Roy Scheider

He was in blockbusters like Jaws and The French Connection then disappeared from the screen. The last time I saw him was in an arc of Law & Order: Criminal Intent that included Rita Moreno.

He's been dead for a number of years. That tends to slow down a film career.

by Anonymousreply 1February 2, 2022 5:10 PM

^ Hahahahahaha

by Anonymousreply 2February 2, 2022 5:20 PM

Don't forget with Meryl in Still of The Night! A career low for all involved!

by Anonymousreply 3February 2, 2022 5:24 PM

Plus "Marathon Man" and "All That Jazz."

And credited with maybe the most iconic movie ad lib ever.

Not a bad life's work compared to most.

by Anonymousreply 4February 2, 2022 5:25 PM

R4, did he ad lib "We're gonna need a bigger boat"?

by Anonymousreply 5February 2, 2022 5:27 PM

Is he still hot, OP?

He had such a lean, tight body that was incredibly sexy. He wasn't classically handsome, but I found the rugged masculinity of his face so attractive.

by Anonymousreply 7February 2, 2022 11:49 PM

R7 YES! It was his manliness that drew me to him. Something about him...

by Anonymousreply 8February 3, 2022 1:12 AM

I wonder why he appeared in that conservative propaganda movie "Listen to Me (1989)?" Did he not read the script? Did he just need the money? Or was Scheider actually conservative himself?

by Anonymousreply 9March 7, 2022 6:23 PM

He was in that Sea Quest/Sea Lab/Whatever TV series in the early 1990s.

by Anonymousreply 10March 7, 2022 6:30 PM

And he played gay in Marathon Man.

by Anonymousreply 11March 7, 2022 6:30 PM

Nick Capra lions s bit like him!

by Anonymousreply 12March 7, 2022 6:43 PM

Nick Capra looks a bit like him is what I meant to say !

by Anonymousreply 13March 7, 2022 6:45 PM

He was creepy/sexy as Jane Fonda's pimp in Klute.

Yes, r5!

Jane Fonda has had a long series of pimps, on and off screen. She kind of misses the life.

by Anonymousreply 16March 8, 2022 6:44 AM

^Wow, old right wing fucks STILL haunt DL. What's next? Trolling George Clooney?

He gives off conservative vibes, but I remember hearing a story about him protesting the Iraq war circa 2003 in a weird, OTT way.

by Anonymousreply 20December 11, 2024 3:59 PM

He was hotter than hell! He was best in “All That Jazz”. He was perfectly cast as Bob Fosse. Richard Dreyfuss turned it down, thank God.

by Anonymousreply 21December 11, 2024 4:08 PM

He was also in Friedkin's Sorcerer. I think he had a more successful career than most. Big fan of his.

by Anonymousreply 22December 11, 2024 4:09 PM

Roy Scheider looks like every other white 30some married man in the late 70's to 1985 who I had sex with in adult bookstores, peepshows, adult theatres in Philly, NYC, Chicago, Baltimore& Wash DC.

by Anonymousreply 23December 11, 2024 4:15 PM

He was very, very good in that Law & Order C.I. story arc. Really good.

by Anonymousreply 24December 11, 2024 4:15 PM

He should have won the Oscar for "All That Jazz" over Dustin Hoffman in "Kramer vs. Kramer."

by Anonymousreply 25December 11, 2024 4:22 PM

Let's not forget the completely forgotten and wholly underrated film of Elmore Leonard's "52 Pick-Up" with Ann-Margret and a startling, magnificent John Glover, directed by John Frankenheimer. Amazing little gem.

by Anonymousreply 26December 11, 2024 4:23 PM

He always seemed sinister and villainous to me. Kinda scary.

by Anonymousreply 27December 11, 2024 4:26 PM

He was great in The Myth of Fingerprints. Plays the patriarch of a family whose kids are all adults now, and he's losing it a bit. Also the flashbacks to the Thanksgiving a few years earlier, he's just so good.

by Anonymousreply 28December 11, 2024 4:31 PM

Phillywhore r23, is that good or bad? LOL

by Anonymousreply 29December 11, 2024 4:34 PM

Why are white me OP so stupid?

by Anonymousreply 30December 11, 2024 4:35 PM

R19 - stinky link.

by Anonymousreply 31December 11, 2024 4:41 PM

R26 When he was dubbing dialogue or something (he wasn’t acting) on 52 Pickup in the mid 80s we shared the hot tub every morning around 7 am for a week at the Sunset Marquis in WeHo. He had The NY Times, I had the LA Times and we’d switch sections as we read. We never talked much but he seemed like a nice guy.

by Anonymousreply 32December 11, 2024 4:46 PM

[quote] He always seemed sinister and villainous to me. Kinda scary.

He's a former boxer, a lot of them give off that same vibe.

by Anonymousreply 33December 11, 2024 4:47 PM

he liked to be tanned. what was that about?

by Anonymousreply 34December 11, 2024 4:56 PM

He was great in 2010, the sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey, taking over the role of Heywood Floyd from William Sylvester.

A much underrated gem.

by Anonymousreply 35December 11, 2024 5:07 PM

So Klute, French Connection, Jaws, Marathon Man, and All That Jazz, for which he should have won best actor. That's a very good run.

by Anonymousreply 36December 11, 2024 5:14 PM

I like Last Embrace but he and Janet Margolin are an odd romantic couple.

by Anonymousreply 37December 11, 2024 5:16 PM

Don’t forget Jaws 2!

by Anonymousreply 38December 11, 2024 5:28 PM

He was crazy tan in Jaws 2. I think I recall reading somewhere that he wasn't happy that he was tied to the sequel and spent a lot of time tanning during the shoot in Florida.

by Anonymousreply 39December 11, 2024 5:40 PM

Never liked his wigs.

by Anonymousreply 40December 11, 2024 7:00 PM

R23 that description got me hard.

by Anonymousreply 41December 11, 2024 7:19 PM

To R29, I don't know!! I was 18 yrs. old& mad at the world.

by Anonymousreply 42December 11, 2024 8:51 PM

he does the DVD commentary on All That Jazz and makes some good comments about Fosse.

by Anonymousreply 43December 11, 2024 8:59 PM

[quote]we shared the hot tub every morning around 7 am for a week at the Sunset Marquis in WeHo.

Any VPL to report?

by Anonymousreply 44December 11, 2024 9:05 PM

He was the shooting star of my teenage fantasy, All That Jizz.

by Anonymousreply 45December 11, 2024 9:07 PM

He was in The French Connection for like 1 minute.

by Anonymousreply 46December 11, 2024 9:14 PM

R46, not quite.

by Anonymousreply 47December 11, 2024 10:42 PM

I know someone who worked on “SeaQuest” with Scheider and described him as a mean-spirited asshold that the cast and crew loathed.

by Anonymousreply 48December 11, 2024 11:12 PM

Asshole, even!

by Anonymousreply 49December 11, 2024 11:13 PM

Loved him on SNL!

by Anonymousreply 50December 11, 2024 11:18 PM

R44 Speedos but nothing out of the ordinary I can recall. He had his own villa near the tub and was there first every day.

We called him “Leather Man” for his skin. The perma-tan looked like a hide.

by Anonymousreply 51December 11, 2024 11:21 PM

I spotted him occasionally at the Unity Center services at Lincoln Center back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 52December 12, 2024 12:47 AM

I’ve not seen All That Jazz, so I have ordered the Criterion Collection version from Amazon. Looking forward to seeing it…
