Today is his 77th birthday. Handsome and hairy in his youth. Heard from a PA, "Tom doesn't do stairs." Then I noticed on "Blue Bloods" he's behind the desk, sitting at the dining table, or standing next to a car. Do we know of any medical condition?

I didn't know 5 of the 8 facts in the linked article.
[bold]2. TOM SELLECK SERVED IN THE MILITARY.[/bold]
Selleck was drafted during the Vietnam War. He joined the California National Guard in 1967 and was placed in the 160th Infantry Regiment, achieving the rank of sergeant and serving until 1973. At the time, Selleck was under contract with Fox. After serving full-time for six months, he returned home in 1969 and found out the studio had fired him. Later, Selleck was used in promotional material for the National Guard and has been a spokesman for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.
[bold]3. TOM SELLECK GOT A BIG BREAK COURTESY OF MAE WEST.[/bold]
Though he would continue to film television commercials throughout the 1970s, Selleck’s first major big-screen role came courtesy of Mae West. The legendary actress hand-picked Selleck to play one of her “studs” in 1970’s Myra Breckinridge. Selleck credited West with helping him get noticed. “Mae was a wonderful woman,” Selleck told The Morning Call in 1997. “I escorted her to a couple of premieres and she did hundreds of interviews where she mentioned me in the same sentence as Cary Grant.”
[bold]8. TOM SELLECK WAS OFFERED THE DAVID HASSELHOFF ROLE ON BAYWATCH.[/bold]
After wrapping up Magnum, P.I., Selleck pursued a film career, including films like 1989’s Her Alibi and 1990’s Quigley Down Under. He was offered a return to television in the form of Baywatch, the NBC series about lifeguards. Selleck passed on the role of Mitch Buchannon, which eventually went to David Hasselhoff. Selleck returned to series television with a recurring guest spot on Friends and the police drama Blue Bloods, which is now in its 10th season.

I wonder what it's like to be a cast/ crew on a show like "Blue Bloods" where the lead is an olddd with age-related/ (not publicized) medical-related... Obstructions. Lots of cbs crime shows for the Ethel-aged viewers have an olddd leading man.
The former CSI (William Petersen), NCIS (Mark Harmon 69, then Gary Cole 65 as the lead now). I personally love old daddies and fit Gary Cole is my favorite. But it must be an impediment on 12 hour long set days everyday.

I remember him on Magnum as affable in addition to being handsome. He'd smile and laugh (kind of a goofy giggle that was endearing because it didn't match his looks). He was pretty charming. But for years now anytime I see a picture of him, he's scowling. What's up with that? Who does his sour grumpiness appeal to?

Actually the line went like this. And it wasn't asked of Tom Selleck's character.
How tall are you when you're off your horse, cowboy?
Um, six feet, seven inches, ma'am.
Well, never mind the six feet, and let's talk about the seven inches.

Rosie acted like an ass by attacking him instead of getting him into a conversation about guns. And Selleck's "defense" was full of inaccurate horseshit, probably because he was an ignoramus, not mean.

by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 16, 2022 1:05 PM |
He’s almost 80. The wheezing isn’t that bad and is mostly at the beginning. And, as R19 points out, a taller, heavier man having knee problems is not unexpected, in a basketball player it’s almost expected.

Hot when young with no mustache. Google a TS picture on a beach, Tight speedos with nice VPL, hairy chest, a big grin on his unmustached youthful handsome face, I think a towel around his neck, he's a super F I N E sexy man in that image. Never cared for him physically in Magnum onward, a bit of a fake. Nowadays, he just looks like the crusty Lorax in Dr. Seuss books... But we all get old, that's life. :-)

Somewhat unrelated to this thread, but I never knew that Mercedes McCambridge was so cold that in 1986 she refused to cooperate with a repayment plan when it was discovered that her son had been committing financial fraud in her name. Because the whole matter was about to go public, her son took a gun and killed his wife, his kids, and himself, leaving a note reminding MM what a cold bitch of a mother she had been.
"Initially you said, 'well, we can work it out' but NO, you refused… You called me a liar, a cheat, a criminal, a bum. You said I have ruined your life… You were never around much when I needed you, so now I and my whole family are dead—so you can have the money… 'Night, Mother."
Someone should start a thread about surprising Hollywood scandals and tragedies.

