Cheslie Kryst, 'Extra' correspondent and former Miss USA, dead at 30

The family of Cheslie Kryst have confirmed that the Extra correspondent and former Miss USA has died. She was 30 years old.

"In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Cheslie," Kryst's family said in a statement shared by Extra.

“Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength. She cared, she loved, she laughed and she shined. Cheslie embodied love and served others, whether through her work as an attorney fighting for social justice, as Miss USA and as a host on Extra. But most importantly, as a daughter, sister, friend, mentor and colleague — we know her impact will live on.”

Extra posted its own tribute to Kryst, who had served as a correspondent since 2019, earning two Daytime Emmy nominations.

"Our hearts are broken," a statement posted to the entertainment show's Instagram account read. "Cheslie was not just a vital part of our show, she was a beloved part of our Extra family and touched the entire staff. Our deepest condolences to all her family and friends."

A portrait of Kryst, a former Miss North Carolina who was crowned Miss USA 2019 and went on to compete in that year's Miss Universe pageant, was also posted to her Instagram page on Sunday.

"May this day bring you rest and peace," the caption read.

Today reports that Kryst's death was announced after police say a 30-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene outside a Midtown Manhattan address found. While an investigation is ongoing, police told the news outlet that her death is "believed to be a suicide" and "indicative of a jump from an elevated position."

A graduate of Wake Forest University School of Law, Kryst's Miss USA reign was a historic one, with Miss America Nia Franklin, Miss Teen USA Kaliegh Garris and Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi also being Black women. Ahead of the 2020 pageant, she spoke to Yahoo Life about the significance of the pageant world "highlighting Black voices."

“Pageantry's role in society is to represent where we are and to continue pushing forward so that we have progress," she told Yahoo Life.

“I gained a greater comfort for being more and more candid as time went on, especially because I think there are probably many pageant contestants who believed that they weren't allowed to step into some issues that were polarizing or highly politicized,” the attorney shared of her own experience as Miss USA. “It's like you have your onstage question where they asked you questions about the election, the last few questions about gun violence, last few questions about millennials. And then you get into your reign and then you're afraid to talk about those same issues. And I think as I got more comfortable in my role as Miss USA, I started realizing that it actually was important to continue talking about those important issues and continue advocating in ways that were most helpful to those platforms.”

She also addressed her future post-pageant plans.

“I've loved my experience with Miss Universe,” she said. “I hope to continue in the entertainment industry because it is another industry that needs change, and that has changed, but you know, obviously isn't perfect. And so I'm glad to be a part of that and hopeful that we'll see more and more progress going forward.”

I'm a pageant fan, and this death is pretty shocking to me, particularly because it's likely a suicide.

This girl had everything going for her. Cute, bubbly, successful, and accomplished.

She was an attorney and also had a career on television.

You really never know what's going on with people.

Not only that, but so many people seem to be taking their own lives lately.

Wtf is going on?

by Anonymousreply 1January 31, 2022 7:06 AM

R1, no, you never know.

I've posted before but I had a buddy who killed himself; I still think about him a lot.

I've lost both my parents now and have no one, romantically; I have a solid job and friends. I don't think I'll ever kill myself but I"m afraid of having a bad day and getting out.

Sibs and I aren't close; no one will miss me.

I feel horribly for this woman and her family. I wish she'd asked for help.

by Anonymousreply 2January 31, 2022 7:27 AM

Definitely a suicide, and not speculation.

CBS New York reported on the story.

Damn, she' fell from the 60th floor.

Some pageant fans are wondering if it was foul play, but there's no evidence of it.

Undiagnosed mental illness

by Anonymousreply 7January 31, 2022 8:08 AM

Bad way to go... I've read accounts where guys who jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge and lived relate that they regretted jumping the entire way down.

Why not just put a gun in your mouth? That's quick and (almost) certain.

by Anonymousreply 8January 31, 2022 8:18 AM

Generally speaking, people who get to the point of committing suicide aren't thinking clearly. Someone who jumps may have wanted to get it over with right then and had no other method at hand.

by Anonymousreply 9January 31, 2022 8:24 AM

She jumped from the 29th floor terrace of her building. Remember Letterman throwing watermelons off the roof? Brutal scene to clean up.

by Anonymousreply 10January 31, 2022 8:25 AM

So far, I've read she jumped from the 9th, 29th, and the 60th floors.

by Anonymousreply 11January 31, 2022 8:59 AM

I've only read that it was the 60th floor, R11.

