Why is Russia thinking of attacking Ukraine?

I don't know anything about anything unless DL tells me.

by Anonymousreply 57January 24, 2022 10:15 PM

Because they lost the cold war 40 years ago and Vladimir Putin has a tiny dick.

by Anonymousreply 1January 24, 2022 4:00 AM

Because Putin is a completionist.

by Anonymousreply 2January 24, 2022 4:05 AM

It could start WW3

by Anonymousreply 3January 24, 2022 4:05 AM

Russia always attacks the Ukraine.

They feel they have some right to it, just because it is very fertile and grew a lot of wheat.

Then they get kicked out and the whole process starts again.

R4, they did indeed grow a lot of wheat. They were the breadbasket of the Soviet Union. Stalin took all the wheat and starved about 20 million of them. Even saving the leftovers would get you killed or sent to prison.

Unsurprisingly, Ukraine does not trust Russia to have their best interests in mind,

They had nukes and gave them up to NATO in exchange for a promise of protection from Russian aggression after the Soviet collapse. Let's see how promises are kept.

By NATO I obviously mean America it's kind of complicated.

by Anonymousreply 10January 24, 2022 5:09 AM

He's trying to twist the U.S.'s arm to get it in writing they will never admit Ukraine into NATO.

by Anonymousreply 11January 24, 2022 5:15 AM

Russian President Vladimir Putin's objective is to keep Ukraine – the second-largest country on the continent – from making common cause with the democracies of Europe. "What motivates Putin," said Daalder, "is a concern about the independence of Ukraine, a worry that a functioning, successful, prosperous democracy in Ukraine poses a direct threat to his rule, because it will give people in Russia the idea that they, too, could enjoy what Ukraine enjoys, and rise up against his autocratic rule."

The Russians, Ukrainians, and Belorusians consider Kyivan Rus' their historical homeland. With Ukraine leaning westward towards NATO, Putin fears losing a big chunk of "Greater Russia."

I thought it was because he's trying to take over all the former Soviet-era territory that they lost?

He did it in Crimea, and he's been trying to take over Ukraine for some time now.

I'm curious though, why he isn't trying to take over the less powerful former-Soviet territory like Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, etc.

Those places would be easier for Russia to conquer.

R21, Russia lost about 2 million square miles of territory with the breakup of the Soviet Union.

In 1980, The Soviet Union consisted of 8.65 million square miles, and it was the largest country in the world, followed by Canada, China, and the United States.

Today, Russia contains 6.6 million square miles. It's still the largest country in the world, but it lost a lot of prime land and population.

I think the goal is to secure more territory to exploit natural resources, gain access to more ports, and increase its population/workforce.

Out of all the territory that Russia lost, Ukraine is probably the most valuable. Not only that, they share the same heritage as ethnic Russians, which is part of its appeal to Putin. In his mind, Ukrainians ARE Russian, and he wants them back in the fold.

by Anonymousreply 27January 24, 2022 6:19 AM

Because Russia is way stronger than Ukraine, and the Ukrainians are stupid to ally with the west. The west will be abandon them once the bullets start flying, and the current western backed regime will flee just like in Afghanistan.

by Anonymousreply 28January 24, 2022 6:27 AM

How long did it take you to translate that from Russian R28?

by Anonymousreply 29January 24, 2022 6:40 AM

Does Putin think he is immortal? He's fucking old and has more money than he'll ever use. Why does he even care about retaking Ukraine? I'm sticking with the tiny dick hypothesis.

[quote]I'm curious though, why he isn't trying to take over the less powerful former-Soviet territory like Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, etc.

Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia are NATO membership countries. He wouldn't dare attacking those. If Stasi Angela hadn't vetoed Ukraine NATO membership, we wouldn't be in this situation now.

by Anonymousreply 31January 24, 2022 7:16 AM

Until the invasion of Crimea, most Ukrainians opposed joining NATO.

by Anonymousreply 32January 24, 2022 7:21 AM

Germany needs to pick a side already.

by Anonymousreply 33January 24, 2022 7:23 AM

Germany doesn’t want millions of Ukrainian refugees.

by Anonymousreply 34January 24, 2022 7:44 AM

Well then Germany maybe should send some troops and ammo to Ukraine. They behave like some phony peace hippies on the one hand and with the other hand they sell machine parts to Russian companies that make drones used to attack Ukrainian soldiers in Donbas.

I don't know what Germans think of their government being sold to Russian oligarchs. I would be mad as hell. Luckily I don't live there any more.

by Anonymousreply 35January 24, 2022 8:24 AM

Militants in Donbas use Russian drones with German-made engines, reported the German newspaper Tagesschau with reference to the report of the UK-based investigative organization Conflict Armament Research (CAR).

