I’m Sick of These Goddamned British Actors Faking Our Accents and Taking Our Roles
by Anonymous | reply 89 | May 4, 2022 2:37 AM |
In general, British actors are better actors. They take the craft more seriously and are far better trained. Plus, they’re willing to do anything: TV, stage, and film. Deal with it OP!

The cable western "Yellowstone" uses British actors most notably Kelly Reilly - she does a great job.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 9, 2022 11:32 PM |
Brits and Aussies are known to work cheaply.
They also give better blowjobs to the casting agents, directors, and studio heads.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 9, 2022 11:33 PM |
I'm surprised more African American actors haven't complained about all the black Brits coming here and stealing their roles.

Just as soon as Goop and Emma Stone quit trying to be British.

British actors on British tv do terrible American accents. Simply the worst.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 9, 2022 11:38 PM |
The Aussies seem best at faking an American accent. And actually, the Welsh guy from The Americans was excellent, even though he could have gotten away with a little issue because he was playing a Russian playing an American.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 9, 2022 11:41 PM |
British actors actually train to act. They go to acting school and then they do repertory theatre to polish their chops. American actors are inevitably people who were told they were attractive in high school and head to Hollywood to be movie stars.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 9, 2022 11:41 PM |
R15 You are correct. Acting has as much to do with the voice as the body. American actors aren't taught voice.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 9, 2022 11:47 PM |
They are ACTORS, most of the american actors are just trying so hard to be celebrities.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 9, 2022 11:59 PM |
OP many people are getting sick of it and starting to rightly blame liberals, because they are the ones in charge of Hollywood. Other countries protect their homegrown talent. Hollywood used to, but since swinging far-left within the past 15 years or so, they feel the need to seek out foreigners to play... Americans. It's ridiculous! It really gives credence to the belief that Hollywood (i.e., Democrats) is un-American.
For some reason, the left has a fascination with Brits/Europeans. It is very evident on DL and the way the Oscars go gaga over them. In fact, the more extreme one is to the left, the more anti-America but pro-UK/Europe they are. We moderates think it's silly, for the most part, but are getting annoyed that they are not protecting our own homegrown talent. I know some moderates who are already backing Republicans/conservatives over this issue, so the OP is not overreacting.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 10, 2022 12:18 AM |
But Yellowstone is apparently crawling with Brits pretending to be cowboys, R20. And conservatives love that show. How do you explain that?

[quote]The Aussies seem best at faking an American accent.
I've heard some disasters, actually. One example that comes to mind is Phoebe Tonkin. Her Aussie accent slips constantly. Especially when she yells.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 10, 2022 12:29 AM |
Christ, I can't decide which one is worse between both of these clips. They're the first scenes I thought about because I remember thinking how bad her Aussie accent was slipping in both. It seems to happen more when she does scenes with British actors.

Exactly r15!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 10, 2022 12:55 AM |
R6 The only one who gets shit is Cynthia Erivo because she’s mocked Black Americans in the past.
But yeah it’s kind of odd a lot of historical black TV and movies today are being played by Black British people.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 10, 2022 1:09 AM |
Yellowstone only has one non-American or Canadian in the cast - Kelly Reilly.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 10, 2022 1:21 AM |
Samuel L. Jackson complained about this in regards to Black British actors and the guy from Star Wars told him to shut up.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 10, 2022 1:21 AM |
I thought British men are considered attractive because of their sexy accents. And the British think they are more American than Americans themselves, so who can blame them for trying for parts in Hollywood. If they speak in an American accent, I can never tell if they are British or American because they are just as white.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 10, 2022 1:22 AM |
What acting school did Henry Cavill, Charlie Hunman, and Cara Delevinge attend again?
I think the truth is that casting directors are bowled over by any kind of non-American anglo accent and add them to the cast to make their picture or TV show seem more international. Yet we always here the same point as in R1 that British actors are just so supremely talented, they just have to be cast. Harvey Weinstein, who adored British actors, said the same thing.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 10, 2022 1:33 AM |
Not just from the UK, but Australia and NZ too. The bulk of them are ambitious but seemingly more interested in what they can bring to the table as actors. US actors are all about 'what can you do for ME' first, before anything is signed.

Most American actors can not do a regional southern accent correctly. And why can’t Brits be cast as cowboys? What American actors are real life cowboys? Should only people with cancer portray cancer patients? Should only real murderers play serial killers? Should only straight people play straight roles?

