Pro Skateboarder Brooklinn Khoury Loses Upper Lip in Pit Bull Attack

Holy crap, what a terrible story.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 28, 2021 3:57 PM |
Interesting that the story posted doesn't seem to mention what happened to the dog after it disfigured her. Pitt bulls should be outlawed. This was a fully socialized, 8 year old family dog that she had known for years. It seemed to have attacked out of nowhere. Or was it merely playing with her?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 28, 2021 4:01 PM |
The details of her account of what she was thinking and doing and going through during the attack are unforgettable and so disturbing. The way she was trapped, going wherever the dog led her because it wouldn't let go of her face. Then, suddenly feeling the "release" and seeing a part of her face flung on the wall and hitting the floor. Horrifying.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 28, 2021 4:03 PM |
I’ve been in several debates about pit bulls and their owners. They scare the shit out of me. Not safe to be around.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 28, 2021 4:06 PM |
I’m tired of everyone today claiming they’re a “model”.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 28, 2021 4:07 PM |
She'll always have the broadest smile now, at least.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 28, 2021 4:11 PM |
The is sickening. The scary thing is the dog was likely not even attempting to harm her but was just over excited and playing with her. Now, her life will never be the same.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 28, 2021 4:16 PM |
Pitt bulls should be outlawed. There is no safe Pitt Bull.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 28, 2021 4:16 PM |
Horrific.
I volunteer in a dog shelter and I don't trust Pits.
Rottis, yes, Shepherds, yes, but not Pits. They're unpredictable and when they fight it's to kill.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 28, 2021 5:21 PM |
This is no big deal.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 28, 2021 5:45 PM |
I'm glad she's been able to maintain a stiff upper lip and be optimistic about this.

Which reminds me...who here has seen The Man Who Laughs?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 28, 2021 6:08 PM |
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. I’ve owned German Shepherds all my life, but pit bulls scare the living hell out of me, and I agree that they should be banned.
You can always blame the owners in bite incidents, but at the same time, these dogs should simply not exist.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 28, 2021 6:12 PM |
Maybe the pit bull was triggered when he saw the spelling of her name.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 28, 2021 6:15 PM |
As horrible as this is, I have to believe that with today's plastic surgery miracles (looking at you Kartrashians) they will be able to fix her up.

[quote] She saw a pink lump on the floor, and — realizing it was her lip due to the presence of the zit she'd just cropped from her photo — she wrapped it in a napkin and rode with her cousin to the emergency room.

by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 28, 2021 7:48 PM |
I wonder why the dog attacked her? What triggered it? She had known if for years, and she says she was just about to pet it and telling it that it was a good dog. What the hell happened? Does anyone have any insight into Pitts to explain this situation? Is it common?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 28, 2021 10:04 PM |
Also, she said it just jumped up from the floor and grabbed onto her lip and started dragging her around by the face. Why?

by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 28, 2021 10:27 PM |
The detail of the zit is really standing out in this story is a freaky way. Was it the zit that motivated the dog to attack?

by Anonymous | reply 32 | December 28, 2021 11:16 PM |
This story put me off of pit bulls, 100%.
My first experience being around a pit bull was positive. It was a long time ago, when people didn't really own pit bulls like how they do now. Anyway, it was a friend's dog and was totally sweet and gentle.
More recently, a friend began getting pit bull-mix dogs. One of them escaped the yard and bit a neighbor. Friend's husband got criminally charged for the dog bite. The dog situation was one of the reasons I decided to end the friendship.

A few years back, my second-cousin’s elderly Mom got mauled in the face by a longtime family-pet pitbull bitch out of nowhere, in a similar sort of attack. Mom was just lying in the living room watching tv, dog on the floor by her, same as every other night for years. Mom put her hand down to pet pitty on the head, and promptly gets dragged off the couch by teeth now impaled in her hand and onto the floor, where the same teeth go for her face. Had to get surgeries, and of course the animal was put to sleep.
The bitch was ‘domesticated’ (as much we this breed can be), spayed and old, so my thoughts have always been that it could be some type of canine dementia that prompted the attack. Guess we’ll never know.
Meanwhile, I can firmly ‘squishy-face’ or roll around with my Labrador pup all day, and he won’t do anything but try to lick and nuzzle me.

If any of you bitches watched dance moms - her saint of a girlfriend is Chloe Lukasiak - the sweet little blonde girl who Abby Lee Miller tortured until she quit the show.
Doesn’t seem like Chloe’s bitch of a dance mom is thrilled by this union.

My experience is most people who seek out pitbulls as pets tend to be trashy, violent or into crime. Same with those who get rottweilers and dobermans. Not saying all but most from my observation. These types are guard dogs that were bred for that specific purpose to aggressive and territorial. I do feel ownership of these breeds should be more regulated and restricted. But you can't convince dog lovers of anything. I don't even try to talk to them.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 29, 2021 5:07 AM |
Don't they usually do reconstructive surgery as soon as possible after disfigurement? Otherwise the wound will scar over and then it'll be harder to bond new flesh to it. They could take skin from the, um, crotch area and create a passable lip.

by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 29, 2021 6:17 AM |
this reminds me of an old movie i watched. This lady was in an accident and lost her lips. She was a nurse so after she recovered she often wore a mask at work. Her husband was a real asshole and left her because of her disfigurement. Finally she met a plastic surgeon the part was played by Armand Assante. He took skin from her vagina area and made new (face) lips for her. They eventually fell in love and got married. I believe it's a true story.

