The Queen's 70th Jubilee thread
Tomorrow, or some time tonight, it will be 70 years since she became Queen. Each year she stays at Sandringham, her home in Norfolk, until February 6th, the day she became Queen after her father's death in the night or early morning at Sandringham.
Video from Sandringham today she cut a cake to mark it.
She seems very spry and well.

God bless her, she’s really very alert and oriented at her age, and funny too.

Ah, sorry! Best there. Nice to see it greyed out already. Thanks, Megaloons. It's the fucking Queen - back off, cunts.

She's definitely lost weight, but she must be in reasonably good health to stand and chat to people.

So sick of hearing about this crone and her entire perverted family. She can't join her husband soon enough.

I think it’s very brave of Her Majesty to carry on in the face of her recent loss.
I realize that Harry and Meghan are just a Zoom away, but, still, it must be very hard.
And her husband, as well. Poor thing.

This thread has a better title than the older thread. Easier to understand the subject matter.
Anyway, the Queen is using a walking stick, has lost some weight - but not too much. She still seems a bit sad (I'm guessing due to the death of Prince Phillip). However, I think she's determined to do her best for as long as possible.

Watching the video of her meeting with well wishers looking at the tokens of acknowledgement, and cutting the cake, her expression as I watch her, tells me that yes, she is alert, she is present, and yet, she is also ready to go. Hers will be a happy death. Many may mourn her passing, but she will not regret leaving.

You know. As I think about it, Elizabeth's father George, and sister Margaret were the only family members who didn't live that long. Her Mother and her husband lived real long. So it got me wondering if there were practices and medical treatments they had access to that either were not available for Geoge 6th or that they were unwilling to accept as might have been the case with Margaret.

[quote] if there were practices and medical treatments they had access to
They all (royal family) have access to extraordinary medical care. Look how quickly an obese, McDonald's-eating Trump got better from Covid. He probably had a full blood transfusion.
Margaret probably was ready to die. Sounds like she made some life choices not conducive for the long run.

Was Queen Elizabeth always this chatty and funny with well wishers? Or has she softened with age? When I look at photos of her from the 1970s she looks very rigid and unfriendly.

R16 after isolating with the pandemic, The Queen is grateful for the chance to talk to anyone. I mean. How long can you keep talking to corgis? I think she has always had a great sense of humor, and has always been gracious, but I think it depends both on the occasion and the environment. A chatty, friendly Queen who projects warmth is something that boosts the spirits during difficult days. She knows that. She also feels like the end is in sight, and wants to put things in order so yes, "Queen Camilla" and make sure you all be nice to Charles, OK?"
As Charles begins his reign, you can be sure he will take lots of opportunities to invoke her name. He will wrap her around himself and Camilla like a blanket...when he isn't totting Katherine William, George Charlotte and Louis around with him. The Palace staff has probably been polling like crazy and they have it all mapped out. They don't want to see the monarchy go away. But the Magic will leave with Elizabeth II because her connection to the WW 2 years and an important part of the history of the UK will go with her. The only thing for Charles to do is save the world. If he becomes an effective spokesperson for the Environment that will help his standing.

Margaret smoked and drank herself to death

I believe Margaret felt she had no value, and was forever stuck mentally, at the emotional age of 20 something. I know the Crown is fiction, and I have no idea whether or not anything like this happened, but when she was sent on that very sensitive mission to meet LBJ, and she succeeded in securing the financial stability of the nation, that was certainly a huge deal. I can see her enthusiasm, and actually believe that she had new energy and came home wanting to do more, to help more. And I can see not just Phillip, but that Palace guard being very reluctant to take a chance on her. And not without reason. She was a real wild card. You just never knew what she'd do or say. Her public image was not good. She had a track record, so it wasn't just about them obstructing her. I think she may have suffered from Depression, and was an alcoholic. But yes, she smoked and drank herself to death.

R22, I just saw a British documentary on Margaret and the gist I got was that the US trip was a party trip and cost too much. Never to be repeated. They did say that LBJ was charmed by Margaret.

R26. Yes—The Crown really has polluted everyone’s knowledge of post-war British history. This was the late 60s. Britain was not dependent on foreign aid. The main objections were that it was a pointless waste of money and that she and her entourage had not always behaved properly.

R25 - one of her old dogs (a dorgi named Candy) joined her a couple of days ago in this video. She's the only one left from the last of her corgi/dorgi brood.

Contrary to a couple of comments above, she didn't cut the cut the cake. She announced "I think I'll just stick the knife in it and leave the rest to someone else." And that's what she did to much laughter.

Elizabeth is the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch, the longest-serving female head of state in history, the oldest living and longest-reigning current monarch, and the oldest and longest-serving incumbent head of state.
On 9 September 2015, Elizabeth II became the longest-reigning British monarch and the longest-reigning female monarch in world history. On 23 May 2016, her reign surpassed the claimed reign of James Francis Edward Stuart (the "Old Pretender").
On 13 October 2016, she became the world's longest-reigning current monarch (and the world's longest-serving current head of state) after the death of Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), King of Thailand. On 6 February 2022 (at the age of 95 years, 291 days), she celebrated her platinum jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne, becoming the first British monarch to do so.
If she is still reigning on: * 27 May 2024 (at age 98 years, 36 days), she will be the longest-reigning monarch of any sovereign state, surpassing Louis XIV of France, who reigned for 72 years, 110 days.

I imagine so, r39. Maybe not Windsor to London? She used to make the trip to Sandringham by train, but now with the increased possibility of a medical event, being far from a rail station and hospital isn't advisable.

She is not doing helicopters unless she is ill. She is train and car now. Slower pace. There's security and a Helio following incase of an emergency. I remember reading something to this effect back when Phillip became ill.