Over a three-year period, CAR studied six different models of Russian military drones and one non-military model used in eastern Ukraine. The drones were captured in the conflict zone. The work was funded by the EU and the Foreign Office in Berlin.

The report says the drones are assembled in Russia, but components such as cameras and engines often come from other countries, including Germany. A reconnaissance drone with the number 2166, which was shot down by the Ukrainian military in February 2017, had a German engine.

CAR experts have found in the drone a single-cylinder 3W-55i engine produced by the German company 3W-Modellmotoren Weinhold GmbH, based in Hanau, Hesse. The company reported that in October 2013 the engine was shipped to the company the World Logistics Group in the Czech Republic. The Czech company did not respond to expert requests.

According to the Commercial Register of the Czech Ministry of Justice, the company was liquidated in 2018. As CAR found out, the three managing directors were Russian citizens, and one of them was associated with the security agencies in Russia. However, this is sufficient to prove that World Logistics Group acted on behalf of Russia, experts say.

According to CAR, tracking the components of Russian UAVs showed that the Russian defense and security agencies  buy  foreign technologies through Russian independent electronics and components dealers.

Possibility of joining NATO is one of the big reasons for the inevitable occupation. Angela was smart to veto and delay the disaster. Ukraine is not comparable to other former Soviet countries. Very complex history going back centuries. Large parts of Ukraine in North, South and East are ethnically Russian as the borders were drawn very arbitrarily by Stalin and others. That was done of course intentionally foreseeing situations like this one.

by Anonymousreply 37January 24, 2022 8:41 AM

Before 2014 nobody was talking about Ukrainian NATO membership. Putin's low self esteem created the crisis all by himself.

- Victor Yushchenko's face scars

by Anonymousreply 38January 24, 2022 9:13 AM

Wrong, r37. Every region of Ukraine but for Donbass was majority ethnically Ukrainian before 2014. People speak surzhik, thanks to a over a half century of Russification policies, but they self identify as Ukrainian.

by Anonymousreply 39January 24, 2022 9:25 AM

R39, it's not about how one self identifies. The point is how it's perceived. At a larger geo political scale, the signs are that if Russia indeed occupies Ukraine, the West would not resist much.

Throughout the history Ukraine has always been perceived as Russia's sphere of influence and changing that is changing that status quo. One can try but don't be surprised by the response you don't want to see from them.

by Anonymousreply 40January 24, 2022 10:31 AM

Hey guise if you're an American in Ukraine it's time to bug out.

Reuters is reporting this and I can't post a news article. But you need to leave now.

by Anonymousreply 41January 24, 2022 11:21 AM

Tactically, I’m not sure if Russia made the right move of stationing troops on the border. Seems to have agitated both sides with nothing gained in the meantime. Now the US is supplying weaponry to the Ukraine which is not what Russia wanted in the first place! Putin, in turn, is thinking of sending Russian weapons to Venezuela.

What a clusterfuck!

by Anonymousreply 42January 24, 2022 11:37 AM

Putin wants to expand Russia. He has said he wants the old Soviet Union back. That means going to war against former Soviet states like Ukraine. It's an easy target because there are some Russians and Putin supporters already in Crimea.

Alternate Trump Universe = January 24, 2022 = President Trump = "America stands ready to help Putin liberate Ukraine and we will be sending American troops in to battle the United Kingdom if they interfere with President Putin and thankfully the majority of the Senate, including Senators Sinema and Manchin are in total agreement"

by Anonymousreply 48January 24, 2022 1:09 PM

r48 would he be backed by Maxine that had retirement investments there yet couldn't afford a decent weave. if trump had won Biden and the VP would still be edging the mostly peaceful protesters on, Hillary would be on another book tour about how she won but those dirty berniebros killed her. The squad would likely gain greater power and we'd see horseshoe theory in action. And it would be more likely Putin would have put all this on the backburners to instead focus on furthering the divides in the U.S. even though he mostly succeeded. the bigger risk would be the tds reaction worldwide - we'd see more hardliners come out in office while street activists would have likely become more deadly. And you are aware the far left isn't any more keen on vaccination mandates than the right? so, we likely wouldn't be any better on that front.. in fact, it might be worse given the amount of window lickers in that crowd. . . and the greater hesitancy to employ force when the media is watching the trainwreck so closely. the polarized sides would likely be even more out of control. whereas now we just have trump fans, because let's face you are, are creaming their pants at all their fantasies of what he might do... forever screaming harder, daddy, harder. y'all need therapy.

This was going to happen with or without Trump.

Better for NATO without Trump.
