shittty.

indeed, cruz is ridic

by Anonymousreply 461February 8, 2022 5:40 PM

Jessica Chastain has no competition in the Best Actress category. If she doesn't win, you'll hear me swearing from here.

by Anonymousreply 473February 8, 2022 6:04 PM

The idea of Kidman cruising to a second Best Actress Oscar for her miscast Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos is a bummer. I don't dislike her, and think she can be quite good under very specific conditions, but feel she is already over-rewarded when you consider the many superlative screen actresses who have yet to win a single Oscar.

Cruz is strong in Parallel Mothers, and I am happy to see her included here, but the messy screenplay undermines the effectiveness of the performance in the last act. My pick from this field would be Jessica Chastain.

Rebecca Hall often gets a bum deal come awards time. Her performance in Christine was my favorite of that year, but the distributor was too tiny to get her Oscar traction. Now Passing is overlooked entirely, despite Hall's excellent screenplay, direction, and wonderful performances from Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson. Hope she breaks through soon, because she is very talented.

by Anonymousreply 474February 8, 2022 6:06 PM

USA Today doesn't understand what a snub is. Gaga was snubbed. No one was banking on DiCaprio or Hudson getting a nom.

by Anonymousreply 475February 8, 2022 6:09 PM

'specially when their well desherved awards were shtolen by.....a masculine tel-e-vision actress!

[quote]Now Passing is overlooked entirely, despite Hall's excellent screenplay, direction, and wonderful performances from Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson. Hope she breaks through soon, because she is very talented.

There was the misfortune to be 2 films out this year made by acclaimed actresses, daughters of directors, making their directorial debut with eye catching performances from their actresses.

The Lost Daughter got the Oscar noms, Passing didn't. But Passing got the BAFTA noms, not surprising as Hall is British.

by Anonymousreply 477February 8, 2022 6:10 PM

Kate Hudson has a movie out? Is it a sequel to Sia's Riding The Bus With My Daughter?

by Anonymousreply 478February 8, 2022 6:12 PM

Being the Ricardos is one of the biggest loads of shit put out in years. This is how bad the state of cinema is, that the frontrunners for acting awards are two of the most miscast roles of the year (as well as Benedict Cumberbatch, another completely miscast role and dreadful performance).

by Anonymousreply 479February 8, 2022 6:20 PM

Wow. Can't believe Gaga got snubbed. Not because her performance was so great, but because she's been nominated for everything else.

If she's smart, she'll use this to her advantage. Pick her next project very carefully and she might get sympathy vote next time.

I'm thrilled Power of the Dog cleaned up! Best move of the year for me.

by Anonymousreply 483February 8, 2022 6:38 PM

Kristin Stewart nominated for a Academy Award? Maybe the fundies are right - these are the end times! Repent, the end is near!

What an incredibly weak crop of movies!

by Anonymousreply 484February 8, 2022 6:38 PM

Bradley Cooper can come out now, staying in the closet didn't help him get any nominations this year

by Anonymousreply 485February 8, 2022 6:39 PM

Glad Penelope got in for Best Actress!

Judi Dench now ties with Glenn for second most nominations for a living actress.

I really hope Andrew Garfield wins. Benedict is a major suck-up who campaigns his socks off and Will Smith was not as outstanding.

Jesse P really wasn't that amazing in The Power Of The Dog, that was a coat-tail nomination if ever there was one.

by Anonymousreply 486February 8, 2022 6:39 PM

I disagree, Plemons was the heart of that film (if there was one).

Wow, DL was completely wrong with our Actress noms

by Anonymousreply 491February 8, 2022 7:04 PM

Watching Kidman in anything is painful because of her distorted face.

by Anonymousreply 492February 8, 2022 7:07 PM

Plan to get Glenn the Oscar must include her being cast in a movie about the Holocaust

by Anonymousreply 493February 8, 2022 7:08 PM

Jamie Dornan was never on my radar at all. But I am watching him in The Fall which finally came to my local PBS channel and he is very good. He is also gorgeous.

I didn't realize I had seen him in a great film, Anthropoid, about the assassination of SS Gen Reinhard Heydrich, the main architect behind the Final Solution and the Reich's third in command after Hitler and Himmler. Actually, Branaugh played Heydrich in a film about the Wannsee Conference. Anyway, Dornan and Cillian Murphy were really good in Anthropoid.