I have heard some American actors doing terrible ‘British’ accents, usually a faux upper crust English one but a range of just terrible attempts. Worst of all time of course is Dick Van Dyke (who I love) but it’s not one way traffic.

[quote] Hugh Laurie
Nope. They often do great accents, but not Laurie. I actually just watched the HBO movie version of Barbarians at the Gate and Jonathan Price played Henry Kravis (for some reason) and his American accent was dreadful.
British actors are trained but it typically makes them very mannered actors. (Cate Blanchett, anyone?)
Hollywood uses them because they’re cheap, and because it can cherry-pick the best of them. Margot Robbie (Australian but you’re all the same to us) is a first rate actress and she’s gorgeous. Why the fuck would she want to work in … Australia? Same goes for the UK actors — why play in the backyard when you can play in the park.
So I would have no problem with this if the Brits reciprocated but as usual it’s one set of rules at home, another abroad.

[quote]The Aussies and Brits do brilliant American accents
Aussies sure don't. They go to extraordinary, but useless, verbal lengths to avoid the flattened vowels, especially a, usually by chopping off the end of the word. It's annoyingly noticeable. Toni Collette is the worse offender.
Brits are just as bad. The vowels give them away every time. Also pronunciation and cadence.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | January 11, 2022 2:33 PM |
Be fair r57. They are usually just as bad as the Americans are at British accents, but we don’t hire those.
I’m watching Poirot now and they use British actors to play Americans (because they unfairly refuse to reciprocate and are as protectionist as OP wants the us business to be). Their accents suck. You can tell in a second they’re stumbling their way through a fake accent.
Guy Pearce has a flawless accent. So does Matthew Rhys.

by Anonymous | reply 65 | January 11, 2022 5:11 PM |
You know who could never get the American right? Larry! His accent sucks in what otherwise is a wonderful performance in Carrie. Old Hollywood movies had it right. They let British actors play upscale, rich, educated Americans with their real accents, or toned down posh accents that became mid-Altantic. Audiences felt those kinds of upper-crust Americans spoke like Brits anyway. Hear Claude Rains in Mr. Smith Goes To Washington. Leo G. Carrol in North by Northwest....oh, there are countless others.

Agree that Brits do terrible American accents. Yes, they capture the pronunciation, but it's over-enunciated and lingering on every single consonant, etc.
Australians do better, more casual and more realistic conversationally.
I've watched LA Confidential maybe 10 times and never even knew Guy Pearce was not American. Russell Crowe does a good job as well.

R34 tbf I prefer Hunnam’s native accent (the one he audibly had in QUEER AS FOLK) to whatever mangled pretentious ugly one he’s adopted now to have his Stateside career. He sounds ridiculous trying to neutralise his Northern roots.
But then, the Geordie & Mackem accents are my weakness....

Nativism in The US is stupid because this country was built for immigration and would not have become a superpower without the contributions of immigrants.

by Anonymous | reply 80 | January 14, 2022 10:13 PM |
R80 Maybe not found it but New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles were all hubs for immigrants. Acting would provide an opportunity for many who would not get accepted into other industries. Film was a new technology and many immigrants especially those who suffered discrimination could find their own niche in this burgeoning industry. Many early actors were from Vaudeville which had a lot of Jewish, Irish, German and Black performers.

I'm a Brit and I can always tell when a British or Aussie actor's accent slips, even slightly, it takes me right out of the story, I immediately feel like I'm watching a tipsy relative put on an American accent - sometimes they speak in this really flat monotone to try and stop that from happening, but that just makes the slip more apparent - and Hollywood definitely have a particular obsession with casting black British actors in AA roles, it is insulting in my opinion, and just plain bad casting.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | January 14, 2022 10:19 PM |
I think Hollywood studios are just lazy with casting. They could go to local playhouses across the country and scout actors from there. I really respect directors who insist on casting unknowns instead of caving to execs who want big names. There's no shortage of talent but it's just Hollywood execs are greedy and play it safe.

It’s generally a good idea to ‘cave in’ to the people who pay the bills for your production.
[quote] Why go to 'playhouses around the country' when you can find actors who graduated from RADA, Central School, etc.?
Correct! Tom Hiddleston wasn’t a ‘big name’ when they hired him to play Loki in Thor, he was just the best choice, as the British actors usually are. That’s how they got to BE the ‘big names,’ rather than someone who started off as an underwear model (not that that’s not a fine and noble profession!).

Business people do not appreciate art and prioritize short-term profit. That's why some directors prefer to go independent and fund their own projects. Finding a distributor is hard though.
