Only a few true icons of classic TV left

Carol Burnett is the last superstar left.

We also still have Dick van Dyke and Bob Newhart.

And then......? I can't think of anyone else.

Knowing the casts of both MTM and Golden Girls are all gone just really puts the most final exclamation point on my childhood, and an entire era.

I'm still here b******!

by Anonymousreply 1January 1, 2022 12:26 AM

I agree, OP. For some reason this year's holiday season has made me feel especially ancient. Betty's passing only exacerbates that feeling.

We still have a few:

Burt Bacharach, 93.

Estelle Harris, 93.

William Daniels, 94.

Lisa Lu, 94.

Tony Bennett, 95.

Tim Matheson was on The Virginian and Bonanza and he's still with us.

Don Quine from Peyton Place is still around. So is Mouseketeer Roberta Shore.

Clu Gulagher was a guest star on basically everything and he just turned 93 a few weeks ago.

by Anonymousreply 43January 1, 2022 7:23 PM

Even though he's not old, I think Ron Howard is a valid entry to submit for this list. The man has two classic TV roles on his resume.

by Anonymousreply 44January 1, 2022 7:29 PM

by Anonymousreply 50January 1, 2022 7:41 PM

He said Erin Murphy, r48, not Erin Moran.

by Anonymousreply 51January 1, 2022 7:44 PM

A lot of the people mentioned on this thread are not "icons." They were on tv shows from long ago but were not icons. There's nothing "iconic" about the "Brady kids" for instance.

Clint Eastwood is NOT an "icon" of "classic tv!" He's a movie star, one of the biggest there ever was. Nobody considers him a "tv icon."

by Anonymousreply 52January 1, 2022 9:48 PM

Let's not forget our G. Damages was highly praised for being on television.

by Anonymousreply 57January 2, 2022 1:02 AM

June Lockhart started working in the 1930s. She was an MGM studio ingénue.

THAT is a career, plus she was Lassie's fur mom.

by Anonymousreply 58January 2, 2022 1:26 AM

Did you actually leave me out of your list as a true icon of classic TV just because I'm fat? Huge? Bloblike? Disgustingly transforming into a termite queen?

Do you know how hurtful that is? Like I don't know how hideous I am?

by Anonymousreply 64January 2, 2022 4:27 PM

Dick Van Dyke was a bigger star in his prime than Burnett ever was, OP.

by Anonymousreply 65January 2, 2022 5:25 PM

R52 I would disagree. The Brady Bunch has become iconic. When your show is still being aired, 50 years after it debuted, your reunion episode is considered a holiday classic, and the rights holders are still pumping out new content and merchandise you qualify for iconic status. They became and have remained America’s family. I would classify the surviving casts of The Waltons and Little House similarly but they aren’t as iconic as the Bradys.

by Anonymousreply 66January 2, 2022 5:53 PM

R66 as a group but not individually. Maureen McCormick is never going to get a Kennedy Center honor.

by Anonymousreply 67January 2, 2022 7:35 PM

Tina Louise is still alive, sort of.

by Anonymousreply 68January 2, 2022 8:44 PM