So because he's so cute and has put in some very good performances, I am sorry he missed his nom. Also, he came out of Belfast himself. His daddy was an ob/gyn.

by Anonymousreply 494February 8, 2022 7:11 PM

Yes, R493. As Josef Mengele.

by Anonymousreply 495February 8, 2022 7:11 PM

Is Training Day one of those macho things where one of the men has to school the other man in the art of being straight? Complete with short bursts of profanity, guns, and long, drawn out conversations held in bars with bad lighting? And is there an informant with a missing eye and a tragic love story or a bad marriage? I can see it all now. At the end, someone dies or drives into the sunset, looking grim.

by Anonymousreply 496February 8, 2022 7:12 PM

Denzel should thank his lucky stars Russell Crowe was such an ass. That's the only reason he won for Training Day.

by Anonymousreply 503February 8, 2022 8:09 PM

Otherwise, I’m not very interested.

Pity neither Annette or Sigorney were able to get their movies out for this weak year, either would have easily won over the nominated five.

Annette stars as the 64yo (lesbian) swimmer trying to swim from Cuba to Florida, co-starring Jodie Foster.

Siggy stars in a dramedy as an alcoholic New England realtor who's life starts to fall apart.

Both scrips made the list of best unproductive scripts several years ago. Meryl was attached to both films ages ago.

by Anonymousreply 522February 8, 2022 9:53 PM

Oh no, Sunset Boulevard has been removed from Glenn's IMDB. I was going to say she would also have had an open field this year if they got this out on time, or if she had another decent role. Alas not.

by Anonymousreply 523February 8, 2022 10:01 PM

R474 I also don't hate Kidman and think she's done some really amazing work (especially in To Die For), but I agree she was totally wrong for the part. Not only is she too old (55, while Lucy was in her early 40s at the time), but she played Lucy as nothing but a humorless, miserable human being.

I'm sure Lucy was driven and hard-nosed, but I have to believe she laughed and had a good time once in a while.

And don't get me started on Bardem's nomination.

by Anonymousreply 524February 8, 2022 10:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 532February 8, 2022 10:29 PM

Sigourney hasn't been nominated in over thirty years, and hasn't even been in the Oscar conversation for at least twenty. I think she should have an Oscar, but I think she's far more likely to get an Honorary Award at this point than a competitive award.

by Anonymousreply 533February 8, 2022 10:34 PM

You dumbasses who keep harping on and laughing at Bradley Cooper not being nominated either can't read or didn't bother to read that he's a nominated producer for Best Picture of 'Nightmare Alley'. Granted, he won't win. But just because you idiots keep saying he wasn't nominated doesn't erase the fact that--gasp--he actually was nominated. Try to learn to read before you comment.

by Anonymousreply 536February 8, 2022 10:43 PM

Meryl not being nominated this year makes this the longest stretch of not being nominated she's had in thirty years! Where she went without a nomination between 91 and 95.

by Anonymousreply 537February 8, 2022 10:45 PM

Meryl has done mainly cameos and small parts since 2017. The only role she could feasibly have been nominated for was "Let Them All Talk" but that was a low-key movie.

by Anonymousreply 538February 8, 2022 10:52 PM

by Anonymousreply 544February 8, 2022 10:55 PM

I totally knew that was what they were aiming for when that movie came out.

by Anonymousreply 545February 8, 2022 10:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 546February 8, 2022 10:57 PM

I hope Simon Rex gets some more good roles. I hope his fictional movie role doesn't become a documentary.

by Anonymousreply 547February 8, 2022 10:57 PM

by Anonymousreply 549February 8, 2022 11:01 PM

R544 Meryl had Buzz for those roles before the movies came out. There was no push for her in spite of excellent reviews of her work in the first two.