And the linked news reports have also mentioned the 60th floor.

But someone said "she was seen on the 29th floor." Not that she jumped from there.

It seems like she was scouting out where to jump from.

Can you imagine looking down from the 29th floor, then deciding it wasn't high enough, so you had to go the 60th floor?

To me, that suggests she was determined to kill herself.

by Anonymousreply 12January 31, 2022 9:08 AM

[quote]So far, I've read she jumped from the 9th, 29th, and the 60th floors.

This is true. It was the jump from the 60th that finally killed her.

by Anonymousreply 13January 31, 2022 9:20 AM

That she was scouting for a spot makes it more chilling. There was some intense torment. Poor soul.

by Anonymousreply 14January 31, 2022 9:26 AM

At 7am on a Sunday too r14.

by Anonymousreply 15January 31, 2022 9:28 AM

Oh, and I forgot to mention that she lived on the 9th floor of the building.

So she lived on the 9th floor, she was seen on the 29th floor, but she ultimately jumped from the 60th floor.

That's where the confusion came from.

by Anonymousreply 16January 31, 2022 9:28 AM

The building is 60 floors. She jumped from the 29th floor terrace. Not that it matters. She hit concrete. I hope she was high af when she jumped.

by Anonymousreply 17January 31, 2022 9:30 AM

Was the EXTRA thing that she was really a man?

by Anonymousreply 18January 31, 2022 9:40 AM

The fifth floor is good enough. No reason to go higher. People fuck up when they jump from a lower floor wreck their bodies but survive.

I've noticed the GW Bridge now has cages covering the walkways. I haven't heard of anyone surviving a jump from that bridge. It's unconstitutional. Their lives might be really fucked up and there are really no solutions. Nobody has a right to judge.

by Anonymousreply 22January 31, 2022 10:28 AM

She was so beautiful! And even Gail King admired her. I wonder what drove her to it.

Truly a mystery.

by Anonymousreply 23January 31, 2022 10:48 AM

She seems like a high over-achiever, who might have put too much pressure on herself.

To be so accomplished at such a young age doesn't come easy.

by Anonymousreply 24January 31, 2022 2:07 PM

Commercialism killed her. The pressure of having to sell whatever it was she was offering on her social media platforms.

by Anonymousreply 25January 31, 2022 2:15 PM

R18, I had that thought myself.

by Anonymousreply 26January 31, 2022 2:22 PM

I read the Allure interview. She said she worked so hard earlier in life she ended up hospitalized for 8 days. I'm going to assume she had a mental breakdown. She believed she would become invisible in the eyes of society once she got older. Very sad. I feel like people are more emotionally fragile these days. Not sure why.

by Anonymousreply 27January 31, 2022 2:23 PM

R8 I had a friend who killed himself by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. According to witnesses, he drove his car to the middle of the bridge, got out of the car, then took a running leap right over the rails.

Why would she do something like that? People were criticizing her looks? She didn't care in her pageant days, why start 3 years down the line? She had multiple careers, was successful. May è someone pushed her?

by Anonymousreply 31January 31, 2022 8:32 PM

Maybe she just wanted to make a snow angel?

by Anonymousreply 32January 31, 2022 8:49 PM

R32 LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

by Anonymousreply 33January 31, 2022 8:51 PM

Turning 30 seems to be weighing heavily on young people today. My own sons have struggled with it too. I can't imagine young women, especially those competing on her level, would find it easy. The pressure of the fake culture has to be enormous on young people today.

by Anonymousreply 34January 31, 2022 9:15 PM

This is so sad. I am sorry she couldn't envision herself in her 30's and 40's gaining wisdom and authority but still looking great and taking on projects that challenged her - then enjoying the fruits of her labors in her 50's and 60's.

by Anonymousreply 35January 31, 2022 10:26 PM

It's so strange she got caught up worried about losing her looks and seeing that as her only value in society. If that's what this was about.

by Anonymousreply 36January 31, 2022 10:32 PM

R32 Horrible! And yet, hilarious…

by Anonymousreply 39February 1, 2022 12:39 AM

Maybe she had financial troubles? People so rarely present the reality of their lives to the public because they don't want to be seen as weak or having failed in some way.

by Anonymousreply 40February 1, 2022 12:48 AM

R38. Fuck right off, tranny.

by Anonymousreply 41February 1, 2022 12:59 AM

I see a lot of pressure she put on herself to be perfect. The last picture she posted of herself on ig, very strange! Full make up, eyelashes, nails done, perfect lighting, everything; and the message that she knew it was her last day.