He suffers from a rectal prolapse, which occurred during the many years of filming Magnum PI.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 16, 2022 2:58 PM |
LOVE LOVE watching old re-runs of Magnum P.I. specifically ONLY the first 2 seasons, where he was CONSTANTLY shown shirtless, swimming in that lagoon, coming out of the water, exercising shirtless, in a robe shirtless and so on.. TOTALLY served up as handsome hunk incarnate which he was!
HOWEVER, then and even now decades later, I always wonder why since it WAS the early 1980's why he never wore a speedo during these scenes? always swim boxer trunks... ONLY 1 TIME did he wear a speedo and that was in the episode where he participants in a ironman triathlon (guest starring the late great marcia wallace) and you see him briefly in a black speedo?...
he was athletic built, did NOT have chicken legs, so I always wonder why he was never in a speedo in all those early episodes? strange to me since he was promoted as such a sex symbol and he was HOT HOT!..

R34, Mercedes McCambridge was an alcoholic who'd start drinking a 9AM for most of her adult life. I'm sure that was a major factor in how good/bad a mother she was.

Why does he work?
I'll never understand celebrities who owe their good fortune to looks plodding on forever as if their public demands it of them.
In a case where someone lost all their money or had an unbelievable offer for a windfall, sure, but people like Ted Fans on, a thin talent at best doing series after series after series.... Why does he do it? Why do people keep offering him projects as if broadcast network TV were still a thing?
Recognizing when one's time has come and gone or is about to do is such a rare thing that it's the rare exception that should be the rule that startles.

by Anonymous | reply 54 | April 16, 2022 5:32 PM |
Actors (at least some of them) still act long after they should retire for the same reasons they got into the business initially - ego and the constant need for validation and recognition. And they usually have managers and agents who keep finding them increasingly questionable gigs since it puts money in their own pockets. You have to admire those actors who know when to step out of the spotlight.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | April 16, 2022 7:00 PM |
Actually Blue Bloods is respectable work. He's pretty good in it although yes, once you notice I, he clearly has mobility issues.
Will Estes who plays Jamie is cute and very private about his personal life. The guy who plays Joe, the new Reagan, had some shirtless scenes recently and has a great body.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | April 16, 2022 7:14 PM |
I bet Selleck would say he keeps agreeing to come back to keep the cast and crew employed. But this season it seems they are slowly leading to an end. I wonder if they might try to have the Chief spot given to his son Jamie and Selleck only showing up at the dinner table bits. (They tape all the season dinner table scenes on the same day.)
by Anonymous | reply 57 | April 16, 2022 9:26 PM |
"They tape all the season dinner table scenes on the same day. "
That would explain his bloat.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | April 17, 2022 4:11 AM |
Network tv shows shoot seven to eight pages of a script per day, that's it.
Dinner table scenes with lots of actors are a total chore as the camera has to be reset enough to get coverage of everyone speaking and their reaction shots, they take quite a long time.
I'd say they might shoot them all back to back, but it would takes a lot longer than one day to shoot a season's worth of them.

by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 17, 2022 8:45 AM |
I don't like watching the meal scenes on TV shows, where you can clearly see that the actors are playing with their food, putting empty fork-fuls of nothing into their mouths and fake chewing. In just about every episode of The Big Bang Theory, they are sharing a meal and fake eating.
If they shoot all of the dinner scenes for this show all at once, that is a lot of fake eating on screen.

by Anonymous | reply 69 | April 17, 2022 2:21 PM |
Especially the women r68. They take a tiny bite of their handheld food (ok, snacking scenes, not dinner scenes), and that's all they bite. It takes you out of the scene as you know all actresses (and actors too) are watching their ounces.
I don't see that the rebooted Magnum with pretty boy Jay Hernandez is cancelled.
