“Alfie” (2004) starring Jude Law

I remember when this film came out but never got around to watching it, so I decided to watch it today as I scrolled through Paramount+ because this was peak Jude Law hotness, and I used to love him, but what the fuck is this movie even about!? It’s a British man who lives in NYC who fucks every attractive woman he comes in contact with?

Sienna Miller just showed up and she looks tremendous in this. Was she a model around this time?

This movie makes no sense to me. It’s literally him talking to the camera and running around NYC hooking up with beautiful women, from Marisa Tomei to Nia Long to Sienna Miller.

Now Susan Sarandon is here… wtf.

This movie sucked. The original Alfie at least had that 60s charm and Shelley Winters. And I know a lot of DLers don't like him, but I'm a Michael Caine fan. He's fun to watch.

Michael Caine is great in old age at playing the same character over and over again r1. But he wasn’t desirable to hot while younger.

Didn't DL Fave Aunt Dionne sing the original Alfie theme song?

by Anonymousreply 3December 28, 2021 8:04 PM

The remake was mediocre. Jude Law was unmemorable. Which is sad, because he’s good in other roles .

The film loses its charm somehow when the lead is a genuinely hot guy, instead of a decent-looking guy with a lot of charisma.

R2 Eh, I'd totally have done him when he was young. He had that Mod swagger going on mixed with a dorky cute look. I like imperfect looking men in general though, so I'm a minority on the DL. Jude Law actually does less for me despite being better looking.

"what the fuck is this movie even about!?"

What's it all about, Alfie?

by Anonymousreply 7December 28, 2021 8:16 PM

Jude is gorgeous, but yes, Michael Caine definitely had more charm and swagger.

It was a huge box office flop.

[quote] And I know a lot of DLers don't like him,

I loathe Morris Micklewhite.

Insolent, ugly voice, pudgy, hairless body.

Thuggish in that he can't be be bothered to put an iota of expression into his ugly broad monotonous voice.

His speech is as ugly as this much fitter porn performer

There was a 1975 sequel to Alfie also.

by Anonymousreply 11December 28, 2021 8:42 PM

R6 I'm guessing that you liked the Mod swagger more than the Mickelwhite.

The Mod swagger meant money back in the mid-1960s. Stanley Donen abandoned Hollywood so he could cash in on some of that Mod swagger.

R3. Cher sang it in the final credits, so I assume she originated it, but Warwick’s recording made it a hit (I prefer Cher’s). Didn’t Cilla Black record it around the same time?

Remember when you say an actor's performance is shit. It's not necessarily the fault of the actor. The director will make them do take after take after take until the actor gives the director what the director wants. And that's what you see in the final edit. Not necessarily what the actor wants to portray.

by Anonymousreply 14December 29, 2021 12:35 AM

R14 true but false. Sometimes that’s all the director can get out of the actor.

by Anonymousreply 15December 29, 2021 12:39 AM

R14. True, but true.

People who appear in movies are just flam-flam. It's the directors and editors who do all the work.

Here's the old geezer Morris Micklewhite acknowledging he was clueless in the 60s and 70s and 80s.

That’s not true though. But great job of replying to yourself.
