Name this kind of dog

They are sort of like labs but have big black spots and then the rest is grey and white and smaller black spots.

Anyone ;know what I'm talking about?

A Dalmation? (Well, that's what they told me at the pet store.)

by Anonymousreply 1February 5, 2022 4:40 AM

That's a Tasmanian spot dog.

by Anonymousreply 2February 5, 2022 4:40 AM

Pointers.

by Anonymousreply 3February 5, 2022 4:40 AM

Blue heelers?

by Anonymousreply 4February 5, 2022 4:45 AM

So far none of the suggestions look like the dogs I'm talking about.

They'll have huge black spots. Maybe a whole ear is black or the head is mostly black.

by Anonymousreply 11February 5, 2022 5:01 AM

If it's not a pointer or an Australian cattle dog it may be one of my favorite breeds Catahoula Leopard Dog

by Anonymousreply 12February 5, 2022 5:01 AM

is it oneof these linked? a picture may show brown spots but many spotted dogs can be either brown or black

German Shorthaired Pointer is a very handsome dog.

by Anonymousreply 19February 5, 2022 5:54 AM

Is it a rescue dog?

by Anonymousreply 20February 5, 2022 5:56 AM

Dollface thread.

by Anonymousreply 21February 5, 2022 5:58 AM

It’s MISS Peanut, R18, if you’re nasty. And there’s only one official Peanut here.

I really don’t care. Do you?

by Anonymousreply 23February 5, 2022 6:58 AM

Sounds like you're describing a merle coloration. They exist in many breeds but they aren't supposed to in a lot of them

by Anonymousreply 24February 5, 2022 7:07 AM

Like Merle Norman?

r16 is kind of close except for the head.

These dogs weren't that hound like. More Lab looking.

Maybe they were muts. I didn't realize this would be so hard to identify. (They were two dogs in my neighborhood that I played with as a kid. They were such fun and good looking dogs that I always wanted one.)

Thanks for all the ideas though.

by Anonymousreply 26February 5, 2022 7:42 AM

There are merle and brindle labrador retrievers.

OP/R26 Sounds like an English Pointer (probably not a German Shorthaired Pointer as these are generally liver and white). They are Gundogs (like Labs) and are around the same size but with a more athletic build, and have very variable large colour patches/spots with small spots (known as ticking) covering the rest of the white coat, which is just as you have described.

I hate liver

by Anonymousreply 29February 5, 2022 7:56 AM

Wow both r27 and r28 could be right.

I don't remember them being that svelte as the pointer so maybe r27 has it. I remember them being very lab like (at least one of them. The other one had a smaller head!)

Thanks. I'm not sure now. Could be either or some combo.