Kate Hudson even got nominated for the Globe over Meryl in The Prom. I think Meryl knows that she needed a long break from individual awards attention.

by Anonymousreply 550February 8, 2022 11:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 560February 8, 2022 11:08 PM

The only satisfying thing should Will win, and I pray he doesn’t, is he will always be left wondering if it was because he gave a good performance or because of the political climate we are in. That kind of shit could eat away at him for decades to come.

by Anonymousreply 561February 8, 2022 11:09 PM

Nobody think that except you R571, ya fuckin’ racist piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 562February 8, 2022 11:10 PM

R562 seriously. So sick of them (or him).

by Anonymousreply 563February 8, 2022 11:11 PM

I liked Cumberbatch in Power of the Dog--that he's slightly ill at ease and incongruous as a cowboy is part of what makes the part work. Really glad to see Dunst get the nod. She's done excellent work for years.

I still think Chastain might slip in--Spencer is supposed to be a weird mess. Haven't seen it, but I've seen other supposedly "good" performances by Stewart and they're fine . . . but giving her credit for not being as terrible as she is in Twilight doesn't make her best actress. Similar thing with Gaga. Just because she's not bad for a singer doesn't mean she turned in a great performance. Kidman just doesn't work as Lucy, who had a ton of energy and a rubber face. Cruz is working in Spanish and working in a foreign language is still a bit of an obstacle, though Marion Cotillard overcame it. Colman's already won and the Lost Daughter is a slog to sit through.

I think WIll Smith might get it just so he and Jada will finally shut up, though the British actor contingent might throw their weight behind Cumberbatch.

Drive My Car has got to be the lock for Foreign Language film.

I'm thinking Power of the Dog and Campion for Best Pix//Director. Maybe Kodie-Smith for best supporting (I like Plemons, but that's a nothing part.)

by Anonymousreply 564February 8, 2022 11:12 PM

I swear, the majority of you here are old enough to know this so I don’t know what’s going on. Will Smith is a homophobic piece of shit who took a role of a gay man, based on a real life gay man, and refused to play the role as defined. Did that stop his career, no not at all, he was rewarded with further roles. He is not your friend.

R412 I never underestimate McDormand at the Oscars. She WAS better in French Dispatch than MacBeth, but the woman has four Oscars. Three acting and one producing. The Academy at this point are probably thinking enough already. We’ve rewarded you and your hubby enough.

R460 not really. Cruz won the LA film critics and National Society of film critics lead actress, so she did have traction. She has that slot for a foreign film performance but it’s unlikely it'll translate to a win.

by Anonymousreply 566February 8, 2022 11:19 PM

R565 who cares?

by Anonymousreply 567February 8, 2022 11:23 PM

[quote]I think Meryl knows that she needed a long break from individual awards attention.

As if Meryl had any input into that decision.

by Anonymousreply 568February 8, 2022 11:29 PM

I think Smith (and his wife) are pompous idiots detached from reality, but the #Oscarssowhite campaign has been a pain in the neck for Hollywood, so the Academy may see giving Smith the award as a means to make him go away. My sense is that they actually respect Denzel Washington as an actor, Smith not so much. Smith, however, was a huge star at one point (No. 1 box office), so he thinks he's entitled to the trophy.

Cumberbatch will have the momentum of being in the likely Best Picture, but Hollywood awarded a Brit last year and I think a number of American actors are getting a little fed up with the British take-over of American roles.

by Anonymousreply 569February 8, 2022 11:36 PM

Meryl refused to have the studio campaign her for "Marvin's Room" allowing Diane Keaton the chance instead.

by Anonymousreply 570February 8, 2022 11:37 PM

[quote] I seriously hate this narrative that Jennifer Hudson was snubbed.

I'll bet it's Jada Pinkett making all the noise about it.

by Anonymousreply 571February 9, 2022 12:03 AM

R571 fuck off

by Anonymousreply 572February 9, 2022 12:06 AM

[quote] Sadly forgotten is Jennifer Hudson. She was so out of the loop her not getting a nom is not even regarded as a snub. Sad because hers is probably the best of the high-profile performances.

Agree. I thought Jennifer Hudson's performance was the best thing about "Respect." I havent seen any of the other nominated performances.

by Anonymousreply 573February 9, 2022 12:07 AM

Have these nominations been approved by Jada yet?

by Anonymousreply 574February 9, 2022 12:08 AM

I believe Jessica. Aren't the noms usually announced around Valentine's Day. So maybe a week early this year?

by Anonymousreply 575February 9, 2022 12:08 AM

What if the Academy was to call up Will, Jada and the 2 kids during the ceremony and present them with Honorary Oscars for blackness and social consciousness?