We need to change the culture around fashion, self perceptions, peer pressure, how society sees women. It's just crazy to pretend everything has to be perfect ALL THE TIME. It's not healthy and certainly not normal.

by Anonymousreply 42February 1, 2022 1:11 AM

I’ve often heard many times that suicide jumpers die before they hit the ground. I so so so hope this is true. It is a very selfish and cruel and uncaring way to Jill yourself. But people with that level of illness aren’t doing anything rational. They’re truly sick. Bless the poor girl. So very sad.

by Anonymousreply 43February 1, 2022 1:23 AM

I don't think jumping from the 29th floor makes you fall fast enough you become unconscious. In less than 2 seconds it was over for her. Humans fall 200 km/h in a freefall, about 120 mph for you Americans. If you fall head first, you fall even faster.

by Anonymousreply 44February 1, 2022 1:35 AM

R22 that is just exactly the problem, though. Everyone assuming that to be young and physically attractive and have career achievements means you must have an excellent all-around life with a sound and non-fucked-up inner core/purpose/resilience/raison d’être/support system etc.

We cannot know the full context of what private life or past experience this woman endured, or with what or whom she was grappling behind closed doors.

by Anonymousreply 45February 1, 2022 1:51 AM

I live across the street from her building. Sunday morning I pulled up may shades, and she was already in a body bag. Then, I watched for three hours as the cops and medical came and went. I had no idea who or what happened. I thought a vagrant froze. Later, when they said it was a jumper, I thought "Those windows don't open, the jumper had to go to the floor with the balcony (29th floor)." (The buliding has 60 floors, she lived on the 6th floor and jumped from the 29th floor.) I didn't know her, and I had no idea who she was. Seeing her photo's and her dancing and smiling, looking gorgous on "Extra" tonight, I cried my way though the whole half hour. I'm still a lbit shell shocked. As I look out my window today, there are people at that bus stop, and walking by, and they have no idea of the horror that happened yesterday morning.

Just terribly sad Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I've been suicidal in my past, but somehow it lifted and I can barely relate to my former despair. What a tough break.

by Anonymousreply 50February 1, 2022 5:43 AM

When you jump from a great height, it's actually the best way to die because you feel nothing on impact. Instantly killed. The only downside of it is that you leave behind a mess.

by Anonymousreply 51February 1, 2022 11:22 AM

R5 That you won't have to clean up, for a change

by Anonymousreply 52February 1, 2022 11:35 AM

R34/R39 for my recent 30th birthday I literally curved🙃couldn’t face seeing anyone or opening cards over coffee or taking well-wishing phonecalls. so i pulled a bilbo baggins—snuck out my own back door and went hiking in the woods by myself all day. when i got back that evening, turns out my loved ones were offended and took it personally (why?) but i did not care! I was feeling depressed and needed the space so i took it (birthday pass means you can do what you want within legal and moral reason)

by Anonymousreply 53February 1, 2022 11:42 AM

So it worked for you, R51? Good job.

by Anonymousreply 54February 1, 2022 12:25 PM

What you do 6 days a week for +8hrs per day matters. Who you’re surrounded with matters as well.

If you feel like your work is meaningless drudgery, the people in your life don’t know you or aren’t there for you, and/or the environment you’re in is in some significant way dreadful, you’re not in a good place.

by Anonymousreply 55February 1, 2022 12:28 PM

I read one of her interviews and she said she wakes up at 6:45 every day. She was found at 7:15, so she must have woken up, posted a final message on IG, then gone up to the 29th floor and jumped. Creepy.

She also said in another interview that she sees each her accomplishments as just another prize to put on the shelf, and all the time she's wracked with "crushing feelings of insecurity and self-doubt." It's so sad to realize nobody was listening, and to think this smart, beautiful, highly accomplished woman viewed each of her many achievements as if they were just another stuffed toy she won at the carnival.

by Anonymousreply 56February 1, 2022 1:44 PM

Our society today makes people feel like it's never enough. There's always this push for more, more, MORE! Plus, you are now expected to be the best at everything! There is just no peace from this junk.

by Anonymousreply 57February 1, 2022 2:52 PM

R56, In this age of growing up with social media, I'm so glad I'm an "elder".

