Good for them. Good for them.
Nikka Costa isn't Australian, and she's great.

Nikka Costa isn't Australian, Kate Ceberano is half-Filipino.

Reminds me of when Hedwig started a band on the military base. These wives can’t help being rockers. Good for them!

That doesn't mean she can't be Australian, R6. You know this, yes?

I saw Kate Cebrano perform mid-2021, while eating a great meal at a restaurant overlooking Bondi beach. It was the most spectacular night, just perfect. She’s a true pro.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 16, 2022 7:46 AM |
They’re all professional performers OP, not some drunk randoms who jumped up and started singing.

Kate Ceberano's grandmother was L Ron Hubbard's kids' nanny, Kate was born into Scientology
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 16, 2022 9:42 AM |
Kate Ceberano was a major pop star in the 80s/90s. The other two are also professional singers of some note.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 16, 2022 10:27 AM |
Mahalia Barnes is also half Filipino. Both Kate and Mahalia are great Aussie singers. I have been a fan of Kate's since 1984 and have seen her perform live many times.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 16, 2022 11:02 AM |
Mahalia is half Thai.

They are singing a meaningful classic Australian anthem.

Kate has been around forever, and was one of the backup singers for the band The Models, along with Zan Abeyratne and her twin sister Sherine (who sang lead vocals of the song Breakaway from Bill and Ted).
Kate and Zan had their own groovy band in the 80s called I'm Talking, with hits like Trust Me, Do You Wanna Be? and Holy Word.

That is interesting.
Kate never proselytized about Scientology in public. In fact, I don't think she spoke about it in very glowing terms like some celebs, but was matter-of-fact - "it has always been part of my life".
There was pressure on her in the early 2000s to do more for them, I think when she moved to the US. I have no idea what her relationship with them is like today.
In this interview with the ever tactful Burt, she acknowledges it had changed from her grandparent's day.

I always hated Kate Ceberano for some irrational reason (I think she was just *everywhere* when I was growing up) but i've recently realised she actually has impeccable vocal technique and can sing almost any genre. Both her and Mahalia were good on Masked Singer Australia too.

She is very careful about Scientology. But she did do a benefit for them where she was filmed. Either way, stupendously talented.

One of my favorite songs featuring Nikka Costa.
She's really talented - never figured how she was overlooked while Autotuned skanks made it big.

A grittier, more soulful version of Nothing Compares 2 U from Nikka.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 16, 2022 2:34 PM |
Early Nikka and possibly her most commercial jam. Shades of Roisin Murphy, if Roisin took a tangent into funk.
NIKKA GOT MORE LEGS THAN A BUCKET O CHICKEN!

Ceberano's biggest single was 'Bedroom Eyes' from 1989. And it's probably her best track. She outsold Kylie that year in Australia too. Bedroom Eyes was the biggest-selling single from a homegrown artist in 1989.

What's with the Robert Mapplethorpe tribute at the start of that Kate video at R15? I'm not sure I see the connection between that neon bright video and Mapplethorpe's aesthetic.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 16, 2022 7:39 PM |
I remember the guy from the bedroom eyes video- Gregory- was totally hot. I remember his name because I remember Cebrano in an interview calling out his name and rising her brows at his mention.

Who is this Gregory?

R18 This classic Australian anthem which celebrates taking drugs isn't the greatest of the classic Aussie anthems.
This other greatest classic Aussie anthem is the song of the Anti-Vaxxers.

R39 why? She has some great funk/soul material. Be embarrassed that you care about things like hits.

R40 I don’t care about hits. It’s because she’s uncool (like you, obviously).

R27 - I remember that song being everywhere -- Tommy Hilfiger campaigns, MTV and VH1, radio, in stores... that was a statement video, too. You can tell Virgin thought they were launching a new star with that video. Didn't quite work out that way for them or for Nikka, unfortunately. Though, if Wikipedia's to be believed, she sold 1/4 million of the album in the US. Not bad.

The person who sang the original song back in the 60s was a South African migrant who escaped the traumatic 1950s Mau Mau Uprising in which thousands died

Kate was cast as Mary Magdalene in the Australian 90s revival of Jesus Christ Superstar, and her vocals were impeccable. She looks gorgeous in the video too. In this version, John Farnham was Jesus and Jon Stevens Judas.
Marcia Hines, cousin of former US Secretary of State Colin Powell played Mary in the original Aussie 70s production.