Would they be proud? Throw a fit? Feel they were being patronized? Know they were being trolled?

What say you?

by Anonymousreply 576February 9, 2022 12:10 AM

Oh please. That bitch has been running around campaigning her ass off, telling tall tales about how she grew up poor white trash with no food. She knew when Oscar nominations were being announced. She'll lose votes for being that fucking fake.

by Anonymousreply 577February 9, 2022 12:10 AM

It's not a snub when someone was never a serious contender. Hudson's performance was DOA rewards-wise. It didn't help that Cynthia Erivo had just done the TV movie on Aretha. 'Respect' was also never advertised very well.

by Anonymousreply 578February 9, 2022 12:10 AM

Nothing for Rachel Zegler, lol.

by Anonymousreply 579February 9, 2022 12:12 AM

Don't Look Up looks like it's going to win.

I thought it was the most entertaining movie I've seen in a long time.

I love how energized and enthusiastic these guys are, even more so if you watch it on 1.5 speed as I do most YouTube videos. I can’t figure out their sexuality though, they seem to have a lot of potential to be gay, but they might just have some weird twin thing going on between them where they will never be a close to someone else as they are to each other.

by Anonymousreply 582February 9, 2022 12:17 AM

I loathe how they do Oscar nominations now. That Ross woman is mind numbingly obnoxious and has now done it every year now that I can remember recently which is as thirsty as you can possibly be. Adding the little old effeminate troll today made it a laughing stock. I wish they would go back to the formal announcement with pictures of the nominees and not worry about the childish fake bullshit with these people who have nothing to do with film doing the announcement. It's what's wrong with their whole take on the show. In this day in age only true film fans care about the Oscar. It's not as it once was where everyone watched because it was the only time you could see you favorite movie stars. Now they even use D-List TV trash to make announcements and present awards.

by Anonymousreply 583February 9, 2022 12:20 AM

It's going to be a repeat of 2006 when the star-studded film Crash(Don't Look Up) shockingly won over the languid gay western Brokeback Mountain(The Power of the Dog).

Hysterical Lady Gaga wasn’t nominated. She and her fans can’t function without the validation of awards. It is the only value they see. She certainly isn’t burning up the charts and HOG was a flop. And it was shit. And she was a joke in it. Also, Gen Z doesn’t like her. She is an old, ugly hag to them. She’s Billie Eilish’s annoying great grandma.

Someone said ratings would be low if Lady fucking Gaga was not nominated? *my sides* *can’t breathe* They were going to be super duper low no matter what. Might be a bit higher now that her overhyped, shoved down our throats ugly ass face isn’t nominated.

I guess the wish this would annoy DL Madonna fans came back to bite y’all in the ass. Karma. Madonna would love to have her movie career, but Lady Gaga would kill to have Madonna’s music career. Only one will be remembered as a legend and it is the one with the massive music career.

[quote] AMPAS loves biopics about Hollywood. It's why Kidman will win Actress, why Renee Z. won two years ago.

Actually, I'd say Hollywood loves giving awards to biopics and films about the entertainment business in general, but they don't usually love the ones that reflect back on them. They don't like the lens exposing Hollywood. It is like when All About Eve and Sunset Boulevard competed. All About Eve got most of the love because it wasn't set in Hollywood. I'd say Renee Z, was helped because her performance was concerning Judy's final years on the concert and cabaret stage not back when she was on MGM soundstages. If you look at the list of actresses that have won for playing real women, Renee is basically the only one that was a Hollywood legend, the rest were royals, politicians, entertainers from other fields, or normal people. That is one reason I could see Chastain winning over Kidman. Chastain played Tammy Faye who was well known by Hollywood people, but she wasn't Hollywood so they are less concerned over how she was portrayed. Lucille Ball is still a fucking icon in Hollywood and America. And, I'm sure many older Academy voters probably met her at some point or worked with her, so they will have stronger opinions about Kidman's portrayal. Chastain has also been smart to focus a lot on Tammy Faye's views about gays and AIDS, like with RZ's Judy that could help sway the LGBT academy voters.