I was very insecure and withdrawn growing up, but I had a small circle of friends to hang out with and be nerdy with. I didn't have all these perfect bodies, faces and thrilling lives in my face 24/7 to compare myself to.

I do like social media for making contact with people from all over to talk about music, meditation, books, art and food that I would never would have had the opportunity to "meet", but the other side of it, the Kardashian effect, is deadly. I never would have survived as a teen or younger adult.

by Anonymousreply 58February 1, 2022 3:08 PM

She put other people at risk of physical harm and even death at worst and subjected others to severe psychological trauma at the very least. I have friends who have witnessed suicides and they are forever fucked up. This kind of public suicide creates multiple victims.

I feel for her in that she had mental health issues, and I understand that suicide is a desperate act, but for god's sake, don't put others at risk physically or psychological.

by Anonymousreply 59February 1, 2022 3:11 PM

Maybe it was still the need she felt to "go big". Our culture is really fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 60February 1, 2022 3:23 PM

People have always committed suicide, been tortured by growing older and becoming invisible and been failures at what they most wanted to achieve. This is nothing new and I'd hardly blame it on today's culture.

As a homely gay man I've always been invisible so while it's been very painful there was never a chilling point where I stopped receiving phone calls. I never got them to begin with.

by Anonymousreply 61February 1, 2022 3:45 PM

I think I know how you feel, r61.

by Anonymousreply 62February 1, 2022 5:11 PM

R59 then perhaps suicide should be decriminalised, and made easier and safer and more private and dignified for those who really wish to commit?

by Anonymousreply 63February 1, 2022 7:40 PM

R63 Are you really pushing for legalization of euthanasia for those with mental health issues?

by Anonymousreply 64February 1, 2022 8:02 PM

I doubt she woke up and killed herself. I would imagine she was up all night thinking about it.

by Anonymousreply 65February 1, 2022 8:38 PM

When mental health issues have dogged a person for years death can only be a relief. So yes euthanasia should be legalized and people's deaths should be as comfortable and clean as possible. The pain of those left behind is nothing compared to the pain that person is going through. Their selfishness is not the concern of the suicide.

by Anonymousreply 66February 1, 2022 9:08 PM

The only time I ever thought about suicide was when I was 18. Adult life just seemed too hard to endure. But I still enjoyed eating and I decided my mind didn’t have the right to kill my stomach. So that was that.I understand getting depressed at a milestone birthday but not murdering yourself.

by Anonymousreply 67February 1, 2022 9:22 PM

R50, I came to this realization after micro dosing mushroom 🍄. . But I have a lot of empathy and concern for people in the throes of this insidious mind/ soul sucker

by Anonymousreply 68February 1, 2022 11:08 PM

I hate when people say suicide is selfish. If someone chooses to end her life because of immense physical pain from a terminal illness, no one would call her selfish. Why should mental pain and anguish be treated differently?

That said, I do think there's a certain element of anger in public suicides. People who throw themselves off of buildings or jump in front of moving trains want the world to see and know their pain. It kind of reminds me of Christine Chubbock.

by Anonymousreply 72February 2, 2022 3:34 PM

If she jumped head first maybe all that hair would have softened the blow.

by Anonymousreply 73February 2, 2022 3:46 PM

R73 LOOOOOOOOOL

by Anonymousreply 74February 2, 2022 5:23 PM

If I were going to do the deed, I'd go out like Robin Williams or Kate Spade.

Why leave an enormous mess and risk hitting someone on the ground level?

by Anonymousreply 75February 2, 2022 7:34 PM

I would overdose myself with COPIOUS amounts of sedatives

by Anonymousreply 76February 3, 2022 12:30 AM

R76 Gotta be careful with that. Too many sedatives can cause violent, painful convulsions and vomiting and excruciating death.

See Lupe Velez.

by Anonymousreply 77February 3, 2022 12:36 AM

Why do some people jump off a building instead of overdosing or gunshot etc? Is it because they hated their physical bodies so much they wanted it mangled?

by Anonymousreply 78February 3, 2022 12:48 AM

[quote] Why do some people jump off a building instead of overdosing or gunshot etc? Is it because they hated their physical bodies so much they wanted it mangled?

Exactly. They really do hate themselves, that they want to do maximum damage.

I liken it to Heather Chandler in the movie Heathers.

She sucks cock to be popular, and then when it's all done she goes into the bathroom, looks at herself in the mirror, then spits on her reflection.

It's the ultimate self-loathing and self-hatred.