Entire face transplants are possible now, so it's probably possible to find a donated lip from a corpse and transplant that, too.

We adopted, unknowingly, a pit mix almost two years ago. She has long legs and can run like a horse and really is built like a bird dog not a pit. We had her DNA done and she is almost 60% pit and a mix of huntingbird types. We can't unlove her at this point. She's staying. I have repeatedly taken her food away to see what happens , she just looks at you like why did you do that. The two little dogs often take her food away from her bowl, she lets them and doesn't do anything, she just looks hurt. The cat actually seems to like her and has slept with her.
Often times, you find out later that these dogs who were so "sweet" had food agression issues, they were not actually sweeties after all. Try taking the food away from your dog and see what happens.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 29, 2021 3:59 PM |
Well, interesting about the food aggression point. The attack did take place in the kitchen, according to the link at OP. I wonder what causes food aggression in dogs? It is genetic in certain breeds or learned?
by Anonymous | reply 49 | December 29, 2021 4:07 PM |
I remember that movie, r44. Armand was a pretty decent consolation prize.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 29, 2021 4:09 PM |
R49 food guarding is innate in most dogs to some extent I would think, but they should always let you take their food away without ANY agression. I think taking food away is one of the main ways to see how adoptable the dog is when rehoming, but don't quote me on that.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 29, 2021 4:22 PM |
Irresponsible people who have bred aggression into Pitbull lines are to blame. All Pitbulls get a bad name as a result, which is unfair. I’ve met some who are the sweetest dogs you could imagine. To be safe, get a Staffie. They are very loving and just want to please you.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 29, 2021 4:31 PM |
Staff's still aren't completely safe - growing up a close family friend had one for a while, and the dog's jaw would often clampdown onto a bit of someone's clothing (if they were lucky) while playing, often with a child, and wouldn't let go even when the child got distressed - you liked the dog but you also got a bit anxious whenever you were around it, because you knew it was only a matter of time before another stand off.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 29, 2021 5:33 PM |
Sounds like they thought that this one was gentle too. Until he tried to rip her face off. Even if they have a good temperament, there's something off about them, somewhere, somehow. Whatever it is, it will take a few generations to breed this instability out of them. Until then, they should be banned.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | December 30, 2021 6:38 PM |
r44, the exact same thing happens on a Nip/Tuck episode (woman loses lips due to cancer, I believe, and she's afraid of losing her husband and the docs do the vagina tissue as lips procedure, and you can see the women getting a bit of a kick out of her husband kissing her on the new lips).
by Anonymous | reply 55 | December 30, 2021 7:18 PM |
People who own pit bulls are fucking idiots. 71% of dog fatalities were caused by pit bulls between 2011 and 2017
by Anonymous | reply 56 | December 30, 2021 7:35 PM |
I had a beagle (had been a stray dog, grown-up adult when we got him). Food aggression. I always chalked it up to his former "life on the streets." Eat or be eaten, etc.

by Anonymous | reply 58 | December 30, 2021 7:45 PM |
R56 it's not that crazy when you consider size and their locking jaw (which is why they end up doing so much damage if they bite -- they physically can not let go until the muscles relax. Hence their ability to hang from something dangling.)
Obviously fatalities aren't going to be from Chihuahuas, even if every one attacked tomorrow. It's not just that though, it's their population numbers. Other dogs have the same ability to lock up, but aren't everywhere like pits are now. Their population exploded in the past 2 decades. When rotties and dobs were trendy (90s), they led the stats for altercations as well.
There's another issue too -- that population boom ties into genetic defects (inbreeding), which can include aggression. Backyard breeding contributes. There's no one watching for that problem. This also ties into a 4th issue from careless breeding: taking away puppies before 9/10 wks. Pets that are too young end up with issues because they didn't learn proper behaviors from peers. For example; better to learn while little, with sis or bro, that actions can hurts, than down the road when full size with a human.

Thanks, R58. That's a really low-quality, heavily-filtered "after" photo (comes from Khoury's Instagram). Doesn't give you a realistic idea of what was done, how it healed, are there scars, etc. Of course, it's better than before. However, it seems like she's back to her old shenanigans of filtering, cropping out pimples, etc.
If she had been in a hetero relationship, I think a man would have left her after the dog attack.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | December 30, 2021 7:52 PM |
The girlfriend got with her AFTER the accident.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 30, 2021 7:55 PM |
The article at OP says that Khoury and the GF got together shortly before the dog attack.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 30, 2021 7:57 PM |
And don't think I'm not saying pits can't be problems. Clearly they're involved in too many fatalities/ attacks to ignore. There's just that many now though. Every shelter seems to be full of pits and pit mixes now. I'm not sure why that breed was the go to for breeders, except the fact that they were/ are cheap dogs (breeders just want quick cash per puppy). Notice breeds that cost 1k+ with papers aren't everywhere like pits.
I suspect it's much higher than 20%

R64 my partners family has a (supposed) mix. I think she's mixed with American bulldog. Anyway; she's absolutely great with everyone and other animals. My dachshund can be sketchier than she is. Not going to lie though... Wouldn't want to surprise her as a stranger, but that goes for any big dog.

Knew a girl who had a chunk ripped out of her like this, but it was the calf, not her face. Someone threw something by her, the dog lunged, got her flesh instead. Jaw locked, couldn't release. Left a nasty void of flesh and scaring.
