Does Qatar Airlines only hire young crew members?
And what do they do when they start to get older? Are they just fired?
I was at SEA-TAC when an "army" of Qatar Airways flight crew surrounded me, on their way to the gate.
Every single one of their flight attendants was young, attractive, and full of make-up. They were also very pleasant and smiling, even while walking through the airport. And their uniforms were really sharp.
As I flew on both American and Delta, it was a stark contrast to the older, less made-up, somewhat dumpy, and undoubtedly grumpy flight attendants on these airlines.
I was quite jealous, to be honest.
Why can't our airlines be like that?

I had the same Qatar experience at a hotel in Boston. The fact that they put them up in a hotel in the city rather than an airport Red Roof Inn tells the story.

Seeing them in person was impressive.
There was a Delta pilot with us on the train to the gates, and he was totally flirting with the females, telling them how sharp they all looked. He honestly couldn't stop staring at them.

Middle East airlines, like many of the Asian airlines, have age and weight limits. They always have a few older male attendants (stewards) on board to deal with drunk and unduly passengers.

Yes, OP. They have pretty strict rules for their employees down to how female flight attendants apply their makeup and even the lipstick color.

R33 Most definitely, all of the Middle Eastern airlines do. Asians, Europeans, Arabs, etc they hire the best. And it really maximizes the travel experience, even in cattle class. Maybe one small factor in the bad behavior incidents on US domestic flights has to do with being greeted by the type of flight attendant they hire. It deflates the mood.
It adds to the aesthetic to have young, attractive, and energetic flight attendants unlike US based airlines who are cowed into hiring sour, dour fraus. You would think there are plenty of foreign girls who’d love to work for American-based carriers. European airlines are a little beneath the standards of the eastern airlines but way ahead of America. I remember Virgin Atlantic and even BA having attractive, sharply dressed attendants not too long ago. I’m with the poster above—I mean, is it really safe to have these older women large and in charge?

I always wonder my safety when I climb onto a domestic plane and see the overweight, sour-looking, loud, bossy flight attendants on board. I have seen them engage in small quarrels with customers over a number of things, the luggage, their speed finding their seat, staying put so we can all leave, etc. On one occasion, I heard one complain loudly about how exhausted she was and how she couldn't wait to get home to sleep, "so y'all better behave on this flight cuz I have no patience hahaha".
It all seemed to change after those flight attendants got killed on 9/11, like they were not going to play nice anymore.

These FAs are basically indentured servants and controlled even outside of work. Besides age and weight limits, they have to share company apartments and are only allowed to travel to their home country once or twice a year. These airlines are also heavily subsidized by their respective countries which allow them to spend more on “soft product” like meals and amenities.
The reason US FAs are not thrilled to serve you is that they have taken concessions since 9/11 while management pay has increased. Starting pay can be as low as 17,000 and you can only achieve a livable wage by sucking it up and sticking it out until you too become middle-aged and resigned.

Exactly, R90.
And the main difference is that Emirates and Qatar Airways actually put that subsidized money INTO THE AIRLINE, rather than putting it into the pockets of the greedy fucking CEOs.

USA air carriers pretty much did same until flight crews unionized, and of course various anti discrimination laws were passed.
Stewardesses (and one presumes stewards, what there was of them back then) were in late teens through early to middle twenties, and were "grounded" by 32 or 35.
Weight and height had to be in proportion, and of course those with great physical beauty and charms (as in figure), were often a top of list.

Above was true pretty much across Western Europe, Canada, South America, Asia, etc. Where ever there were airlines. But there was a method to this maddness.
Prior to deregulation US carriers had to compete on service and other things, this was because federal government set ticket rates. Large majority of air travel prior to deregulation (and good while after) was "the businessman", and of course sex sells. Same as why bars or clubs have attractive bar staff or servers.
No American carrier could get away with something like Pan Am stewardesses in linked clip.

FAs on US legacy airlines may be dumpy but have you seen the average passenger? Fat, trashy, likely to become violent if told to wear a mask or stop boozing. Qatari and Emirati citizens make up the minority of their country’s population, which in both cases are comprised mostly of guest workers. Some, like white-collar Americans/Europeans, get paid a lot and are allowed to come and go as they please and these people, along with Gulf sheiks, are therefore the target demo for Asian/ME airlines. Most other workers. like those from SE Asia, can’t go anywhere because their passports were confiscated or because they don’t get paid enough. If Qatar and Emirates had to cater to the low-rent fatsos that Delta and American have to deal with *and* if there were another resembling fair labor laws in the Gulf then I’m sure they’d drop the stringent appearance requirements.

Most all legacy European airlines (Air France, KLM, Alitalia, British Airways, etc...) were heavily subsidized by state if not outright owned by same. Ditto for Asian carriers like JAL, Qantas. Some started out as private entities and later were nationalized however.
USA airline benefit hugely from indirect or direct subsidies such as federal funds so it isn't as if they are totally on their own. In fact absent few brief periods since deregulation US airlines as whole run at a loss.
US airlines as a whole have been profitable because there are less of them than in past, and that they've managed to wring every single penny they can out of passengers, this while keeping a tight lid on costs.

R114 Cathay is still operationally controlled by the Swire family, but Air China holds about 30 percent and Qatar Airways about 10 percent of the company. Pandemic restrictions have practically destroyed it, though.

I remember that someone here always used to mention Air Malaysia as having excellent service.
Not sure what their FAs look like, though.

R119 R120 Those were bizarre, isolated incidents and let’s not act like countries like the US haven’t ever shot down a passenger plane before. Malaysian Airlines always had great service and attractive flight attendants.

R109 Unfortunately America doesn't care about customer service. That is why they subject passengers to Flight Attendants like those in: R105 R106 and R107

Does anyone have a link to the video referenced at R124?
I remember seeing it when it first came out, and I'd love to watch it again.

R124 "Suspended" is just a fancy way to say he's sooo fired.
Austin should try to get him a part in his next film: "Coffee, Tea or ME?" LOL

FA may or may not have known who Austin Wolfe was, and or also about his habit of recording all his play dates and posting on his FB or other online accounts.
What likely compounded FA's problems were his Delta ID badge clearly seen in video.
